to you how I took a photo that

I took last Saturday at the wedding, specifically

in the preparations, and it is a photo

that will help me explain how we work

or how we combine artificial light with natural

light.

In this case, how we combine very strong

natural light and how we compensate it with

artificial light, in this case of flash, and

you will see how to get a creative

result.

The first of all I want to do

is simply show you this image, which is

the one that I am going to explain

to you today.

I'm going to give you a couple of

seconds, I mean, I want to keep it

so that you can analyze it in detail

and this will help me first to explain

a little or to analyze this photograph a

little in detail and later I will tell

you how I did it, although it does

not hold great secrets, but it is important

to explain a little how I did it

so that no one has doubts about it.

Speaking of the analysis of how I took

this image, no, sorry, speaking of the analysis

or speaking a little of the background of

the image, which I am already starting to

mess up, first of all, and it is

possible that more than some of you have

seen that there are quite a few points

of information distributed by the rest of the

image, since I think that this image picks

up some of the points that we have

been talking about on Patreon in recent months.

First of all, it should be said how

the image is perfectly balanced, how we have

a girl on the left, who in this

case was the bride, and how we have

the body of a second girl on the

right, in which we only see some hands,

with which the first point that we would

have to stop is how it is balanced.

You already know that in my photographs I

always try that I can, in which there

is information both on the left and on

the right, but there is also another important

point and that I told you a few

videos ago on Patreon, which was something like

working or analyzing the ends of the image.

If you look at the upper right end,

we can see how the face of the

girl appears in which she is doing the

lipstick test to see if it is the

tone that she wants.

As you can see, there is already a

upper right end, lower right end and another

left end.

It is something that I have already talked

about, but I have to emphasize that because

I think it is important, how I like

to redirect the viewer to each of the

extremes.

I have already told you many times that

I like the viewer, or you, or whoever

sees my images, to stop for a second

and say, ah, okay, well, I see the

face of the girl below, above, I also

see that some hands appear just below and

I have another girl.

I mean, it's like taking a little boy

by the hand and directing him to the

places that I want to direct him to,

until he finally stays with the atmosphere that

existed there.

And speaking a little more about the analysis

of the same photograph, what I should say

is that I could have taken the whole

body of the girl on the right, I

could have taken it out simply by taking

a step back and including it in the

same frame.

But also, again, remember that in my images

I like that there is a connotation, that

there is an obvious point.

For what?

So that you, the spectators, can imagine what

is inside her.

But I always say the same thing, why

take out the whole body?

If with the hand with the lipstick we

already understand that there is a female figure

behind, I also include the silhouette of her

face, so why include more information?

Remember that less is more, so that was

a point that I wanted to highlight.

I could have edited this photo both in

black and white and in color, but why

did I do it in color?

For the simple reason that I already knew

that when I included those windows that were

oriented towards the sky, the sky is blue,

or those windows have a cold color temperature,

therefore I already knew that the skins or

human bodies that lived in the photo or

that are inside it were going to have

a warm temperature.

That is, the skin, in this case of

the girls, exerts a perfect contrast with the

blue sky, with which that was going to

work perfectly for me, that story.

In addition, a point that I also like,

how did I find this photo?

How did it arrive?

I mean, how did I say, damn, photo,

boom!

Why?

Because I always go in search of a

body language.

You already know that in body language there

are hands, eyes, lips and other little things,

but in this case, the moment I found

the girl on the right, who is the

sister of the bride, who was using lipstick,

I said, damn, hands.

Of course, when in your project as a

photographer you are looking for that, you are

looking for body language, you finally find it,

because you are looking for hands, in the

end they come to you, right?

That was the point where I stopped, I

said, damn it, okay?

So this was the analysis or the description

that I wanted to give you first of

all, of what this image was as such,

but I would like to explain a little

how it was done, although it is true

that it is very simple, okay?

First of all, I would like you to

watch a little bit, I mean, this little

video in which, as you can see, I

was right on the right of the image

and you can see where they were, for

example, distributed, right?

As you have seen, the bride was completely

in darkness, I mean, she was completely without

light.

Of course, the hands of the sister, the

hands of the girl who is painting, are

illuminated with natural light.

The natural light was very, very, very hard,

we are talking about getting ready in the

morning, with which all the light of the

morning was falling to death, to death, with

which I had to do, if I wanted

to have the bride illuminated, hit her to

death.

Why don't I use LED?

For the simple reason that the LED does

not have as much light power as the

flash could be.

What does this mean?

That I have to, with the flash, I

have to increase or I have to have

more power than natural light, I have to

beat the sun.

Do you understand what I'm talking about?

No, okay?

So the first thing I did was set

the flash to maximum power.

Regardless of whether you use the Profoto or

whatever, I can assure you that for a

hand flash, competing against natural light, that is,

very strong natural light, we have to compensate

or we have to give a flash power,

most of the time, to maximum power.

How did I place it?

How do I place the flash?

45 degrees of the bride, with a gorilla

pod on top of the table, hidden behind

the bouquets of flowers, as you can see,

the table is full of things, that is,

of dirt, but it helped me hide the

flash perfectly.

Important point, I put a grid to redirect

the flash light, that is, only directly for

the bride.

Why only for the bride?

Because I did not want to place, that

is, if I had not placed, sorry, if

I had not placed the grid, what the

flash would have done, it would have opened

the beam of light a lot, illuminating areas

that I did not want to be illuminated.

I just wanted to illuminate the bride, who,

as you are seeing, is on the left,

so that was the reason, right?

Important things, right?

When it comes to shooting, that is, as

I told you at the beginning of the

video, I wanted to balance, I wanted to

create a balance, so I already knew that

the bride was on the left, that they

were putting makeup on her, but the bride's

sister is on the right.

I was clearly worried that those hands would

occupy the right position, but I was more

worried, and there I worked hard, in which

the silhouette of the face of the bride's

sister, that is, the silhouette or the face

that is on the upper right side, I

was worried that it was perfectly fitted, okay?

I already knew that, as I was in

that place, I was going to be in

silhouette.

If you understand me, why was I in

silhouette?

Because I was exposing the hands of the

girl who was painting her hand with the

lipstick.

I mean, what I do is expose the

hand of the girl, which is the highest

point of light, and that should not be

burned, and once I expose that hand, I

expose, I check the light of that hand,

what I do is sub-expose two steps

of the diaphragm, always, and later compensate with

the flash, which, as I have told you,

was at 45 degrees, at maximum power, with

a grid, to redirect the beam of light

only for the bride, period.

And that's where it all ends.

As you can see, for some it may

seem a little complex, but believe me, once

you get the rhythm, the flash, this is

something almost mechanical, okay?

And well, I am not a specialist in

flash like others, but I know how to

solve perfectly how to get a scene like

this.

Of course, if I hadn't had the flash,

if I hadn't, sorry, if I hadn't known

how to use the flash, my head wouldn't

have thought about that creative possibility.

What do I mean by all this?

That knowing how to use the flash is

going to give us 40% more creativity,

I mean, it's going to give us more

field or more knowledge to know how to

play a game in situations in which the

light does not accompany or in situations and

you say, damn, a light comes in to

death there, such and such, I can put

a fucking great flash there, the bride is

illuminated and I create an image that, as

I have already told you, is not a

photon, but it is an image that, well,

can work and that helps me to move

forward and this can do or help me

get out, not of a creative block that

I did not have, but it helps me

to get an image that, if I had

not had flash, as I have told you,

it would have been impossible to photograph it

or simply reach it.
