of running one of these things?

affecting you in any way?

Well, it's kind of overwhelming us,

Well, just to try to get the people fed,

l would say, is one of the main objectives
we have right now.

All these young fellows here,
they've got to be fed,

and they're gonna get hungry,

and l hope that they can bring
enough supplies in for them.

That seems to be the big trouble,
and traffic.

Actually, you know that yourself
without me telling you.

lNTERVlEWER: What's it done
for business for you?

(LAUGHlNG) Oh, come on.

l'll say one thing for the young people.
They've been very nice, all of them, so far.

they're strewn on the sides of the roads,

There's this continual flow of people
just right in the street.

They're going along and it...

Jerry, it was all frozen,
so this is all l could get.

Well, l mean,
from a practical point of view,

what do you think, how could
they limit the crowd, you know?

Because they didn't want
this many people here really, l don't think,

but what could they do?

So you find the control points
at the beginning of the highways,

and those with tickets are allowed in,
and those without tickets are not,

- and you have to have some control.
- Right.

You have to have some.

You know, when you have
man-eating Marabunta ants

coming over a hill in South America,

if they want to cut them off
and stop them from coming,

they make a ditch, they put oil
in the ditch, and they make a flame.

Now, l'm not saying they should
put up flames to stop the people.

There has to be some way of
stopping the influx of humanity.

lNTERVlEWER: About numbers, tell me,
how many do you expect?

Two hundred thousand.

lNTERVlEWER: Two hundred thousand
people here over the three days?

lNTERVlEWER: Where will you put them?

We have contracted for land
surrounding the area,

setting up campgrounds,
water facilities, toilets, electric, food...

lNTERVlEWER: What does it cost to put

We're not necessarily gonna be together
throughout the whole thing.

particularly jealous of him?

lNTERVlEWER: Are you two
going together?

- No.

come up here together.

- Yeah, l like her. l love her. l enjoy her.

think about all this?

Well, the way l look at it, like,

l've known Jerry for what,
four or five, six months now.

When he moved into the family group
that l already knew for quite a while,

and in that time,
l got to know him real well,

and l learned to love him.

Like, you know,
we ball and everything, but...

Like, it's really a pretty good thing
because there's plenty of freedom

because, like, we're not going together,

and we're not in love
or anything like that, you know.

lNTERVlEWER: Can you communicate
with your parents?

l can communicate with them on one level

now that l've been away
from home for two years,

and at first it was very rough.

Now, you know, they're beginning
to mellow about it, you know,

and it's not so hard on them
that l'm the way l am,

but l can't really communicate to them
about anything that's really important

because they just could not understand it.

My mother really lives in a lot of pain
'cause she's sure l'm gonna go to hell,

and there's nothing l can do to tell her
that, you know,

that just doesn't exist for me,
you know?

(SCOFFS)

So there's no communication
on those levels.

My father once asked me whether l was in
a communist training camp or something

in the house that l lived in.

l could understand, you know, where
he's coming from because when he...

Well, he's an immigrant, you know,

and so he came over here to better himself
economically and socially,

and all that other rot.

And make it better for me,

and he can't understand
why l didn't play, you know...

You know, he's saying,
"Why aren't you playing the game?

"Here's all this opportunity.

"Here are all these things
which have so much value,"

but they only have value to him,

and he can't understand
why they don't have value to me.

But then again, he does have wisdom
enough to allow me to be who l am.

l guess he has some kind of idea
in his head

that l will, by doing what l'm doing,
learn for myself how to live,

and that's what he wants me to do,
anyway.

So he can't understand
why l am the way l am

but he very much wants me to be that way

because he knows
that's the only thing for me.

He started his trip
when he was four years old.

- lNTERVlEWER: Really?
- Yeah.

lNTERVlEWER: Nothing to do
with drugs or anything?

No. No.

Me, neither.

lNTERVlEWER: Do you think
that's a cop out or...

l don't know.
l used to be into drugs and l almost...

l was very heavy on drugs,

but now it seems
like it's almost contrived.

lt's like drugs and revolution
and a united front and all,

you know, l'm a human being
and that's all l wanna be.

And l don't want to...

l don't want to have a mass change

because a mass change
only brings around mass insanity.

l just want to be myself and find a place

where l can maintain some kind of balance
within myself, you know,

and kind of like the Hamlet trip, you know,
"To be or not to be."

lNTERVlEWER: Do you think
you could ever communicate

with a guy like Nixon or Westmoreland?

l hope so.

lNTERVlEWER: Yeah, but they're doing
their thing, aren't they?

l don't know.
lt's like they're neurotic or psychotic

or having fun as they say in... l don't know.

lNTERVlEWER: They'd say
the same thing of you.

Yeah, right, but it's not true
because l don't need all that power,

you know, l can just sit here
right on this roadside.

l don't have to become
President of the United States,

and l don't have to go all that way up.
l don't have to make the climb

'cause there's nothing to climb for.
lt's all sitting right here.

lNTERVlEWER: Do you have
tickets to this thing?

No.

lNTERVlEWER: How are you gonna get in?

- Well, l don't really know.
- l wasn't thinking about it.

l figured, you know, once l got here,

l'd see whatever happened
and go along with it.

lt's like people that are nowhere
are coming here

'cause there's people
that they think are somewhere,

so everybody is really looking for,
you know, some kind of answer

where there isn't one, l think.

Because like,
why would 300,000 or 120,000, 60,000,

70,000 people come to anything
just because it's music?

l mean, was music all that important?
l don't really think so.

People don't know.
They don't know how to live,

and they don't know what to do,

and they think that if they can come here
they can find out,

you know, what it is,
or how to maintain with it.

lt's just like people are very lost, l think.

America leads the whole world
in several ways.

Very recently, when l was in the East,

the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi met me

and asked me,
"What's happening in America?"

And l said, "America is becoming a whole.

"America is helping everybody
in the material field,

"but the time has come for America
to help the whole world

"with spirituality, also."

Saturday night we got word over at WVOS

that a lot of kids in town
didn't have anything to eat.

Word went out that everybody
should contribute food.

We went over to the park

and the village permitted
them to camp there.

A police car went up the street here
with a loudspeaker

and told the kids to come up there.

We fed them Saturday night,
all day Sunday.

Excess stuff was taken over to the school
and they flew it to the site.

lNTERVlEWER: How do you feel
about them now?

Very good. l have a 1 9-year-old myself.

He's out on the coast, and l felt that
we've got to give them a fair shake here.

lf kids are hungry,
you've got to feed them. l don't know...

- They're all on pot.
- Maybe we ought to put everybody on pot.

l'm on 17 B, and these kids were all happy.
They were all on pot.

- Well, whatever it is...
- lt never should have happened.

lf pot makes them happy and no trouble,

People got more excited about the kids

l was giving them water all along
the road here, right up on the bridge,

and they were not on pot.

Very lovely children, believe me.

There was enough stuff there.
There's no doubt about it.

They had hundreds of kids
in the hospital there.

lf you have 450,000 kids

They were selling these...
My kid with blue acid tablets,

which are bad,
and they were selling them.

True, but figure the law of averages.

lf you took 500 adults and brought them
together and had plenty of booze,

you know what would have happened?

There was no fighting. Nobody stealing.

We had to feed them.
What the hell else was there to do?

We were all sitting on a tree stump

The more people go on it,

About a year ago, l wouldn't have
believed this was the way to swim,

but this is the way to swim.

You go walking down the street
where all the cars were coming in,

and it's just the first day,
and it was just beautiful.

it's just a groove being with all the people.

You know, you realize all over the country,
they're coming together.

l think the body is beautiful.

l think skinny-dipping is just beautiful
if you want to do it, if you can do it.

But some people can't

because their environment made them,
you know, feel that it's wrong.

in their subconscious that it's right.

but we've been made to feel
that it's wrong.

What did you think about the kids?

From what l've heard
from the outside sources for many years,

l was very, very much surprised,
and l'm very happy to say

we think the people of this country
should be proud of these kids.

Notwithstanding the way they dress
or the way they wear their hair,

that's their own personal business.

But their inner workings,
their inner selves,

their self-demeanor cannot be questioned.

They can't be questioned
as good American citizens.

That's kind of surprising
coming from a cop.

We have had no idea

and because of that,

as far as water and food and so forth.
