this is the Autumn of 1949 in a little

over three months these men and their

accomplices 11 in all were to execute

the crime of the century the robbery at

Brinks this man would become the key

figure in finally breaking what was for

some time considered to be the perfect

crime

plans for the robbery had already been

underway for nearly three years

members of the gang met informally a few

at a time to discuss their progress

among the 11 Boston hoodlums who

comprise the gang were two close friends

James McNally burglar sometime liquor

store clerk with convictions for theft

and gun carrying violations and his

closest friend Daniel Conforti who had

come to Boston from the family farm

outside nearby Stoughton to become

McNally's partner in a precarious Life

Of Crime also included in the gang was

Ted Flynn a Local Tavern owner with a

record for robbery and receiving stolen

Ernest Heidemann Gambler numbers Runner

Jerry Carter self-employed vending

machine operator with a conviction

record for breaking and entering larceny

Les Hayes a part-time longshoreman with

a long record for gambling larceny

Julius Moreno cousin of gang leader

Mario Russo who occasionally worked as a

car salesman but more often as a lottery

ticket operator

and the self-appointed leader of the

gang Mario Russo an alien and part owner

of a garage and gas station with a long

list of arrests in connection with the

lottery records by late 1949 some

members had begun to complain openly to

Russo that they were taking too much

time time what are you talking about

grabbed it when Brinks was over on

Federal Street

January 17 1950 the group of armed

masked men successfully escaped from the

French Street facility of Brinks

Incorporated in Boston with robbery loot

totaling more than two and

three-quarters million dollars minutes

later Boston police arrived at the scene

since the robbers took cash checks and

other Securities of the Federal Reserve

Bank and the Veterans Administration

district office the FBI also quickly

joined in the investigation by the time

police had arrived however the Brinks

gang was already arriving at one of the

gang members homes oriently executing

the final step in what came to be known

as the crime of the century The Perfect

Crime The Fabulous Brinks robbery

assigned to the investigation from the

time they entered the door at 165 Prince

Street it would be almost exactly six

years before they would finally close

that door again on the Brinks case

alerted to contact underworld sources

for any information concerning the

Brinks robbery while this Nationwide

project was launched Special Agents of

the FBI along with Boston police began

questioning known Boston Street hoodlums

who authorities believe might have

knowledge of the robbery of all I know I

heard on the radio

Rush Shannon we're not asking for an

early efforts of the FBI to identify the

members of the Brinks gang produced the

names of many suspects but no evidence

chauffeur's cap which had been forwarded

to the FBI laboratory in Washington

yielded no significant clues of the

hundreds of New England hoodlums

contacted by the FBI none was willing to

talk to agents regarding the Brinks

crime 43 Brinks delivery sheets and

other items with latent prints had been

sent to the identification division in

Washington the division developed 50

finger Impressions 46 matched those of

Brink's employees not one matched the

prince of the Prime suspects the belief

that the robbery was assisted by someone

inside Brinks had begun to fade both the

keys were obtained from someone inside

Brinks we haven't been able to establish

it we've questioned every employee past

and present checked and rechecked

and unless something breaks there I

think we have to assume that the whole

hypothesis of an inside job is just

about evaporated

well that hundred thousand dollar reward

that brings people are offering should

bring some bugs out of the woodwork well

they're already flying in tips from

everyone from Housewives to mediums

lead

doing it the hard way by the process of

elimination

starting right now we compile a master

list of every suspect who could have

pulled the robbery that's going to be a

long list Paul hundreds maybe even a

couple of thousand

that's right I want that list even if it

gets as fat as a phone book

convicted for violation of the Uniform

Firearms Act and sentenced to three

years in jail though acquitted on

similar charges Daniel Conforti was

removed to McKean County Pennsylvania

for trial on burglary counts and was

sentenced to from 5 to 20 years still

certain that McNally and Conforti were

Prime subjects in the Brinks case

special agents Houston and Nash thinking

that imprisonment may have shaken the

two men continue to press them for

information

really getting a little careless in your

old age McNally oh I wouldn't count on

that Houston time's wasting your friends

the remaining members of the Brinks gang

the FBI felt certain they knew the

principal members of the Brinks gang

still no physical evidence or Witnesses

had been found to substantiate this

identification in court painstaking

investigation of every small detail had

produced few positive results I just

country not a diet but Paul is spending

their money on lawyers we know that sure

prove it every Bureau division in the

country police and places I never heard

of all looking finding nothing look

McNally's demands for money or causing

any doubts that the Brinks gang had that

the FBI was on the right track began to

fade however when a Federal grand jury

began hearings in Boston on November

25th 1952 10 of the 11 members of the

Brinks gang appeared before the grand

jury in sessions that lasted until early

January of 1953 One By One The Ten Men

either denied any implication in the

Brinks robbery or invoked the Fifth

Amendment refusing to answer questions

as the hearings concluded it had been

almost exactly three years since the

start of one of the most intensive FBI

investigations in history

low indictment

the participants were effectively

disguised no eyewitnesses Witnesses

refused to give testimony

a gang of Hometown hoods holding up all

the resources of the bureau I can hardly

believe it well don't start thinking

his life when he was next seen on August

1st 1954 at Leicester he was immediately

arrested and sentenced to jail for

probation violation on a gun carrying

charge as a protective measure in view

of the reported attempts on his life

McNally was confined in Hampton County

Jail at Springfield Massachusetts rather

than in Boston

at 4 20 pm on January 6 1956 the long

and Relentless investigation by police

and the FBI produced its first tangible

results a defeated and completely

disillusioned James McNally began a full

confession of every detail of the Brinks

robbery armed with Federal warrants FBI

agents began the arrest of the accused

members of the Brinks gang whose names

had topped their list of suspects for

almost six years of the original 11 gang

members Daniel Conforti and Dennis

Fisher had both died of natural causes

and James McNally had already confessed

to the crime the eight remaining gang

members were taken into custody while

the suspect's awaited trial in Boston an

unexpected chain of events led to the

recovery of the only money ever traced

to the Brinks robbery

arrest of a small-time Boston hoodlum in

Baltimore Maryland LED eventually to the

office of a Boston character known as

fat John where authorities found more

than 51 900 which was identified as part

of the Brinks loot though fat John never

talked he was sentenced to two years on

state charges later out on Appeal on

other charges he was found shot to death

on June 19 1958 trial of the eight

remaining members of the Brinks gang

began in Suffolk County Courthouse in

Boston on August 6

1956. in addition to the detailed

testimony of James McNally who became

the chief prosecution witness the

testimony of more than 100 other

Witnesses filled more than 5 300 pages

on October 6th a jury found the eight

defendants guilty all received sentences

of life in prison

James McNally later pled guilty to two

counts of the indictment since his

sentence was equated with the time he

had already been confined he was freed

the Brinks robbery though still known as

the crime of the century was no longer

classified as a perfect crime
