Retailers typically feed your purchase history

into a recommendation algorithm.

So if you just bought a bottle of suntan lotion,

they might try and sell you

Porn is no different.

The masses of customer data collected by the free sites

is also fed back to producers.

So they can make more of what is popular.

And that can be surprising.

So with millions of eyeballs on Internet porn every day.

It makes you wonder,

who's really making the choice about what porn we watch?

It's probably got to the point

where literally spending an hour or an hour and a half

to find that perfect video.

Because you've seen so many, you've seen them all

and it's now boring.

Man: It's hard to go without it.

It's like, for example,

sometimes when go on holiday,

you can't get porn on the phone

because some countries I've been in,

you just can't find anywhere.

- When you're in Korea, it's really difficult for you.

- 'Cause it's blocked.

But it is, if you're in Thailand

you can't access porn on your phone.

- Or over 18 if you're not connected.

Producer: So where do you think it becomes something

that you're in control of,

or porn on the Internet is sort of in control of you?

- I think it is in control of us.

is that everything we went through,

because we've come out of it and its freedom now

Rob's a recovering porn addict?

- Recovered.

but I would say recovered now.

- You know, I haven't watched pornography now

for as long as I can remember.

So I'd say that we are, I am recovered, not recovering.

Producer: What did it look like on a daily basis

when you are in the throes of porn addiction?

- So in it's worst, on a bad day,

it could be two or three hours of bingeing.

Feasting on this buffet of two minute videos

just constantly diving into it.

I was trying to stop at all times

because I really don't want to hurt her,

whether it's the man or the woman,

the other one does feel betrayed.

Producer: Did you feel betrayed, Lydia?

- Yeah. Because it's not me.

He's finding comfort in someone else.

Yeah.

Producer: Did it make you feel less?

- Yeah, it makes you feel like you're not enough.

I mean, it's hard

because obviously...

I've had three kids in quite a small space of time

and obviously that does affect you,

it changes your body, you change your emotions,

your hormones, everything,

so I felt like, it's partly my fault

because I wasn't giving him what he needed.

Producer: Rob, when you were at your most extreme

of watching porn,

would you ever try and make excuses

to find the time to go and watch it?

- I remember time where say,

I've been driving around quoting jobs for my business.

Producer: You're a painter, decorator?

- Yeah I run a decorating company.

And I would find myself coming home from that quote

and then kind of feeling that urge

and knowing Lydia will be home in about an hour

from the school run,

so if I get home quickly now,

I mean this is like a year-and-a-half ago,

but I would put my foot down to get home quickly

so I can have that time

and that freedom, if you like, to be able to just view porn

at my leisure

and feast on the opportunity of that pornography.

Producer: Do you think that some of the things

that you wanna do,

are influenced by what you see in porn?

- Yeah because you learn new things on porn.

So like, there'd be some stuff that obviously,

I wouldn't have a clue about,

and then I've seen like, a porn video

and I'm like, oh, that looks good.

Obviously that influences you to try different things.

- There's being forceful,

so like, for example, you might just see,

see a guy sort of, throw himself on a girl,

and she might like it, or he does stuff like,

controls her, sort of, in a really aggressive way.

I mean I like, when I'm watching porn,

I like slapping and obviously choking,

I think it's quite a norm.

I think it is quite a norm. It happens in porn all the time.

And I think girls pick up on it, as well,

and I think maybe because maybe girls watch porn,

you always see the girl enjoying it and liking it

so it's definitely something that's big.

Producer: Now we're out of the office,

what do you really think of the photos

that you're editing?

- They're fucking disgusting.

They are abhorrent.

And a lot of these photographs,

you can tell just by looking at a female performer's eyes,

who's enjoying it and who's not.

You can tell the ones that are empowered by it,

they're like, fuck yeah, this is my life,

this is, you know, I own this.

This is my body and I can do whatever I want with it,

and then there's other girls that unfortunately,

just, even some guys,

that look like, what the fuck am I doing here?

Or, I really need to pay rent.

I've always been a huge fan of pornography

all the way back to college.

Which was part of the reason why I was so intrigued

to work for Evil Angel and the porn industry

because I felt like it would be celebrating life.

I took these photographs a couple of years ago,

they were friend of a friend.

I just wanted to capture the authenticity

of their lovemaking.

It was very nice.

Probably sounds strange to most people

but it was very freeing

and then I thought, you know,

I can definitely see myself doing this for a living.

I never watched degrading porn.

I never sought that out,

I didn't really know it existed.

I knew it existed,

I just didn't know how bad it was.

That particular genre of porn,

tells today's youth

that sex is only to be enjoyed by the man.

He is supposed to cum in my face,

he's supposed to slap me,

and manhandle me

and this is how we should expect to be treated.

I don't think that this type of pornography

should be produced.

She left her hometown in Ohio to come to LA.

a normal day's work?

- Yeah that was a normal day's work.

your personal life?

- When I first got in the business.

It was like people who came to LA to be an actor

or this, that and, kind of got waylaid

and kinda fell into the business.

But now, with the advent of the Internet,

it's more you can see girls desire to be in porn,

that's their goal.

They research it, they watch it, they you know,

they're not falling into it, that is what they aspire to do.

For me I like to sit down and talk to them

and I wanna know like,

besides that they're business minded,

I want to know that they're perverts.

Because I want them to be doing this

because it's what they really like to do,

because they will last much longer.

But when I talk to them, yeah I'll do double vag,

I'll do ass to mouth,

I'll do DP, ATM,

I'll do, you know,

They say no, I just turned 18.

I really hated myself for the longest time

because like I wanted sex all the time.

And that was wrong.

Being in porn I just fit in,

and everyone else like, has the same like sexual desires

and urges that I have.

So it's kind of nice to be around that.

Narrator: It's almost as if porn has given Gia a way

to own her sexuality.

To reclaim it.

From the schoolkids who used to taunt her.

For now at least,

she's in a world where she feels accepted.

- Trying to think, I remember the first time.

- Do you?

- We watched porn but I remember

because the one's that you,

it was you that chose it.

- That French couple. - Yeah.

And it's a couple of basically...

- Really hot.

I just remember propping the phone up,

watching porn,

and then you were like...

- Yeah, I think it literally was,

- it was like on the pillow. - Yeah.

- You were on all fours. - On all fours.

- And I was kind of over-the-top behind

I got the view of the porn for both of us.

- Yeah. It was nice. - On a tiny little phone.

Narrator: For Freddie and Tracy, watching porn together

has been a big part of their relationship

since they met a year ago.

It's something they enjoy.

But porn can often be very secretive

and grow into something compulsive.

- So I have this on all my devices,

it's called 'Accountable To You'.

And it just looks like this icon here on my phone,

so I've got all my normal,

got Facebook on there, got me Chelsea app,

and then that, 'Accountable to You'

it's on my phone,

but Lydia's my accountability partner.

So, for example,

because if I was to type on any of my devices,

'porn' or even words like 'sex' or...

..even 'addiction', anything.

'Addiction', it would flag up a warning.

Producer: So does that ping on your phone then?

- Yeah.

Producer: And then do you look at it?

- Yeah.

So it will say like, questionable activity,

and that's on his phone.

So even like voice searches

if it can be questionable at all,

it will flag something up, and send me an email.

Producer: So, you obviously felt you needed that.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

Producer: What was that giving you by having that app?

- This program for me,

helped me so that,

I remember days in the recovery process

where I would want to watch porn and if I had access to porn,

without my wife finding out,

I probably would have turned to it,

I would have given in.

Not being able to get away with it

in that moment,

was kind of the final ability to say no.

Narrator: Rob would regularly spend two or three hours

looking for the perfect video.

While Lydia lay asleep up in bed.

But that perfect video didn't exist.

Because there is always one more to watch.

There's disagreement as to whether porn

should be classified as addictive.

What's not in doubt,

is that there are many like Rob

whose porn use has become compulsive.

- For me, personally,

pornography started when I was teenager.

I went through, I then got into a relationship,

where I continued to use pornography.

And it caused a lot of tension

she'd find images on my phone, you know, videos.

It broke her inside because she loved me.

And she wanted to be the only woman

that that I had saw, you know in that way.

- I remember porn that, you know,

you would see a certain porn and it would be so arousing,

you know, like they're all arousing,

but then there's that one video of some like,

whoa, that just ticked every single possible box.

Like that woman looked the way you want it,

that act, that everything.

And it's kind of like, years later,

that still,

I mean if I let myself now, I could go to those memories.

I don't because I have this thing in my head

I feel like the thought's like a dog on a lead,

and I keep that, if that thought tries to get off,

I'm like, yank that thought,

I don't let it go anywhere now.

- So do you think when you see a guy,

from that perspective and there's a girl,

do you think that guy is you, then?

- Well, yeah I'd say that's how you imagine it,

so if you're watching point of view porn,

you're imagining you're the person

who's in that situation.

- That's how I would do it. - Yeah.

So, you're thinking of having sex with other women

- when you're watching it? - No, of course not.

[laughs]

You're not thinking about it, but you're almost trying to,

you know, you're thinking...

- You're in that position.

- Yeah, like that's your scenario.

- I just think I'm watching other people having sex,

that's how I see porn.

- Yeah.

- As opposed to I'm in the porn.

I don't think that's my vagina.

- Yeah.

- But you think that's your cock when you're watching it.

- I guess you do.

You're not watching something

because you're wanting to sit outside of a situation

and just look in and watch it,

I would have thought everybody

trying to put themselves into that scenario.

As opposed to sit back out of it

and kind of watches it from the fence.

- Why is porn wrong? Why is it harmful?

I mean one of the things I feel, the biggest issue about it

is it completely separates sex and love.

And ultimately if you build something just on that,

it becomes very empty

and it becomes very shallow and unsatisfying,

and basically what porn is doing is selling people a lie

and a fantasy.

- For me, it got to a point where I'm looking at women

and all I'm seeing is, you know, boobs and bum,

that's all I'm seeing, I'm not seeing the person.

And that's what people are looking at, you know,

women are just objects now, now today.

- I've had partners before, you know, previous life,

and we've watched porn together

because that partner has said I want to,

or has agreed and said it's fine.

And then I even remember one particular person,

months later, major, major row

because, you know, like insecurities

really kicked into her.

Oh, you were thinking about porn when we were doing,

you know, just having sex then,

so although they're saying it's fine, couples,

it is definitely putting in somebody's insecurity,

I'm not enough.

- I'd always had like, I'd been around people

that would say,

I don't need to look at porn magazines,

because that's cheating.

Like they would say to their partners.

And I think, how is it cheating

when you're looking at other people,

like, you're not texting somebody

or seeing somebody or sleeping with somebody,

you are viewing other couples.

So to me, I really struggled

to see how women wouldn't allow their husbands to look at porn.

And I thought, that's really weird.

But now we've had like this revelation,

where he's like I'm thinking about fucking all these women.

- I'm not thinking about it. It's a subconscious feeling.

- You know, I didn't know you viewed it like that,

I thought you were just being a peeping Tom also,

watching a couple having sex,

not you thinking that woman's riding me.

Yeah, I never saw it as a cheating thing.

But actually if you are then fantasising about having sex

with multiple women,

that probably is something you shouldn't do.

- But it wouldn't be cheating,

unless something actually happened.

when you look at porn.

- So there's a hubris involved

with thinking that you know what's best for other people.

And I try and be careful

not to have too much of that in my life.

for poor people,

for the average person to get pleasure out of sex.
