let's say hello to two Jay Z-nesses of magic,

Penn and Teller!

All right, Penn, Teller, don't get too comfy.

You've got some badass magicians coming your way.

Like this one.

- My great-grandmother was the first female magician

to have her own television show,

called "The Magic Lady," in the 1950s.

My grandmother, with my grandfather

and his brother, started the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

I grew up surrounded by magicians,

and watching a lot of card tricks.

The adults I was around

were like children themselves in a lot of ways.

A lot of pranksters, you know?

I never wanted to know how any of the magic was done.

I still don't. I like magic that feels very dreamlike.

There's a-- [gasps]

And I love that.

I think my grandmother would be so happy

that I'm doing this tonight,

and I would like to think she's here with me in some way.

I'd like to make her proud.

[cheers and applause]

- Ladies and gentlemen, from the royal family of magic,

Liberty Larsen! [cheers and applause]

- Thank you, Alyson.

Would you come join me at the table, please?

- Hello. - Nice to meet you.

- Nice to meet you.

- Alyson, I am a fourth-generation magician

from a family of magic,

and I didn't start performing magic until a few years ago.

It took me a while to surrender.

But once I did, one of the first things

I noticed about it

is that I really don't like lying to people.

And that's a real problem. It interferes with this job,

because it's kind of par for the course.

You know, silent magic, not an issue.

That's very honest to me. It's visual.

Teller made the right choice.

He will never have to deal with the kind of lying

that I'm talking about.

But as a magician, if you're performing as yourself--

if you're performing as yourself and not a character,

as soon as you open your mouth,

it's sort of inevitable you're just going to start lying,

and I have really terrible magician's guilt.

So when I sit here with you, on a very primal level,

every cell in my body does not want to lie to you.

So I'm not going to.

So there. - Okay.

It's refreshing. - Alyson, I brought

a time machine with me to the theater tonight.

[laughter]

Alyson, this is the key to the time machine.

I'd like you, if you would, to wear it

around your neck and keep it safe.

- Okay. - And don't worry.

You're not going to travel through time.

You're going to stay right where you are.

I am gonna use a little spark of your energy for this,

so if you would, I'd like you to write a message to yourself,

at any age, something very short, just across here.

Something you'd like to tell yourself at a younger age.

- Ah. Let's see. - [whistling, humming]

- All right.

- All right. It says, choose happy.

Oh, I know. I love it.

All right, so. [clears throat]

I'm sorry, it's not--

it's not about the message.

But if you could, just keep this safe,

and I'm going to fold up this half.

Choose happy.

And what I'm going to do is I'm going to place it

under the veil of time.

Alyson, if you would,

would you hold this very tightly for me?

You got it? - Yes. Yes.

- All right, now your message

is going to go directly into a portal

where it will travel back in time to your former self.

You'll feel really good.

You will choose happy.

It will move forward to a point earlier this evening

where it will freeze, and that's how we're going to discover it.

It just--it feels so good

to just be open and honest with you.

It's just--not have to lie to-- [clears throat]

I retrieved the time machine

from a man in the mountains of, um...

Belgium. [laughter]

And it has two components to it.

This is the first. It is a portal.

Now, many people don't know this,

but all wine glasses are actually portals.

Alyson, had you ever had an experience

with a piece of apparatus like

this that took you somewhere really unusual and exciting?

- Yes. [laughter]

- Then you know exactly what I'm talking about.

- Yeah. - And the other half

of the time machine, I keep in here.

Because, Alyson, it is very sensitive,

and very, um...

delicate,

and it is especially sensitive to light.

Alyson, this is where time freezes.

So what I'm going to do is

I'm gonna place the portal under the silk.

And on the count of three, you're gonna

drop your message inside and quickly

put your hand over it so it can't escape, all right?

- Okay. - Okay.

One, two, three. Got it?

- Yes. - Okay, may I take it from you?

- Yes. - Can you hear it?

- No.

- Perhaps it's already passed through the veil.

- Oh. - Whew.

Alyson, do you still have the key around your neck?

- Oh. - Oh!

- Well, it's traveling somewhere else,

but yes, there it is, yeah.

- Well, as far as I'm concerned, this could only mean one thing,

which is that your message

went through the portal, beyond the veil,

reached your former self,

jumped back to the moment just before I walked on stage,

where it froze itself in time in this little locked box.

Would you please open this box for me?

- Oh, sure. Here we go.

- [humming]

- Okay. Oops. Ah.

- [humming]

All right.

- Ohh. - Would you feel

the top of that? - Ooh.

- What is it? - It's an ice cube.

- It's real ice. - Yes.

- Alyson. - Wow.

- Hmm. Oh, slippery thing.

- Very. - [humming]

- [gasps] - Alyson, I don't wanna touch it

Would you please? - Yes. Ooh, it's cold.

- And would you unfold it? It's cold.

- Very cold. [gasps] - Is that your message?

- What? Yes. - Does it match?

Ladies and gentlemen, the time traveling card.

- Totally. Liberty Larsen!

That's so cool!

- Thank you, thank you.

- So did you always think, well, I have to be a magician?

- No. - Really?

- No. If you'd asked me at almost any age,

I would've 100% said no way.

I was convinced I would never do magic.

- Really? So what changed your mind?

- Well, a few acts that I saw that really inspired me,

when I was around 25,

and I started just looking at magic differently.

And maybe something just switched on in my DNA.

I don't know. - Yeah.

Ohh, I'm glad you--

I'm glad you switched, switched over. Yes.

- Me too. It's been so--

it's such a fun way to play with people.

- Yeah, all right. - Mm-hmm.

- Well, let's see what the guys have to say.

- All right. - Penn, Teller.

- Liberty, what took you so long?

Why have you just come to magic now?

I guess you were just answering

that maybe while we were talking.

But you're so good, and I was really,

I really love the not lying premise

with the time machine.

It's just terrific. - Thank you.

- And when you were just performing there,

we were just lapping it up.

Every moment of it was just,

was just fabulous and great.

And also, you know, what you're doing,

essentially, is the object in the impossible location.

- Mm-hmm.

- And it's a really good presentation of that.

And you also have something in that

that looks like it can't be gimmicked, which is an ice cube.

- Mm-hmm. - You know, everybody

knows what an ice cube is,

and it looks like there's no way to fake that whatsoever.

And that's a beautiful part of that trick,

'cause it's so real

and so honest all the way through.

And although you said you weren't lying,

you kind of weren't.

I mean, the presentation has very little jive in it.

It's just kind of straightforward,

and a little bit of help here and there,

that I hope in what I said gave you some sort of hint.

But we hope to see you doing a lot of magic, Liberty.

Let's meet our next performer.

- I remember, I was six years old when I saw magic on TV.

I remember one specific magician.

He made a card tear in pieces and then restore again.

I was absolutely amazed by that.

I start to travel all over, and I got some awards.

It was like a dream, and it still is,

because I'm working with different magicians now

that were my idols and still are.

- Hi, I'm David Copperfield.

Jorge Blass brings the art of magic to a whole new level.

- Through the years, I realized that

the bigger risks means bigger results.

And I want to fool Penn and Teller,

so I'm taking some risks tonight.

[cheers and applause]

- He's one of the most recognized magicians in Spain,

along with a randomly selected audience member.

Say bienvenidos to Jorge Blass.

- Hola. I'd like to tell you a magic fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was a princess named Candace, right?

Tonight, Your Majesty, we will find you your prince, okay?

- Okay. - Not just any prince,

but a kind and handsome prince.

You will love him, I'm sure.

This prince lives in this beautiful castle, right here.

It may look old-fashioned, but I promise you,

it's beachfront property in Malibu.

Yeah. Shall I draw your prince for you?

Okay, so now, drawing is not one of my greatest talents,

but Alyson, could you take the castle for me?

- Sure. - You're a princess too.

- Aw, thanks.

- Now, what do you look for in a man?

Maybe a crown?

We in Spain love crowns.

Maybe a happy face, like this.

One eye.

Maybe big arms.

Watch, this is a long cape.

Okay, Candace, you can swipe left on this one, maybe.

But I promise you,

my magic is much better than my drawing, okay?

Here, we have a deck of cards.

And one of these cards is your prince.

Now, you know something?

An old witch cast a spell,

and something magical happened.

Can you see this?

The evil witch magically transformed

the jack of diamonds into green.

[audience oohs]

That's amazing, a green card.

Watch. Green on both sides.

That's very weird. Green card.

These are very hard to get nowadays.

Yeah. That's it.

[applause]

Can you check it out, please? Maybe I should hold it

so I don't get deported after the show.

Okay, nice.

So I need you to please check the jack of diamonds.

Back to the story.

You know, when the prince changed to green,

he started to have convulsions, like this.

By the way, the prince is called Mike, okay?

- Okay. - You like Mike?

- Sure. - Good.

So he began to have convulsions,

and the evil witch magically transformed the jack of diamonds

into a little creature with little green legs.

And as you can see,

he was transformed into a little green frog.

This prince may not look like much,

but he's willing to fulfill your every desire, okay?

You have many desires here.

I'd like you to see that this is a deck of cards, okay?

And you can take a bunch of cards

so you can see many, many desires.

And I need you to make a choice, okay?

So please cut the cards anywhere you want.

Go ahead. Did you cut freely?

- Yes.

- Do you want to complete and cut again? It's your choice.

- No. - Are you happy?

- Mm-hmm.

- So this is the card you just selected.

I need you to please remember the card.

At home, too, please remember the card you see.

Now, we will lose the card.

I need you to push, like this, so it goes through the middle.

And now, something very interesting comes, okay?

I need you to cut the cards, half of the deck. Okay.

And now cut again, please.

Nice. And another cut. Good. Did you cut freely?

- Yes. - Okay.

I need you to put the jack of diamonds, okay,

on top of one of the cards you just selected.

Go ahead.

Put the frog on top of one of the piles.

This is not selected, right?

- No. - So there are many

different cards here, not selected.

Do you want to change your mind?

- No. - No? You don't want this one?

- No. - Many cards, all different.

They were not selected, okay.

And last chance, Candace.

Do you want to change your mind?

No? So you don't like this pile?

Okay. They're all different, as you can see.

And you landed on this specific card.

And you can see here, they are all single--

you can touch them. All single cards like this,

or they are all, not selected by you, right?

Because Mike took you to one specific card,

and the cool part is right here

is exactly the card you desired,

the seven of hearts. It's really cool, right?

- Yeah, very cool. - Now, to release the spell

and live happily ever after, you need to kiss the frog.

- That frog? - Yeah.

So I need you to put your hand like this,

and I will put your desire,

the seven of hearts and the jack of diamonds,

your frog, okay?

The prince, Mike. And I need you to kiss the frog.

So watch Mike close, okay?

And now, you can see here, right here,

something magical happens.

Now the prince is free!

The spell is released.

But, however, every time a spell is released,

another card takes his place.

Can you open the frog right here, in your own hands?

Go ahead, open your hands,

and just see that right there

is what your heart desires,

the seven of hearts.

Right there. It's impossible, right there.

Now comes the big finale of this story.

Let me put the prince into the deck like this,

and let me get the frog again,

because now the final jump is going to amaze you, okay?

The frog will jump and land over your prince.

Watch. [blows]

Watch.

Can you please cut the cards? Cut the cards.

Wow!

The fairy tale came true!

And it's exactly your card, the jack of diamonds!

Your prince! Wow!

Can you turn the chair?

But Candace, you didn't want a frog, you wanted a prince.

And I want this story to have a happy ending.

Mike is here!

And they were all happily ever after.

- Jorge Blass! - Thank you.

- Wow. Do you think you fooled Penn and Teller?

- Well, maybe. There is something they don't know.

- What? - Yeah, how did I get the frog

into this country? - Mm!

They don't know that.

- So you do close-up magic and big illusions?

- I do big illusions.

I do full theaters, shows in Spain and all over Europe.

And hopefully very soon here. You like the frog?

- I love the frog. - What about the prince?

You like the prince?

- I like the frog.

Let's go, let's go see what our princes think.

- Okay. - All right, Penn, Teller. Hi.

- Hi. How are you? How are you?

You know, usually we're the ones who talk in code,

but you called your little frog Mike,

your prince Mike, and then said, come close.

And for those who watch the credits

at the end of the show carefully,

they'll see that one of our consultants is Mike Close.

One of the finest, a very good friend of ours,

and probably one of the finest magicians alive.

And the frog routine, the basic idea

of the frog routine is Mike Close's.

And you already dropped that to us.

We knew that the artist's dream,

as soon as you drew the prince,

Teller knew the real prince was coming.

Once we saw that, no surprise there for us.

A real important part of magic is surprise.

You see something,

and if you don't know it's coming,

you aren't ready to figure it out.

So we had a guess the prince was coming.

We had a guess that the,

that the frog was gonna have the selected card in it.

We had a guess of all of that.

And we did not have a guess

that you were gonna produce a real frog.

So we were very surprised by that.

Mike Close does not have the real frog.

So that surprised us.

We thought about it quite a bit.

And now it's our chance to surprise you maybe a little bit.

We think with that frog coming in,

this may come as a surprise,

but we think you fooled us.

We didn't see you load the frog.

Wow! - Yes! You fooled them!

Oh, my goodness!

We have a fooler! - Thank you so much.

Thank you. Wow. - Yay, a frog fooler!

Thank you.

Did I fool Penn and Teller?

This last time on the show,

the experience was very nerve-racking.

I mean, it was tense. - It says,

"Paul Gertner, you fooled us." Can you see that?

- Yay!

- Fortunately, the trick did not fail.

But this time, it's gonna take a little more than that.

One of the techniques I use to come up with solutions

is what I call "dreamstorming."

It's planting the problem in your head as you go to sleep,

and your subconscious works on it.

It's basically dreaming up solutions.

[bells ringing]

When you wake up, ideas come up

that you didn't have before.

Dreamstorming.

[cheers and applause]

- "Fool Us" historians

will certainly remember our next magician.

"Fool Us" virgins,

let me introduce you to Paul Gertner.

- [laughs]

Well, Penn and Teller, it is a pleasure

to be back again on "Fool Us."

And I'm very excited to be here this year,

because I get to bring my favorite magic illusion.

The cups and balls.

Now, I know you're very familiar with this trick,

because you perform it.

But for those in the audience that are not, let me explain.

It's based on an old gambling scam known

as the three shell game.

Now, part of the game is that the ball is soft.

It's made of sponge.

And the cup is solid.

It's made of brass metal.

So whenever that ball is under the cup, you can't see it.

And when the magician mixes them around, you can't hear it.

And at any given time,

the magician can make that ball disappear.

Now, of course Penn and Teller

already know the secret to this trick.

The secret to this trick is you use an extra ball.

And you always hide the extra ball

underneath the cup on your right.

So I'm going to perform the trick,

but I'm going to do it a little differently.

Because I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

And in Pittsburgh, we manufacture steel.

And when I was a kid and I was looking for a ball

to do the trick with,

I found one in my dad's toolbox.

It was a steel ball bearing.

You see, my dad was a steelworker in Pittsburgh.

In fact, my favorite childhood memory of Dad is the day

he and I shared a drink after work together.

It happened in our kitchen.

I was practicing this trick all day long.

And Dad came home from work hot, tired, and thirsty.

And I said, "Dad, would you watch my new trick?"

And he says, "Oh, okay, okay. But first I need a drink."

And he went to the refrigerator

and he poured himself a cold beer.

And then he set a glass in front of me,

and he poured me a Coke.

And once Dad and I had our refreshments,

well, I got a chance to show him this trick.

But I was a kid. I didn't know you were

supposed to do the trick with the little sponge ball.

And I put Dad's steel ball

under the cup, and I mixed them around,

and I said, "Dad, where's the ball?"

Of course he knew immediately.

And pretty soon I figured it out,

that you can't fool anyone with a steel ball

and a metal cup because of the element of sound.

Unless, unless you could cause

the sound and the ball to disappear

and travel over here inside your pocket.

Now, that's what it looked like the first time.

I'll do that again.

This time, Alyson, I'll let you take a guess.

If you watch the ball, take a guess.

Which cup do you think I just slipped that ball under?

Which one?

[laughter]

Well, no, look. I'll explain, Alyson.

Remember, you always hide the extra ball

underneath the cup on your right.

But of course, Alyson, in my book,

no matter what you choose, you're a winner.

You're a winner. Three cups and three balls.

Now we're ready.

Now we're ready to start the trick.

Now, if you watch the ball right here,

whenever I give it a little push, okay,

it will actually penetrate right through the top,

balanced on the edge. I'll do that again.

This time, the ball will go right

through the top of not one,

but actually two cups, like this.

Balanced on the edge.

But I want everyone to know exactly where the balls are.

So whenever I place a ball under a cup,

I'll give it a little shake,

and you'll hear it under the cup.

Okay, here we go. Ball number one,

under cup number one.

Ball number two, under cup number two.

And ball number three under cup number three.

And if I take two of them invisibly,

and I set them on the middle,

and I give them a little tap,

you see, now, these two are empty,

because they've all come together in the center.

Thank you. Thank you.

But, you know, it is the end of the trick.

And when I do this at trade show exhibits,

this is the part that gathers the biggest crowd,

so watch closely.

You see, I actually take the ball out

from under the cup.

And I say to somebody, watch.

I'll remove one ball from the game, like this.

And then I put it in my pocket.

And then I say, look, if I remove another ball

from the cup, Penn,

how many would that leave underneath the center cup?

- One! - Just one? I think.

- Well-- - Yeah, just one.

But if there's one there,

you see, there's another over there.

And I'll show you how the trick is done.

You see, I never really put the ball in the hand,

I never put it in a pocket.

But while everyone's watching the pocket,

I actually can slip the ball under the cup,

and it looks like it was there all the while.

But if I really get rid of it, Alyson,

this time, take one last guess.

How many balls do you think are underneath the center cup?

One, two, or three?

- I don't know, one. - For you, for you, Alyson,

I did all three. - Wow.

- But, you know, you can't do this trick

with just three balls.

You need an extra one.

And Alyson, where did I say

we always hide the extra ball?

- Right. - Exactly. Exactly.

Underneath the cup on the right.

But there's another extra ball right over there.

And they're both pretty big.

And they're both solid and pretty heavy.

But underneath the center cup is the biggest one of all,

because there it is-- no, that's not it.

That's the biggest one.

But I can't figure out

where it comes from.

Oh, Penn and Teller?

I said, I told you this trick was inspired by my dad.

Which is why I can't help but think of him every time I do it.

Which is why in this cup I always keep Dad's balls.

And in this cup, in honor of Dad,

I always keep a can of Coke.

And in this cup, we'll remember,

you always hide the extra ball

underneath the cup on your right.

- Ohh.

[cheers and applause] So--

So, Dad, wherever you are...

here's to you.

Man, you've got balls. - Well, I've had them

for many years.

- Gosh, just think, like, okay, I've fooled Penn and Teller.

I'm--I'm done.

Like, but you just have to try, try it twice?

- Well, I-- but this is my favorite trick.

- This? - And I, it's just

a treat to come and just do the cups

and balls for them. - Yeah.

- And I just couldn't do just the cups and balls.

I had to throw a little kicker in.

- So, yeah, you seem to specialize in kickers.

- Yeah, well, I think all magic should have that.

I mean, that's what magic's all about,

is about having that little moment at the end

where someone thinks the end is there,

and then all of a sudden, boom, you hit them one more time.

- Wow. - You know?

- Time to see if they got it. Penn, Teller? What do you think?

- We first heard about you, Paul, doing the cups and balls.

And it's not fair to say

that you're just doing the cups and balls,

'cause for hundreds of years, maybe thousands,

people have done the cups and balls,

and it's always been a visual trick.

And your genius is making it also an audio trick.

And that is something that, from the first moment

I saw you do it, absolutely blew my mind.

Having that sound to do at the same time,

what people don't know,

who don't know how the trick is done don't know,

is that you found special sleights

and special handlings just to deal with the sound.

- Yeah. - If you were to write

a book on this,

which I imagine you will someday,

'cause it's so brilliant,

you will have to have a whole separate thing on

how you make the sounds come

from a different place than they actually are,

and absolutely be beautiful like that.

Also, in magic, you know

that certain things are just compressible.

We all know sponge balls are compressible.

Indeed, almost everything else

used in every magic act is compressible.

We all know how to make all sorts of things look solid

that are actually compressible.

You cannot do that with ball bearings.

And some people would say, when they know how a trick is done,

that makes the glass half-empty.

But I think when you know how a trick is done,

it makes the glass half full. - Mm-hmm.

- Do you know that they know what were they talking about,

how you did it? - I think so.

I think they, yeah, we're talking.

- Okay, so.

- Listen, it's now a tie.

You got us last time, we got you this time.

I started to study magic,

And I met a lot of girls.

Because I hide the shyness behind the objects.

I realized if I wanted to live from magic,

I have to perform for kids.

They don't care about if you make an elephant disappear.

They want to be surprised. They want fun.

They want to laugh.

When I perform for them, I'm not an adult.

I'm a little guy like them.

And they say, oh, look, life gives you surprises.

it's so much harder to bust a trick

when there's such a wonderful story.

The misdirection in this is the plot.

It's the misdirection is the following of the story.

But I think I can probably give you,

not very much in code,

I'll actually tell you who some of your heroes are, I think.

I think that you owe a great deal of respect to Slydini.

I think there's a great deal of respect to Tommy Wonder.

I think Albert Goshman would also be someone you like.

Albert Goshman did the coin in unexpected places all the time,

in the salt and pepper and all that, wonderful stuff.

I'm gonna say something that sounds a little bit dirty,

but it's not, it's just a little bit secret.

There a lot of misdirected loads that were wonderful in there.

And--and--

and you want me to do more, or you getting an idea here?

You getting an idea here, or you want more?

- You look as confused as I feel.

- No, I didn't-- I couldn't understand.

- Yeah. I think this may be just language problems.

- We're gonna go to the judges,

because there's a little bit a language barrier.

- And the both of you, we have Johnny Thompson and Mike Close,

they're listening to everything we say.

- And the verdict is...
