season is on a knife's edge.

I mean, that's it.

It's the right thing to do,
but it's pretty up, you know.

With his crew spread thin

after just one week running
sulfur creek's pre-stripped ground,

Parker's smash and
grab gamble for fast gold

is already on pause.

Time is not our friend this year.

It's been a rough one.

We're well short of that
10,000-ounce target I set this spring,

and it's a little disheartening.

It's a bit scary.

So far this season,

Parker's cuts have delivered
less than 3,500 ounces,

way off his gold target.

10,000 ounces this spring is now 8,000,

but we're still nowhere near even 8,000,

so that's a problem.

With sulphur shut down,

Parker's only running two
wash plants at dominion creek,

where he's still trying to figure
out where the good gold is,

but the young mine boss has a plan.

So, big red moving.

So that's gonna go upstream,

where we have this red gravel

that goes to the white channel gravel,

kind of intermediate level of pay.

To the best of my knowledge,

nobody's ever sluiced
that red gravel before.

At the southern end of
the 114-acre bridge cut,

big red has sluiced the top
pay dirt layer for seven weeks.

Parker now wants to move the
wash plant half a mile upstream

to a new spot in the middle of the cut,

where he's already stripped
16 feet of overburden

and found a layer of red gravel

- which Parker thinks could bank him $1.
- 5 million in gold.

He's dug out the red 15-foot layer

and stockpiled it ready for sluicing,

leaving a layer of
frozen white channel pay

to thaw for next season.

A hopper feeder's tail drum

rolls the belt around the conveyor,

but its worn out jagged edges

will tear the belt if it's not replaced.

figure you need with her?

Parker really wanted this thing
running for night shift tonight.

Without this feeder, we're
not gonna be sluicing.

You know, I was really hoping
to get big red up and running,

and, you know, Parker's
not gonna be happy about it,

but we're definitely not
sluicing tonight, that's for sure.

This cut is a gamble.

We gotta get back where
we know the good gold is,

and, you know, it's gonna be a risk.

We've got a limited
amount of time this season,

and if this water license
doesn't get renewed, you know,

this will be our last chance here,

so I gotta get to pay.

Rick ness is making the greatest
gamble of his mining career

in what could be his last
season ever at Duncan creek.

Rick's taking out 400

of the 900-plus ounces
he made from rally valley

on his new cut, Vegas valley.

I know the guys trust me.

They're gambling their
gold bonuses on this.

As expected, they were all in.

Everybody's behind this, and
that's what we need to get this done.

But at the end of the
day, we gotta haul ass.

We don't know if there's gonna be

a million dollars' worth of gold
down there or nothing at all,

so it's a big chance that we're
taking to get to the bottom here.

It's a gamble, but Rick
seems to like to gamble,

so it should hopefully pay off for us.

We could have all gone
home with money in our pockets

and all been doing extremely well,

but we came here to conquer.

Rally valley took me two
years to get to the bottom,

and this cut's just as deep as that.

I mean, it's 210 feet to bedrock,

and I've only got two months to
get to the bottom, not two years, so

I mean, right now, these trucks
are setting the pace, you know,

they're hauling about 10,000
yards of overburden a day.

You know, these guys
are making great progress,

but there's a lot riding on this.

It's gonna be a stretch.

At Duncan creek,

half a mile downstream from rally valley,

sits Vegas valley,
where Rick's risking it all

to find the same nugget-rich pay streak

that lies under 160 feet of overburden.

To dig down, he's bench cutting,

carving step-like zones into the hillside

to reduce the risk of landslides

and reach the 50-foot pay layer

that Rick hopes will deliver
over $2 million in gold.

80-plus degrees.

It's not my kinda day.

It's dusty as out here right now.

It's just a dust bowl,

so it makes for a long day
when you're chewing on dust.

To hit pay

and run it all before
the end of the season,

Rick's crew must haul at least
230 truckloads of overburden daily.

Despite the heat right now,

everybody is doing a really good job.

To be as efficient as possible,

Rick's sending the
full truckloads downhill

to dump the overburden,

while empty trucks make the uphill run,

cutting fuel costs.

We'd actually like to come in here

and not spend very much money.

The less we spend, the better it is.

It makes a good, efficient operation.

We're trying to keep the
roads as good as we can,

but, I mean, they get pretty beat up.

We are pushing these
rock trucks pretty hard.

In Rick's Vegas valley cut

the operation is at a standstill.

The whole machine's just
gonna slide where it wants to.

We need this truck

of the box, I'm scraping the dirt out.

To set the 30-ton
truck back on its wheels,

Rick uses the 460 excavator,

pushing from the back of the box

to avoid damaging the
hydraulic lift cylinders.

We got lucky.

I mean, we lost a little bit of

Well, back to stripping Vegas valley.

We've still got a long ways to go.

It's gonna take everything we've got.

It's good to finally be sluicing.

It's been a long time coming,

but at least now we're loosening.

100 miles away, Kevin
beets, first-year mine boss

and eldest son of "king
of the klondike" Tony

has finally hit gold.

I have had no reservations

that I was going to succeed and do this

because I've been doing this
for 20 years at Tony's camp.

The only difference since last year

is that it's now all my money.

Kevin's invested nearly
$2 million of his life savings

to get his mine up and running,

but so far he's produced just 33 ounces

of his 1,000-ounce target.

But the rookie mine boss has a plan

to double his weekly gold hauls.

We're gonna have to run night shift

if we wanna get 1,000 ounces this year.

So we're gonna kick that off tonight.

And if night shift goes well,

then we're running double the hours,

so that should mean double the gold.

Fingers crossed.

So, all that's gonna matter getting
all the hours on the wash plant

as we possibly can to hit our target.

To keep the plant sluicing
at 150 yards an hour,

Kayden has to feed
pay dirt into the hopper

and clear the tailings
every eight minutes.

It's a little stressful.

You can't see for half of
your shift with how dark it is.

And I'm all by myself,

I don't have anyone to help me
make certain decisions or anything.

And there's lots of wildlife out here,

so you just gotta keep
your head on a swivel

and make sure that you stay safe

because, if something happens
to you out here on nights,

no one will find you until the morning.

dirt piling up in the hopper.

happening, honestly.

I've known the belt has had a
couple of cracks in it for a while now,

and it finally went.

So, we have a project on our hands.

loader as a makeshift grater

to flatten the dirt road.

And nobody wants to bounce
off the ceiling 12 hours a day.

Plus, I don't like to see my
equipment torn up and I gotta repair it.

Really loud noise that shouldn't be there.

I got a loud noise coming from this truck.

It's kind of when it shifted,

it's making a big clunk.

First thing I noticed,

we got a bunch of the
drop box axle oil coming out.

The whole thing is...

Completely soaked in there.

This is going to make a mess. I feel it.

To figure out the problem,

Ryan will test the oil in the drop box,

which transmits engine power

to the six wheels of the all-terrain truck.

All right, now we are draining

the fluids out of the drop box.

That is ugly.

It's not a very good color.

Let me pull this plug out.

Pretty damn good-sized piece there.

This is nasty.

What are we looking at?

We are looking at a hurt drop box.

A drop box, that's a big job.

It's a big problem.

The 34-ton rock truck

has a drop box

located between the
engine and the drive axles

that sends power

to all six of the machine's wheels.

Metal fragments have
shorn off inside the box,

causing the gears to fail beyond repair.

Ryan will perform a precision maneuver

with a crane, threading its boom

through the door of the truck's cab.

Then lowering its block
and line through its floor

so it can be attached to
the 800-pound drop box.

Take its weight

and then lower it down to the ground

to remove it safely.

Finally, a new drop box
will then be moved in,

craned up,

and bolted into place to complete the fix.

Right there.

To help fit Rick's new $35,000 drop box,

Ryan's called in crane
operator Ryan brown.

Right now, Ryan's trying
to get the crane lined up,

'cause you've only got
a certain amount of room

to get into this hole right here.

So pretty tight fit.
