Now, once you put your Bush Ranger hat on, you've just robbed a gold escort.

Of armfuls of gold worth millions of dollars today.

Where would you put it?

During the gold rush, outlaws known as Bush Rangers, including the infamous Ned Kelly gang,

terrorised the outback, robbing banks and ambushing stagecoaches full of gold

destined for the Melbourne Mint.

In 1852, Scottish-born Francis McCollum, known by his pirate-inspired Bush Ranger name Captain Melville,

stole an estimated $10 million worth of gold from a stagecoach leaving the Bendigo gold fields.

Melville and his gang were caught, but the gold was nowhere to be found.

Legend has it that when Melville died in prison,

he took the secret location of the millions in gold with him to the grave.

Think of all the places that we'll be able to get to on the river

where no roads or cars, no-one's been able to access it.

That is a pretty good plan.

Well, we've just got to be croc-wise, be croc-safe

and just assume that there's salties here.

This river is home to two species of crocodiles,

the freshwater croc and the highly aggressive salty.

This ambush predator can submerge undetected for hours

before killing its victim with a strike four times faster

than a rattlesnake.

Probably going to take us about two hours on these kayaks

to get to where we need to go.

Two hours in, two hours back, detecting all day.

But if we hit gold out there,

this could be exactly what we need to hit that target this season.

Five years ago, working in the beauty salon,

I never, ever would have imagined

that I'd be out here on the Palmer River digging for gold, hey.

It's turned out to be more than just prospecting, you know.

It's like every day is an adventure now, mate.

There's no gold up here, but

it could be

Bush Ranger gold up here.

Well, this is buried just a little bit.

This is actually

an old horse bite. That's

pretty cool. The reason why I'm excited

about this is because

back in the day in the 1850s,

only the, you know, the really affluent people,

the wealthy, you know,

miners that done really well had horses

and Bush Rangers.

They'd steal them off the wealthy.

That's like their getaway car.

That's pretty bloody exciting.

This is

starting to look promising.

It's not quite the start

of the season I thought we'd be having.

It kind of blows me mind to think the Caddo's

is just over that mountain range, just over there,

literally, you know, less than a couple

of k's away. That's where I'd rather

be. But I think that right

now Brent really needs this to hold deal

with the passing of Neville. There's a bigger

picture here at play. If this is what he needs,

Just so limited in where I can detect.

I've got grass that side of me,

water that side of me.

I'm stuck in this one little strip along the edge

of the creek.

It's still super hot, really humid.

It's sort of a sack of me,

a bit of confidence that we're going to do well

in this area.

It's rubbish.

After the wet season,

there's always long, thick grass around.

You swing your detector

and it just gets all tangled up and stuff.

Like, it's pretty difficult.

So I'm just trying

to search around these bad

rock bars, sort of on the edge

of the creek a bit. Can't afford

to miss a single one when we've got a target

at 65 ounces

this year.

And we're just getting started.

This is a good looking area

in here. All this bedrock

everywhere. It's a great spot

for the gold to catch. The gold

will come tumbling down in the floods and it'll

get stuck in these bedrock

cracks or behind these big rocks.

And because of the bedrock, it can't sink

any deeper.

There we go. First target of the year.

Alright, it's out.

Sounds nice. Hopefully

it's gold because it'll be nice solids if it is.

Gold's definitely settling in these

bedrock cracks and that's just brilliant.

begun.

I've gone pretty well. I put a few

away. Nothing crazy.

We actually make a really good team together.

You know, what we're doing up here

is for the family.

So it's nice to

be able to work together

and achieve something.

Put one of the bags

into the little ball mill here.

It's just full of steel balls

up to about a quarter of the way. I've just crushed

it all down until hopefully a fine paste.

The mill

uses water and heavy steel

balls to pulverise the mine

waste. The gold

is then removed from the slurry

during the refinement process.

Yeah, that's super fine.

A couple of hours in there and it's

all crushed up beautifully.

Once I've got enough in this tub,

I'll take it over where the girls are.

They'll get the concentrators going.

OK, water. Yep.

Pumps.

Yep.

And we'll just start feeding it slowly into the concentrators.

Basically, we want to use some

centrifugal force to separate all the

waste products and retain the gold

and all the heavies and hopefully recover enough

gold to pay for what I've already spent.

So keen to see some gold.

I can see a lot of gold in it, but I can see

more particles of steel.

It's trying to separate the two, the steel

from the gold. It is a

mission, so I'm just going to try and get as much as I can

with a magnet.

not the start we thought we were going to

get, though. We lost the road

in the wet season, but

hey, these came up

good. It worked out to be a brilliant

plan. It did. It just all fell into place.

Yeah. There's a lot of ground that we

couldn't even touch because the grass was so long

and the water's still really high,

but at least we've discovered

some good gold ground now. Absolutely.

Well, we got a 65

ounce target, so we're

punctured for a kilo of gold each.

We've got to make it work and like

you know, the Palmer's going to throw everything

it can at us to try and stop that

from happening. What do you reckon we got?
