The Legend of White Snake

Episode 26

You don't dislike him now? So that means you like him?

Yes.

Elder Sister, I think Zhang Yutang is a very nice guy.

Also, he's a righteous man and we are compatible. I want...

I want... just like you and your husband...

I want to be with him.

Why cover your face?

I'm shy.

He's a mortal. Are you sure you don't look down on him?

I know. Mister Xu is also a mortal, but you both are so good together.

Elder Sister, I'll learn to be good to Yutang.

I'll follow your lead.

My Lady.

My Lady, you're worried and perplexed. Is it all because of Xiao Qing?

The way I see it, a grown girl has a mind of her own. Brother Yutang's character is honest and nice and he cares about Xiao Qing.

If we entrust Xiao Qing to him, there's nothing you need to worry about.

I'm not worrying about the affection between them.

But it's about a matter of life and death.

A matter of life and death? That serious?

Let me tell you the truth.

Even though Yutang may not care about Xiao Qing's identity, however, once they're married,

Xiao Qing's demonic poison can kill him immediately.

You don't know that back then, without Guan Yin's guidance of placing my spirit core inside your body,

at this moment, we both would be separated by death.

Spirit core?

So this is not something fabricated by people. There really is such a thing.

All vegetation and fossils, birds and animals, absorb the spiritual essence of heaven and earth.

Those who have spirituality can cultivate themselves to become spirits. They transform what they have cultivated into spirit cores.

From then on, they advance their cultivation to strengthen their whole being.

Then, My Lady, you gave me your spirit core,

wouldn't that make you lose the core of your strength? Are you not feeling well?

I already have a thousand years of cultivation. I can still bear the pain of losing the spirit core.

Even so, an adversity will strike every 100 days. Cultivation in seclusion is needed then.

So that's what it is.

Xiao Qing is different. She only has five hundred years of cultivation.

If she loses her spirit core, she'll be back to her original form. I want to help them,

but I can't bear to see Yutang die of poisoning and I don't want Xiao Qing to face any danger.

I'm caught in a dilemma and truly worried.

Looks like we'll have to let them see each other less.

This stack of medicine with the name "Yu" written on it is for Madam Yu.

This stack with the name "Li" is for Councillor Li on Qing Yi Lane.

And this last stack of medicine with the name "Qin" written on it is for the carpenter Mister Qin's family on the Ninth Street. Absolutely no mistake in making the delivery.

Don't worry, Physician Xu.

Zhang Yutang! You... You're going somewhere?

Yes. Physician Xu asked me to deliver medicine to a few patients.

Let me go with you.

Xiao Qing,

I remember a few days ago you said you wanted to get some new clothes for the spring.

New arrivals just came into Lingluo Silk Boutique yesterday. How about we go there to take a look?

There's no hurry, or we can go tomorrow?

The goods in Lingluo Boutique are always in high demand. If we go tomorrow, we can only choose from what's left behind.

Therefore, we better go today.

Xiao Qing, you have something to do. I'll go first.

Hurry and leave!

- Zhang Yutang! - Xiao Qing!

Let us also leave immediately.

Let's go!

Please take care, ladies.

Hi.

Physician Bai. Miss Xiao Qing. Did you come to see the new fabrics?

I especially brought Xiao Qing here today to have some new clothes tailored for her.

Sure. Wait a moment.

Take a look.

Isn't this Sky Water Green?

Physician Bai, you have good eyes. This Sky Water Green's quality is first-rate.

Xiao Qing, using this Sky Water Green fabric to make clothes matches your complexion the most.

If you had come late, you would've missed this opportunity.

It's good since you say so.

Look!

Miss Xiao Qing, I'll let you see something good. Take a look at this fragrance pouch.

Are they a set?

Exactly. Look at the mandarin ducks embroidery.

If you wear these clothes while your beloved carries the fragrance pouch,

wouldn't that be just the right match? Steadfast loyalty. Unforgettable joyous love.

Owner, I'll take this one!

Miss Xiao Qing, it's a pity that this fragrance pouch has already been reserved by someone. I apologize.

Why would you take it out when someone already reserved it? How disappointing!

I'm sorry. This... This...

I just wanted to take it out to open your eyes; check out my daughter's embroidery.

No matter how good the embroidery is, you're still not selling it to us. Let's go.

- What about this fabric? - Owner, please send this fabric to Baohe Hall.

- Thanks! - All right! - Let's go.

Think there's nothing I can do if someone already reserved it?

Brother Zhang, cook this slowly over a gentle fire.

Reduce three bowls down to one bowl. Hurry.

Will do, Physician Xu.

Xiao Qing. Xiao Qing!

Don't block me. Yutang is back from delivering the medicine. I just happen to see him. There's something I want to give him.

Yesterday, My Lady was saying that my fragrance pouch was too old

and wanted to gift me a new one. Thanks!

This one actually... isn't sent by Elder Sister.

It's not? No wonder.

I was wondering why My Lady would give me a pouch made by such an inauspicious fabric.

What inauspicious? Isn't this a fragrance pouch symbolizing

steadfast loyalty, affection for life?

If I'm not mistaken,

this fabric is Sky Water Green?

Correct.

Then, do you know the origin of Sky Water Green?

This... Isn't this the fabric house owner shipped from Yangzhou?

Looks like you really don't know. Then, do you know Li Yu?

Which Li Yu?

He wrote the poem "How much sorrow can a person carry?"

The final ruler of Southern Tang. You can't not know him, right?

How can I not know? I'm actually someone who, at the garden of Southern Tang Palace,

I bathed in the garden pond. I just forgot for a moment.

Doesn't the poem continue "Like the spring torrent flowing eastward"?

Then, do you know why Li Yu had so much sorrow?

Stop keeping me in suspense; don't beat around the bush.

Can you tell me why this Sky Water Green is not auspicious?

Li Houzhu, (T/N: means "Last Ruler Li")

had an alluringly beautiful wife. She was known as Queen Zhou the Younger.

This woman loved the color green and would personally dye the silks.

She used night time dew to make the coloring.

Unexpectedly, she successfully made a bright green color.

Because the dew came from the sky,

it was called Sky Water Green.

The husband and wife couple

wore clothes made from Sky Water Green and were loving and inseparable.

Who knew...

Who knew what?

Not more than half a month later, Southern Tang was destroyed by the founder of our dynasty.

Li Houzhu was killed. When he died,

he was wearing clothes made from Sky Water Green cloth.

After that, Queen Zhou the Younger also died sadly.

She was also wearing a dress made from Sky Water Green fabric.

I'm afraid the mandarin ducks embroidered on this Sky Water Green,

aren't inseparable lovers,

but a couple with an early demise, instead.

Why the sigh?

I have done some inappropriate things today.

Fortunately, you were quick-witted. Otherwise, Xiao Qing would've given the fragrance pouch to Yutang,

then wouldn't everything have been ruined?

My Lady, if you did not have a thousand years of cultivation

and could not use your spirit core to extend my life,

would you still be with me?

If the price for us to be together was your life,

I would have left you.

My Lady,

if we were to switch places, if you were together with me

and your life would have been in danger,

would you have left me?

Of course not. I wouldn't regret dying a hundred times if we could be together.

My Lady, our hearts are the same.

If you did not have a thousand years of cultivation, you would have left me.

I would rather die than lose you.

Neither of us would be willing to hurt the other.

But in fact, making a choice on behalf of the other person,

is what's truly most harmful.

What you mean is...

If that love poison can be detoxified,

would you still break up Xiao Qing and Zhang Yutang?

Our doing this might look like it's for their own good,

but they may not feel the same way.

My Lord, I understand what you mean,

but Xiao Qing and Yutang are not the same as us.

They had only just fallen in love, and there's still time to pull back before it's too late.

If that love poison could be detoxified, of course, I wouldn't stop them.

But that love poison is the law of nature making things difficult between humans and demons.

To detoxify the poison, it's not that easy.

My Lady, look at what's recorded in this book by Qi Xie.

A god's blood can suppress a demon's power. If that is true,

then maybe it can also mask the laws of nature, and solve the love problems between demons and humans.

My Lord, you are considerate. I thank you on behalf of Xiao Qing.

If a god's blood can detoxify the love poison, of course, that would be great.

But I'm afraid this god's blood is difficult to obtain.

There's a way!

Love comes from the heart; it's difficult for outside forces to hold it back.

I hope to think of a surefire plan to allow Xiao Qing to obtain her heart's desire, and she won't get hurt from it.

Miss Bai, we won't hide it from you.

All of us are minor gods from the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace.

Even if Brother Yutang drank our godly blood, it wouldn't be enough to go against the celestial laws,

and it'll still be difficult to suppress the love poison.

In order to resist this love poison, we need to use the blood of a higher god.

In the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace, only the Dragon King is a higher god.

Xiao Qing, she...

her half immortal body actually came from her father, the Eastern Sea Dragon King.

I only knew that Xiao Qing is related to the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace. I didn't know she's the Dragon King's daughter.

Since it's like this, how can we help Xiao Qing?

We need to obtain ten drops of true dragon blood in order to suppress the demonic love poison.

Since she's his own daughter, he'll certainly fulfill his daughter's wish.

I'll leave this place to you. I'm making a trip to the Dragon Palace.

Miss Bai... Miss Bai! We're not finished speaking!

If Xiao Qing knows that her father is the Dragon King, I don't know if she'll be happy or sad.

Based on her personality, maybe she wouldn't be that grateful.

Where did the Current Directing Badge go?

I don't know. I deserve to die. This humble servant will go find it.

Hold on.

Finish drinking this Forget Love Water before leaving.

Great King, please have mercy on me! Great King!

This Forget Love Water is the tears of the deep blue sea. It's your honor that I'm bestowing it upon you.

Your Majesty is a true dragon! Drinking this, you can forget all your troubles!

But if I were to drink this water, I'll forget the people I love most.

Even my wife and children will be forgotten.

You're going to search throughout the four seas, exhausting your life.

Why still care about your wife and children?

If you can't find that Current Directing Badge, the Celestial Execution Platform will be your final resting place.

Current Directing Badge? This should be kept carefully.

Why is it here? Seems it should be handed over to the Dragon King.

Reporting! Reporting to Great King. The Current Directing Badge has been found.

Hand it over.

This is great!

Since this has returned to its original owner, may the Dragon King not punish his subordinate.

Leave.

- Thank you, young lady! Thank you, young lady! - Please get up.

If this Current Directing Badge had fallen into someone else's hands,

it would surely bring a fatal disaster upon the Easter Sea Dragon Palace.

Luckily, this young lady returned it in time, so I can stop worrying.

Come! Fetch ten vessels of pearls and bestow them upon this young lady.

Please wait.

I merely returned an item to its rightful owner. Dragon King need not be courteous.

However, I, Suzhen, came this time with a different request.

Dismissed.

May the Dragon King bestow upon me ten drops of dragon blood in order to help his dragon daughter, Xiao Qing, overcome some difficulty in the mortal world.

Dragon daughter?

Xiao Qing?

The entire world knows that

I only have nine sons. Where would a dragon daughter come from?

- Xiao Qing resided at West Lake. She was attended to by four gods from the Eastern Sea. Could you have forgotten five hundred years ago... - Enough!

Snake spirit, you dare entrap me?

Does the Dragon King mean to deny this daughter's existence?

I only have nine sons in charge of the world's seas and rivers, moving the clouds and winds.

There is no daughter, and I don't know of any Yu Furong.

Suzhen never mentioned Yu Furong and I also don't know who she is.

I don't know why Dragon King reacted so strongly.

Xiao Qing is innocent and innately sincere. She's a good girl.

You shouldn't treat her like this.

I'm just getting involved in this mess for the sake of fulfilling her fated love.

Scram!

Since it's like this, then don't blame Suzhen for being rude.

White Snake,

I'll take into account you returning the Current Directing Badge,

and I'll let you go.

If you still want to stand up for Xiao Qing,

I'll have you die with no burial place.

Five hundred years without any contact, I should have predicted this ending.

Xiao Qing, I have no ability to help you.

I can only break up your relationship.

I hope you can understand my difficulties.

My Lady, let me.

You visited the Eastern Sea. How did you end up hurting like this?

That Dragon King is simply heartless and unfaithful.

Since he won't help Xiao Qing, then what should we do?

Xiao Qing is half immortal, Yutang being together with her,

maybe his poison will spread more slowly than yours did.

But Guan Yin said that in regards to this love poison from a demon,

the deeper the love is, the more potent the poison is.

If they want to commit to each other and have any intimate acts,

I think her half immortal blood won't be able to overcome the celestial laws.

If we want to protect Yutang's life, we can't continue to allow the two to be close.

Then... I'll send Yutang to Suzhou to buy some medicines.

Temporarily separate them, how's that?

This is a mere hundred miles, how can it stop Xiao Qing?

Then... let's explain clearly to Xiao Qing.

At this point, we can only do that.

But based on Xiao Qing's personality, we won't be able to persuade her.

This can only start with Yutang.

You're his employer. It's unavoidable that

if he finds your words disagreeable, he may just resign.

Therefore, in regards to this matter, I can't help but be the bad guy.

[Baohe Hall]

Physician Bai, are you looking for me?

Sit down.

Yutang, you know that

Xiao Qing is my best little sister.

In my heart, she's like a real sister to me.

I know. Your minds are connected.

Xiao Qing also said that in her eyes, you're her real sister.

Xiao Qing has been doted upon by us all of her life. She's never suffered hardship.

As a sister, I only hope that she can live a carefree and happy life.

So many people care for Xiao Qing, she'll be happy and blessed for sure!

But...

if she plans to stay with someone incompatible,

how can she be happy and blessed?

How can Xiao Qing...

Physician Bai, you mean...

Yutang, you're straightforward, bold, and dependable.

You're an upright man that's difficult to find.

I believe that with your character,

you'll surely be able to find a young lady who's compatible with you in the future.

Physician Bai, I understand.

I'm not a good match for Xiao Qing.

I won't bother her anymore in the future.

What do you understand? You don't understand anything.

Xiao Qing.

Elder Sister, why did you say such things to Yutang?

Is it because in your eyes, you're compatible with Mister Xu, yet I'm not compatible with Yutang?

- Xiao Qing! - Xiao Qing.

He...

He's illiterate and has no money and doesn't even have a place to live,

so how can he provide you with comfort and fortune?

Comfort and fortune?

I don't care.

Elder Sister, I trusted you so much and told you everything;

yet, behind me, you...

You try to separate us behind my back.

You are too much.

Yutang, in this world, besides ourselves,

no one can break us up.

Xia... Xiao Qing!

Xiao Qing! Xiao Qing!

Miss Xiao Qing, please calm down.

I've never been so calm before.

Your sister thinks for your own good.

Moreover, I don't like you at all.

It's okay if you don't like me, as long as I like you.

A forcibly picked melon won't be sweet.

Moreover, whether we can be together

requires mutual consent.

Zhang Yutang, right now, am I loving but you're not willing?

Correct!

Fine! We're halfway to success already.

Tell me. What do you not like about me?

Can't say anything, right?

I'm actually quite perfect, right?

Even if I'm not perfect, I can become perfect. Is that right?

If I become perfect, you'll like me. Right?

No!

I, Zhang Yutang, am just a worker at the pharmacy.

I'm not even clear about my own origins.

I have no money, no land. I don't even have a decent house.

You being together with me is like a flower on a pile of cow manure. (T/N: she is out of his league) I won't be able to give you happiness.

Flowers can survive on a pile of manure. They'd die if grown on a pile of gold.

Your sister, and other people... none of them will agree.

I don't care if they agree or not. I'm not afraid. What are you afraid of?

I just want to be together with you. I really don't care about anything else.

Miss Xiao Qing, don't be like this.

Your sister has come!

Zhang Yutang! Zhang Yutang!

Zhang Yutang!

Are you having a mortal world's mind?

And are physically attracted to that worker at the pharmacy?

It's none of your business. Move aside.

Bai Suzhen recklessly succumbed to mortal desires and married Xu Xian. That's already impermissible behavior.

You shouldn't plant the sinful love in the mortal world.

Or else, the consequence are unimaginable.

You emotionless and heartless stinky monk,

do you even know what sinful love is?

What's wrong with my elder sister being with Physician Xu? Whom do they bother?

You are such a busybody.

You are still quibbling? As a snake spirit,

you indulge in human lust and tempt him with your beauty.

I won't allow you to follow Bai Suzhen's footsteps.

Let's go. Return to Jinshan Temple with me.

Get out of the way.

Move or not?

Someone! Help! Someone is robbing a woman!

- Help! - Stop!

This monk again?

Leave now; or else, I will arrest you and take you to the official.

Expose her. Expose this evil doer.

She hasn't hurt anyone. Exposing her right now... First, it will shock the world.

Second, if she counter attacks, it's difficult to clarify.

Then, revert her to the original form.

Let everyone spurn her.

You still care about me?

I will escort you back to Baohe Hall. Okay?

No. My most important task now is to help you.

- Help me? - Yes.

You care about your identity. I will go with you to find it.

I will never regret my decisions.

Zhang Yutang,

I... like you.

At least, it won't change for a hundred years.

Are you... willing to like me?

I am.

Fa Hai, o' Fa Hai, you are really useless.

That Xiao Qing has started to tempt people's hearts.

Yet you don't know what to do.

Go kill Bai Suzhen. Kill Xiao Qing.

Kill those evildoers!

Although the green and white snakes are evildoers,

I've never seen them harm a single person.

People are differentiated by good and evil. Can't demons be the same?

Absurd. No demons are willing to cultivate in the mountains and endure years of hardship.

Fa Hai, do you want to personally see people plunged into misery before you're content?

Since your heart is kind and hands are soft,

let me handle it instead.

Why are there so many evildoers?

Here.

This is for you.

Did you really come here in the past?

There are a few tea and wine shops here.

After my foster father completed his hunt, he would bring them here for sale.

The shopkeeper at the time even teased my foster father.

He said that I was dressed in silks and satin,

I didn't look like the son of a hunter.

I looked more like a rich kid instead.

You dressed like a rich person?

Then it's very possible that you're a rich family's son who'd been kidnapped.

I remember... my foster father said that when he found me,

I was in shock and grabbed his coat tightly.

I couldn't speak a single word.

Besides the clothes I was wearing, there was nothing valuable on me.

Then, where are those clothes now?

Gone long ago.

However, the flower patterns on those clothes were

very complex.

I remember...

they were like this.

Lotus flowers?

Very few people dress their children in such a pattern.

Unless... it's a Buddhist wealthy family,

then they would use this kind of pattern. What else do you remember?

At the top, there seemed to have been two

- big cats facing each other. - Big cats?

Even two of them.

This makes me think of... if I'm not wrong,

it's the pattern of lions gazing at the moon.

Saying that makes me recall something.

There's a blank space at the chest of those clothes.

It should be where the longevity ornament hung previously.

That's right!

So it means that that person took away your longevity ornament.

Then, we only need to visit the pawnshop now to find some clues.

- Let's split. I'll go east, you go west. - Okay.

Let's go.

You, that way. Me, this way.

Shopkeeper, do you have any longevity ornaments here?

We do. What kind would you like?

I like antiques. Ten years old is fine.

There are.

There are! There are!

Please wait. I'll find some for you immediately.

Young Lady, these are all top class items.

Jade hare, Lotus flower.

It's this one! Finally found it after running half a day.

This one.

This... you can't take it. It's not an overdue pawn.

Then, who provided the security?

- It's... crippled Old Third. - Crippled Old Third?

Where is he? I'll find him to discuss it.

I... I only know that he's a gambling addict.

He treats this longevity ornament like a good luck charm.

Every time he loses, he puts it up as security.

After that, he'd win everything back.

Therefore, this ornament became our frequent customer. If he wins,

he'll return to reclaim this longevity ornament.

High! High! High!

- High! High! High! - Open it! Open it! Open it!

- Open it! Open it! - Open it! Open it!

High! We've won!

This... This...

Sorry... I've won. Two points higher than you.

Old Third.

Why so dazed? Go in!

Recently, my luck hasn't been good. I lost everything.

Tell me. If I go in again and lose this leg,

I'll only be able to crawl in my remaining years.

Didn't you know? A new dealer came today.

She doesn't take anything when she wins. If she loses, she doubles the return!

- Such a good thing? - Yes.

- Are you serious? - I'm serious.

I need money. Let's go.

[Casino]

Who else will challenge me?

Me!

Everyone, make way... make way!

- Young Lady. - Why is he here?

- I want to try. - Fine!

If you win, all of these are yours.

If you lose, I won't take a single coin.

- Really? - Truly.

Xiao Qing! Xiao Qing!

Physician Bai, has Xiao Qing come back yet?

Xiao Qing? Isn't she with you?

We agreed to meet from three to five in the afternoon, but I've waited for four hours,

I still don't see a trace of her.

Not good! Xiao Qing is in danger!
