- A lot of people see
me as an exotico leader,

as an exotico goddess,
that's why I'm called

the Liberace of Lucha Libre
and the exotico queen.

And all this stuff, but
I've been through a lot.

I've been stabbed.

I've been beat up.

I've been hurt, a lot
of doors shut in my face

because of my
sexual preferences,

because I've been an exotico,

because I was labeled
like gay, exotico.

But people didn't give me
the chance to see my work

inside the ring because, once
they saw me inside the ring,

they were like, wow.

This guy doesn't even
look like an exotico,

just because of his presence,

but he has more talent and
he's such a great wrestler

than anybody else.

And that's when I
was like, ah, see.

Now, you can see, but
give me a chance to prove

why I'm inside the ring.

It's not only
because I'm exotico

and I love to kiss my
opponents or whatever.

No, I'm in the ring because
I like to show my talent,

my skills.

I'm a very talented (speaking
in foreign language)

and that speaks in itself.

Right now, I have three
Championship belts in my waist

and I was the first exotico
to be a world champion

back in 1991.

(bright music)

- I don't know how
to sing very lovely,

but I do it from the heart.

This is where all
my doctors are.

And this is the hospital
where I'm gonna get

all my surgeries.

- I already did
three there, so...

are coming up will be there too.

That's New Mexico,
this is Texas.

That's Juarez, Mexico.

You see, two countries

and three states.
- Three states.

(horn honking)

- [Cassandro] All this
was prostitution, bars.

Nothing exists no more,
everything was thrown down.

I used to go in this
neighborhood that
doesn't exist no more

and get high right here.

All this.

They threw everything down.

This is the gym where
I started wrestling,

where I became a wrestler.

(dog barking)

Wrestling is very
important in Mexico,

it's part of a, it's like
a religion in Mexico.

It's a family
thing, so in Juarez,

after every Sunday,
there were shows

every Sundays and Thursdays.

So, after we go to Mass,
we went to Lucha Libre.

My first view of Lucha
Libre was in television

in the black and
white movies with

(speaking in foreign language)

And then, as time
passed, I started going

to the Lucha Libre shows
and it was just amazing.

It's like a free
therapy session.

You forget all the stuff
that happened to you at home

or in school and
all the problems

and it's a screaming game like
you tore out this language

and you took all your
stress and frustrations

out on the wrestlers.

So, I loved it.

And then, of course, me
being gay, I loved the men.

I was so intrigued
with them with their

(speaking in foreign language)

and their masks.

(horns honking)

I was like, ooh la-la.

So, I went there and
it was like, oh, nice.

Oh my god, but they
kicked my ass so bad.

Oh, they beat me up so bad.

I had fever and I had body aches

and there was still a lot of
homophobic going on and stuff,

but I didn't care.

It was the best thing that
could have ever happened to me.

It was one of my best
medications, Lucha Libre.

(horn honking)

(energetic music)

My hands.

Cut it here.

Those are all the
scars of my 27 years

of bottle hits,
bites, corner hits.

Left tibia fracture.

I had to have a plate
with eight pins.

And now I'm gonna
go and do ACL, PCL

and meniscus change.

Eight stitches in here.

Here.

So, that needs another surgery.

My new teeth.

I bought my teeth three times.

Five times, the
rotator cuff has moved.

So, I have a torn ligament
underneath my armpit.

I have a pop out.

I don't know, I have burns
in my back somewhere there.

And I have a lot of
nerve damage from my neck

to my arms to my waist.

And then I have a cut.

(crowd chanting)

(bell ringing)

- [Crowd] Cassandro!

- And I been a world
champion of UWA in 1991.

(train horn blaring)

It's hard to start my morning
because I'm in a lot of pain.

- [Woman] I'm sure, yeah.

- Right now, I don't want
to cry, I'm hurting so bad.

Let's see who's
cute and who's not.

Who's gonna be the
father of my baby?

(laughing)

- [Woman] You always
have your bear?

- This bear has been with me

since 2000.

- [Woman] Okay.

- When I started
professional help

with my therapist.

Because I was going
through bad stuff.

Then when I got cleaned up,

when I left the drugs and
the alcohol and everything,

I had the worst time.

I was not using, but all
this stuff started coming up

and started coming up
and started feeling.

And then I remember all the
abuse as a kid and everything.

It was just like, oh my God.

So, I went to
therapy for 10 years.

- [Woman] 10 years, hm.

- My therapist left a year
and a half ago from here.

I miss her a lot.

She moved to Denver.

But I was only with her.

And every time I
went to her room

and we started
talking and stuff,

and then at the end of
the session more or less,

She would give me
the teddy bear.

And I just remember I
would hug this teddy bear

and I would cry and cry and cry.

So, this was my
therapy for many years.

And then when she left,
she gave it to me.

(speaking in foreign language)

These are my recovery key tags.

This is when I first
got cleaned up.

When I stop using
drugs and alcohol.

This was June 4th 2003.

This was when I had 30 days.

60 days.

90 days.

Six months.

Nine months.

One year.

18 months.

Two, three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine,

10, 11 years.

June 4th.

I celebrate it.

- [Woman] That's fantastic.

- And these are
the original ones.

So, I always keep 'em
like right in my bed

where I can see them.

And it's says NA,
Narcotics Anonymous,

because I do
Narcotics Anonymous.

It's a 12-step program.

And it just says
clean and serene.

So, these have a lot
of pain and suffering

and everything else.

So, I work very hard
for my key tags.

Yeah.

This is what saves my life.

This is what saves me from me.

(singing in foreign language)

(birds chirping)

Mothers give you that
unconditional love,

regardless of what you
are and where you are.

Mom passed away very young
at 49 from two heart attacks.

I went into the refrigerator
where she was laying dead.

I just uncovered her
and I did her make-up.

I did her hair.

I put all the Estee
Lauder she used to love

in her casket.

But I was using, but
she never saw me clean.

She always saw me as
a using drug addict.

So, that was very
painful and it still is.

At times, the shame
and the guilt comes,

but today I know that she
sees me from wherever she is

and she's very proud of me.

She continues to be one
of those forces that

push me to do better.

(bright music)

My teacher always tell me,

I don't know when the
hell you're gonna learn.

That you're already done.

You are already Cassandro.

People just love you
for what you are.

Why do you continue to
do all this crazy shit

to prove to somebody?

Why do you compete
with the new cry babies

that are coming up?

And my teacher has a
point 'cause Lucha Libre

is not a business
no more for you.

You're the doctor's
business now.

I'm like, yeah, that's true.

I've thought about
retiring, but not now.

It's not my time.

My body tells me it's
time, but my ego tells me

I can still go.

Fabric is like $35 a yard.

And I use 12 yards for
a jacket and a gown.

- [Woman] How did you
come with this idea

of this train which
is really only you?

- This is Deeana's
wedding dress.

Uh-huh.

I loved it.

And I just think
it's so sophisticated

and it's so glamorous and
so elegant and it's so me.

It goes with my personality
and I like to dress well

and I did it, so.

This was made for
Valentine's Day.

This has the longest train
and I already cut it twice.

It's like 10 or 12 feet,
I can't even remember.

So, I did this for my London
tour in honor of Lady D.

She's one of my role models.

I love her, I love her.

(chattering)

(clapping)

I had to get two crowns
from my dislocation of chin

and I've been
hospitalized eight times

due to head concussions.

- [Woman] No.

Okay.

(laughs)

Happy you can laugh at it.

- I know.

- [Woman] So, four surgeries,
eight head concussions,

twice the teeth plus the
crowns, and anything else?

- Erm.

Um.

Now, what I'm struggling
lately is with my hands,

that if I carry my phone
on me, if I type or text,

it hurts.

I can't fold my thumb
no more like this.

- [Woman] Okay.

- My thumb just goes this way.

- I can see.
- It hurts a lot.

- [Woman] And does it mean
because you cannot take any drug

or alcohol or stuff like that,

does it mean that your
surgeries have to be done

in a different way?

- No.

No, they're done normally.

- [Woman] But you cannot take
morphine or things like this

after for the pain.

- No, I don't take, I only
take whatever they give me

in the hospital.
- Okay.

- But when I'm released
home, I come with Ibuprofen.

- Not very strong.
- Or Tylenol or whatever

they give now.

But I don't do like the
hard narcotic painkillers.

- Okay.
- I don't take those.

That's why I'm always like,
you know, in a lot of silence

and prayer when I'm at
home 'cause it's really,

it hurts.

(screeching)

I'm a (mumbles)

(laughs)

I'm a cow girl.

These boots were
made for walking.

This is where I started
school in first grade.

And this was my (speaking
in foreign language)

This is where also
my molestation

and sexual abuse started
in this house right here.

We used to live in
that house right there

when I was six or seven.

And my elementary school
was just right there.

Used to walk a lot.

Welcome to El Paso.

It's beautiful, huh?

My father was just a provider.

He didn't know how
to be a father.

He would just provide for us.

He's a Mexicano machista
and I was his first son

and I'm gay.

And, for many years, we were
not even close or nothing.

And now, from five years to now,

it's been the most amazing
relationship a kid can ask for

because I was a fatherless
kid for many years.

And today, the guy that I
love the most is my father

(speaking in foreign language)

My father has been with me
throughout all my injuries,

my surgeries and he's
carrying me like a baby

and he's coming, he
feeds me when I'm in bed,

when I couldn't get up.

And he finally tells me
like I'm very proud of you.

I have so much respect for you.

I love you.

(energetic music)

I am victorious of everything
that I've come through

because that made me stronger

and made me stand in the

But I love my job as
you can see right now.

I love my job because
I'm a bad ass.

There's been exoticos
or gay people

since 1940s in wrestling,

but they were like the
clowns of the circus.

They were to make people laugh.

And what I've done
in over 26 years

is dignify, with
respect and talent,

that we,
sexually-diverse people,

can really kick some
ass in the ring.

it just turned to

I can tell you it's been amazing

diversity in Lucha Libre.

breakdown in the dressing room.

me and I lost it.

These are the signs that
God is sending to me.

I have to go.

It's a really bad period,
but you've gone through

many worse one and
you gonna get strong

and you're gonna be okay again.

It's just a bad moment.

And you're just really tired
so it makes your emotion

goes down completely.

It's always that way,
when you're tired you cry.

Whatever the outcome
is I'm gonna be okay.

That's what I, I've been
through so much stuff.

and this is just another

I have lost my hair
three times in 29 years.

is a hair mask, Cassandro?

- A hair mask, well, me
that I don't use a mask?

- The most valuable thing

is my hair, and this
gives me identity,

gives me protection, gives
me a lot of personality

and everything, and the
guys that use the mask,

that's like their secret.

They cannot lose their
mask because then you see

their real identity.

people that lose it

and then their life falls
apart, their career goes south.

And there's people
that enjoy it.

And when I wrestle
with Peluchule Maldad,

he is one of the young
guys from El Paso

and the best guy that
I could have wrestled.

So, that's what I say,
it's more of an honor

for you to have my hair
than for me to have

a fucking mask on.

But he killed me.

I mean, he took advantage
that I'm really hurt

'cause he knew where to hit me.

And I knew it, I knew it
because we have fought

one year to get to this.

And we've bleeded
and he open my mouth

and then he hit me with
the chairs on the back

and my back was all cut
and I could barely move

and then I left my hand in
his mask like on his cheeks

and it was horrible.

I'm so glad it's done.

I mean, yes, I
care about my hair,

but it'll grow back.

My god, I look like a
butch, like a lesbian.
