He loved working-class women,
and he just must have observed

and decided to write about them.

I remember hearing that
he used to sit under his mum's table

making notes,
listening to them gossip.

I'm the caretaker
at the Glad Tidings Hall.

Oh, that's
just across the street, in't it?

What's your place of worship?

I don't really do much about it.
Oh, I know.

He caught the rhythms of speech
of those women.

When we first meet Ena Sharples
in the corner shop,

she talks very, very quickly, she
talks with a certain kind of rhythm.

Within a week, they were received,
christened and confirmed,

and within a fortnight,

she was up all night
sewing surplices.

And changes subject on a...
on a flick.

I'll take a packet of baking powder.

He would always give her
a different view.

He had a sort of lateral way
of thinking

and in any situation
you put forward,

he would give you
a fresh approach to it.

He had a very interesting mind.

'At just 24,
Tony created a cast of characters

'inspired by the people
that he'd grown up with,

'his first vision of them clear
in his original scripts.'

And they are so amazingly
well-drawn.

Watching these old classic scenes,

it's like a little bit
of a Corrie history lesson,

which is nice to see.

The landscape in British television
in 1960 was quite bare.

The stories
that were being told.

POSH ACCENT: Everything came
from Alexandra Palace,

and there was a sort of
decorum when one spoke.

The shows were there to really
educate rather than entertain.

For a lot of Northern,
working-class people,

it was the first time that
they'd ever felt properly seen

and represented.

For people to go,
"'Ey up, cock"...

HE GUFFAWS

..must've shook the earth,
back in the day.

'It seemed one type of voice
dominated the cobbles.'

By gum, they make nowt
to fit these days.

Coronation Street is synonymous
with strong, fiery, hard-working,

gritty Northern women.

The matriarchs of the street,
and there's been so many,

and they just keep coming.

Ah, good morning, Mrs Tanner.

I think women are...
bloody brilliant!

'The legacy of strong female

and it does that brilliant
Manchester, Northern sense of humour

where, you know, even in tragedy,
there's comedy.

One of the most amazing things
about Coronation Street

is that it does get the balance
of that really right.

I came in first in Coronation Street
when I was 15, as a paper lad,

playing Neil Grimshaw.

Yeah?

I had to swear at Mavis, I think...

..which was - ooh! -
really, really naughty then.

'And as for his on-screen
daughter, hasn't she grown?'

I joined the cast,

And me at 16 years old,
with this awesome fringe

that I wish I had now, by the way...

Walking into that green room
to see all them legends was amazing.

When I got the job, I... you know,
called me mum,

and she says,
"Oh, what are you doing?"

I said, "Well, I'm going to be doing
Coronation Street."

And, er... there was a silence
on the other end of the phone,

then I could hear her,
she starts crying.

Still the rebel
trying to overturn society, then?

I thought you'd be at home
in your carpet slippers. Peter!

Hiya, Dad.
Ha-ha!

If you're a working-class kid and
you get a job in Coronation Street,

it's the highest achievement
you can have.

Look where you're going, halfwit!

Well, I didn't tell my parents
that I was going for the role.

I didn't tell them that I was going
for the final audition,

I thought, I don't want to tell them
that I didn't get the job.

That latte cost me two quid!

Could you just do me a favour
and call the burns unit?!

It had milk in it, you wuss!

I picked my dad up from work,

and I put the scripts
in the back seat.

He got in the car and I said, "Dad,
will you pass me those scripts?"

One of us wasn't looking
where we're going!

I tell you what, a simple "Sorry"
would go a long way.

And I remember him looking down,

looking at me,
and then he started crying.

It was one of those moments
that will stay with me forever.

its first trip abroad.'

We got word that the ladies
were going to work in Majorca

for a week,

and the men in the cast,
the silly beggars,

they wouldn't speak to us.

I'm saying that's not fair.

So off we went to Majorca,

and everyone thought,
oh, they're having a fabulous time,

and it was dreadful.

It wasn't like Majorca is now.

Where we landed, not a big airport,

and we waited in the glass building,
and waited.

Somebody came and said
we can't get on the coach

to go to the hotel because
somebody's not paid a bill.

'The novelty of filming on location
in the sun quickly lost its shine.'

We got to the hotel,
they would do nothing,

they wouldn't even give us
a wake-up call.

You what?!

We got ourselves up
and we made coffee in the morning

and that started it.

Well, it'll be a giggle, love,
even if it is a bit grotty.

Right until that coach came

to take us back for that
teatime plane, we were working.

and I was getting very frustrated,
very unhappy.

because the great tragedy is

I happen to think
that I'm a great guy!

It really hurt me.

I regard myself as Ken's caretaker

and he's part of me.

So when this scene came along,
with Mike coming in and all that,

I was really very upset.

I want this thing out in the open,
once and for all.

Now, tell me, just when did this
nasty little affair get underway?

If I had to choose between scenes,

that I would take
to a desert island,

I'll take that row
between Ken and Deirdre.

So we had this final
culminating scene

are having an argument about this,

and there's a knock at the door.

Wow.

Sort of leaves you afterwards
kind of gasping for breath.

Even that silence,
you're just drawn in.

This is where Anne was brilliant,
she was actually, genuinely crying,

and that scene,
we got an award for that scene.

I think this was just the first time

it was kind of all played out
in front of you,

and also done in such a way

that you weren't
taking a moral stance about it.

You really felt for Ken, you know,
you felt for Deirdre,

torn between the two men, and in
a way, you felt for Mike as well.

She's got a home and a family,
and that is where she's staying.

It was that home and that family
she was so anxious to get away from.

That's why she came to me
in the first place.

That was the difference,

it was an affair where
you cared about all three people.

I've had enough of your poison
in my family.

More than enough.

Look...
ONLOOKERS GASP

I really loved her.
I mean, I really did love her

in a true and good sense.

She was a beautiful person,

a beautiful character
and a brilliant actress.

'The Ken, Deirdre and Mike
love triangle

'had truly captured the imagination
of viewers

'and, it seemed,
for the first time, the press too.'

There was no big deal about soaps,
but after that,

we were on, literally,
the photograph from the screen

was on the front page
of all the papers.

# Guilty as a girl can be... #

'Deirdre would famously make
more headlines 15 years later.'

I didn't do any of it!

'A classic soap injustice,
Deirdre had been the victim

'to the fraudulent behaviour
of her partner,

'career criminal John Lindsay.

Even the Prime Minister

I was sat at my desk,

we were in the middle
of the Free Deirdre campaign,

which was huge,
and I picked up my phone

and this gentleman said that he was
calling from 10 Downing Street

so I was absolutely gobsmacked,
to use a Corrie word,

because, erm...

to know that the Prime Minister
wanted to know about a storyline,

so it was really nice.

I briefed them and we laughed
about it, cos, obviously,

it was probably a very strange
conversation for him as well.

# Freedom... #

'The huge success of the show

'has meant its stars
are instantly recognisable.'

I've walked into a petrol station
in a full black tower helmet

and been recognised.

As soon as I said,
"Pump number four, please",

the guy went, "No!"
I was like, "How?!"

'And where there's public interest,
naturally, the press will follow.'

How our lives changed,
literally overnight,

was a huge shock.

Oh, hell!

The papers would go round
to neighbours

that you used to grow up round,

offering them money
for any background stories,

they'd be following you everywhere,

turns out
they were tapping our phones,

I mean, I had to run across
me mum's back garden

into another guy's back garden.

I'd have to hide
in the back of his car,

that's how I got around
without being followed.

What Simon fails to mention
there is,

that all that
was probably down to Simon.

The press intrusion was, y'know...
SIMON LAUGHS

He wasn't the best behaved.

So basically,

Simon spoiled it for
everybody else that came after him.

Surprise, surprise.

I think everyone's told
by other cast members,

"Have you had the talk yet?"

So we tend to try and let them
settle for about a month.

We don't want to freak them out
straight away,

because it can be quite scary.

I do remember sitting down
with the Battersbys

when they first started and they
sat there and they sort of nodded

and Jane said, "I wasn't listening
to a thing you were saying."

That's your middle name... #

So often, people will come back
later and say,

you know you did that talk,

I didn't think any of that
was going to happen to me.

But it did.

'From cast having to be
on their best behaviour

'to characters who get to be
very, very naughty.'

Baddies work so, so well
in Coronation Street

because you've grown up and you love
the other characters, the victims.

He was a serial killer and he did
kill a lot of people. He did, but...

But he didn't mean to, really!

He couldn't get on the Tube, people
were chasing him with umbrellas...

it was just wonderful, really.

Barbara did all her own stunts,

she actually did wear that jacket

It was because they cast it so well,
and we worked so well together,

so it wasn't
a disastrous relationship.
