They can find the prey without seeing it

They can fly silently..like ghosts

They are powerful predators at night

..and today

Owls have real superpowers

..To understand

their amazing abilities,

We will be closer than ever

We will meet (Luna and Lily)

Through the eyes of the tender little barn owl chicks -

...and their extraordinary families.

We will delve into magical abilities

..of these mysterious birds

You don't want to be a mushroom,

No, no, life would be short like a mouse

Technology will reveal how they do it?

!there is no sound

This is really impressive , isn't it?

We're about to find out what..that makes "Al Owl" special

What gives these birds of prey

This powerful feature?

Owls live all over the world,

..from the frozen north

To the scorching deserts

With their familiar faces,

These attractive birds have captured our imagination

There are about 240 different species

It seems that they occupied our planet

They live on every continent except Antarctica

So what are the secrets of their success?

Owls are birds of prey.

Like their "hawks and eagles" cousins ,

And "hawks" have sharp claws,

curved beak

...and a taste for small mammals

But they also have unique skills that set them apart -

...their superpowers

To find out more, we need to go

...below the surface

...and starting from the beginning -

He has all the potential this wonderful bird

in one small egg

After 30 days of incubation,

...the chick inside is ready to appear

But it is a difficult task

An owl can take up to 48 hours

...to get out of its protective cover

What are you going to do there?

You're out yet, kiddo , aren't you?

Waiting impatiently in the nursery room

He is an exceptional father... to a bird

I saw you move then - I saw the egg move

!I moved

Lloyd Buck was fascinated by albums

...since he was young

Now, he and his wife (Rose) have a whole family of birds,

Including an owl ..(The barn is called (Kinsa)

Joanna, Brown Owl

This is a good girl!

(Show me), (Bran)

"Moses", "BJ"

and Sasha, the brown eagle

Lloyd and Rose love their birds and take care of them

..like their children

They also train them to star in films

...we have a few grains

...they have a passion

To educate others about birds

The importance of protecting it in the wild

through the eyes

for this special family,

We will learn more

About the mysterious world of owls

Lloyd and Rose will test their birds

They are expecting some new arrivals this year

Two barn owl chicks

..the first of them

ready to hatch

One more big push and you're out

Oh! Here you are

!Welcome

Yes, you did a good job

Little one, yes?

That must be quite an effort isn't it, to get out of there?

Look, it's easy to take that for granted when you're here,

but in fact ,

It's really weird -

To see a new life come into the world,

There is something really special..in it, really special

Consider saying that,

They're not the prettiest albums, are they?

This chick and her younger brother

They came from a pair of captive barn owls

When they grow up, they will give us

A rare and wonderful opportunity

Learn more about these secret birds

We have already thought of a name

Well, it's Luna

We always tend to give our birds names

Because they became part of the family

With love and care (Lloyd,

(Luna) grows fast

And only six days later she met her younger sister

Lloyd and Rose continue with Lily.

!come on then

During these early days and weeks,

Lloyd and Rose need to "give" Luna and Lily

Round the clock monitoring

!Tasty

When they hatch they are completely blind and helpless,

They can't even regulate their body temperature,

They need four meals a day

Oh look!

It's just like kids, really!

But you took responsibility,

So you just have to keep going

There is still a long way to go for the album

Before they turn into a beautiful bum with superpowers

Well, should we write that you pooped today?

yes?

Nature will play its part,

But now they are totally dependent on Lloyd and Rose

...by evening

..everyone is tired

But in the wild this is the time

When most owls wake up

"brown owl"

chasing our nights

But why would you choose to live in this dark and difficult time of the day?

With the help of a special camera looking for heat,

We can enter this hidden nocturnal world

It's spring in the Highlands of Scotland

...at this time of the year

Male owls feel pressure

..this one has

A family of hungry mouths feeding in a nearby nest

Thermal camera ...reveals something else

Many mammals are active at night

So, even though it's dark

It's a perfect time to go fishing

..I passed

The female comes to catch the catch

She is a month old and has a growing appetite

One mouse won't be enough

But fortunately, there are many

Where did that come from?

No other bird of prey can hunt in such darkness

..so, at night

Albums have a sky to themselves

It is one of the keys to their success

But how can they see in the dark?

This is where the album is published

...their first unique power

The owls have distinctively big eyes

The brown owl's eyes are amazing

70% of his skull

For us, it's only 5%

..these big eyes

The owl manages to collect

...as much available light as possible

in the back of the eye

The retina has a particularly high density of rod cells

These cells are very sensitive in low light,

able to solve an extra layer of detail,

Which is sent to the brain via the optic nerve

These special modifications "mean" brown owl

You can see an image 2.5 times brighter

..whom do we see?

This helps them target lurking small mammals

..in a dark bush

..but the brown album

You have another incredible skill

They are territorial birds,

And while they are flying around their homes

They create a mind map

This means that they can find their way in the dark

Avoid invisible obstacles

So the memory of the owl is enormous

.. coupled with their sensitive vision

Which helps them take advantage of the world of the night

...at the age of two weeks,

Luna and Lily open their eyes

But there are a few more days before they can focus on anything

Now, at three..and four weeks old

They begin to understand their surroundings

..of a good night vision

She is probably the most famous superpower of the owl

But Luna was developing another one of her senses,

...even before it hatches

-What's your opinion? -indeed

- Should we check his progress? lets take alook

..on occasions, if you call them

If you turn to them, they'll actually be,

..may call you

!amazing

Remarkably, the album recognizes

On the calls of their parents even from inside the egg

It is a nice! That little "chip"

We'll take him back there

Which suggests that the sound should be

...an important part of their world

...but how important is that?

Do you hear adult owls in the wild?

Among the abandoned buildings .. of an old airport,

This barn owl is looking for its next meal

Cold weather and a blanket of snow

They left her suffering from a lack of food

So, I was forced to hunt

..in a day

...and now, she has a competition

..."falcon"

It's one of the downsides of fishing

during daylight hours

Even worse, it means snow

Can't see its prey

So how do you find your food while it 's hiding out of sight?

Hunger forces the hawk to take risks

But his eyesight is sharp

It is not enough in these circumstances

Fortunately for a barn owl,

She has another weapon in her warehouse

A blind plane won't stop her from eating

Because though she can't see it,

She can hear her prey -

..even under the snow

Al-Asiq simply isn't..he has what it takes

How does the owl's exceptional hearing work?

Some owls have ear tufts,

But these feathers are not used for hearing

..they are more about communicating mood

..In reality ,

The owl head is completely designed

..to listen

Her distinctive round face

shaped like a satellite dish

Specifically for sound detection

...a ring of hard feathers

Directs the sound towards the real ears -

that was hidden in the side of the face

some owl species

One ear opens higher than the other

This unique adaptation allows the owl

..to know the loudness of the sound,

...as well as the direction

The sound reaches the left ear

..before it reaches the right

He tells the owl it 's coming from below

at certain frequencies.

owl heard

Ten times more sensitive than ours

This exceptional ability

It means that this " grey..great owl can locate its prey

Even when it's out of sight

But the owl's hearing is very fine

..become more effective

Through another anatomical gift

They can turn their heads through an incredible 270 degrees

..if we do that

We were cutting off the blood supply

..to our brains and lose consciousness

But owls have developed adaptations, especially in their necks

As their heads turn,

Large areas in the vertebrae of the neck

Make sure not to crush the blood vessels

...and enlarged arteries in the upper neck

...and create a tank

..which provides continuous blood flow

..to the brain

This amazing flexibility allows the owl to focus

Ultra-sensitive vision and hearing

directly on its prey

In just two months

There was an amazing transformation

(Luna Willie)

... grown from helpless little chicks

Near adult barn owl

Now, they're fluffy and pushed out

..by real flight feathers

Which represents the arrival of the greatest teacher

..in their young life

Luna, come weigh in!

Now this is Luna

began to use her wings,

..it's a bit

Less cooperative about her daily weight

I know you're hungry

good girl! Now, stay

..don't go crazy

...steadily and steadily

..good girl! This is it

Hahahaha

Luna, you can fly!

First flight to Luna

It begins with a leap of faith

And now she's flying every chance she gets

She left her younger sister staring in astonishment

Mastering this new skill doesn't happen overnight

She might have another try

But this is something you should have -

Her ability to hunt depends on it

...color

Don't fall into the bucket of water!

Oh!

I told you not to go in the bucket of water

Poor!

You will get very wet

I don't think you'll do it again in a hurry

..(Luna Willie)

Still spending the night at home

Now Luna can fly, and nowhere is off limits

And her enthusiastic flying practice

Get her into trouble

Oh, that's a picture, Luna

But Luna is lucky.

Home is a relatively safe place

To practice this vital skill

In the wild, some owls

You are facing a huge challenge

California redwoods are the giants of the jungle.

The tallest trees in the world

Perched precariously on top of this

It's a family of owls..great gray

..it is a great and safe place to live

But when it comes to learning to fly,

There are some obvious challenges

..to launch yourself

The equivalent of a 30-storey building

It takes some courage

until they get a comment from him,

Album depends on ability

..to get a grip

...that's less flying, more

.."falling with style"

..put him on the ground safely

But they should keep practicing..so, now

It's a long and hard climb back to the top

And it wasn't long before they took off

Although Layla is a week younger than Luna,

Like any younger brother,

She won't leave him behind

Oh, you're a smart, smart, smart girl!

I know you're hungry

Before long, I advanced from throbbing

..to fly

Oh, that's so clever!

...from the power of flight

This is what distinguishes birds

lily)! oh)

Albums have refined their style

...with some amazing modifications

ready?

- Are you ready? - yes

lily)! Come on)

To fully understand how owls are different,

We need to get back to basics

How long does it take for Lily to fly

To find it abroad? ,

(Lloyd and Rose have been recruited..)

With the help of an ornithologist..Professor (Graham Martin)

...and a super fast photographer (Mark Payne Gill).

For the bird to fly in the air

...he must overcome two forces

Gravity, the invisible cloud ... that keeps us on Earth

and drag, which is ...the resistance we're testing

We are moving in the air

Birds use their wings

..to create momentum

But how do they do that?

Bird wings are the shape of an airplane

Air moves over the top of the wing

It must travel faster than the plane under it

This creates a difference in air pressure,

..that generates lift

To gain forward momentum , birds flap their wings

This makes air flow over them

... in a spiral from the back edge

Creating vortices that push the bird forward and up

..these are the basic principles

..from all trips

But what's so unique about the way owls fly?

We fly a few different types of birds, varying in sizes

But the only thing I noticed about the owls

It always seems a lot slower

In their flight more .. than other birds

Well, all birds have different wings shapes

And they can fly at different speeds - it's just like airplanes

So, if you look at the wing size of a barn owl,

It actually has a very large wing,

Thus, they can fly very slowly, and with great control

To truly understand the slow flight of barn owls,

Lloyd's putting Lily to the test.

..against two of his other birds

Maisie), the gray luxury "goose") -

It spreads endurance over long distances

..(and (Moses)

-"The peregrine falcon" -

One of the fastest birds on earth

"Saqr Al-Shaheen" takes the lead

Its long and pointed wings are completely flat,

Designed for speed..and maneuverability

who needs to catch

The goose is next.

Weighing six pounds, its wings are relatively short and narrow

I work hard to carry it by air

Barn owl has the biggest wings.

..in regards to her body

And her exhale is very curved,

...which generates a great deal of lift

Therefore, a barn owl can fly slower and with fewer wing strokes

than most other birds

wow! good girl

But why is this important?

Sometimes when you watch owls fly,

They go so slowly it seems as if

They won't be able to keep the flight

That's right, they fly very slowly

They are very, very close to stalling

But, of course, that's what they have to do

Because when they take a very, very slow ride,

..they are hunting

It might just be a little rustle in the grass,

So they should be in the position

..to fall from the sky

..and investigate it

- and you get a nice and delicious tasting - sure

(Al Owl) has developed the design of its wing

The perfect fit for their aerial hunting strategy.

slow but deadly

But the improvements don't stop there

These birds have controlled their flight

So each type has subtle adaptations

...for the environment in which he lives

.." like "barn owl,

These short-eared owls have very large and broad wings.

...perfect for flying slowly

While hunting on open ground

owls that live in the forests,

..." like "the brown owl,

It has shorter, more rounded wings,

To help them maneuver between the trees

...wherever they are,

All albums have an amazing aerial agility

They are even able to..take off vertically

from a dead end

It's a great defensive move,

Especially when you have little ones to protect

Squaw ("Arctic") .. Diving is unparalleled

.."for the" snowy owl

This mastery of the heavens

It seems to make these owls fearless, even against

One of the largest predators in the Arctic

Her bravery and superior skills .. drives the wolves away

..and her family is safe

Owls have another amazing superpower.

..and this is totally unique

Lloyd and Rose noticed something.

(Note with the barn owl ( 11-year-old Kinsa .)

When you fly across the meadow,

She is quiet in mysterious circumstances

How quiet is a barn owl hunting?

(Sweeping)

you can find it outside,

Lloyd took Kinsa ...to a private studio

Where is Graham and the voice recorder, Gary Moore

He will put it to the test

..) against "jamming", from (the bathroom

.." and "Musa Al-Shaheen"

Challenge the birds?

To fly over a series of ultra-sensitive microphones

..good girl

Musa? Mo?

Now it's Kinsa's turn

(Kinsa)

Did you hear something?

Fabulous! No, absolutely nothing , completely quiet

..it was amazing

But what did the microphones pick up?

The decibel wave is formed

It shows the sound that birds make in flight

Each altitude is a single wing strike

But with Barn Owl ... there's almost nothing.

...even our group

Ultra-sensitive microphones are not captured

No sound from Kinsa during flight

Nothing.. absolutely nothing

I will play it again

!there is no sound

This is really impressive , isn't it?

It shows that they are indeed..silent fliers

.."how" barn owl

fly silently?

When air moves, it generates sound

The more movement, the louder the sound

The body (pigeon) is large and wings are small

It means it can't stay in the air

...without a lot of fast palpitations

This creates turbulence in the feathers below

The peregrine falcon has much larger wings.

It uses it to increase speed and hunt its prey

"Barn Owl"

She is much more slender

Kensa's large wings and small body

It is easy for them to generate lift force

Just one nice wing strike

He sees it flying in the air... effortlessly

And create a little more than a whisper

..in the feathers below

..but that's not the only thing

Which helps the Barn Owl achieve a semi-silent flight

It has an amazing adaptation that reduces air movement

..Beyond that

Its flight feathers have noise -reducing tips

...on the front and back edges

And they have a velvet-like top to them

These smooth surfaces

absorb air movement,

Reduce any turbulence and reduce the sound

Silent journey is crucial part

...from the barn owl hunting strategy

Allowing them to get close to their prey is not audible

But like every supernatural creature,

..."Her Album" Kryptonite

..Is raining

This male is a short-eared owl

He has a young family in the nest

When it rains they are all in danger

Because there is a price to pay for owning silent feathers

It can't be waterproof either

..the female is hanging out

She can't move

Or the chicks will be at risk of hypothermia

..the male struggles too

He can't hear his prey..during the rain

Therefore, his family will go hungry..today

Wet weather can be fatal to owls

..that is one of the reasons

Some people don't go through their first winter

Learn to search for themselves

It is the challenge that all young owls face

..if they will survive

Baby owls grow between..four and five weeks

Then, their parents encourage them

...to defend themselves

Adults usually catch mice

and other small mammals

But these guys..they don't have the experience

To face such a difficult prey

So, they start practicing something a little easier

Earthworms will not be enough to see them during the winter

...but great at sharpening

fishing style

As birds of prey, owls are defined by their habits

for hunting small animals

Mastery of killing is a critical survival skill

..but it's obviously not easy

So, what exactly do little ones need to learn?

To find out the answer, bring Lloyd (Kensa) to a meeting.

The animal movement scientist , Dr. Jim Osherwood

Together, they will try to break up

The moment it pounces on its prey

...) in Jim's lab,

They have created a small hunting ground

..hidden under the grass

They are special panels that enable (C) to measure

...the power is in play

..(Teach "Lloyd" (Kinsa .)

..to associate food with a whistling sound

When "Rose" presses the button,

The box makes a sound

And Kinsa knows where to find her food

You are smart, old barn owl

How much power then

Do you exercise on the swoop?

So here we have the vertical forces of the owl

..So, there is strength

..from take off,

Then you see some fairly strong paintings ,

..then dilute the gas,

Gravity is used to get back quickly,

It hits the ground at a speed of about five meters per second.

..Strongly

..nearly 12 times your body weight

This is the moment when the owl must come

..all her unique powers together

hung in the air silently,

Kinsa uses her hearing and her sight

..to find its target

She angles her face to determine the sound

Once it is locked,

Putting her entire body..to pounce

Then what I find really interesting is,

Look, when you come down

It's basically heading towards Earth

And only now the legs are moving forward,

..but the legs are still very bent

And then at the end stretch the legs,

And then you get that hit

Therefore, it descends at a speed of five meters per second,

It hits the Earth at about 12 times its body weight

..that would make sense,

because it mainly hunts small mammals,

So you want to hit them as hard as possible

...to disable and kill her

What I was thinking of is that

These long legs will be..helpful for relieving strength

But it does not loosen at all -

She actually stretches her legs

..as it hits the ground

Then he gives her a good old blow

..to put this into perspective,

Rebound force (kensa) to equalize

Eight-ton truck hits 170-pound man

It is unlikely that her prey will survive the impact

You don't want to be a mouse), do you, now?)

No, no, life would be short like a mouse

...the journey to perfection

These finely tuned superpowers start early

It's been three months since..Luna and Lily entered the world

Now, it's time to see if..if their skills combine together

Come on, Luna

..(Luna)

Mind your feet

- Laila, come here.. - Luna

(Luna and Lily) grew up

...in an exceptional family

And they became bold and confident birds

!yes

Luna)! You're not supposed to be on camera

(lily)

..good girl! Good girl

But despite their unusual upbringing,

..in the meadow

Their natural instincts begin

They hunt like an adult "barn owl",

...using all their superpowers.

Great eyesight and unusual hearing

And a slow and silent journey

Good girl, come on

... nature played its part

...and Lloyd and Rose did everything they could

To get both..birds for this moment

But as Lily continues to hone her skills,

..and live with them,

There was an unexpected development in her sister's story

one evening,

... (Luna flew)

..and she is no longer

For Lloyd, it's...a natural step from owl to adulthood,

I reassured him that he had prepared it

...with everything you need for an independent life

I gave her all the skills

...that you need to survive

I was her mother, she was chosen to go

This is her choice.

..and we always say they have that choice

..to stay or go

It's sad for me..because you really relate to them,

But they don't have decorations..human feelings

She just went out into the wild..to do her own thing

Now more than ever, you will adopt Luna

On those special skills..that distinguish owls

..for centuries, these charming birds

...you captured our imagination

..with their haunting calls

...and a ghostly appearance,

Owls add magic and mystery to our landscapes

Their charismatic faces..very familiar,

..maybe because

Looks much more human..than other birds

..but these are all their owl powers

Which makes them one of the most successful

The best and most beloved bird on our planet

To learn more about what I watched ...on this "Nature" show,
