There is an entire generation
growing up,

that believes that what you see
in hardcore pornography

is the way that you have sex.

Narrator: This is Cindy Gallop.

Her 2009 TED Talk warned of the
worrying cultural effect porn

is now having on young people.

It went viral.

I date younger men,

predominantly men in their 20s.

and when I date younger men,

I have sex with younger men.

And when I have sex
with younger men,

I encounter very directly
and personally,

the real ramifications
of the creeping ubiquity

of hardcore pornography
in our culture.

I have no problem responding as
I have regularly had to,

"Actually no, thank you
very much,

"I'd much rather you
did not cum on my face."

Narrator: In the 10 years since
Cindy gave her talk,

porn use has rocketed.

By 2012, YouPorn, just one porn
site amongst hundreds,

received more internet traffic
every second

than the average UK household
would generate in six months.

But there's been a revolution in
the way people view porn too.

Smartphones mean we can
access porn on the go,

so now we're watching
it in public.

Last year,
coffee chain Starbucks,

decided it would have to block
porn from its Wi-Fi...

..and it seems
everyone's been at it.

The internet network
in Parliament

recently recorded 160 requests
a day to watch porn.

But it's the generation
that's grown up with porn

at its fingertips that use
it most.

18 to 34-year-olds make up

nearly two-thirds of
Pornhub's visitors.

But what the stats
don't tell us

is how many people under 18 are
looking at porn.

Producer: Have you talked about
this before?

I've never talked
about it before.

So this will be my first time.

Sometimes it's left up to people
such as myself

to try and bite the bullet
and tackle issues like that.

It is a difficult topic,
but we shall see.

So we are talking about porn
today, guys.

So, when you do see this big
bright word saying 'porn',

what's your initial
thought that come to your mind?

- Sexual intercourse.
- Sexual intercourse, sex,

- Sex.
- Sex.

- A traumatising experience.

and cringe.

- The first thing that comes
into my head, yeah,

when I saw that was

Yeah, quite a lot.

And then there'll be some quite

How can it be, you know,

or something, you just think,

to talk about

all of these sexual sort
of terminologies,

and it frightens
the everyday person.

determined to make people
face the realities

of how porn may now be
influencing us.

whose been fighting
all of her life,

and she cares deeply about the
society in which we live,

so it's great, Cindy,

and porn.

Because we don't talk about sex
as a society,

we are enormously nervous and
insecure about it as a result.

Everybody wants to be
"good in bed",

no-one knows exactly
what that means,

and so you will seize your cues
on how to do that

from anywhere you can and if the
only cues you've seen

are in porn, those are the ones
you're going to take.

I always emphasise the issue
isn't porn -

the issue is that we don't talk
about sex in the real world.

People don't get how
massively, profoundly,

fundamentally beneficial the
impact of that would be.

- Some parents don't want
their children

to be having
these conversations.

- But what do you think the fear
is of parents

just about you guys
talking about

what is actually out there?

That you're exposed to
that kind of stuff.

- Could you talk to your
parents about porn?

- No.
- Never! Could never.

You could never do that.

So that's already
a barrier there.

So why can't you guys talk about
porn with your parents?

It's an intimate kind of thing,

like you don't really,

like I wouldn't say it to my
friends, "oh I watch porn",

like I just wouldn't say it
like that.

- Yeah, because you find it
very personal.

Yeah, it's a personal thing.

- 'Cause our parents always
think that we're innocent,

'cause to them we're
still babies

so they don't know that
we learn from society

what these things are.

Producer: What was your like
sex education like in school?

- I didn't have one.
- Did you not?

Really?

Not that I can remember fully.

I remember we learnt about it
in science, that was it.

- Really?
- Yeah.

Because I went to an all-girls
school that was Catholic, so...

- Oh, yeah.

Producer: There's an idea that
porn has become sex education

for a whole generation.
What do you think about that?

I remember when we was doing sex
education in class

like in my third of fourth year
of secondary school,

and they were explaining
something to us,

I can't remember what it was,

but then one of the boys
shouted out,

"That's not what I saw
on Pornhub."

It's like,
oh, that's entertainment,

that's not real life.

It's made up, but he just
couldn't understand that,

he genuinely thought
Pornhub was real

'cause his parents had never
spoken to him

about like, what sex is, what it
is, and all stuff like that,

so he kind of just always
had this idea

from what he'd seen online.

Sexuality was never brought up.

Never.

So, I mean, me being gay,
it was...

..that became pretty difficult

because I never learnt about it,

I had to sort of figure things
out for myself

and I was never educated on
certain things.

I had to go and find it myself.

then you would, you'll Google it

and you'll find things
such as porn.

Yeah.

Narrator: Whilst we've not been
talking about porn,

more and more of it is
made every day,

with DIY producers like Jason
popping up all over the world.

- I know somebody who's making
$90,000 a month in sales,

$90,000 a month.

But actually, in life,
when you try to put

happiness or something like
that on a dollar,

like a dollar amount,
that's foolish, you know.

I was going to have to
come up with something

that at least had
the potential one day

to be just as mass,
just as mainstream

and just as all-pervasive in our
society as porn currently is.

porn's negative influence,

Cindy decided to
create a new platform

for ordinary people to post

- My tiny team and I launched
a video-sharing platform

that celebrates real world sex.

So anyone from anywhere in
the world can submit to us.

are not about
performing for the camera.

Capture what goes on
in the real world,

unless it's real.

Obviously, I think the initial
attraction is always there.

what we think people have
gone into doing

social narratives around sex

is quite
extraordinarily difficult.

been doing it?

is it simply because we don't
want to talk about it,

it's too awkward?

to speak to them about

Yeah, so I wrote an open letter
to David Cameron

about precisely this issue

and the headline was, you know,

"David Cameron,
don't block porn, disrupt it".

And what I said in that letter,
the issue isn't porn,

the issue is that we don't talk
about sex in the real world.

The answer then that
worries me about porn

is not to shut down, censor,
clamp down, block, repress,

it is instead to open up.

Open up the dialogue around all
of this, like I'm trying to do

because when you do that,

you completely change
the landscape of "adult".

the growing fear around

..has led to plans for a new law

which will block kids
from watching it.

It would mean that
if you visit a porn site,

you have to prove you're 18
using credit card info

or a driving licence
to verify your age.

- Our government are looking at
putting in a porn block,

do you think that's a
good thing or a bad thing?

If you're under 18,
to have a porn block?

- A lot of people know how to
get around that stuff.

People will still find ways.

- 'Cause it's all about
social media.

You get all of these
pornographies,

and all these sexual things
through social media

and through Snapchat, through
Instagram, through Twitter.

So in essence, you're saying
that if they put a ban it,

it's not going to matter anyway.

- People will still find ways.

So it's not going to work, it's
actually not going to work.

- There's no direct push
from government

to have to explore
these topics.

If there was a need for a law
to be in place

for there to be an age block,

that means there was an issue.

And that means the issue has
been long going on

that hasn't been tackled.

And so therefore somebody's
missed a beat with that one.

will see age verification

as a good thing 'cause now they
won't have to talk

to their kids about porn?

That is exactly
the fucking problem.

No, society cannot abdicate
