As I said, we only use fixed lenses.

When we started, we also had some zoom

lenses.

As we all do at the beginning and

we quickly realized that the fixed focal length

simply provides a much better quality and the

end result is simply a giant difference to

the zoom lens.

Yeah, with a zoom lens, for example, you

don't have the option of working with an

open aperture.

Accordingly, one has completely different possibilities even in

situations with poor light.

Yeah, for example, at the live wedding, we

worked all day with an ISO of 1600

almost of the day and despite the open

aperture.

With zoom lenses, we would not have had

the chance to capture the mood so well.

In general, we are always friends of taking

pictures without flash.

Also in the evenings, but you will learn

more about this at the live wedding.

I think we would not want to miss

any of the four fixed focal lengths.

Yes, previously we have discussed which lens we

could do without, but we find that every

lens has its strength and we agreed that

we need all the four different lenses.

Yeah, this was a hard discussion.

This is simply because you often capture the

light and the location in their very own

way with the right lens.

We would like to make optimal use of

the different strengths that the lenses have in

different light situations or actions with a lot

of movement and so on.

Yeah, we will use some examples to explain

this in more detail to you and we

will start with a 24 millimeter lens.

Yeah, this lens is used exclusively by Chris,

so I cannot say much about it.

Yeah, we bought the lens relatively early and

for the first two years it was actually

just left in the bag.

We first had to find out how we

could best use it.

What do we use this lens for?

We use this lens mostly for couple photos,

sometimes also in the report, but that is

relatively rarely.

We practically don't use the lens in rooms

at all.

For example, I would never use it during

getting ready because I don't like how it

distorts lines.

Yeah, it is great for a portrait shot

because it allows you to create a very

dynamic picture.

Yeah, you just have the feeling of being

right in the middle of things and you

still catch so much of the surroundings.

Yeah, we use it for full body shots

as you can see here in this photo.

In addition, we like to use it with

seated photos.

We very often place a couple in the

center and do not cut anything so as

not to distort the persons.

With a 24 millimeter lens we would anyway

recommend not to cut any heads and always

place the couple in the center.

Here it is just very cool that you

don't cut anything and if the edges get

distorted a bit the picture becomes even more

dynamic.

Yeah, so we especially like it if you

get very close with a 24 millimeter and

in this picture we have again made sure

that the couple is in the center and

we don't cut anything.

Yeah, because we are so close to it

you just have the feeling that you're in

the water with them and yeah with another

lens you would not have captured much of

the water on your picture from that distance.

Here we have again a full body photo.

Also here nothing is cut and here's a

slightly different approach upper body landscape format.

Very nice look.

Here again a real close-up but you

can see again that we did not cut

anything.

Yeah, and again the scenery is captured in

a very beautiful way but still the focus

is on the couple.

Yeah, we also make sure that the background

is very clean when we use the 24

millimeter lens and here for example we use

the 24 millimeter lens to get some more

dynamic into the picture.

Here again a seated photo again full body

for us a typical 24 millimeter photo we

best like to use it for that.

Of course we continue to try something new

but these are just the things where we

know that's where it's well suited.

Now we come to the next lens that's

the 35 millimeter lens.

For us that's actually the lens that we

could use the whole day at a wedding.

It is actually suitable for any situation and

you can take photos very close to the

person but also full body.

You can shoot upright as well as landscape

and also you can cut heads.

If we had to opt for a single

lens then it would be the 35 millimeter

lens.

We both have a 35 millimeter lens each

and here's a nice example of a close

-up photo during a portrait shoot and in

the close-up the background is very soft.

Here we also cut the hair and yeah

it's perfect.

The next photo is now a full body

photo quite far away but still with a

very nice sharpness.

Also it is photographed with a 1.4

aperture and that's what we love about this

lens.

We also love to take pictures in portrait

format with it.

We especially like these half-cut ones as

in the photo on the right.

In addition I especially like that during couple

shooting you have a certain closeness to the

couple because I'm still mostly very close to

the couple.

Now we have here again a full body

photo with a great backdrop and immediately afterwards

a super close one with a very soft

background.

The variety offered by the lens fascinates us

again and again.

Also for pictures with a lot of movement

we like to use this lens very much.

This gives us a good scope to capture

the movement.

Here again a comparison photo of the same

situation photographed with exactly the same settings.

Once a whole body and once a close

-up.

In rooms such as during the getting ready

it is perfectly suited.

As I said you could actually use it

in any situation.

Again a picture of the woman's getting ready.

On the left a detail photo.

We do that exclusively with a 35 millimeter

and also on the right a very nice

picture of the getting ready.

I like to use 35 millimeter and 85

millimeter during the getting ready depending on the

room size.

For smaller rooms I sometimes use 35 millimeter

and 50 millimeter.

Here's another example with a comparison close up

and far away.

Two completely different looks with the same lens.

This is a typical 35 millimeter picture for

me.

This over the shoulder thing probably does not

work so well with any other lens and

we love it for such situations.

It's just perfect to tell the story and

also here during the way out of the

church.

I use it again and again.

In this case when taking the photo upright

you just have the great opportunity to also

capture the confetti and at that moment you

can capture the whole atmosphere with a 35

millimeter lens.

Also in the evening we use it very

much and even if the space is very

tight you can work with it very easily.

I think you also love the 85.

And especially at the party both of us

shoot actually only 35 millimeter lens.

We use a very hard flash to capture

the mood very well.

Now we come to the 50 millimeter lens.

We use both Canon and Sigma and find

both lenses equally good.

So I think I could have saved just

under 500 euro.

If you're considering buying a 50 millimeter lens

the quality of Sigma will definitely be enough.

For us the 50 millimeter lens is something

like the little sister of the 85 millimeter

lens.

Nevertheless of course it has its own merits.

In this case for example we first wanted

to take the picture with the 85 millimeter.

We thought that this would make the background

bigger.

And when we tried it out the mountain

was much too blurred.

So you did not even recognize the background

any longer.

Yeah we shot it then with a 50

millimeter lens.

As you can see the background is very

recognizable and in this case it is the

ideal solution.

The mountains are still very visible.

With a 35 millimeter lens for example you

could not see much of the mountains anymore.

For us the 50 millimeter lens is also

an around lens.

We also like to use it during the

getting ready at weddings.

Also for single portraits it is very nice.

Here again a nice example of a full

body photo with landscapes.

The 50 millimeter lens pulls the background in

a bit and makes the dune look bigger.

So with this lens you have no rear

blinds and it's pretty much exactly how you

see something with the eye.

At this table setting picture you can also

see how everything is captured very nicely.

For example with a 35 millimeter the deco

would probably have been less effective than it

is.

Even for group pictures the 50 millimeter lens

is actually our favorite lens.

Often you do not have the most beautiful

location available for group photos and then it's

nice if you work with a 50 millimeter

lens and the people thus are cropped a

bit more.

Yeah the whole picture looks a bit softer

and also the bouquet is more beautiful.

That's why we like to use this lens

in group photos.

So here's another example of a group photo.

Here too the 50 millimeter lens makes the

tree in the background a bit soft.

And here's an example of a nice indoor

photo.

Yeah again you can see how beautifully soft

the background becomes with a 50 millimeter lens.

The lines in the room are nicely displayed

and not distorted.

Yeah the ideal solution for this situation.

We also use it very often at weddings

in the evening, during dinner and during the

speeches.

Even more than the 35 millimeter lens.

In this case for example we didn't want

to get too close to not disturb the

guests and the the bridal couple.

So here it's just perfect to capture the

mood and the light.

Now we come to the 85 millimeter lens.

We like specifically about this lens that the

persons are so cropped.

Yeah that's that way the background is shown

very softly besides it has this beautiful observer

look.

In this case it was a landscape format.

Actually we like to use the lens very

much for full body pictures in portrait format.

Yeah you can see that in the next

example.

These pictures are typical 85 millimeter photos for

us.

Yeah you would not get this special look

with any other lens.

When we look at these photos one always

has the feeling that time stands still.

Yeah the look is just so dreamy.

Sure the 35 millimeter is definitely more modern

but for the right moment the 85 millimeter

is unbeatable.

Here's a nice example again full body.

The next one shows you the kiss at

the wedding.

I always photograph with the 85 millimeter lens

from the aisle.

Yeah also during the getting ready we like

to use this lens.

Of course this always depends on the size

of the room as well but it is

well suited for portraits as in this example.

You can also use it to hide the

room a bit if it's not very nice.

Chris also likes to use this lens in

the evening as in this example.

Yeah it's a great way to capture the

emotions.

Yeah I actually only use the 85 millimeter

lens during the getting ready and sometimes for

the wedding ceremony and during the portrait session

Chris takes all 85 millimeter photos.

Here we have a comparison between the 35

and the 85 where you can see the

strength of the 85 very well.

You often hear that photographers work exclusively with

wide angle lenses so here are a few

examples why we would by no means want

to forgo this lens.

Yeah this example is exactly the same variation

that we photographed in parallel so you can

see very clearly that the background in the

last picture is very restless especially with busy

backgrounds you still get a very nice cropping

with the 85 millimeter lens.

And the soft background.

Yeah.

Thus the focus is much more on the

couple and you will not be distracted as

a viewer.

So yeah in this situation the 85 millimeter

lens wins.

Also in our next example you can see

a comparison again.

Again the pictures were taken in exactly the

same situation.

On the left side a 35 millimeter and

on the right side a 85 millimeter photo.

Yeah you can clearly see that the left

picture does not capture the location as softly

and dreamily as the right picture.

Yeah in the right photo the light is

captured much more nicely.

In addition the background is softer and the

bokeh is more beautiful.

Yeah due to the fact that at this

location the background was again extremely busy the

85 millimeter lens is a much better solution

here.

Here's another example 35 versus 85 in which

we do not find that 35 millimeter photo

nearly as beautiful as the 85 millimeter photo.

In the right picture the focus is just

so strongly on the couple that it takes

in the viewer much more.

The right picture conveys thereby much more feeling.

Yeah.

In the left photo the background distracts us

much more because the stones are so restless.

Yeah.

Also in the right picture the light is

captured much more softly and creates this dreamy

look.

Yeah in this situation you could have gotten

even closer with the 35 millimeter lens.

Then one would have been able to capture

the whole scenery even more beautifully because then

the background would have become softer.

Yeah.

And here's our last example.

Here we actually find both pictures equally good.

Yeah the 35 millimeter on the left captures

the location very nicely.

It is very nice how richly the colors

are displayed and also the sea is crisp

and sharp.

Yeah in the right photo the background is

much softer again and as a result the

focus is again more on the couple.

But we find both pictures equally strong here.

You saw that all the examples were portrait

photos.

Surely the 35 millimeter lens is a lot

stronger than the 85 millimeter lens in the

report area to tell the story.

But especially with the portraits you should not

underestimate the 85 millimeter lens.

Yeah we think some photographers should use this

lens more often for portraits.
