Original subtitles

Wells Fargo never came up

against another outlaw quite like Kid Curry.

He was a craftsman in a tough trade.

The man in the street wasn't apt to hear too much about him.

He was interested in his work,

and he let other bad men make the headlines.

Then, almost by a fluke,

Kid Curry made the newspapers in a big way

and sparked a giant manhunt,

the greatest this country had ever seen.

It all began one night in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Well, as I remember, gentlemen, the bet was $10 a ball.

That means you boys owe me $150 apiece.

Well, I don't recall nothin' like that.

I mean, nothin' about playin' for money.

Why, us three here, we just shootin' for fun.

Ain't that right, boys?

How 'bout it, Turner?

They're welching on ya, Kid. They know the terms.

You know, where I come from,

man don't make a bet unless he intends to back it up.

Well, now, you ain't where you came from now, Yankee boy.

So why don't you just go on back there and try collectin'?

Oh, I'll collect,

or I'll take it outta your hides and lay them out to dry.

Well, now, you're welcome to try.

Watch him, Kid.

Oh, I'm watchin' him.

You keep your eye on the other two.

I got a stinger for you.

Oh, now, if you come at me with that knife,

I'm gonna have to take it away from you and dress you up.

All right, who's next?

He went for his gun.

Yeah?

It's the Cops! Let's get outta here!

Oh, I got a debt to collect first.

Well, I'm not hangin' around.

All right, I'll see you in Colorado.

Look up Jeannie. Jeannie Moran.

She always knows where to find me. Sure.

130.150.

It's Kid Curry!

Turner! Where are ya?

Wells Fargo, huh?

Mr. Hardie, what can I do for ya?

Tell me what you can about Harvey Logan.

Kid Curry?

What you want me to tell ya 'bout him?

Where is he?

He's out there in them hills somewhere.

That's the best I can answer.

Anybody lookin' for him?

Is there anybody that ain't,

considerin' how the weather's been the past three days?

After all, there's a $40,000 reward on his head.

I know.

Wells Fargo put up a good deal of that money.

We want him for the Blue Cut Wyoming Express robbery.

When they heard about the shooting of these two policemen down here,

they got on the wire and here I am.

Well, it's the Kid, all right.

One of the patrolmen recognized him.

Tagged him with a bullet, too.

And what about the man with him?

Now, who would that be?

Information I got said that he was traveling

with a man named Cype Turner from Colorado.

When they chased the Kid into the hills, he was alone.

Reckon he ain't alone now.

Must be upward a thousand men

out there, beatin' the brush after him.

You know, it's a funny thing...

Man try to get a posse together

usually he's lucky he get four or five men.

Not this time.

Well, I always say there's nothin' like a good, strong reward

to bring out the public spirit in people.

I'm gonna need a horse.

I'll lend you one.

You can pick him up out there at the stable.

Thank you.

You goin' after him, huh? Yep.

You must want him pretty bad.

Or are you lookin' for that 40,000, too?

No.

Wells Fargo pays me a good salary.

I don't ask for and don't take rewards.

Well, good luck, and good huntin'.

Thank you.

Good day.

MAN: Hold it.

That's an old road. Let's take this one.

CURRY: Don't move, stranger.

I'll blow a hole in ya big enough to walk through.

Come on out.

I been expecting you.

Maybe you don't think I got a gun in my hand.

Yes, I think you do,

but I don't believe you're gonna use it.

One shot and you'll bring more bounty hunters down on your head

than you you can ever hope to handle.

Maybe you got some kinda grudge against money, huh?

No, I haven't.

In fact, I could probably learn to like it,

but not that kinda money.

Then what do you want?

Who are you, mister?

My name's Hardie. Jim Hardie from Wells Fargo.

You helped a friend of mine once.

Johnny Ringo, remember him?

Yes, I do.

You can put that gun away.

I'm not gonna try to shoot it out with you.

Hmm, I credit you with that much sense.

What beats me all to thunder is,

how do you expect to win with this play?

I can't do anything but win,

just like you can't do anything but lose.

Why don't you come on in and get close to the fire?

You look cold.

In fact, you can put this jacket on.

I heard you were out here,

runnin' round the hills without a coat on.

You oughta have better sense than that.

Well, I come unprepared.

Anyway, I...

I figured it'd be a little bit warmer than this.

In Tennessee, it's in the South, ain't it?

Not that far south.

Oh, maybe I should've gone on to Colorado, like I figured.

I got friends there.

Get my shoulder fixed.

Is your shoulder hurt?

Well, now, what do you think?

You ever been shot?

Yes, I have.

Well, it hurts.

You oughta have a doctor look at it.

Well, now, thank you.

I'll just do that next time I get into town.

Now, look, let's cut out all this farce.

You know I'm gonna steal that bronc of yours, don't ya?

Just as quick as I get warmed up a little bit.

Or have you got that figured out, too?

I figured you know you wouldn't get very far,

not with half the state of Tennessee

in these hills lookin' for ya.

Oh? As big as that, huh?

And maybe bigger.

This state's never seen a manhunt like it.

And all because some pool hall tough

tried to welch on a bet.

I came out here to try to take you in alive, boy.

It's the only chance you've got.

Yeah?

What chance you figure I got in town?

None, maybe.

Least you'll have a little more time.

You can kill me, all right.

And maybe you could kill one or two others.

But people aren't the big battle here, it's the elements.

It's cold and hunger.

Pain.

You try fightin' those, and you'll lose.

All right.

All right, I'm near dead on my feet, anyhow.

Freezin' for three days,

no food, no sleep.

All right, here.

Catch.

You don't happen to have any food

in them saddle bags of yours, do ya?

Yes, help yourself.

Well, leavin' already?

I did what I came to do.

I've got some business over in Nashville to take care of.

Is Curry givin' you any trouble?

Not in the slightest.

Matter of fact, he's pretty calm.

Would you like to see him?

Suppose I should. Go ahead.

Hello, Kid.

Well...

Hello there.

How's your shoulder?

Oh, it's fine. I'm just wearin' that for the Doc.

I thought you'd be off somewheres by now.

Well, I'm on my way.

Just stopped by to say hello.

Where'll they send you next?

Nashville. After that, who knows?

Well, I may see ya around.

If you mean that the way I think you do,

I wouldn't bet on it.

No?

Oh, this jail won't hold me long.

Sound pretty sure of yourself.

I am.

Then there's no need to argue about that, is there?

I'll be on my way, Kid. Good luck to ya.

So long.

Uh, Hardie...

I just heard Wells Fargo sent a man out

to my Auntie Lee's place in Missouri last week.

Yes, I think they did.

They figured you might show up there.

My aunt's a good woman.

She did her best to raise me and Lonny and John.

She never believed nothin' bad about none of us boys.

Well, far as I know, she still doesn't.

Neighbors up there think a good deal of her.

Nobody's told her a thing.

I feel better to hear that.

If and when I do get outta here,

there'll be no need for Wells Fargo

to send a man out to Missouri to look for me.

That's one place I'll never go to,

leastwise not while I'm on the dodge.

Now, that's a promise.

All right.

Anything else on your mind?

One more thing, Hardie.

And you can take this as a promise, too.

If there is a second time, you won't be takin' me alive.

Remember that.

I will.

Hey, guard.

Help me tie this sling, will ya?

Please.

I was in Nashville

takin' care of some business for Wells Fargo

when I learned the news about Kid Curry.

He was in the headlines now, that's for sure.

Paper, sir?

That day in the jail,

the Kid had really called the next hand.

In a few days,

there I was, heading back to Knoxville

to start the hunt all over again.

Yes, Hardie. I thought I'd be seeing you again.

Now, don't bother saying what you're thinking. I know.

You brought him in, and we lost him.

With a man as shrewd as he is, there's no use blaming anyone.

Question is, how do we get him back?

Well, the way I figure

he didn't bother hanging around this area very long.

I think he disappeared and fast.

The first thing we did was to check

with his hometown place in Missouri.

No sign of him there, naturally.

No.

Frankly, I don't know what to do now.

You gonna try again?

Got no alternative.

It's my assignment.

Where you gonna look?

Well, Wyoming's always been

a favorite stomping ground of his.

Probably telegraph a few people up there.

But you don't really think he's gone there.

No, I don't.

I've got a hunch.

He talked a good deal about Colorado,

and he traveled with a man from there.

If nothing better shows up,

I think I'll probably be heading that direction.

I sent my wires, and I got my answers.

No word of the Kid in Wyoming.

No word of him in Missouri or Montana,

or any of the other places where I might have traced him.

My Colorado sources had no line on Cype Turner, either.

But my hunch was as strong as ever.

Then they did turn up something.

A singer in a cheap bar,

who at one time had been known as Cype Turner's girl.

Wasn't too much of a lead,

but it was enough to act on.

A few hours later, I was on the rails bound for Colorado.

Girls like Jeannie Moran weren't all entirely alike,

but I have found they ran pretty much to a pattern.

She didn't look to me like any exception.

If I could have some beer, please, sir.

You want something better than beer, don't you?

Well, you call it.

Maybe then you'll have a drink with me.

Sure, thanks.

Charlie, this fella looks like a gentleman to me.

Like somebody who'd go for some of that special stock.

Let's have a look.

Now, that looks pretty good.

I'll take the whole bottle

and a couple of glasses.

Like I say,

I can always spot a gentleman when I see one.

Aren't you gonna have one?

No.

No. Now that it's paid for,

you don't have to have one either if you don't want.

Frankly, I got so, I hate this stuff

but it's part of my job,

and a girl has to make a living.

That's what I figured.

So I was hoping, maybe we could just

talk for a little while.

What'll it be?

Story of my life?

No.

No, I was told you might be able to

help me find a man named Cype Turner.

I never heard that name.

Customers just walked in.

I don't think you and I have anything to talk about.

I don't think I'm wrong, Jeannie.

That is your name, isn't it, Jeannie Moran?

You could've found that out from Charlie.

I could've.

But what I know about you, I didn't find out from Charlie.

I was told if anyone could help me find Cype Turner,

it'd be you.

You used to be his girlfriend, I understand.

All right. Used to be.

But that was a long time ago.

Not so long ago, the way I heard it.

You must have some idea where he is.

You the law?

No.

No. I've got a proposition for Turner,

one I think he'll be interested in.

What kind of proposition?

It's a bank.

Everything's all laid out,

it's ready to go.

But I need another man.

Cype Turner would be perfect if I can find him.

What do you figure the job's worth?

About $20,000 for each of us.

Why should I do Cype Turner any favors?

The last time I helped him, he promised me something,

and I never saw a dime.

Here's a hundred dollars.

You can call that an advance or...

or a guarantee that this time you'll get your share.

All right.

He's hiding out in Paradox.

Where's that?

Little town over near the Utah border.

Has a friend with him name of Tap Duncan.

If you need a third man, he'll do.

I never heard of a Tap Duncan.

And if Turner's gonna try to bring an amateur in,

then the deal's off.

What if I were to tell you

Duncan's not this fellow's real name.

Take my word for it. He's just the one you want.

I can't take that chance.

Not even if I were to tell you

Tap Duncan's real name is Kid Curry.

Kid Curry?

This could be a lucky break for all of us.

Thank you, Jeannie.

You've been a big help.

You just tell that Cype Turner

I'm going to be expecting to hear from him.

I will.

Bartender.

My conscience might have bothered me just a little

if I'd have thought Cype Turner

really counted for anything with her.

But I really didn't think that needed to worry me.

My job, you have to pick up

your clues wherever you find 'em,

best way you can.

I picked up my own horse and took the trail to Paradox.

The hunt was narrowing down.

Kid.

Stranger just rode in.

He's over with the sheriff now.

Looks like your man.

Hardie?

How do you suppose he ever found out where we are?

Well, Jeannie's the only one I told.

You don't suppose she told him?

, what's the difference?

He's here now.

One thing about bein' on a dodge.

You wanna move, all you gotta do is

throw water on the fire and call the dogs.

Well, you're not going to let him chase you again.

Now, what would you suggest?

Well, you could call him out and shoot him,

or you could lay for him and get him that way,

if you didn't feel like facing the man.

You think I'm afraid of Hardie?

Well, the way you keep running,

I don't know what else you'd expect me to think.

Maybe I don't wanna shoot him.

He treated me decently back there in Tennessee,

when somebody I could name run out on me.

Run out? Now, wait just a minute.

It wasn't that way. I never...

No?

Don't tell me you never.

I know your breed.

You'd quit me in a minute if it suits you.

That ain't the truth.

Yeah?

And you'd sell me out for the reward, too, I wouldn't doubt.

What, Kid? We're partners.

Partners? With me?

What ever gave you that notion?

Maybe I better get out of here right now.

Yeah, maybe you better.

Just as good a time as any,

if you don't like the way I travel.

I'm on the move.

All right, Kid.

If that's the way you feel about it.

Good luck.

Well, I guess I'd better round up a posse.

Where do we find him?

There's one little thing we've got to clear up first.

I want this reward money, Sheriff,

every cent, all $40,000.

Is that clear?

Perfectly clear.

I don't want any part of it.

Well, that's fine talk, Sheriff,

but we ain't believin' it.

You figure to be pretty big around here,

lawman who bagged Kid Curry?

That's where you're wrong, Turner.

You're gonna be the big man around these parts maybe.

It's too bad a man can't pick the tools

he has to work with in this business.

SHERIFF: You're right about that, Hardie.

Let's go.

There he is, Sheriff, just where I told he'd be.

Let's go get him. Hey, wait a minute.

You know, it kinda seems to me

as long as Turner here is claiming all that reward,

be only fair to let him make the capture all by himself.

Me?

You were his partner.

You know his tricks.

Well, now, wait.

That... That wasn't the bargain we made.

I'm-I'm willing to do my part, but...

But I never said I'd take him alone.

We'll be behind you.

Right behind you.

Well, look, forget what I said

about wanting all the money, huh?

There's enough to go around.

I-I-I'm willing to split it up.

I don't know of anybody here that wants any part of that reward.

Besides, the way the poster reads,

if a man doesn't take part in the capture,

he doesn't take part in the reward.

That's the way I'd take it.

Well, Turner?

He won't be back. Let's go get him.

You two wait here.

Throw down your gun, Kid.

Give yourself up.

You haven't got a chance. They're all around you now.

Give yourself up.

You remember what I told you

back in that jail in Knoxville?

I said you'd never take me alive.

I meant it.

An outlaw like Kid Curry

has his own strange code of ethics.

Doesn't make sense sometimes

to decent, law-abiding citizens.

I've never been able to figure out

how an outlaw thinks anyway,

so I won't try now.
