Butterfly lighting or paramount lighting is achieved when
we have one light source above the subject,
giving us a shadow underneath the nose that
appears like a butterfly.
It's important to note that if we bring
the light source too close or too high
to the subject, the shadow of the nose
will cross that lip line and of course
we don't get any light in the subject's
eyes.
So it's important to note that we get
that light in that eye socket there, create
that beautiful shadow underneath the nose and we
get beautiful cheekbones and jawline and of course
this was popularized at Paramount Studios and all
the Hollywood stars back in the day that
would insist on using this kind of light
source because it's very flattering.
