about the Death Valley country.

My yarn this evening
is about the chivaree

that broke all records
in the Death Valley region.

You never heard of a chivaree?

Well, neither did
Jay Kenniston Phipps,

until he came out
to Death Valley
on a prospecting trip,

looking not for gold,
nor silver, nor borax,

but for moths
and butterflies.

they brought in reinforcements.

Almost 48 hours, now,
they'd been at it,

with neither side
showing any signs of yielding.

[ whooping continues ]

And then, toward midnight
of the second night--

The silence seems louder
than the noise.

staged his final attack.

Kenniston, what was that?

[ explosion ]
[ whooping resumes ]
