So when my old college buddy
Jeff Stone

asked me to help him build
an environmentally efficient,

all-plastic engine,

he didn't have to twist my arm
to say yes.

Then Jeff lost his ride
with the Strickland team

just before the championship race
here at Westwood Springs,

so I got Phoenix to bail him out
with another car.

And I got to test it.

Come on, let her rip!

This wet track is proving hazardous

but it does not seem to be dampening
Jeff Stone's determination.

- How's his time, O'Malley?

One-twenty. He's slow.

Don't worry about it.
Dad's just warming up.

ANNOUNCER: --right to the edge
when it comes to winning

this much-coveted pole position.

He is fighting for it,
really burning up the track.

down the back straightaway.

Look at that rooster tail!

That fuel-efficient plastic engine
seems to be doing the trick here.

Oh, he's got a lot of catching up to do
if he hopes to beat the qualifying time

set by the Strickland entry.

he's gonna give it everything he's got
to challenge Hans Visser.

for the Phoenix team.

difficulties at the outset,

I am certain we'd be looking at
a new track record here.

It's hard to say at this stage
if it's that new Phoenix engine,

or Jeff Stone's years of experience
on the professional circuit,

but whatever it is, I tell you, it's adding
up to a very impressive showing.

We're watching him wobble a bit

As the drivers follow the pace car,

making the track
more treacherous than usual,

The drivers, now coming

driving the black Strickland car,

with MacGyver behind the wheel.

The field appears to be
in nice formation.

Okay, the pace car is off,

there's the green flag, they're off!

grabs an early lead
right off that green flag.

The rest of our field come through
safely. A nice start today.

I would have thought the drivers

will try to reel in Rick Payne.

He is right up on his bumper,

AN NOU NCER: MacGyver, though,

This Phoenix
has truly risen from the ashes,

dives to the inside. He'll have a go
