Heron Island is surrounded

during the nesting season,
so it's the perfect location

to discover just how important these
visitors are to this reef.

Here on Heron Island,
the green turtle population has

already faced some great challenges
in the past.

In the 1950s the island was home
to a turtle cannery,

to make turtle soup.

But turtle numbers plummeted
and the cannery was closed

16 years later soon
after Heron Island resort opened.

Since then the Queensland Parks
and Wildlife Service have been

monitoring the nesting population
and numbers have been recovering.
