Heron Island is surrounded by white sandy beaches,

which have been known to attract up to 1800 green turtles

during the nesting season, so it's the perfect location

to discover just how important these visitors are to this reef.

But sea turtles also play an incredibly important role

across all our oceans.

Here on Heron Island, the green turtle population has

already faced some great challenges in the past.

In the 1950s the island was home to a turtle cannery,

to make turtle soup.

But turtle numbers plummeted and the cannery was closed

16 years later soon after Heron Island resort opened.

Since then the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have been

monitoring the nesting population and numbers have been recovering.

To find out just how important Heron is to turtles,
