But I didn't pressure him. 392 00:20:39,636 --> 00:20:41,876 I wanted to try to gain his trust and, and 393 00:20:41,876 --> 00:20:43,876 get, you know, as much history as possible before 394 00:20:43,876 --> 00:20:44,516 She kicked me out. 395 00:20:49,065 --> 00:20:50,785 I said, well, they're suggesting it to me. 396 00:20:50,785 --> 00:20:53,225 At home, perhaps John will fake his death. 397 00:20:53,225 --> 00:20:55,985 and you execute from the beginning. And she 398 00:20:55,985 --> 00:20:58,025 She became very argumentative and said that was it, you 399 00:20:58,025 --> 00:21:00,225 Know that this is completely false, she 400 00:21:00,225 --> 00:21:02,465 he said. He was devastated and heartbroken. 401 00:21:04,155 --> 00:21:05,715 And that was it on the first day. 402 00:21:12,825 --> 00:21:14,385 Initially, she tells the story that 403 00:21:14,385 --> 00:21:16,705 She didn't know he was alive and that and 404 00:21:16,705 --> 00:21:19,665 which lasts 48 hours 405 00:21:19,665 --> 00:21:21,505 until we receive this extraordinary call from 406 00:21:21,505 --> 00:21:23,545 A housewife in Cheshire who says: I have 407 00:21:23,545 --> 00:21:25,105 I just found a picture of John Darwin and he 408 00:21:25,105 --> 00:21:27,265 He was alive and you know, well with his 409 00:21:27,265 --> 00:21:29,745 lady and a real estate agent in Panama when 410 00:21:29,745 --> 00:21:31,825 She said she thought he was dead. 411 00:21:35,755 --> 00:21:37,275 It's the most honest, the most 412 00:21:37,275 --> 00:21:38,795 extraordinary, we call them ring spikes in 413 00:21:38,795 --> 00:21:39,835 The business is one of the most 414 00:21:39,835 --> 00:21:41,075 The most extraordinary ring insurance ever. 415 00:21:44,705 --> 00:21:46,385 My phone rings and it's the evening news. 416 00:21:46,385 --> 00:21:48,145 of the mirror. And he says: Dave, I have 417 00:21:48,145 --> 00:21:49,505 I have something to tell you and you're not here. 418 00:21:49,505 --> 00:21:51,905 I will believe this. It is an image of 419 00:21:51,905 --> 00:21:54,785 John and Anne Darwin in Panama for 18 months 420 00:21:54,785 --> 00:21:57,705 It's been a while. So he is lying through his teeth. 421 00:22:00,805 --> 00:22:03,685 So I turn my laptop around and 422 00:22:03,685 --> 00:22:05,845 She just turned white. And I said, I am 423 00:22:05,845 --> 00:22:07,605 Sorry, Anne, you know the game is over. 424 00:22:07,605 --> 00:22:10,085 I know you're lying, he said. I think 425 00:22:10,285 --> 00:22:11,685 This image says it all, doesn't it? 426 00:22:11,685 --> 00:22:13,685 And I said, "Yes, I'm sorry." And that's it. 427 00:22:19,105 --> 00:22:20,985 It wasn't the place or any journalist who... 428 00:22:20,985 --> 00:22:22,425 He sold the story. It was an armchair. 429 00:22:22,425 --> 00:22:23,985 detective, a lady at home who was very 430 00:22:23,985 --> 00:22:26,025 He suspected all this and continued. 431 00:22:26,025 --> 00:22:28,545 to Google and she typed the words John 432 00:22:28,545 --> 00:22:31,505 and Panama, press search and then press 433 00:22:31,505 --> 00:22:34,385 images and highlight that incredible image. 434 00:22:36,795 --> 00:22:38,955 They were very excited to be there. 435 00:22:38,955 --> 00:22:41,875 in Panama and they were very happy. 436 00:22:41,875 --> 00:22:44,475 They were, in our opinion, very pleasant. 437 00:22:44,475 --> 00:22:47,065 couple. Sometimes we saw each other 438 00:22:47,065 --> 00:22:49,865 They were always happy and 439 00:22:49,865 --> 00:22:52,745 And you know, get along 440 00:22:52,745 --> 00:22:55,555 Okay, I wish I could do that. 441 00:22:55,555 --> 00:22:57,355 It was never taken. But you know, it was 442 00:22:57,355 --> 00:22:59,475 done in an instant. There wasn't, there wasn't 443 00:22:59,475 --> 00:23:01,035 warning that this would happen 444 00:23:01,035 --> 00:23:02,515 It happens. When you say you wish this never happened 445 00:23:02,515 --> 00:23:03,955 was taken, does that mean you want it? 446 00:23:03,955 --> 00:23:06,475 Would they never have caught you? No. No. 447 00:23:09,075 --> 00:23:11,035 I knew it would all come to a head. 448 00:23:11,075 --> 00:23:13,995 eventually and when you 449 00:23:13,995 --> 00:23:16,675 get into a situation like this where. 450 00:23:18,495 --> 00:23:20,735 You're going so deep that you can't 451 00:23:20,735 --> 00:23:23,635 Find a way out. I said, 452 00:23:23,635 --> 00:23:24,835 Look, well, you've stuck with it since the beginning. 453 00:23:24,835 --> 00:23:26,275 to start. And she said no, she said, I 454 00:23:26,475 --> 00:23:28,275 She thought she had died in the accident, she 455 00:23:28,275 --> 00:23:30,275 he said. And about a year later, he became 456 00:23:30,275 --> 00:23:32,835 At my door hoping he had been 457 00:23:32,835 --> 00:23:34,635 declared dead and, and, and I got the 458 00:23:34,635 --> 00:23:35,395 insurance money 459 00:23:36,985 --> 00:23:39,105 Journalistically, it was incredible to have 460 00:23:39,105 --> 00:23:41,145 A great story. But, you know, from a different point of view 461 00:23:41,145 --> 00:23:43,105 From a human point of view, I mean, it was 462 00:23:43,105 --> 00:23:44,745 Just like her, his life was falling apart. 463 00:23:44,745 --> 00:23:47,185 in front of her. She said they weren't my children 464 00:23:47,185 --> 00:23:48,545 They will never forgive me. I can't. 465 00:23:48,545 --> 00:23:50,705 I think I was lied to, my own children were lied to. 466 00:23:52,685 --> 00:23:54,605 She knew that her fantasy world, in which 467 00:23:54,605 --> 00:23:56,565 They had been living for 5 and a half years, 468 00:23:56,285 --> 00:23:57,845 The years had passed. 469 00:24:01,545 --> 00:24:03,785 The Daily Mirror The next day I put 470 00:24:03,785 --> 00:24:05,705 Canoes. That, Panama, and that changed. 471 00:24:05,705 --> 00:24:06,305 all. 472 00:24:14,355 --> 00:24:17,115 It was clear he was suffering. 473 00:24:17,115 --> 00:24:19,395 of many, many things perhaps, but 474 00:24:19,395 --> 00:24:22,035 Amnesia was one of them. To remain 475 00:24:22,035 --> 00:24:24,075 I was worried he might run away. 476 00:24:24,315 --> 00:24:25,635 And let's be honest: I had made a 477 00:24:25,635 --> 00:24:28,235 A smart job for 5 and a half years, so I wanted 478 00:24:28,235 --> 00:24:30,875 Make sure he doesn't do it again. So 479 00:24:30,875 --> 00:24:32,755 It was a prison case. 480 00:24:37,665 --> 00:24:39,985 I knew what prison would be like. 481 00:24:39,985 --> 00:24:42,705 I worked as a prison guard, but I 482 00:24:42,705 --> 00:24:45,345 I didn't expect to be treated like this. 483 00:24:45,345 --> 00:24:48,145 harshly by the courts. But 484 00:24:48,145 --> 00:24:49,505 That's another story. 485 00:24:56,705 --> 00:24:57,745 Hello, please. 486 00:25:00,435 --> 00:25:02,715 It's been five years since he disappeared in 487 00:25:02,715 --> 00:25:05,115 Five days since he apparently returned 488 00:25:05,115 --> 00:25:07,995 of the dead.
