- I'm gonna tell you a story.

It's about an unspeakable crime.

It's about terrible cruelty.

It's about a fight for justice.

It's a story you might find hard to believe.

But this story is true, and it happened to me.

- ♪ My blood runs cold

- I was told that Matthew died in an accident.

- I can't imagine sitting with the kind of mystery

of what happened with your baby brother

for a lifetime.

- That is your own living hell.

- This was a once-in-a-lifetime case.

- Unimaginable trauma.

- She was the keeper of secrets.

- You would hear the yelling and the screaming.

- My parents looked at me like a deer in headlights.

- Tracy begins to realize they were hiding something.

- We had prosecuted some cold cases.

This was the coldest. This was frigid.

- There are so many twists and turns.

- To me, it felt like the case had started right there.

- We all have to confront our demons.

- We were amazed at what we saw.

- No matter what your beliefs are,

you've gotta believe that God knew the truth.

- It absolutely blew us away.

- Something doesn't wash here.

- I don't think that I have done anything wrong.

- That really bothered me.

- I was fearless.

- Medical records said that I had killed my baby brother.

I--I don't unders-- I don't understand.

- All my life, I knew there was something wrong

with Matthew's death,

but I was not prepared to learn the truth.

- ♪ My blood runs cold

- My memory works like a Polaroid.

I have snapshots of things, and they're so vivid,

I could draw them.

But that is not always a good thing.

My first memory is the day that Matthew died.

- No, actually, I--

it--it's--it's very odd to think

your whole life is wrapped around somebody

you can't remember, but no.

Well, let's go back.

I have all these baby pictures.

Yeah, so me, 1970,

just a baby, before Matthew.

My brother, Matthew, was born August 9, 1971.

And four months later, December 27th, he died.

Very shortly after Matthew died.

I mean, I was four days away from my second birthday, so--

so I was not yet two.

There's not very many pictures of Matthew.

I am a generally happy person.

I try to stay on the positive side.

Me, the kids.

Me and my grandchildren.

I'm a mimi, not a grandmother.

I also recognize at this point in life

that you can definitely be conditioned

to not show unhappiness,

because if you are showing unhappiness,

people ask questions, so.

- I got involved with Tracyraquel in 1997.

I covered all kinds of stories

for local and national publications

and was really intrigued by the backstory

and everything that she had been through

to really doggedly pursue the truth.

Tracy grew up in the 1970s in Atlanta,

in a suburban part of town, in the north end of town,

DeKalb County.

- We always joked that we lived in the hood.

You know, a lot of the kids in our community

that went to our school lived in big, fancy houses,

and we lived in apartments.

- I didn't live anywhere long enough

to be anywhere until I was, I think,

a sophomore in high school.

There are benefits to that because if you change schools

four times a year, every year, you get to do

all the field trips again.

But otherwise, no.

I wouldn't say there was a childhood home, just a place.

This is a picture of me being a goofy cheerleader

at 11, 12 years old.

It's kind of my personality.

I love sports.

I'm very competitive, and I'm ridiculously girly.

So a skirt and pom poms was not very far of a stretch.

And if there was some gymnastics and some stunting,

I'm right there.

It's the '80s, so braces and blue eyeliner.

It's really bad.

But yeah, I guess it's cute.

- Tracy was always very responsible, independent,

very respectful of her mom and other adults.

I do remember thinking of her as an old soul.

- What are cheerleaders but they're happy, peppy people

who tell everybody to get happy and cheer somebody on?

So I think there's probably some subconscious

symbolism in that.

- Tracyraquel's parents are Kathie Almon and Jan Sandlin.

They were both born in 1950

and met pretty early on at age 12.

- Kathie dated Jan all through high school,

but not publicly.

- Jan was sort of a big man on campus.

He was a very mischievous, domineering sort of person.

And Kathie, she found him charming.

He had a lot of the girls after him,

and she was one of them.

- But Kathie got pregnant at 15,

and she was forbid to see him.

Things were different.

You know, it was 1965, and that was not acceptable.

And her mother told her that

someone was gonna come and just check to make sure

that the baby and the pregnancy was okay.

And the woman actually came to do an illegal abortion

at the time.

So I think that that probably solidified whatever heartbreak

between the two of them.

- Somehow, she was still, you know, very drawn to him

really early in her life.

- After all of that, she dated publicly this really nice boy,

Ted Golder.

And then when he was drafted,

she found out she was pregnant with me.

And so they got married.

- Kathie, even while she was in a relationship with Ted,

was sort of drawn back, like the moth to the flame, to Jan.

- Ted went off to war, and Kathie sent him

a Dear John letter while he was deployed over in Vietnam

saying, you know what?

This is--this is not your child.

I don't love you. It's Jan's child.

I'm in love with him.

Eventually, Kathie got pregnant

with my brother, Matthew.

And Jan literally moved in with Kathie

and Matthew and I right after that.

She just was head over heels in love with him.

The day that Matthew died.

At the time, I didn't understand what all the lights

and sirens are, and I don't really have a memory

of an emotional state at that point.

Just asking what they were doing.

And my parents just kind of looked at me

like a deer in headlights.

- The day that Matthew died, Jan and Mathew

were left alone in the apartment.

Matthew would have been sleeping.

Kathie and Tracy had been out running some errands.

And then when they returned home...

- Mr. Sandlin greeted them at the door

and told Kathie that there was laundry downstairs

that needed to be brought up to the apartment.

- Jan took Tracy into the apartment.

And when Kathie came back...

- She went in like any mother wanting to go in

and check on the child.

- They go back there in the bedroom.

And the child, the infant, Matthew Golder,

is unresponsive.

- They then went directly to the hospital.

- They transported the child to Northside Hospital

with injuries to the head,

because that's where the child was born.

But Northside did not have neurology on staff,

especially for pediatrics, so they transported him

immediately in an ambulance to DeKalb Medical Center.

- I remember being in the car,

standing, holding the headrest,

and ambulances all around.

- Matthew was taken into surgery pretty quickly

after he got to the hospital.

And then the neurosurgeon came out

and said that while he was still alive,

his prognosis was quite bleak,

and that he probably wasn't going to live.

- Subsequently, he died there at the hospital.

- So that's my-- that's my first memory.

- At the time that Matthew died,

there was an elected coroner system

instead of a forensic medical examiner system.

And so the determinations of that elected coroner

was that it was an accidental death.

- Kathie said after the day that Matthew died,

it's been torture for me ever since.

Sort of from that point on, it was a big blur.

- A couple of months after Matthew died--

so I would have just turned two...

My mother, she took me out and sat me

on this second story balcony.

I did not understand what was happening.

And I remember Kathie...

She climbed up on the thing and jumped.

- I suspect Kathie was dealing with an awful lot,

grieving the loss of her infant son

and very sad about everything that had happened.

She had a lot of pain.

- She didn't die.

She broke both legs and both arms.

Yeah, it was a--

it was a tough time.

I remember days later and she was on the couch

in this full-body cast,

and she was yelling at me,

telling me how to scramble eggs.

Can you imagine scrambling eggs at two?

Yeah.

Those are moments of grief.

Kathie was terribly unhappy.

I know that--that she suffered a whole lot.

Maybe she just didn't know how to function anymore.

That's me and my gramps.

And my gramps took me and tried to keep me out of harm's way,

but he couldn't do that.

Just, the law didn't allow that, so.

- In December 1971, my children and I

lived in an apartment complex.

And lo and behold, in the apartments to the left of ours

was Kathie, Jan, and Tracy.

- I was three or four years old.

There was this huge domestic situation that was going on.

And I was sitting outside, alone by myself.

So my parents were screaming bloody murder.

- You would hear the yelling and the screaming

coming out from the apartment.

- I mean, I'm terrified.

And there were people walking on the sidewalk

across the street who were looking

and obviously taking notice like, wow, that's really bad.

But nobody did anything.

They just walked on.

- Looking at a difference between now and then,

frankly, most people would not have gotten involved

in cases like this, but the world was very

different in the early 1970s.

- I just felt like I wasn't important.

Oh, unless you needed me to do something,

which I was always very capable of doing.

- Over the years after Matthew's death,

things could get pretty dire between Kathie and Jan.

- So Tracy played the role of a parent.

She was the runner of the house.

- I was cooking at three years old.

I was paying bills at five, buying cigarettes and beer.

- And then when Tracy is about four or five,

her brother Jason is born.

- Jason is Jan and Kathie's son.

I don't know if it's just how it was back then

or if it's just how it was for me,

but I was always his caretaker.

I had to take care of him.

- She made sure that her brother, Jason,

was gotten off the bus, did his homework.

She made the meals, cleaned up afterwards.

And with her mom--

I remember her having to check on her mom a lot.

- No child should have to be dealing with that.

- Matthew's death was a deep blow to Kathie and Tracy,

just in different ways.

- I was always told that Matthew died in an accident.

And it was crib death, that Matthew fell out of the bed,

that he slipped between the mattress and the bars

and suffocated.

That was the general story amongst everyone in my family.

And no one really talked about it.

- Back in those days, there was a coroner.

There was not a medical examiner.

The coroner had classified the death as an accident.

- And then one day, I was in the car with Kathie,

and she said, you know, Matthew's birthday is gonna be

day after tomorrow or something.

But for some reason, I said,

if you don't take me to see his grave,

I'm never speaking to you again.

I don't know why I said that, honestly.

Her reaction was shocked.

And we went back home as we were maybe a block away.

And she told Jan, and he beat me with a belt.

Some people think we all got whuppings

with belts back in the day, but it wasn't like that.

This was--

No, it wasn't discipline.

It was "don't ever talk about this again."

He punished me...

in the name of Matthew.

- You don't know what's happening to you

when you're young, but you know,

I look back on that now, and that just blows my mind.

- On the surface, Tracy is growing up

to be a beautiful girl.

She's a cheerleader, has friends.

- Tracy was one of those friends who never

realized her true beauty.

We cheered together for a few years,

and she was just so vivacious.

But there was always a little bit of anxiety

and sadness to her.

- You might never have known how troubled she was.

- Until I was ten,

Jan was very much a part of Kathie's life.

- Jan and Kathie, they would be together for some time,

and then they would flit away, see other people.

But they always seemed to be drawn back to each other.

Sometimes Jan would be very romantic and bring her flowers

and make her feel like, you know,

she was the most important woman in the world.

And then they would have heated arguments.

And they seemed to repeat that cycle for--for years.

- Tracy's mom was, um, a tricky one.

I just remember her being very easy to anger,

but also very despondent a lot of times.

I know Tracy felt like she was walking on eggshells a lot,

and, um, I felt a vibe that was definitely a little dark.

- Now, I don't know if-- if she was more unhappy

when Jan was gone, but Kathie and I butted heads.

We didn't get along.

- Together, there was tension.

And this issue of Matthew always hung there,

whether it was spoken or unspoken.

Kathie, she's deeply troubled for many years.

- I think she was miserable.

And she was emotionally abusive and neglectful, in my opinion.

I was in the first grade and, um, fell asleep with gum,

got gum in my hair.

Kathie's answer to that was just to shave my head...

And then send me to school.

When you think about that--

like, I can't imagine doing that to my child.

- You know, I never saw any kind of maternal gestures

towards Tracy.

I never saw comfort if Tracy was sad.

I never saw encouragement for her.

I definitely felt like she did everything she could,

and it was never enough to get that kind of attention

from her mom.

- When Tracy was a teenager and, you know,

going through a lot of the things that all teens do,

she also had layered in this sort of deep sorrow

about her family.

- I was raised in the South.

You're supposed to smile and nod

and tell everybody that you're having a great day.

We don't wanna burden anyone.

- But looking back now,

there was definitely something deeper

brimming under the surface.

- I was the most unhappy child at 13, 14 years old.

And...

- She tried to have me hospitalized.

Kathie woke me in the middle of the night

and took me to a state hospital.

I think she was just trying to get rid of me.

I spent 48 hours there.

They were sick kids.

They were violent criminals.

It was a very scary,

terrifying place, and... [sniffles]

I didn't understand what was happening.

[sniffles] It was my--my Aunt June who came and said,

this is not gonna work and this is wrong,

and took me back home.

And then, on top of that, oh, by the way,

I was always trying to figure out what happened to Matthew.

And then, also, I had severe headaches, severe nightmares.

And they did all these tests.

And it turned out that I had a--

a seizure disorder.

And so they put me on a medication for it.

Quite honestly, at that point, I was suicidal.

I didn't wanna live, and I certainly didn't

wanna live in that house.

- And honestly, I thought I'd be with Matthew.

- So I started saving medication to OD.

- And--and I just took it all at once.

- You're really just thinking, how do I--

how do I get out of this?

It was a sad day.

I probably should have died, according to what they said.

That just breaks my heart.

- I woke up to Kathie standing over me,

shaking my face and saying,

oh, my God, what have you done now?

And all I could think was, wow, I'm really still here?

I was definitely at a breaking point.

But rather than just looking at my own abuse and suffering,

I took on this whole full thing of,

I'm gonna find out what happened to Matthew.

I was always just trying to understand how he died,

what was his cause of death.

And I would ask questions from everybody in my family

until they would be like, okay, enough.

Enough.

There was a lot of pushback.

- This is one of the biggest events in our family,

and we don't talk about it?

They would shut her down and tell her, don't go there.

But she also begins to realize that her mother

is hiding something.

So she has another go-round with her mother to try to probe

and find out what happened to Matthew.

- She wouldn't say any details, with the exception of,

when Matthew died, he suffered a head injury.

- As she's really probing and pushing her mother,

things get ratcheted up to a point where,

you know, Kathie blurts out...

- At the hospital, the surgeon came out and said,

the injury to his head was as if you took your fist

and put it through a watermelon.

I'll never forget that.

- As a mother, I can't even imagine hearing

what the surgeon came out and said.

It's so horrible, and it's shocking.

But that was a turning point.

Then it just really opened this whole thing

where, what happened to him?

Why didn't anybody do anything?

Why is there no investigation?

Why did we not look into this?

- I can't imagine sitting with the kind of mystery

of what happened with your baby brother for a lifetime.

- So when I was 15, I went down

to DeKalb County Police Department,

and they came out and gave me an incident report.

And it said that the police officer

had arrived on the scene.

And what happened?

Well, he's got a head injury, the ambulance is coming.

And they were transferring him from one hospital to another.

And that's all.

And there was no investigation.

Nobody had ever done anything

because it was an accident, supposedly.

That just didn't make any kind of sense to me.

But unfortunately, nobody was listening

to what I have to say.

- But that's when I started noticing a change with Tracy,

and I didn't see her as often.

I just thought Tracy was growing up

and changing, getting deeper.

- I didn't know what I wanted to do.

I didn't know who I was.

But I needed to get out.

I lived with Kathie until I was 18 or 19.

And I think at some point, she just--

nothing changed.

Nothing changed with her.

- When you live in an environment of trauma--

she was just ready to escape.

- And then I decided I was finished with Kathie

and moved on.

And I moved out on my own, worked four jobs,

and, you know, just trying to be away.

And then I joined the army.

I thought, I'm gonna go in the army,

I'm gonna jump out of airplanes,

I'm gonna go to Ranger School,

and I'm gonna learn all these skills

that are gonna make me super, you know--

super tough, and no one can ever hurt me.

- She is shoulder to shoulder with the men.

And the rigor of the training, all of the discipline,

all of the physical challenges, really kind of turn her on.

- I was stationed overseas.

So I was learning who I was.

You know, I had a little bit more confidence.

Got married. I decided to have children.

- And becoming a mother had a big effect on her.

They light a fire under her to really

pursue more of the deep background

on what happened to Matthew.

So this begins her quest into looking for

as much information as she can get.

- And for the first time since the age of 15,

it occurred to me that, well, I can request medical records.

I can--I can request death records, you know.

And so I did.

- When she gets the medical records back from the hospital,

that's the big moment.

- That's when the world kind of caved in around me.

I wasn't prepared for what they said.

First, there was the skull fractures,

which led to his death.

But then it got to where the surgeon and the doctors

asked what happened.

It stated, the mother states that...

the baby sister threw him out of the bed.

I had killed my baby brother.

The realization that I killed Matthew,

I just didn't see that coming.

And all I could think was,

I--I don't unders-- I don't understand.

You have to say, wait a minute, did I black out?

Is there any kind of possibility

that I could have done this, that I had killed Matthew?

So I called my grandmother first, and I--

I asked her, do you know this?

And she said, very matter of fact--

not in a cruel way--but she said, honey, yes, we know this.

Everybody knows this.

It's--it's-- we've always known that.

Once I got Kathie on the phone, well, she said,

well, you know, it was an accident.

You picked him up, and you dropped him.

Is this the horrible secret that's been going on?

- From what I remember originally,

on the date Matt died,

Kathie had come home with Tracy and came upstairs

and went to see how Matt was.

Jan told her he's sleeping. Everything's good.

And so why don't you go downstairs

and get the laundry from the car?

And so she did, and when she came back upstairs,

Tracy was no longer sitting in the chair.

And when she ran to find Tracy,

she was playing in the crib,

and Matt was on the floor gasping for air.

And at that time, Jan told her it must have been an accident.

Tracy must have thrown Matt out of the crib.

And that's what we understood was the first version

of what may have happened to Matt.

Imagine all you know is that you had a brother.

The brother died when he was four months.

You've heard a variety of reasons for several years

and ultimately being told you were responsible for it,

that you killed him.

- It just blows my mind.

And of course, I was sad and betrayed.

And I didn't understand.

And I was angry.

And I just didn't-- [sighs]

I mean, honestly, it just didn't make any sense.

So I really needed the answer myself.

But also, I--I just didn't believe it.

I just didn't believe that it was possible.

- She wasn't big enough.

She wasn't old enough.

She couldn't have done that.

I had children the same--you know, right at the same ages.

They couldn't pick each other up.

But everyone was saying she had done that.

The police were at the apartments.

And I made that statement, and I said,

that kid couldn't do that.

It's not humanly possible.

And they said, no, she picked the baby up,

and the rail wasn't down,

and thrown the baby out of the bed.

And it didn't make sense to me.

But you went with it, and you just said,

well, I can't see how that's possible,

but you're the police.

You know more than we do.

- And basically, what the DeKalb Police Department

told her was that it had been ruled as an accidental death,

and she didn't do it on purpose.

It was not a crime.

- Years later, I was living in Savannah.

And my daughter, Goldie, was 18 months old,

getting close to two.

Goldie's birthday is one day before mine,

so it's pretty relative.

We had brought groceries in,

and there was a gallon of milk sitting in front of the door,

and she was trying to lift this gallon of milk

to get it in the kitchen.

And she could not even drag it.

A gallon of milk weighs eight or nine pounds.

And at four months old,

Matthew weighed almost double that.

So how was it that I, at two years old,

picked this four-month-old infant up,

lifted him over the side of a crib,

and threw him onto the floor?

Rationally speaking, if something doesn't add up,

then it--it just doesn't.

I just couldn't get it out of my head.

- Looking at that makes her realize

that something doesn't wash here.

- It's like a light went on.

But if I didn't do it, who did?

I think in my mind, everything just expedited.

I called DeKalb County Police Department.

I called the FBI. They didn't have time.

You know, it's a cold case. It's an old case.

There's no evidence, and there's no hope.

I worked harder, made more calls,

reached out to more people.

I wasn't gonna stop.

It was about doing the right thing

and--and finding the truth.

I called the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office.

And I got an investigator for them who was retired Homicide

from DeKalb County, Jim Mabe.

- Tracy's case was 20-some-plus years old.

And you may ask yourself, well, why--

why would I take it?

First of all, she wasn't interested in money, fame,

or fortune, or anything like that.

She was simply wanting to know the truth about what happened.

Well, one of the mottos that we have

in the medical examiner's office,

it isn't justice that we seek.

It's truth, so justice can be served.

That was one reason I took it.

The other reason, her father was Jan Barry Sandlin.

The truth was, that shocked me.

- Before I came to the medical examiner's office,

I'd been assigned a cold case file

where a police officer had been killed.

Officer Corn was shot multiple times

with his own handgun in an apartment complex

that he was working security.

And one of the people that I came across who became

a person of interest in that police officer death

was Jan Sandlin.

I couldn't believe it. That was her dad.

- Well, for me, it was just like, what?

- It was back in the '70s.

We were asked by the colonel

who heads up the Criminal Investigation Division

to look into it.

There were so many avenues to go down.

And when we got to Jan Sandlin,

he was never charged because there was never

enough evidence to even get a warrant for Jan.

- Jan Barry Sandlin was ostensibly connected

with the Dixie Mafia.

They were known for stealing cars

and running drugs throughout the South.

When law enforcement started investigating them,

they became very vicious.

The district attorney in Jackson County, Georgia,

who was investigating them, was blown up in his car.

Our investigation showed Mr. Sandlin

had ties with the Dixie Mafia

and been involved in other crimes as well.

- I was best friends with Jan Berry Sandlin's

first wife, Nancy Tegeder.

And before Jan was married to Kathie,

Jan went out with Nancy.

And she was pregnant.

- It was alleged Jan Sandlin was not the father.

And in September of 1971, Dan's first wife died

of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

It was ruled a suicide.

Of all the cases that I've worked,

which is over 5,000 cases--

I've had them overdose, hang themselves--

I've never had a woman shoot herself in the abdomen,

especially pregnant.

- But, by the way, it's the same coroner

at the time who said Matthew's was an accidental death, so.

- Maybe a week or a couple weeks later

after Nancy's death, Jan moves in with Kathie Almon.

And then a couple months later, Matthew died.

- In a matter of six months, three people died.

- And then the police came one day.

He had been arrested in Florida on multiple charges.

- Jan is convicted of armed robbery, gets a life sentence,

and for all intents and purposes,

is out of their lives.

- As a human being, I think you have a moment

where you have to ask the question,

is it possible Matthew's death wasn't an accident?

- So I started to look into Matthew's death.

It was intriguing enough and brought up enough red flags

to at least look into the case.

So I took it to Dr. Joe Burton,

who, at that time, was the chief medical examiner

for DeKalb County, Georgia,

and showed him all that we had and said,

can we investigate this?

He said, absolutely.

- Dr. Burton came to my office with Jim Mabe

to talk about the case.

Most cases start with a Homicide unit

of the police department,

and then the medical investigator,

along with the medical examiner,

determines cause of death.

And together, they come see the district attorney.

It is very rare for the medical examiner,

on his or her own, to come see us and say,

you need to take a hard look at this case.

- When I was first asked to become involved in this case,

medical records were obtained from the day

that Matthew had become fatally injured,

and Dr. Burton asked me to independently

develop an opinion on what I think may have happened

and what I think did not happen.

- I remember Dr. Burton's exact words.

There's no way in hell that this child died

from being pushed out of a crib.

- And that's when those wheels began to turn.

- I first met Tracy at our office.

She was quite the fighter and didn't take no for an answer.

While we had prosecuted some cold cases,

this was the coldest.

This was frigid.

- If I'm being honest, it was a case

that I knew was going to have challenges,

that there were lots of technical and legal issues

with something that was so old.

There were also some real practical issues

of what kind of evidence would exist.

- We just knew that 4 1/2 month-olds,

they do fall out of cribs, and, sometimes,

even that young where the bones have not calcified,

you may get a hair fracture of the skull.

You don't get death.

Unless there was some underlying cause,

I kept pushing them, saying that there could be

other reasons that this child died

that we don't know about and we cannot know about

without an autopsy.

There was no autopsy report.

- Because his death had been ruled an accident,

we knew we had possession of the medical records,

and we knew what the findings were.

And we knew that there was a skull fracture.

And we knew collectively that that couldn't have been

caused by Matt or his sister.

- It would be extremely unusual for a child

to have been essentially dropped

no more than about 4 feet-- and probably less than that--

without having been propelled in some fashion

in order to receive the injuries he has.

A two-year-old would not have been able to add any momentum

to his flight through the air.

That force was tremendous.

- Then the next question was, who'd done it?

And there were only two people possible.

It was Jan Barry Sandlin and Kathie Almon.

So whodunit is usually what happens

in most criminal trials.

But here we had to overcome the scientific burden

that there was a child who died from maltreatment.

- And if we were able to perform an autopsy,

then Dr. Burton could corroborate

the physical findings found by the incredibly qualified

medical team at the hospital.

We were committed to figure out

and to prove what happened.

And the way we thought about it, as I remember, was,

this was 20-some years ago.

I don't care how old of a case it is.

You had a four-month-old who was begging

for someone to do justice.

So we looked around the room,

and it's like, this is a no-brainer.

Let's go exhume the body.

- No one, to their knowledge, had ever heard

of an exhumation of a child

that had been underground for 25 years.

- It seemed to me that we were disturbing a sleeping baby.

And that really bothered me.

- For 15 years, she's carried the burden

that she was responsible for that child's death.

- I wasn't prepared.

It was really hard.
