day that has routinely been

one of the most challenging
days of my life.

It's my late mom's birthday.

You see, my mom
made a huge impact

in our community, and it's sad

that her legacy was shrouded
by her complicated past.

But every single one of us knows

that growing up like we do,
life isn't obstacle-free.

Sometimes things get complicated

when you're just
trying to survive.

My mom was resilient

and smart,

and sadly, she didn't
get the opportunity

to rewrite her own
narrative before she passed.

But I'm here to do
so in her honor.

I'd like to tell you
all about a woman

who served the community
as a public defender,

a woman who helped people
that looked like you and I

get justice when others
turned a blind eye.

She recognised when our
people were being neglected,

and I'm realizing
that that's maybe part

of the legacy she left in me.

Doing something
about the neglected

in our own
backyard. That's why

I advocated to put this
event together tonight.
