2
00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:31,751
So this is the 300?

3
00:00:31,919 --> 00:00:35,963
Ultra-modern. The 1958 type
is already there now.

4
00:00:36,131 --> 00:00:41,171
Ermine white. 17 layers of paint.
- The 17th will do it.

5
00:00:41,343 --> 00:00:45,007
Power steering and brakes,
electric windows and mirrors.

6
00:00:45,179 --> 00:00:48,927
You don't have to do anything anymore.
- I'm not looking for a car for that.

7
00:00:49,099 --> 00:00:52,681
Torque Flite gearbox.
Leading.

8
00:00:52,852 --> 00:00:56,765
One push and the hood opens.
- I already feel the wind.

9
00:00:56,938 --> 00:00:58,598
Just graduated?

10
00:00:58,773 --> 00:01:01,524
Harvard. Rights.
- Always good.

11
00:01:01,692 --> 00:01:06,020
Do you live in Washington?
- I work for the government.

12
00:01:06,195 --> 00:01:08,768
Temporary, mind you.

13
00:01:09,031 --> 00:01:13,075
Take a seat, Mr. Goodman.
-Goodwin.

14
00:01:14,994 --> 00:01:19,571
Be careful with your cigar.
- The car is now the boss of man.

15
00:01:19,748 --> 00:01:21,539
Just start it.

16
00:01:21,749 --> 00:01:25,367
Here?
- Come on. He is free.

17
00:01:32,382 --> 00:01:37,090
Hear that mighty engine.
- This is the city before it.

18
00:01:37,261 --> 00:01:40,345
The Bendix Electrojector gives him...

19
00:01:40,514 --> 00:01:43,549
390 hp.
- Exactly.

20
00:01:43,724 --> 00:01:47,804
My wife would kill me.
- Beautiful death.

21
00:01:48,353 --> 00:01:53,773
You admire the chairs.
Pigskin and calfskin.

22
00:01:53,941 --> 00:01:58,020
Hand sanded.
- My nicest chair in the garage.

23
00:01:58,194 --> 00:02:03,353
Now the radio. The only thing more beautiful
then the engine sounds.

24
00:02:07,701 --> 00:02:10,737
The Russians are winning the space race.

25
00:02:10,912 --> 00:02:16,154
You hear Sputnik, a satellite
which was launched this morning...

26
00:02:16,333 --> 00:02:19,535
in orbit around the Earth.

27
00:02:19,711 --> 00:02:24,621
A sound that says:
America is not doing well.

28
00:02:24,798 --> 00:02:28,131
Unless America buys the 300.

29
00:04:33,939 --> 00:04:35,978
Get rid of that thing.

30
00:04:36,650 --> 00:04:39,650
Too much light on the right.
- Look after.

31
00:04:45,740 --> 00:04:48,313
There are the questions.

32
00:04:49,535 --> 00:04:54,445
'Like I'm at the bottom
from the sea walk.'

33
00:04:54,664 --> 00:04:58,791
'Like a long time ago
drowned.'

34
00:04:58,959 --> 00:05:00,785
Five minutes.

35
00:05:05,047 --> 00:05:06,920
Ready, America?

36
00:05:08,133 --> 00:05:09,710
One minute.

37
00:05:09,884 --> 00:05:14,628
Done with the test image, video?
Clear the floor.

38
00:05:16,305 --> 00:05:20,634
Light on. NB.
- 30 seconds left.

39
00:05:20,809 --> 00:05:25,434
Camera one reflects.
Adjust the light behind Jack.

40
00:05:26,939 --> 00:05:31,813
Is my nose properly highlighted?
Last week I was a sundial.

41
00:05:31,943 --> 00:05:33,484
Countdown.

42
00:05:33,652 --> 00:05:35,229
Broadcast in 10...

43
00:05:35,404 --> 00:05:39,531
Attention timpanist, music,
announcement.

44
00:05:42,909 --> 00:05:43,905
Timpani.

45
00:05:45,161 --> 00:05:48,114
Swelling. Announcement.

46
00:05:48,247 --> 00:05:51,117
Geritol, the best health drink.

47
00:05:51,291 --> 00:05:53,995
Geritol, the medicinal drink...

48
00:05:54,168 --> 00:06:00,170
that will help you recover quickly,
presents the exciting quiz:

49
00:06:02,716 --> 00:06:08,551
Brought to your screen by NBC,
the National Broadcasting Company.

50
00:06:08,721 --> 00:06:13,299
From New York to Los Angeles,
from Seattle to St. Petersburg...

51
00:06:13,475 --> 00:06:17,970
through a network of affiliates
stations all over the country.

52
00:06:18,145 --> 00:06:22,722
Now follows '21' with presenter
Jack Barry.

53
00:06:23,399 --> 00:06:27,063
Two players need 21 points
get.

54
00:06:27,235 --> 00:06:31,612
Everyone in a soundproof cabin.
They don't know each other's score.

55
00:06:31,739 --> 00:06:34,988
$500 per point...

56
00:06:35,158 --> 00:06:39,072
in the game '21'!

57
00:06:41,788 --> 00:06:45,571
This is your host Jack Barry.

58
00:06:50,879 --> 00:06:53,001
Good evening, I'm Jack Barry.

59
00:06:53,172 --> 00:06:57,548
After a few draws
games must be played by Herbert Stempel...

60
00:06:57,717 --> 00:07:01,761
Play for $3,000 per point.
So he can...

61
00:07:01,929 --> 00:07:07,005
as much as $100,000
win, a new record for TV.

62
00:07:07,183 --> 00:07:10,349
But he could also lose everything.

63
00:07:10,477 --> 00:07:12,600
Nervous ?

64
00:07:13,313 --> 00:07:15,352
It's just money.

65
00:07:15,606 --> 00:07:20,397
The players can track each other's score
not hear or see.

66
00:07:20,568 --> 00:07:25,692
The questioners have again
came up with tough questions.

67
00:07:25,864 --> 00:07:31,237
We wonder if the unstoppable
Herbert Stempel can be stopped.

68
00:07:31,368 --> 00:07:33,159
Can I ask the questions?

69
00:07:34,913 --> 00:07:41,792
The questions are asked until just before the
broadcast kept in a bank vault.

70
00:07:41,960 --> 00:07:48,625
Here are both players in the
Geritol sponsored quiz '21'.

71
00:07:54,928 --> 00:07:59,256
Welcome. Mr. Peloubet,
I wish you a warm welcome.

72
00:07:59,432 --> 00:08:03,096
Everything kits in Queens, Herb?
- Fine, Mr. Barry.

73
00:08:03,268 --> 00:08:08,059
How is your wife?
- Good. Nice of you to ask.

74
00:08:08,230 --> 00:08:11,847
The questions are increasing
in difficulty...

75
00:08:12,025 --> 00:08:16,982
My wife has no bad blood
more thanks to Geritol.

76
00:08:17,154 --> 00:08:18,482
Nice.

77
00:08:19,155 --> 00:08:21,728
I vouch for this product

78
00:08:21,907 --> 00:08:24,777
Our sponsor would like to hear that.

79
00:08:25,076 --> 00:08:31,196
I thank Geritol for being a poor one
giving ex-conscript the chance...

80
00:08:31,373 --> 00:08:34,658
to follow a course of study.

81
00:08:36,627 --> 00:08:39,414
He could be better on the radio.

82
00:08:43,758 --> 00:08:46,295
Stempel is rambling.
- He does sell.

83
00:08:46,426 --> 00:08:48,881
And the viewing figures?

84
00:08:49,053 --> 00:08:51,092
Stable.
- He has to go.

85
00:08:51,263 --> 00:08:53,635
An underdog does well.

86
00:08:53,807 --> 00:08:57,389
Especially in New York.
- Queens is not New York.

87
00:09:11,988 --> 00:09:16,565
Mr. Kintner please.
- Management office. Just a moment.

88
00:09:17,826 --> 00:09:21,276
They don't see each other and
just hear something...

89
00:09:21,453 --> 00:09:25,153
when I turn on the sound.
I do that now.

90
00:09:27,375 --> 00:09:29,367
Are you ready?

91
00:09:29,877 --> 00:09:32,996
Will turnover then drop?
- He wants to get rid of him.

92
00:09:34,172 --> 00:09:38,714
I think he's a bit
fancier candidate.

93
00:09:39,175 --> 00:09:42,092
Stempel is a perfectly normal boy.

94
00:09:42,261 --> 00:09:45,380
Like: 'You can become rich too'.

95
00:09:45,514 --> 00:09:48,086
With high viewing figures.
- Joke.

96
00:09:48,266 --> 00:09:50,721
I'm just passing it on.

97
00:09:55,063 --> 00:09:58,762
Everyone knows the journey
Paul Revere.

98
00:09:58,941 --> 00:10:03,103
For 11 points: How many lanterns
were hanging in the Old North church?

99
00:10:03,277 --> 00:10:08,271
Whose horse was it?
Was it a mare or a stallion?

100
00:10:08,406 --> 00:10:10,778
And what was the horse's name?

101
00:10:11,492 --> 00:10:15,026
Air conditioning off.
- Tommy, air conditioning off.

102
00:10:28,047 --> 00:10:29,955
Control room.

103
00:10:30,423 --> 00:10:34,883
Just a moment. Then, Kintner for you
on the line.

104
00:10:36,678 --> 00:10:41,553
Can the third question be last?
- Naturally.

105
00:10:42,808 --> 00:10:47,801
The sign was: One for land,
two for by sea.

106
00:10:47,979 --> 00:10:51,596
So there were two lanterns hanging
in church.

107
00:10:51,773 --> 00:10:55,355
Fine. Who rode with it?

108
00:10:55,526 --> 00:10:58,610
Dawes and Prescott.

109
00:11:01,906 --> 00:11:06,117
This book shows the difference
between man and woman...

110
00:11:06,284 --> 00:11:11,526
is 38 pages. Only quote
if I did it myself.

111
00:11:11,705 --> 00:11:16,117
Eisenhower would be dead.
- How do they see that about him?

112
00:11:16,250 --> 00:11:20,199
Be careful like Dorothy about politics
starts.

113
00:11:21,129 --> 00:11:25,458
Sorry I'm so late.
There are no taxis available.

114
00:11:25,633 --> 00:11:27,791
Eisenhower is dead.

115
00:11:27,968 --> 00:11:33,341
I attended your lectures on...
Hawthorne and Sin in America.

116
00:11:33,514 --> 00:11:37,890
It changed my life.
- Hawthorne or sin?

117
00:11:38,017 --> 00:11:41,018
Would you like my unmarried son?
meet ?

118
00:11:41,186 --> 00:11:42,894
Where is he?

119
00:11:43,021 --> 00:11:46,935
That's fine too, Herb.
Three more answers.

120
00:11:47,108 --> 00:11:51,105
Are you his son?
-Charlie. Nice to meet you.

121
00:11:51,278 --> 00:11:53,649
Elizabeth. More pleasant.

122
00:11:53,905 --> 00:11:57,522
It was a mare.
- How did he know that?

123
00:11:57,741 --> 00:11:59,401
Here you are.

124
00:11:59,576 --> 00:12:02,492
We're leaving.
If you want to ride along...

125
00:12:02,661 --> 00:12:07,571
Have you ever seen a quiz like this?
'The 64000 Question' or '21'.

126
00:12:07,749 --> 00:12:11,580
Hopefully they ask for the meaning
of life.

127
00:12:11,752 --> 00:12:13,376
And finally:

128
00:12:13,545 --> 00:12:18,538
Who lent Paul Revere his horse?
for that important trip?

129
00:12:18,799 --> 00:12:20,590
Who was that?

130
00:12:20,717 --> 00:12:23,801
I want to hear the answer now.

131
00:12:23,928 --> 00:12:28,055
Give him his way. I don't want to
talking to advertising guys.

132
00:12:28,223 --> 00:12:32,516
What now?
- You're a producer. Produce.

133
00:12:39,273 --> 00:12:41,479
Herbie has to go.

134
00:12:42,109 --> 00:12:44,729
Deacon John Larkin ?

135
00:12:44,861 --> 00:12:47,777
That gives you eleven points.

136
00:12:53,576 --> 00:12:59,114
Relax for a moment.
Just a message from our sponsor.

137
00:13:02,041 --> 00:13:05,705
Friends, how was your day
today ?

138
00:13:05,877 --> 00:13:08,961
Were you still fit when you got up?
and vital...

139
00:13:09,129 --> 00:13:14,205
but already exhausted in the afternoon?
Are you having less fun than before?

140
00:13:15,551 --> 00:13:18,836
Better than the subway, huh?
- So what.

141
00:13:32,272 --> 00:13:34,395
You were great, Herbie!

142
00:13:37,360 --> 00:13:39,186
All right!

143
00:13:39,403 --> 00:13:41,442
The crowd loved you!

144
00:13:41,613 --> 00:13:45,147
Think of me. I have too
thought of you.

145
00:13:48,285 --> 00:13:51,368
You looked good.

146
00:13:51,871 --> 00:13:55,702
Had played for eleven points
at the movies.

147
00:13:57,750 --> 00:14:02,376
Of course I looked.
- The rich genius is home!

148
00:14:02,546 --> 00:14:05,499
Just on TV, just like everyone else.

149
00:14:06,299 --> 00:14:10,295
You were great.
- I want to dance. Dance with me.

150
00:14:15,180 --> 00:14:18,134
Why 8 points about film,
Mom asks.

151
00:14:18,308 --> 00:14:23,467
Because I know more about
nagging mothers-in-law. Hang up.

152
00:14:25,230 --> 00:14:28,230
Steve Allen can't call me right now.

153
00:14:28,399 --> 00:14:32,266
I have to hang up. No, really.

154
00:14:34,028 --> 00:14:37,646
Nice, you know. My dad has your suit
paid.

155
00:14:37,823 --> 00:14:41,322
His funeral suit.
- Like the suit was killing him.

156
00:14:41,493 --> 00:14:45,074
Enright likes it
standing awkwardly.

157
00:14:45,245 --> 00:14:47,321
That's how you do it too.

158
00:14:47,497 --> 00:14:50,782
Now everyone recognizes me on the street.

159
00:14:51,167 --> 00:14:55,578
What first repelled them in me,
attracts them now.

160
00:14:55,754 --> 00:14:57,580
Because I know everything.

161
00:14:57,838 --> 00:15:01,337
You should be my parents
worship.

162
00:15:01,508 --> 00:15:03,880
You worship in India.

163
00:15:04,052 --> 00:15:09,674
Without them you would be in your underwear.
- That's going to change.

164
00:15:10,432 --> 00:15:12,388
What do you mean ?

165
00:15:12,558 --> 00:15:14,681
Should I take crowns?

166
00:15:17,771 --> 00:15:21,767
What's going to change, Herbert?
- Everything.

167
00:15:23,817 --> 00:15:25,524
For us.

168
00:15:26,778 --> 00:15:29,066
What did you think then?

169
00:15:29,530 --> 00:15:35,483
Toby, the tube is the largest
invention since the printing press.

170
00:15:35,659 --> 00:15:37,901
And I am a star.

171
00:15:39,204 --> 00:15:44,908
We don't have your mother's money anymore
necessary. She should leave you alone.

172
00:15:47,043 --> 00:15:50,992
Will you please dance with me now?

173
00:16:11,854 --> 00:16:14,345
After a disagreement with his boss...

174
00:16:14,523 --> 00:16:19,480
became Ulysses Grant for some time
held in custody in 1862.

175
00:16:19,652 --> 00:16:22,901
Who led the federal army then?

176
00:16:23,071 --> 00:16:27,531
I know that. General H.W. Halleck.
- Fine.

177
00:16:27,783 --> 00:16:32,076
Who was Sebastian Cabot
and from what country did he come?

178
00:16:32,245 --> 00:16:35,743
A Spanish explorer.

179
00:16:35,914 --> 00:16:37,194
Fine.

180
00:16:37,874 --> 00:16:39,368
Who is that man?

181
00:16:42,127 --> 00:16:47,168
Charles Van Doren.
- From the famous Van Dorens?

182
00:16:48,799 --> 00:16:51,171
Does he want Tic-Tac-Dough?

183
00:16:51,510 --> 00:16:54,178
Meriwether Lewis.
- Good.

184
00:16:57,306 --> 00:17:01,255
This is it. I found the right one.

185
00:17:02,143 --> 00:17:04,016
I have it.

186
00:17:06,521 --> 00:17:07,684
Hebbes.

187
00:17:07,814 --> 00:17:15,689
I started doing astrophysics,
but that also came to nothing.

188
00:17:15,862 --> 00:17:20,653
I went to Paris and wrote
a novel about patrocide.

189
00:17:20,824 --> 00:17:23,611
A boy who kills his father.

190
00:17:23,785 --> 00:17:28,991
My dad thought it was very good.
But it was mediocre.

191
00:17:29,164 --> 00:17:33,659
Carl Van Doren is your father?
- My uncle. My father's name is Mark.

192
00:17:33,876 --> 00:17:39,877
He teaches... I also teach
Columbia. Literature, just like Dad.

193
00:17:40,047 --> 00:17:43,795
Nice.
- Can I ask you something, professor?

194
00:17:43,967 --> 00:17:45,924
I am a lecturer.

195
00:17:46,094 --> 00:17:49,841
How much do you earn?
- $86 per week.

196
00:17:50,013 --> 00:17:54,176
Do you know what Bozo the clown earns?
- It's unique.

197
00:17:54,350 --> 00:18:00,601
No, to each his own. But a salary
for someone like you...

198
00:18:00,772 --> 00:18:02,764
$86.

199
00:18:02,940 --> 00:18:07,648
Do you want to start a family?
- From $86 a week?

200
00:18:07,902 --> 00:18:10,855
Education is already in the doldrums.

201
00:18:11,030 --> 00:18:14,065
That's a national problem.

202
00:18:14,240 --> 00:18:16,695
You want Tic-Tac-Dough?

203
00:18:16,867 --> 00:18:20,698
I like games like that, yes.

204
00:18:20,870 --> 00:18:23,278
Would you like to be in '21'?

205
00:18:25,457 --> 00:18:28,908
Also a show from Dan.
- You're perfect for it.

206
00:18:29,085 --> 00:18:31,291
Especially for the youth.

207
00:18:31,462 --> 00:18:35,126
And what about Herbert Stempel?
- Herbie's doing great.

208
00:18:35,298 --> 00:18:37,753
But not among the youth.

209
00:18:37,925 --> 00:18:41,175
Would you be a Jew with hair like that?
want to be?

210
00:18:41,345 --> 00:18:46,586
I wanted to be Joe DiMaggio.
- Me, too. Especially with his income.

211
00:18:46,807 --> 00:18:50,175
The country wants an intellectual
Joe DiMaggio.

212
00:18:50,352 --> 00:18:54,479
With money and women, but now
thanks to his brains.

213
00:18:54,647 --> 00:18:56,686
You're right.

214
00:18:57,399 --> 00:19:00,316
Well, what should we do now?

215
00:19:02,403 --> 00:19:04,608
I can try.

216
00:19:08,407 --> 00:19:13,317
A half-student attempt
won't be enough.

217
00:19:13,494 --> 00:19:19,199
Stamp is very good.
- Tic-Tac-Dough seemed simpler to me.

218
00:19:19,374 --> 00:19:25,458
And what if we let you join in?
to '21' with questions you know.

219
00:19:25,629 --> 00:19:29,293
This morning's test questions
for example.

220
00:19:30,091 --> 00:19:32,759
What do you mean?
- I'm thinking out loud.

221
00:19:32,968 --> 00:19:36,716
Aren't the questions in a safe?
- More or less.

222
00:19:36,888 --> 00:19:41,347
You do want to win, don't you?
- In an honest way.

223
00:19:41,516 --> 00:19:45,762
Gregory Peck doesn't either
all scenes themselves.

224
00:19:45,936 --> 00:19:48,474
Eisenhower didn't write his book.

225
00:19:48,647 --> 00:19:51,315
You know those answers anyway.

226
00:19:51,482 --> 00:19:56,060
It would be weird if I...
participant would know everything.

227
00:19:56,236 --> 00:19:59,320
You are a highly educated man.

228
00:20:00,322 --> 00:20:03,276
What would Kant think of this?

229
00:20:04,075 --> 00:20:08,783
He wouldn't mind.
- It's good for education.

230
00:20:08,954 --> 00:20:14,292
40 million people watch '21'.
It remains between us.

231
00:20:23,382 --> 00:20:25,872
It doesn't seem right to me.

232
00:20:26,468 --> 00:20:28,792
I have to say no.

233
00:20:30,971 --> 00:20:33,343
It was just an idea.

234
00:20:35,850 --> 00:20:38,221
Was that part of the test?

235
00:20:48,526 --> 00:20:50,815
So you're going to try it?

236
00:20:50,987 --> 00:20:56,110
But not in the way
that we discussed.

237
00:20:56,282 --> 00:20:59,567
No, it will be pure coffee.

238
00:20:59,743 --> 00:21:03,443
Come take a look on Monday
at the program.

239
00:21:03,621 --> 00:21:06,112
We are looking forward to it.

240
00:21:06,290 --> 00:21:08,531
Goodbye.

241
00:21:16,214 --> 00:21:18,372
Boys.

242
00:21:18,550 --> 00:21:21,834
Who is that?
-Charles Van Doren.

243
00:21:22,052 --> 00:21:25,052
From the famous Van Dorens?

244
00:21:25,388 --> 00:21:28,057
He wants Tic-Tac-Dough.

245
00:21:29,600 --> 00:21:32,802
Why does a guy like that want to be in a quiz?

246
00:21:35,938 --> 00:21:38,891
Goodwin, Audit Committee.

247
00:21:39,065 --> 00:21:43,975
I'm from the Congressional Committee
Government regulation.

248
00:21:44,153 --> 00:21:50,320
Your railway rates from start
1954 are missing from your statement.

249
00:21:50,533 --> 00:21:53,105
They're pinching him, Dickie.

250
00:21:53,285 --> 00:21:55,360
Start talking about Harvard.

251
00:21:55,536 --> 00:21:58,702
I excelled at Harvard, you know.

252
00:21:59,665 --> 00:22:01,372
43 seconds.

253
00:22:01,541 --> 00:22:04,660
Railways.
That's political dynamite.

254
00:22:04,877 --> 00:22:08,660
A mistake.
- That's what our committee is for.

255
00:22:08,838 --> 00:22:12,882
Next week is fine.
I'll send you a reminder.

256
00:22:13,050 --> 00:22:17,510
It looks a lot like a summons.
Thank you too.

257
00:22:17,679 --> 00:22:22,920
Dick, in about 15 years you will have the
Railroad Commission on its knees

258
00:22:23,141 --> 00:22:26,011
If there are still trains.

259
00:22:26,185 --> 00:22:29,102
You would still be there.

260
00:22:29,271 --> 00:22:31,263
Long toes.

261
00:22:32,607 --> 00:22:37,232
You have 10 points, Herb. The
category is explorers.

262
00:22:37,777 --> 00:22:42,237
A question for 11 points.
- You take a chance.

263
00:22:42,406 --> 00:22:47,316
I will mention four areas.
Who discovered it?

264
00:22:47,493 --> 00:22:50,944
Newfoundland.
-John Cabot.

265
00:22:51,997 --> 00:22:55,863
Nice to write, I see.
- Go away.

266
00:22:56,042 --> 00:23:00,038
Not with a cigar in the bedroom.
Out.

267
00:23:00,420 --> 00:23:04,796
There is a TV in the bedroom,
but no cigar.

268
00:23:09,844 --> 00:23:15,217
I had to see the chairman today
come. My big chance?

269
00:23:15,390 --> 00:23:20,727
I have to write his speech
for the Arkansas Kiwanis Club.

270
00:23:20,894 --> 00:23:23,978
You're good at that. Can we come too?

271
00:23:24,147 --> 00:23:30,231
That work is so boring. I just feel
a caged racehorse.

272
00:23:30,443 --> 00:23:33,527
You turned down that job on Wall Street.

273
00:23:34,863 --> 00:23:39,939
Money isn't everything either.
- You started talking about a Chrysler.

274
00:23:40,117 --> 00:23:43,699
Who discovered Mozambique?

275
00:23:43,870 --> 00:23:46,242
Vasco da Gama.

276
00:23:47,915 --> 00:23:53,703
I'm going to take a quiz. Can I
come into my own bedroom.

277
00:23:53,878 --> 00:23:56,997
It's just a job. No sex.

278
00:23:59,341 --> 00:24:01,167
Vasco da Gama?

279
00:24:01,342 --> 00:24:03,381
Great.

280
00:24:03,552 --> 00:24:06,671
Right, Barry?
- I'm busy, Dan.

281
00:24:06,930 --> 00:24:10,594
Your new opponent
Charles Van Doren.

282
00:24:11,642 --> 00:24:14,132
I'm terrified of you.

283
00:24:14,310 --> 00:24:16,053
Afraid of me?

284
00:24:24,693 --> 00:24:27,563
More wine?
- Thank you, Dan.

285
00:24:32,199 --> 00:24:36,777
Hats off. Does the steak taste good?
- Delicious.

286
00:24:37,620 --> 00:24:41,913
I have today's ratings
viewed.

287
00:24:42,207 --> 00:24:45,741
It's crazy, but you're ceiling.

288
00:24:46,043 --> 00:24:49,708
Ceilings? What kind of word is that?

289
00:24:49,880 --> 00:24:53,295
Ceilings? That's what we say when you...

290
00:24:53,466 --> 00:24:56,916
Don't they want me anymore?
- Not your personal...

291
00:24:57,094 --> 00:25:01,801
Should I take crowns?
- They've seen you win enough.

292
00:25:02,056 --> 00:25:04,973
Do they want me to lose now?

293
00:25:05,141 --> 00:25:07,098
That's how it goes.

294
00:25:07,268 --> 00:25:10,885
Nobody wanted to for 12 years
that Joe Louis lost.

295
00:25:11,063 --> 00:25:13,102
Think about education.

296
00:25:13,273 --> 00:25:19,890
I've been waiting 29 years for this. Must
I now lose for education?

297
00:25:20,070 --> 00:25:22,856
Don't lose, but cooperate.

298
00:25:23,030 --> 00:25:26,363
Then let me play fair.
- Gently.

299
00:25:26,533 --> 00:25:28,525
Name a number.

300
00:25:28,701 --> 00:25:32,828
Name a random number.
- twenty-three?

301
00:25:32,996 --> 00:25:38,072
Beethoven wrote his first sonata.
In 1923, Bentley broke the record...

302
00:25:38,292 --> 00:25:42,289
as a pitcher. The human egg
contains 23 chromosomes.

303
00:25:42,462 --> 00:25:47,621
The sperm too. The 23rd president
was Harrison. Asian countries...

304
00:25:47,799 --> 00:25:51,927
That Revere horse.
You never knew his name.

305
00:25:52,094 --> 00:25:55,344
Her name. It was a mare,
do you remember?

306
00:25:55,514 --> 00:26:00,851
You lose if I say so.
That's how it was agreed.

307
00:26:01,018 --> 00:26:04,102
Then I would have preferred to lose straight away.

308
00:26:04,270 --> 00:26:08,219
That fits into my life.
But why now?

309
00:26:08,399 --> 00:26:12,265
Look ahead. The television
has the future.

310
00:26:12,443 --> 00:26:16,275
Think about that.
- Can I be on a TV panel?

311
00:26:16,447 --> 00:26:19,566
To settle. I'll do my best.

312
00:26:19,741 --> 00:26:22,907
First you have to meet someone
start talking.

313
00:26:23,077 --> 00:26:25,697
My psychiatrist. I pay.

314
00:26:25,870 --> 00:26:28,705
I'd like to do it on a panel.

315
00:26:28,873 --> 00:26:31,908
Witty, breath. Sort of like Bill
Cullen.

316
00:26:32,084 --> 00:26:37,373
The final question becomes which movie
won the Oscar in 1955.

317
00:26:37,546 --> 00:26:40,997
You say On The Waterfront.

318
00:26:41,758 --> 00:26:45,885
No, you can't do that.
That's Marty.

319
00:26:46,053 --> 00:26:50,512
I've seen Marty 30 times.
I won't know such a question?

320
00:26:50,681 --> 00:26:54,630
A simple question. That makes it
all the more tragic.

321
00:26:56,061 --> 00:26:58,516
Don't get so excited.

322
00:26:58,688 --> 00:27:03,064
Let me lose with a question
about physics.

323
00:27:03,274 --> 00:27:05,979
Come on, this is humiliating.

324
00:27:06,152 --> 00:27:09,734
For 70 grand you can be humiliated
become.

325
00:27:22,247 --> 00:27:24,868
The captain of the Mayflower?

326
00:27:25,041 --> 00:27:27,413
What year?
- 1620.

327
00:27:29,378 --> 00:27:31,750
After this back to Mr. Moto.

328
00:27:31,922 --> 00:27:37,259
Will Herbert Stempel be the first to learn more
than win 100,000 on television?

329
00:27:37,426 --> 00:27:42,170
No, Stempel is not going to win.
Stamp is going to lose.

330
00:27:42,346 --> 00:27:44,919
The quiz isn't until tomorrow, mind you.

331
00:27:45,098 --> 00:27:48,467
Who bought Manhattan from
the Indians?

332
00:27:48,643 --> 00:27:52,260
What year? For how much money?
-$24.

333
00:27:52,437 --> 00:27:55,224
This week in '21'!

334
00:27:56,732 --> 00:28:00,681
Watch Stamp to the Lions
is fed.

335
00:28:00,861 --> 00:28:05,687
And how Charles Van Doren for it
first eat kosher in '21'.

336
00:28:05,864 --> 00:28:09,149
Why aren't you dressed yet?

337
00:28:09,325 --> 00:28:14,152
The child must learn how deep
a person can sink.

338
00:28:14,329 --> 00:28:16,902
The tribes of the Iroquois...

339
00:28:17,081 --> 00:28:20,117
$24. First the Indians,
then us.

340
00:28:20,292 --> 00:28:21,870
What do you have?

341
00:28:22,044 --> 00:28:27,962
Indians. Columbus thought so
was in India. White man's fault.

342
00:28:28,132 --> 00:28:30,918
Leave him his own ulcer
get.

343
00:28:31,092 --> 00:28:34,626
I wanted to play drums.
- The best film of 1955?

344
00:28:34,804 --> 00:28:38,088
Marty. What's bothering you?

345
00:28:38,306 --> 00:28:41,639
Go do your homework in your room.

346
00:28:41,809 --> 00:28:47,431
Take your books with you.
You do homework with your books.

347
00:28:52,067 --> 00:28:55,103
They want me to lose.

348
00:28:56,570 --> 00:28:59,903
When asked which film won the Oscar
won in 1955...

349
00:29:00,073 --> 00:29:03,192
I need On The Waterfront
say.

350
00:29:03,367 --> 00:29:07,613
Dump me with a question
that every child knows.

351
00:29:09,455 --> 00:29:12,456
Aren't the questions in a safe?

352
00:29:12,624 --> 00:29:18,163
Why no gas in my cabin?
- They can't do this.

353
00:29:18,337 --> 00:29:23,045
Apparently this is not the question
in a bank vault.

354
00:29:23,216 --> 00:29:26,833
Why ?
- How should I know?

355
00:29:28,762 --> 00:29:33,506
Let them suffocate. Hey, Marty.
- I already said yes.

356
00:29:33,682 --> 00:29:38,094
Let them burst. Then they just ask
something you really don't know.

357
00:29:38,311 --> 00:29:40,469
If they can.

358
00:29:41,980 --> 00:29:46,688
You are Herbert Stempel.
What can they do to you?

359
00:29:52,155 --> 00:29:54,776
Yes, what can they do?

360
00:29:55,282 --> 00:29:56,907
Up my back.

361
00:29:59,494 --> 00:30:02,827
Speak to him as often as possible
with Jack on.

362
00:30:07,792 --> 00:30:09,998
I'm Jack Barry.

363
00:30:10,169 --> 00:30:13,003
Good evening, I'm Jack Barry.

364
00:30:13,171 --> 00:30:15,459
Good evening, I'm Jack Barry.

365
00:30:15,715 --> 00:30:18,917
Broadcast starts in ten...

366
00:30:28,016 --> 00:30:30,257
Good evening, I'm Jack Barry.

367
00:30:30,435 --> 00:30:36,187
Geritol, America's Best
health drink, presents '21'.

368
00:30:36,356 --> 00:30:39,025
Mr. Charles Van Doren...

369
00:30:41,443 --> 00:30:42,937
Van Doren?

370
00:30:44,362 --> 00:30:46,105
The son of ?

371
00:30:46,280 --> 00:30:50,775
Are you related to the famous
author Mark Van Doren ?

372
00:30:50,950 --> 00:30:55,861
That's my father. Him and my uncle
Carl won the Pulitzer Prize.

373
00:30:56,038 --> 00:31:00,414
Dorothy Van Doren, van
The Country Wife, is my mother.

374
00:31:00,583 --> 00:31:05,160
Herb, now you know a little more.
You have $69,500.

375
00:31:05,337 --> 00:31:10,044
Do you want that money now or do you want it?
the stakes against him?

376
00:31:15,553 --> 00:31:18,304
A difficult decision.

377
00:31:19,389 --> 00:31:21,761
I'll take a chance.

378
00:31:22,934 --> 00:31:25,969
Will Herbie cooperate?

379
00:31:26,853 --> 00:31:29,522
The third question last.

380
00:31:29,689 --> 00:31:34,397
Atahualpa was then the leader
of the Incas.

381
00:31:34,568 --> 00:31:37,770
William Allen White?
- Good.

382
00:31:37,945 --> 00:31:39,522
Question three last.

383
00:31:39,696 --> 00:31:43,147
His fourth wife was
Anna of Cleves.

384
00:31:43,324 --> 00:31:47,403
He divorced Katharina.
- He divorced her.

385
00:31:47,578 --> 00:31:50,993
He beheaded Anna Boleyn.
- They all died.

386
00:31:51,164 --> 00:31:54,449
Herb Stempel leads with 18 points
by 10.

387
00:31:54,625 --> 00:32:00,377
Herb, the category is movies.
For how many points?

388
00:32:00,588 --> 00:32:02,876
For three points.

389
00:32:03,632 --> 00:32:09,254
Which film won the Oscar in 1955?

390
00:32:15,432 --> 00:32:17,092
Marty.

391
00:32:25,690 --> 00:32:28,181
The best movie...

392
00:32:42,829 --> 00:32:44,702
Doesn't he know that?

393
00:32:46,498 --> 00:32:49,333
I'll warn you when the time is up.

394
00:32:56,422 --> 00:32:59,127
I don't know anymore.

395
00:33:02,219 --> 00:33:06,595
Don't want to take a chance?
- Just a moment.

396
00:33:13,352 --> 00:33:16,021
You must answer now.

397
00:33:17,105 --> 00:33:19,311
The best movie...

398
00:33:23,610 --> 00:33:25,483
On The Waterfront.

399
00:33:27,071 --> 00:33:30,689
No, I'm sorry.
The answer is Marty.

400
00:33:35,703 --> 00:33:41,822
Marty got the Oscar
as the best film of 1955.

401
00:33:43,667 --> 00:33:45,992
Such a simple question.

402
00:33:46,169 --> 00:33:51,755
That costs you three points.
You go back to 15.

403
00:33:53,258 --> 00:33:56,128
Professor, the category is:

404
00:33:56,844 --> 00:34:01,719
The Civil War. For how much
points do you want to play?

405
00:34:02,015 --> 00:34:05,264
That's an extensive topic.

406
00:34:06,268 --> 00:34:09,850
All or nothing. For eleven points.

407
00:34:10,021 --> 00:34:14,232
Then you get to 21 and you are
the new champion.

408
00:34:14,441 --> 00:34:18,224
Ulysses Grant stood after disagreement
with his boss...

409
00:34:18,403 --> 00:34:22,446
under arrest for a short time
in 1862.

410
00:34:22,614 --> 00:34:27,489
Who was in command then?
about the Federal army?

411
00:34:32,622 --> 00:34:34,413
Tough question.

412
00:34:35,082 --> 00:34:37,489
He looks familiar.

413
00:34:43,922 --> 00:34:46,128
Would you like some more time?

414
00:34:51,511 --> 00:34:53,717
As much as possible.

415
00:35:02,478 --> 00:35:04,186
Do you know?

416
00:35:10,234 --> 00:35:13,400
Yes. General H.W. Halleck.

417
00:35:13,570 --> 00:35:18,361
You are our new champion!
You have $20,000!

418
00:35:20,951 --> 00:35:24,533
Come on, Herb.
Come on, professor.

419
00:35:25,329 --> 00:35:27,487
Exciting, huh?

420
00:35:32,293 --> 00:35:37,286
Ice cream for the professor. His gray
cells are red hot.

421
00:35:39,298 --> 00:35:43,165
Congratulations.
Professor Charles Van Doren.

422
00:35:43,427 --> 00:35:46,842
Amazing, the ready knowledge
of those guys.

423
00:35:47,013 --> 00:35:49,550
Tough questions.
- Oh...

424
00:35:49,723 --> 00:35:55,226
Get a secret phone number.
- He's drenched in sweat.

425
00:35:55,394 --> 00:35:57,885
A natural talent.
- Certainly.

426
00:35:58,063 --> 00:36:00,185
Does he have a girlfriend?

427
00:36:00,356 --> 00:36:02,847
I'll miss you, Herb. Real.

428
00:36:03,025 --> 00:36:07,437
With him we beat I Love Lucy.

429
00:36:07,612 --> 00:36:11,146
Absolute. Just a photo, George.

430
00:36:11,573 --> 00:36:15,191
This is Miles Bronfman,
NBC staffer.

431
00:36:16,494 --> 00:36:19,909
Happy, Charlie?
- Charlie, I just want to...

432
00:36:20,080 --> 00:36:22,784
My son studied with your father.

433
00:36:23,875 --> 00:36:28,832
Bill Henderson, our promoter.
- Congratulations. Sensational.

434
00:36:28,962 --> 00:36:31,535
Finally a decent intellectual.

435
00:36:31,756 --> 00:36:36,251
See you next week.
- I don't want to think about that yet.

436
00:36:38,803 --> 00:36:41,044
'Pure coffee'?

437
00:36:41,221 --> 00:36:46,262
Don't talk, it was great.
Have a drink at home.

438
00:36:46,684 --> 00:36:48,806
I take the stairs.

439
00:36:52,272 --> 00:36:55,722
He did it anyway.
- What would you do?

440
00:36:56,024 --> 00:37:00,650
Pretend I didn't know
that would also be unfair.

441
00:37:00,820 --> 00:37:03,310
And it's good for education.

442
00:37:03,489 --> 00:37:08,233
I also worked hard. I have
also entitled to $20,000.

443
00:37:08,409 --> 00:37:11,575
Good God, $20,000!

444
00:37:18,250 --> 00:37:24,287
The highest navigable lake
is Lake Titicaca.

445
00:37:24,463 --> 00:37:27,748
Lake Titicaca.
- Ten more points!

446
00:37:28,967 --> 00:37:36,296
Michel Montaigne wore a medallion
with the text 'What do I know?'

447
00:37:36,472 --> 00:37:40,421
Can I have Mr. Enright ?
- Unfortunately he is absent.

448
00:37:40,601 --> 00:37:45,345
Our current champion,
Mr. Charles Van Doren from New York.

449
00:37:45,521 --> 00:37:47,679
'21' BREAKS RECORD.

450
00:37:50,400 --> 00:37:54,527
Into the only free house
Greenwich Village.

451
00:37:55,821 --> 00:37:57,480
I'll take it.

452
00:37:57,697 --> 00:37:59,736
He's not in the office.

453
00:37:59,907 --> 00:38:03,441
I'm already calling before the seventeenth
times.

454
00:38:03,618 --> 00:38:07,366
William Pitt Sr.
- 21 points!

455
00:38:08,414 --> 00:38:11,035
RECORD VIEWING RATINGS NBC

456
00:38:11,208 --> 00:38:13,959
Laugh. Hold the bag up.

457
00:38:14,210 --> 00:38:17,127
Van Doren is extremely popular.

458
00:38:17,296 --> 00:38:22,040
Thousands of letters for the new one
hero, who already won 50000.

459
00:38:22,216 --> 00:38:24,789
Now for the check, Charlie.

460
00:38:25,135 --> 00:38:31,254
Is Mr. Enright there? With Herb Stamp.
If he doesn't call me soon...

461
00:38:31,432 --> 00:38:34,966
something happens.
Is that clear?

462
00:38:43,483 --> 00:38:47,230
Just say I'm different
go to Justice.

463
00:38:47,402 --> 00:38:50,319
I can play it hard too.

464
00:39:05,958 --> 00:39:08,164
OFFICER OF JUSTICE

465
00:39:08,335 --> 00:39:11,371
PRELIMINARY RESEARCH QUIZ

466
00:39:15,215 --> 00:39:17,587
Welcome to '21'.

467
00:39:23,639 --> 00:39:27,422
BRAIN COUNTER DOLLARS ON TV

468
00:39:27,558 --> 00:39:33,227
It was humiliating. Everyone knows
that I thought Marty was a good movie.

469
00:39:33,354 --> 00:39:36,390
I've seen it three times.

470
00:39:40,610 --> 00:39:43,943
You can go inside Mr. Enright.

471
00:39:48,491 --> 00:39:50,151
Sit down, Herb.

472
00:39:57,581 --> 00:40:03,784
I still have something to finish with you.
- And me with you.

473
00:40:03,961 --> 00:40:07,330
What you have at that hearing
said...

474
00:40:07,506 --> 00:40:11,633
hurt me.
That touched me deeply.

475
00:40:11,759 --> 00:40:14,925
It was the truth.
- You're starting again.

476
00:40:15,095 --> 00:40:17,502
You would help me.

477
00:40:17,680 --> 00:40:22,388
I want that too, but you have that
now made impossible.

478
00:40:22,559 --> 00:40:26,390
Do you want my apology?
- Sign a statement.

479
00:40:26,562 --> 00:40:30,939
What kind of explanation?
- Who exonerates me.

480
00:40:31,107 --> 00:40:33,265
And that panel?

481
00:40:33,443 --> 00:40:37,570
That's what I mean. I have my best
done for you.

482
00:40:37,738 --> 00:40:41,604
Your name is on a list.
- Is that all?

483
00:40:41,782 --> 00:40:44,451
Everything runs through NBC.

484
00:40:44,618 --> 00:40:50,287
NBC bought you for two million.
But people looked for me.

485
00:40:50,456 --> 00:40:54,832
'A friend in 50 million families'.

486
00:40:55,001 --> 00:40:58,583
'The whole family was looking forward to it
to his coming.'

487
00:40:58,754 --> 00:41:01,161
I've been a friend too.

488
00:41:01,339 --> 00:41:04,458
Life is unfair.
- For me.

489
00:41:04,633 --> 00:41:08,630
Not for Van Doren.
He ignored me afterwards.

490
00:41:08,803 --> 00:41:13,132
More shows to come.
- I need the money, Dan.

491
00:41:13,307 --> 00:41:16,592
Then where did it go?

492
00:41:16,768 --> 00:41:19,341
It's invested. Fixed.

493
00:41:19,520 --> 00:41:23,184
Talk to your stockbroker.
- No.

494
00:41:23,356 --> 00:41:28,183
It's a bookmaker. He's sitting
in Florida, a growth area.

495
00:41:28,360 --> 00:41:31,396
All your money going to a shady guy?

496
00:41:31,571 --> 00:41:37,690
I am entitled to it. I have to go back
on TV. What about that list?

497
00:41:37,867 --> 00:41:42,908
I had 45 names. You were there
the three deleted.

498
00:41:44,080 --> 00:41:49,240
That bag comes first Time and
I can't be on a TV panel?

499
00:41:49,418 --> 00:41:52,371
You can warm up the crowd.

500
00:41:52,545 --> 00:41:57,337
$50 a week.
- I should be at the forefront of Time!

501
00:41:57,508 --> 00:41:59,381
Just sign.

502
00:41:59,551 --> 00:42:02,586
Van Doren knows nothing without you.

503
00:42:02,762 --> 00:42:04,718
Just sign.

504
00:42:04,888 --> 00:42:08,719
Lies. What does it matter?
- You'll get a chance.

505
00:42:08,891 --> 00:42:14,893
I want to be on a panel,
otherwise I'll expose you, asshole!

506
00:42:15,063 --> 00:42:16,854
And that bag of Van Doren!

507
00:42:17,023 --> 00:42:21,980
I'm going to tell you it's fake.
'21' is a crossed card.

508
00:42:23,277 --> 00:42:27,226
Then comes his mugshot
at the forefront of Time.

509
00:42:29,908 --> 00:42:31,532
What was that?

510
00:42:34,828 --> 00:42:38,528
JUDGE SEALS RESULT
RESEARCH QUIZ

511
00:42:38,915 --> 00:42:43,410
'Stones thrown at Nixon's car
in Caracas.'

512
00:42:43,585 --> 00:42:47,119
Does the New York Times also report that?
- Just about.

513
00:42:47,296 --> 00:42:52,372
Read the Times in Washington?
- The Times is authoritative.

514
00:42:54,802 --> 00:42:57,553
That's what Dick wants to become.

515
00:42:57,721 --> 00:43:03,509
'Despite the great distance
a Venezuelan hit Nixon...

516
00:43:03,684 --> 00:43:07,977
with an onion.'
A good pitcher is never gone.

517
00:43:08,145 --> 00:43:10,636
A hearing on quizzes.

518
00:43:10,814 --> 00:43:14,265
A flawless throw with an onion.

519
00:43:14,442 --> 00:43:17,359
Discovered something?
- There is secrecy.

520
00:43:17,528 --> 00:43:19,816
So nothing.
- What do you mean?

521
00:43:19,988 --> 00:43:24,696
If something was wrong, the audience had it
already heard it.

522
00:43:24,867 --> 00:43:28,994
Then why does it become a secret?
held ?

523
00:43:33,290 --> 00:43:35,531
Secrecy is illogical.

524
00:43:35,667 --> 00:43:39,000
A local issue.
- It's TV.

525
00:43:41,088 --> 00:43:45,583
The broadcasters are also included
our committee.

526
00:43:45,716 --> 00:43:48,004
Why ? The case is closed.

527
00:43:48,135 --> 00:43:54,503
We're going to denounce television
set. The whole country will know.

528
00:43:57,309 --> 00:44:00,428
What do you know?
- Something's wrong.

529
00:44:00,603 --> 00:44:03,722
And I will find it too.

530
00:44:05,190 --> 00:44:10,645
The broadcasters, the pharmaceuticals
industry, cosmetics...

531
00:44:10,861 --> 00:44:15,071
Big game. Go well prepared
on the hunt.

532
00:44:15,239 --> 00:44:16,733
It smells.

533
00:44:16,907 --> 00:44:21,449
Let me go to New York
to poke around.

534
00:44:21,827 --> 00:44:26,073
This is not a sweets trip
to go to Broadway.

535
00:44:26,248 --> 00:44:29,912
You get a week for it
your research.

536
00:44:31,251 --> 00:44:35,580
A secret preliminary investigation
get public. Well...

537
00:44:35,755 --> 00:44:38,791
I don't know how that works if...

538
00:44:39,216 --> 00:44:42,584
There's something here. Just read.

539
00:44:42,802 --> 00:44:47,961
No preliminary investigation has been sealed
in New York since 1869.

540
00:44:51,058 --> 00:44:55,007
I have looked at the arguments
for your request.

541
00:44:55,228 --> 00:44:57,979
It's about honor and good name.

542
00:44:58,147 --> 00:45:01,432
With this seal
I protect people...

543
00:45:01,608 --> 00:45:06,269
that haphazardly by an unstable man
be accused.

544
00:45:06,445 --> 00:45:10,394
Partly because of federal legal
aspects...

545
00:45:10,573 --> 00:45:14,273
I reject the request
from your commission.

546
00:45:21,540 --> 00:45:26,285
Office of Mr. Enright.
Mr. Enright, Judge Schweitzer.

547
00:45:43,099 --> 00:45:48,721
Mrs. Mitchell, I am
Richard Goodwin of the government.

548
00:45:48,895 --> 00:45:53,223
We're doing a study on quizzes.
Can I ask you something?

549
00:45:53,398 --> 00:45:55,474
I have visitors.

550
00:45:56,526 --> 00:45:59,194
It will only take a moment.

551
00:45:59,737 --> 00:46:02,690
How long have you been playing?

552
00:46:02,864 --> 00:46:07,904
About three weeks.
- Were you given a gag order?

553
00:46:11,746 --> 00:46:17,083
The Today Show with Dave
Garroway and J. Fred Muggs.

554
00:46:17,250 --> 00:46:22,919
Guests: The Aga Khan, Lyle Goodhue,
inventor of the aerosol can...

555
00:46:23,088 --> 00:46:26,254
and quiz champion
Charles Van Doren.

556
00:46:30,927 --> 00:46:33,881
Just chat, I'll get started.

557
00:46:34,055 --> 00:46:37,505
See you later, Mr. Muggs. Good morning.

558
00:46:39,142 --> 00:46:42,973
Good morning, Charlie.
How are you doing?

559
00:46:43,145 --> 00:46:47,272
There are many more people outside
than normal.

560
00:46:47,440 --> 00:46:49,765
How long?
- Nine weeks.

561
00:46:49,942 --> 00:46:52,397
Your profit?
- $93,000.

562
00:46:52,569 --> 00:46:58,273
That's 10 grand a week. Although it
program expired last week.

563
00:46:58,449 --> 00:47:01,947
The TV pays well, but it is
no permanent job.

564
00:47:02,118 --> 00:47:05,118
My contract is also ending.

565
00:47:05,287 --> 00:47:07,529
You're writing a book.

566
00:47:07,706 --> 00:47:11,619
Lincoln's Commando. I hope
that it catches on.

567
00:47:11,792 --> 00:47:14,911
Something for Honest Abe, a quiz?

568
00:47:15,670 --> 00:47:17,330
Honest Abe ?

569
00:47:17,922 --> 00:47:22,168
He would do well.
Especially in your program.

570
00:47:22,425 --> 00:47:24,465
Undoubtedly.

571
00:47:35,769 --> 00:47:40,477
We're here.
- Just tie my shoelace.

572
00:48:11,839 --> 00:48:14,080
Where's the monkey?

573
00:48:15,258 --> 00:48:19,421
What faith does Thomas Merton have?
- Catholic.

574
00:48:21,388 --> 00:48:24,720
Are you coming for my consultation hours?

575
00:48:24,890 --> 00:48:29,468
Goodwin. Clark Byse would call you.
- He didn't.

576
00:48:29,644 --> 00:48:31,885
He gave me your name.

577
00:48:32,063 --> 00:48:35,347
Stockbroker?
- Worse: lawyer.

578
00:48:35,524 --> 00:48:40,019
He helped me with contracts.
- Me with my backhand.

579
00:48:40,194 --> 00:48:45,946
I'm from the audit committee.
- All those stickers. I look like a piece.

580
00:48:46,115 --> 00:48:49,946
The committee checks
also the TV broadcasters.

581
00:48:52,203 --> 00:48:54,824
Sorry. Please sit down.

582
00:48:58,792 --> 00:49:02,491
You sure were good at Harvard.
Clark is picky.

583
00:49:02,670 --> 00:49:07,295
I was the best of my year.
- You say it with disgust.

584
00:49:07,465 --> 00:49:10,038
Did you do an internship?
- At Frankfurter.

585
00:49:10,217 --> 00:49:13,585
I like your job better. Literature.

586
00:49:13,762 --> 00:49:17,379
If I was the best, I'd leave it
tattooing

587
00:49:17,556 --> 00:49:21,304
What brings you to New York?
Literature ?

588
00:49:21,476 --> 00:49:26,267
You never have anything strange
noticed that quiz?

589
00:49:28,565 --> 00:49:33,107
Something suspicious?
- Besides being popular?

590
00:49:33,318 --> 00:49:37,979
Maybe you can help me.
We are on the same wavelength.

591
00:49:38,155 --> 00:49:40,610
Sure. I'm happy to help you.

592
00:49:40,782 --> 00:49:44,945
I'm following your lectures
the Romanticism.

593
00:49:45,119 --> 00:49:50,409
Just because you're on TV.
Shall I come back soon?

594
00:49:50,665 --> 00:49:52,657
I'm going.

595
00:49:52,833 --> 00:49:57,126
Let's go to lunch tomorrow
in the Athenaeum.

596
00:49:57,295 --> 00:50:02,086
It's on the corner of 43rd and 5th.
Around twelve o'clock?

597
00:50:02,341 --> 00:50:05,424
Lunch at the Athenaeum.
- See you tomorrow.

598
00:50:05,593 --> 00:50:08,084
Ode to a Greek Urn.

599
00:50:08,262 --> 00:50:13,255
'Beauty is truth. More hoof
you do not know on earth.'

600
00:50:16,310 --> 00:50:21,303
Congress is looking for redundancies
and gangsters. I'm not.

601
00:50:21,481 --> 00:50:25,857
Oh well, you'll get on TV with it.
Just kidding, Charlie.

602
00:50:26,067 --> 00:50:27,810
Not nice.

603
00:50:28,820 --> 00:50:31,606
Charles Van Doren! Hello !

604
00:50:32,781 --> 00:50:36,030
Who is that?
- No idea.

605
00:50:36,200 --> 00:50:39,284
I'll keep an eye on that Goodwin.

606
00:50:39,453 --> 00:50:42,655
It's about my reputation.

607
00:50:42,830 --> 00:50:45,949
Van Doren calls Information.

608
00:50:46,125 --> 00:50:50,832
I have a question for you.
- I have to hang up.

609
00:50:51,003 --> 00:50:53,576
Where in Brooklyn do I live?

610
00:50:53,756 --> 00:50:58,831
Did you tell him something?
- No. I have to hang up.

611
00:50:59,885 --> 00:51:01,794
How are you?

612
00:51:02,012 --> 00:51:05,676
Give me an autograph
for my wife.

613
00:51:05,848 --> 00:51:08,339
Don't be so conceited.

614
00:51:09,351 --> 00:51:11,758
Sandra says everything she thinks.

615
00:51:11,936 --> 00:51:16,348
How long have you been married?
- Five years. Are you married?

616
00:51:16,523 --> 00:51:21,765
No, there was a fashion model
picked out for me.

617
00:51:21,986 --> 00:51:24,523
But that's not how it works.

618
00:51:26,322 --> 00:51:28,564
Your Waldorf salad.

619
00:51:29,658 --> 00:51:31,781
And a Ruben sandwich.

620
00:51:37,414 --> 00:51:40,664
What do you know about that preliminary investigation?

621
00:51:40,875 --> 00:51:46,912
Dan said something about it. According to
to him it was a blow in the air.

622
00:51:47,422 --> 00:51:52,925
Something political. They talk so fast
that I'm missing half.

623
00:51:53,093 --> 00:51:56,627
Then...
-Enright. You must have that.

624
00:51:56,846 --> 00:52:00,345
Did he testify?
- Water, please.

625
00:52:02,517 --> 00:52:06,644
You can reach him at NBC.
Then Enright.

626
00:52:11,065 --> 00:52:14,516
Have you been on that committee for a long time?

627
00:52:14,693 --> 00:52:18,856
Half a year. For the inevitable
to postpone.

628
00:52:19,155 --> 00:52:23,199
The inevitable.
Is there still room for me?

629
00:52:23,366 --> 00:52:25,821
I mean Wall Street.

630
00:52:30,330 --> 00:52:34,825
A little more about that preliminary research.
I wonder...

631
00:52:35,376 --> 00:52:36,953
Dad.

632
00:52:41,631 --> 00:52:46,754
What a surprise. We share one
room but I'll never see you again.

633
00:52:46,926 --> 00:52:51,718
I hide behind your name.
- Really, we miss you at home.

634
00:52:51,889 --> 00:52:54,509
This is Dick Goodwin from Washington.

635
00:52:54,682 --> 00:52:57,303
Escaped?
- Dad hates that city.

636
00:52:57,476 --> 00:53:01,390
A swamp that breeds malaria
exchanged politics.

637
00:53:02,272 --> 00:53:05,474
What is the daily special?
- The Reuben.

638
00:53:05,649 --> 00:53:11,651
The only specially designed sandwich.
Ever awarded as the best sandwich.

639
00:53:11,821 --> 00:53:17,940
Who came up with it?
- Ruben Kay from Omaha.

640
00:53:18,117 --> 00:53:22,445
I see the sandwich here,
but no Rubens.

641
00:53:25,623 --> 00:53:26,619
Touche.

642
00:53:26,791 --> 00:53:30,870
Dick knows Byse.
- An internship with Judge Frankfurter.

643
00:53:31,044 --> 00:53:35,705
Frankfurter collects brains
as postage stamps.

644
00:53:35,881 --> 00:53:40,874
Seen the quiz on Monday?
- Then we were with Bunny Wilson.

645
00:53:41,052 --> 00:53:46,471
There was a question about Hawthorne.
- Bunny is usually unstoppable.

646
00:53:46,639 --> 00:53:50,588
Has Charlie asked you yet?
to play poker?

647
00:53:50,767 --> 00:53:53,886
A regular poker evening with
college friends.

648
00:53:54,062 --> 00:53:57,512
If you feel like...
- Do you like to gamble?

649
00:53:57,689 --> 00:54:01,473
I don't know.
I don't know anything about poker.

650
00:54:01,651 --> 00:54:05,730
If you can't see which player
the sucker is...

651
00:54:05,946 --> 00:54:08,271
it's you.

652
00:54:10,574 --> 00:54:12,613
Can I have Dan Enright?

653
00:54:14,619 --> 00:54:16,695
Dick Goodwin.

654
00:54:21,249 --> 00:54:23,621
No, I'll still call.

655
00:54:23,793 --> 00:54:26,912
The three boxing champions
for Joe Louis.

656
00:54:27,087 --> 00:54:30,087
I know that. Jim Braddock.

657
00:54:31,174 --> 00:54:33,130
Max Baer.

658
00:54:37,095 --> 00:54:39,502
Damn.
- Primo Carnera.

659
00:54:39,680 --> 00:54:41,388
Oh, yes.

660
00:54:41,557 --> 00:54:44,676
I was there when Bear defeated him.

661
00:54:44,851 --> 00:54:48,184
He went down twelve times.

662
00:54:48,354 --> 00:54:52,813
Maybe you should give me the answers
don't give anymore.

663
00:54:54,442 --> 00:54:57,110
Why do you want that?

664
00:54:57,819 --> 00:55:02,361
Charlie, you're doing well.
Everyone deserves it.

665
00:55:02,531 --> 00:55:08,948
From now on, just give me the questions.
That's a little less infamous.

666
00:55:20,754 --> 00:55:24,620
He doesn't want answers
just the questions.

667
00:55:24,798 --> 00:55:28,747
Who?
- The Great Blank Hope.

668
00:55:31,637 --> 00:55:35,965
What is 'infamous'?
- Does he just want the questions?

669
00:55:37,850 --> 00:55:44,136
Mr. Noland ? I'm Richard Goodwin
of the Control Commission...

670
00:55:45,564 --> 00:55:48,684
No, I won't say anything about that.

671
00:55:48,859 --> 00:55:52,523
I told everything I knew.

672
00:56:05,121 --> 00:56:07,659
My name is Dick Goodwin.

673
00:56:07,832 --> 00:56:11,745
I'm from the Congressional Committee
Government regulation.

674
00:56:11,918 --> 00:56:15,500
Did you testify for a
investigative jury?

675
00:56:16,255 --> 00:56:19,670
I'd like to talk to you for a moment.

676
00:56:21,134 --> 00:56:26,423
Finally. I knew it
would be a matter of time.

677
00:56:30,224 --> 00:56:33,141
Studied in New York?
-Harvard.

678
00:56:35,770 --> 00:56:40,561
My wife Toby. This is Mr. Goodwin,
investigating officer.

679
00:56:40,732 --> 00:56:44,515
Would you like coffee? I've already put.

680
00:56:44,694 --> 00:56:49,520
Very much.
- And is there any rugulach left?

681
00:56:49,697 --> 00:56:53,694
Cute, but she eats like a swarm
grasshoppers.

682
00:56:53,867 --> 00:56:58,493
If Van Doren had testified, it was this
research never destroyed.

683
00:56:58,663 --> 00:57:02,576
Declared null and void.
- Not in his life.

684
00:57:02,749 --> 00:57:04,576
What did you tell?

685
00:57:04,751 --> 00:57:06,992
Touch.
- No, thank you.

686
00:57:07,169 --> 00:57:09,126
Lester, stop it.

687
00:57:09,338 --> 00:57:12,338
Come on, otherwise Toby will eat them.

688
00:57:12,507 --> 00:57:16,206
It's fluid retention.
- A dam, yes.

689
00:57:16,426 --> 00:57:20,044
They are delicious.
- I know them.

690
00:57:22,514 --> 00:57:26,262
How did you get into Harvard?
- He had crowns.

691
00:57:28,227 --> 00:57:31,595
What did you tell the jury?

692
00:57:31,897 --> 00:57:34,897
I'm not allowed to say anything about it.

693
00:57:36,442 --> 00:57:39,526
It remains between us.

694
00:57:40,653 --> 00:57:45,729
I had to answer wrong with Marty.
Humiliating.

695
00:57:46,116 --> 00:57:48,606
From whom?
- Dan Enright.

696
00:57:48,785 --> 00:57:53,031
I 'ceilinged'.
- The ship sank, the rats remained.

697
00:57:53,205 --> 00:57:58,031
I don't know Marty, but
Charles Van Dommen continues to win.

698
00:57:58,209 --> 00:58:02,075
How can they leave you on purpose
lose ?

699
00:58:02,295 --> 00:58:07,122
Just said Marty.
- And ruin his TV future?

700
00:58:07,299 --> 00:58:10,502
Make him stop his drumming.

701
00:58:12,261 --> 00:58:16,305
Then get it.
It's a screwed-up card.

702
00:58:16,473 --> 00:58:22,225
After a Jew comes a non-Jew
who wins more. Chance ?

703
00:58:22,394 --> 00:58:24,849
So you sounded the alarm.

704
00:58:25,021 --> 00:58:30,061
You have to get Van Doren.
Are you going to do that?

705
00:58:30,192 --> 00:58:32,267
No witch hunt, like McCarthy.

706
00:58:32,485 --> 00:58:35,106
McCarthy did join in.

707
00:58:35,279 --> 00:58:37,948
can you also make it hard?

708
00:58:38,115 --> 00:58:42,242
Don't make the same mistakes I did
have made.

709
00:58:42,410 --> 00:58:46,074
Getting Van Doren is bigger news
then Sputnik.

710
00:58:46,246 --> 00:58:50,456
A blonde Sputnik
which goes upside down.

711
00:58:53,960 --> 00:58:56,629
Charlie ? With Dick Goodwin.

712
00:58:56,796 --> 00:59:00,081
The university gave me your number.

713
00:59:01,174 --> 00:59:07,176
Herbert Stempel has me
told a few things and...

714
00:59:10,640 --> 00:59:12,881
Sure. Which train?

715
00:59:13,767 --> 00:59:17,811
I'll write it down.
Grand Central Station...

716
00:59:18,104 --> 00:59:22,397
Housatonic, Cornwall,
Connecticut.

717
00:59:23,608 --> 00:59:25,766
I'm coming.

718
00:59:35,200 --> 00:59:37,869
Dick, nice to have you here.

719
00:59:39,412 --> 00:59:41,488
Flashy Mercedes.

720
00:59:41,664 --> 00:59:44,368
We're just about to eat.
- The 300?

721
00:59:44,541 --> 00:59:48,953
It's Dad's birthday, so I have a car
bought for myself.

722
00:59:49,128 --> 00:59:51,749
The quiz pays well, right?

723
00:59:53,465 --> 00:59:56,251
Dorothy, delicious tomato salad.

724
00:59:56,425 --> 00:59:58,963
Your secret?
- Manure.

725
00:59:59,136 --> 01:00:03,761
Thomas has the aerodynamics
to go to heaven.

726
01:00:03,931 --> 01:00:05,970
And who are you?

727
01:00:06,391 --> 01:00:09,178
Dick Goodwin, an acquaintance of Charlie's.

728
01:00:10,227 --> 01:00:12,516
From Boston?
- 'Brookline.'

729
01:00:20,152 --> 01:00:23,437
Horseradish from the garden.

730
01:00:28,241 --> 01:00:32,321
Aunt Rita stopped
Wendell Willkie.

731
01:00:33,078 --> 01:00:38,534
'See the summer blossom on this field.
Counted sixty rings around the tree.

732
01:00:38,708 --> 01:00:40,700
Once green, now bare.

733
01:00:40,876 --> 01:00:43,793
Once juicy, now meager
Fortunately...

734
01:00:43,962 --> 01:00:48,208
I'm stuck here like a post.'
- Say so.

735
01:00:48,382 --> 01:00:51,881
'My roots, thick and deep...'
- And decrepit.

736
01:00:52,051 --> 01:00:56,380
'... ease the suffering.'
- While an ant is eating my toe.

737
01:00:57,139 --> 01:01:03,010
Is Jack Barry unmarried? My
girlfriend would like to meet him.

738
01:01:03,185 --> 01:01:05,806
What is Dave Garroway like?
- Crispy.

739
01:01:05,979 --> 01:01:09,928
Wasn't I speaking?
- One word after another.

740
01:01:10,107 --> 01:01:12,858
Charlie is as famous as Elvis.

741
01:01:13,026 --> 01:01:16,726
King Leopold also became
displaced by his son.

742
01:01:16,904 --> 01:01:19,441
So I am King Baudouin.

743
01:01:19,614 --> 01:01:23,860
I'll make a slanted limerick.
- Please.

744
01:01:26,036 --> 01:01:28,657
How does that feel, Charlie?

745
01:01:28,830 --> 01:01:31,700
I can't go out to eat anymore.

746
01:01:32,166 --> 01:01:35,949
They look where I put my brains
feed with.

747
01:01:36,127 --> 01:01:40,338
In my day they used to sit on stakes
and goldfish bites.

748
01:01:40,464 --> 01:01:44,626
Eleven marriage proposals in one week.
- Get married.

749
01:01:44,801 --> 01:01:47,836
All those impressionable young minds.

750
01:01:48,178 --> 01:01:52,175
He is 33. Jesus had then
also a friend.

751
01:01:52,348 --> 01:01:55,099
That didn't work out either.

752
01:01:55,267 --> 01:01:59,560
They must be very nice.
- I'm also going to a quiz.

753
01:01:59,729 --> 01:02:05,932
Nobody knows what to do with the money,
except all those stockbrokers.

754
01:02:06,067 --> 01:02:10,278
I always put my prize money
just on the couch.

755
01:02:10,445 --> 01:02:14,656
There are all kinds of taxes
hooks and eyes.

756
01:02:14,824 --> 01:02:19,117
I know enough about the tax authorities.
- Not at this level.

757
01:02:19,286 --> 01:02:25,323
And my level? What should I do?
suggest?

758
01:02:25,499 --> 01:02:29,081
That money will give me a lot of work
cost, you know.

759
01:02:29,252 --> 01:02:31,125
Work ?

760
01:02:31,628 --> 01:02:36,966
Millions of people are watching.
- So we are a nation of spectators.

761
01:02:37,133 --> 01:02:39,421
Help's, Harvard.

762
01:02:40,761 --> 01:02:43,002
Claim victory and leave.

763
01:02:43,179 --> 01:02:46,678
We don't have a TV.
- Unnecessary.

764
01:02:46,849 --> 01:02:49,469
How much did you win?

765
01:02:49,642 --> 01:02:52,512
They don't have a TV.
- Didn't see anything?

766
01:02:52,686 --> 01:02:57,312
We checked on Thurber.
- He has TV and he's blind.

767
01:02:57,774 --> 01:03:00,181
How much did you win?

768
01:03:00,359 --> 01:03:03,110
$122,000.

769
01:03:04,195 --> 01:03:07,030
She understood that.

770
01:03:13,786 --> 01:03:17,949
'One thrives on sin,
the other falls by virtue.”

771
01:03:19,290 --> 01:03:21,117
Learn for the sake of learning.

772
01:03:21,709 --> 01:03:24,911
'Minor injustice is allowed
to do true justice.'

773
01:03:25,086 --> 01:03:28,087
The Merchant of Venice
- Family game.

774
01:03:28,256 --> 01:03:32,502
'What people dare to do,
what people can do.'

775
01:03:32,676 --> 01:03:36,258
What people do every day
not knowing what they do.'

776
01:03:36,429 --> 01:03:38,220
Lots of Screaming, Little Wool

777
01:03:38,388 --> 01:03:43,808
'Let rest what cannot be repaired
become. What's done remains done.'

778
01:03:43,976 --> 01:03:47,510
"What can never be repaired."
MacBeth.

779
01:03:47,687 --> 01:03:53,025
'How bad looks greyness
with a fool.'

780
01:03:53,192 --> 01:03:55,860
Open your presents, professor.

781
01:03:57,361 --> 01:04:01,524
What could this be?
- Aftershave.

782
01:04:18,378 --> 01:04:22,291
Now I have to. Thank you, Charlie.

783
01:04:23,465 --> 01:04:25,457
It seemed suitable to me.

784
01:04:31,221 --> 01:04:35,265
Do you remember Stempel?
- I can't believe I beat him.

785
01:04:35,433 --> 01:04:40,592
He says he had to be wrong
answers from Dan Enright.

786
01:04:43,606 --> 01:04:47,021
Dan made him answer wrong.

787
01:04:48,568 --> 01:04:50,359
Ridiculous.

788
01:04:51,070 --> 01:04:55,316
Still, it's strange.
Such a simple question.

789
01:04:55,490 --> 01:04:59,783
That stamps a man like Enright
can just slander...

790
01:04:59,951 --> 01:05:04,162
for Congress...
- I want to know if it's true.

791
01:05:04,330 --> 01:05:07,164
can you loosen and push off?

792
01:05:16,631 --> 01:05:19,584
can you hoist the jib?

793
01:05:29,349 --> 01:05:33,014
People like us had a hard time
at school.

794
01:05:33,186 --> 01:05:36,636
Being smart was like being cross-eyed.

795
01:05:36,813 --> 01:05:41,355
I get letters from children now
who like to read...

796
01:05:41,525 --> 01:05:44,312
and want to gain knowledge.

797
01:05:44,486 --> 01:05:47,023
Thanks in part to Dan Enright.

798
01:05:47,196 --> 01:05:49,651
He likes to see you win.

799
01:05:49,823 --> 01:05:53,156
The viewing figures are skyrocketing.

800
01:05:53,326 --> 01:05:59,445
Did he say they forced him to
groin ? How can they force him?

801
01:05:59,623 --> 01:06:02,991
Otherwise his TV future would be in jeopardy.

802
01:06:06,795 --> 01:06:10,293
How many people testified,
did he say?

803
01:06:10,464 --> 01:06:12,255
What do you mean?

804
01:06:12,424 --> 01:06:16,670
If what you say is true,
everyone lied.

805
01:06:27,519 --> 01:06:31,979
Al Freedman.
- Dan Enright. Sorry for the wait.

806
01:06:32,148 --> 01:06:36,524
Sit down. Coffee ? Glass of soft drink?
- No, thank you.

807
01:06:36,693 --> 01:06:40,310
We have everything.
- Little effort.

808
01:06:40,488 --> 01:06:42,645
You spoke to Van Doren.

809
01:06:42,823 --> 01:06:48,160
And Stamp. He had to lose
he said literally.

810
01:06:48,327 --> 01:06:52,869
I know his allegations
already out of my head.

811
01:06:53,039 --> 01:06:56,703
46 witnesses swore
that bastard is lying. Sorry.

812
01:06:56,875 --> 01:07:00,160
And that secrecy?
- Honor and good name.

813
01:07:00,336 --> 01:07:04,713
You never know what the audience will be like
will believe.

814
01:07:04,923 --> 01:07:07,330
Moreover...

815
01:07:11,762 --> 01:07:15,545
Dick... Can I say Dick?
- Sure, Dan.

816
01:07:15,723 --> 01:07:19,305
After his loss, Herb was quite
agitated...

817
01:07:19,476 --> 01:07:22,761
How could a psychologist do such a thing
mention ?

818
01:07:22,937 --> 01:07:26,601
He's tagged.
- He was quite manic.

819
01:07:26,773 --> 01:07:30,604
I'm having that conversation as a precaution
included.

820
01:07:30,776 --> 01:07:33,065
Al, turn it on.

821
01:07:33,237 --> 01:07:34,814
You should hear it.

822
01:07:36,447 --> 01:07:40,575
I want to be on a panel,
otherwise I'll expose you, asshole!

823
01:07:40,742 --> 01:07:44,656
And that bastard Van Doren.
- Blackmail?

824
01:07:44,829 --> 01:07:48,162
I need the money. I want to be on TV.

825
01:07:48,332 --> 01:07:51,949
Otherwise I'll say it's fake.
- That's not true.

826
01:07:52,126 --> 01:07:55,459
It's my concern. '21' is
crossed card.

827
01:07:59,674 --> 01:08:02,876
Was he still without money?

828
01:08:03,051 --> 01:08:05,838
Gambled. And that's the least of it.

829
01:08:06,012 --> 01:08:10,969
The judge also has Herb in
protection taken, because...

830
01:08:14,435 --> 01:08:16,890
his medical condition.

831
01:08:17,688 --> 01:08:21,850
His medical condition.
- Get those bills.

832
01:08:23,275 --> 01:08:28,351
Put yourself in his situation.
He's out of the spotlight.

833
01:08:28,488 --> 01:08:32,983
He is now 'The Man
who lost to Van Doren'.

834
01:08:33,158 --> 01:08:38,613
He can't live without TV and he is
not that stable anyway.

835
01:08:38,787 --> 01:08:43,283
You paid his psychiatrist.
- I felt responsible.

836
01:08:43,499 --> 01:08:45,871
I would have dropped it in a moment.

837
01:08:46,043 --> 01:08:49,209
Five sessions per week.
- In vain.

838
01:08:49,379 --> 01:08:54,419
Herb blames himself for that
didn't know such a simple question.

839
01:08:54,591 --> 01:08:57,757
Marty.
- His ego couldn't handle it.

840
01:08:57,927 --> 01:09:00,762
Now he blames Van Doren.

841
01:09:00,929 --> 01:09:05,721
But Herbert Stempel simply has
lost from himself.

842
01:09:05,892 --> 01:09:08,429
Did you find it stable?

843
01:09:08,602 --> 01:09:11,472
I now understand what you mean.

844
01:09:11,646 --> 01:09:15,394
He said that every Jewish participant
lost...

845
01:09:15,566 --> 01:09:19,859
of a non-Jew, who then
invariably won more.

846
01:09:20,028 --> 01:09:25,151
Who could come up with something like that?
- His Van Doren fixation.

847
01:09:25,323 --> 01:09:28,442
But I looked into it. It's true.

848
01:09:31,119 --> 01:09:33,076
We'll check it out.

849
01:09:35,853 --> 01:09:37,596
I want to go home.

850
01:09:37,772 --> 01:09:40,558
We're out to dinner. Stay comfortable.

851
01:09:40,732 --> 01:09:42,808
This is ridiculous.

852
01:09:49,864 --> 01:09:53,861
You didn't call back.
Have you spoken to Van Doren?

853
01:09:54,034 --> 01:09:57,651
I spoke to Enright.
- It's not about him.

854
01:09:57,829 --> 01:10:01,872
You blackmailed him into getting in
a TV panel.

855
01:10:02,040 --> 01:10:07,164
I didn't blackmail him.
- Everything's on tape.

856
01:10:07,336 --> 01:10:12,211
He promised. Which band?
What are you talking about?

857
01:10:12,382 --> 01:10:16,213
I get it. You want to get me.

858
01:10:16,385 --> 01:10:20,002
Piles of evidence against it
Herb Stempel.

859
01:10:20,179 --> 01:10:24,093
You and Van Doren are four hands
on a study belly.

860
01:10:24,266 --> 01:10:26,009
I was a fool.

861
01:10:26,184 --> 01:10:30,311
Do you think you because of Harvard
do you have a finger in the pie?

862
01:10:30,479 --> 01:10:34,558
Who paid your psychiatrist?
- Van Doren got the answers.

863
01:10:34,732 --> 01:10:37,567
Well, he just knows a lot.

864
01:10:37,735 --> 01:10:41,150
I'm sure.
- Bullshit.

865
01:10:41,321 --> 01:10:43,479
I got them too.

866
01:10:50,203 --> 01:10:54,449
You got the answers?
What do you mean ?

867
01:10:54,623 --> 01:10:59,082
A couple. Enough to
to pay back my in-laws.

868
01:10:59,251 --> 01:11:01,327
Then why are you complaining?

869
01:11:01,503 --> 01:11:05,334
I don't play for Crown Prince
of Education.

870
01:11:05,506 --> 01:11:10,416
I was not humbled
ahead Time!

871
01:11:22,728 --> 01:11:27,389
Toby, why are you running away?
- So you got the answers.

872
01:11:27,565 --> 01:11:32,688
I knew most of the questions myself.
I probably mentioned it.

873
01:11:32,861 --> 01:11:35,814
You don't 'quote' something like that.

874
01:11:35,988 --> 01:11:39,854
Enright asked if I wanted 25 grand
wanted to earn.

875
01:11:40,033 --> 01:11:43,567
Who turns down something like that?
- It's unfair.

876
01:11:43,744 --> 01:11:46,495
My father always said:

877
01:11:46,663 --> 01:11:50,790
'Hard work gets you ahead'.
Was that fair?

878
01:11:50,958 --> 01:11:55,868
Does Geritol cure bad blood?
And now I should be ashamed?

879
01:11:56,045 --> 01:11:57,918
You lied to me.

880
01:11:58,088 --> 01:12:01,955
What do I care?
like a bunch of fools...

881
01:12:02,133 --> 01:12:05,299
I was one of those fools.

882
01:12:15,435 --> 01:12:20,855
Why does he say he has the answers?
got ? That is inconvenient for him.

883
01:12:21,023 --> 01:12:25,399
Maybe it is.
- I have that feeling too.

884
01:12:25,568 --> 01:12:28,604
But they think he's crazy.

885
01:12:28,779 --> 01:12:33,440
Not Van Doren. Let him testify.
- Why ?

886
01:12:33,616 --> 01:12:36,651
Van Doren gets stuck
also the answers.

887
01:12:36,827 --> 01:12:42,449
His family hangs out with people like
Thurber, Trilling and Bunny Wilson.

888
01:12:42,623 --> 01:12:45,825
Bunny ?
- That's what they call Edmund Wilson.

889
01:12:46,000 --> 01:12:47,827
So you too?

890
01:12:48,002 --> 01:12:51,915
Why is he risking everything?

891
01:12:52,088 --> 01:12:54,661
He is at the forefront of Time.

892
01:12:54,841 --> 01:12:58,256
Not because he's Mark's son.

893
01:12:58,760 --> 01:13:01,547
Boxing. How many points?

894
01:13:01,763 --> 01:13:05,510
I play for 8 points.
- For 8 points:

895
01:13:05,682 --> 01:13:11,020
Who were the three champions
heavyweight for Joe Louis ?

896
01:13:13,939 --> 01:13:16,773
My father would know.

897
01:13:17,441 --> 01:13:20,311
James J. Braddock.
- Good.

898
01:13:20,777 --> 01:13:23,398
Max Bear lost to Braddock.

899
01:13:23,571 --> 01:13:29,276
And who won Bear?
- He knocked him down twelve times.

900
01:13:29,534 --> 01:13:32,451
A gamble?
- Primo Carnera.

901
01:13:32,620 --> 01:13:34,991
You have 21 points!

902
01:13:44,421 --> 01:13:47,041
To stake.
- I'll pass.

903
01:13:47,214 --> 01:13:49,787
Five dollars.
- I'll make it six.

904
01:13:49,967 --> 01:13:51,710
I'm gone.

905
01:13:51,968 --> 01:13:55,336
Look after. Dick works in Washington.

906
01:13:55,512 --> 01:13:58,548
All my money already goes there.

907
01:13:58,723 --> 01:14:03,052
Tax is theft.
- You mean property.

908
01:14:03,227 --> 01:14:08,101
'Possession is theft.'
That's how Proudhon said it.

909
01:14:09,398 --> 01:14:13,181
I warned you.
- Fine, another one.

910
01:14:18,614 --> 01:14:22,029
What are you doing now?
- I'll go over five.

911
01:14:22,200 --> 01:14:23,943
What do you have then?

912
01:14:24,118 --> 01:14:27,984
The truth has its price.
- Everything has its price.

913
01:14:29,372 --> 01:14:31,613
And you, Dick?

914
01:14:31,791 --> 01:14:35,704
Dick thinks '21'
card has been crossed.

915
01:14:36,127 --> 01:14:37,621
Is that so?

916
01:14:41,548 --> 01:14:46,790
Which cards are in profile?
- Jack of Spades, King of Diamonds...

917
01:14:46,969 --> 01:14:50,302
Likes to play. That annoying quiz...

918
01:14:50,472 --> 01:14:54,385
What was the name of the doctor to Lincoln
his deathbed?

919
01:14:55,350 --> 01:14:57,639
Joseph K Barnes.

920
01:14:57,811 --> 01:15:00,182
Who led the investigation?

921
01:15:00,354 --> 01:15:03,438
Clarvoe. John Alexander Clarvoe.

922
01:15:03,607 --> 01:15:07,057
Who took it off?
-Charles D. Brown.

923
01:15:07,235 --> 01:15:09,903
Inheritance taxes were fatal.

924
01:15:10,070 --> 01:15:13,320
Not bad, eh?
- Who's coming?

925
01:15:19,744 --> 01:15:22,863
Not bad.
- Come along, Dick.

926
01:15:25,874 --> 01:15:27,831
Well, Dick?

927
01:15:28,835 --> 01:15:30,743
You lie.

928
01:15:34,047 --> 01:15:37,462
Bluff. The term is bluffing.

929
01:15:42,512 --> 01:15:44,800
Bloodlink.

930
01:15:45,473 --> 01:15:48,508
Take Geritol.
- To eat.

931
01:15:58,524 --> 01:16:04,277
Charlie, only the three of us know
of it.

932
01:16:04,571 --> 01:16:09,990
He can't get me talking.
- He excelled at Harvard.

933
01:16:11,034 --> 01:16:15,659
Stop it.
- I won't say anything. Over my dead body.

934
01:16:15,829 --> 01:16:18,913
Even if they torture me like...

935
01:16:19,332 --> 01:16:21,573
Painbank?
- Precisely.

936
01:16:21,751 --> 01:16:24,323
Iron Maiden? Bastinado ?

937
01:16:24,503 --> 01:16:28,546
I don't say anything. Right, Dan?
- Precisely.

938
01:16:28,714 --> 01:16:31,999
Will the orphan girl become real?
sawn through?

939
01:16:32,175 --> 01:16:35,010
That's something different.
- Also entertainment.

940
01:16:35,178 --> 01:16:37,798
I am a university lecturer.

941
01:16:39,639 --> 01:16:42,046
He has to go to grime.

942
01:17:42,772 --> 01:17:45,476
Are you Charles Van Doren?

943
01:17:45,649 --> 01:17:49,064
Sorry Dad, but I had to get out of town.

944
01:17:49,235 --> 01:17:52,271
You're always welcome, Charlie.

945
01:17:52,654 --> 01:17:55,654
It's sometimes difficult to sleep there.

946
01:17:55,823 --> 01:18:00,283
I took the cake.
- You look tired.

947
01:18:00,952 --> 01:18:05,412
A bit twisted.
- Always when a book is almost finished.

948
01:18:05,581 --> 01:18:08,285
It's because of that quiz.

949
01:18:08,458 --> 01:18:12,621
Oh well, we went to that quiz
looked.

950
01:18:12,795 --> 01:18:16,329
We have the TV in the den
put.

951
01:18:16,506 --> 01:18:18,214
I didn't know.

952
01:18:18,382 --> 01:18:22,842
That question about
the Galapagos Islands...

953
01:18:23,011 --> 01:18:25,548
Oh well, I'll have a piece too.

954
01:18:25,721 --> 01:18:28,638
The voyage of the Beagle.

955
01:18:28,807 --> 01:18:32,010
Yes, biology for six points.

956
01:18:32,185 --> 01:18:38,802
Good God, that pressure, those lights,
the money, those weird little booths...

957
01:18:38,982 --> 01:18:43,477
that man who talks like he
at a bullfight.

958
01:18:43,652 --> 01:18:48,194
I might forget my name.
- I'm doing well.

959
01:18:48,364 --> 01:18:52,657
Amazing how simple you are
it makes it seem.

960
01:18:52,909 --> 01:18:57,036
Your mother already said that you
the actor was.

961
01:18:57,204 --> 01:19:03,490
Oh well, as long as it doesn't hinder your work,
why not?

962
01:19:18,679 --> 01:19:21,004
Is something bothering you?

963
01:19:29,771 --> 01:19:33,388
I didn't know you felt pressure...

964
01:19:33,566 --> 01:19:37,562
when completing a book.

965
01:19:37,735 --> 01:19:42,361
So what. With that book
about Hawthorne...

966
01:19:42,531 --> 01:19:48,235
I was tossing and turning so much that mom
threatened to go to a hotel.

967
01:19:49,953 --> 01:19:53,867
I'm finally getting the hang of it.

968
01:19:55,541 --> 01:19:58,874
I remember it well:

969
01:19:59,044 --> 01:20:02,328
After school to the refrigerator.

970
01:20:02,505 --> 01:20:06,916
A bottle of ice-cold milk, a large piece
chocolate cake.

971
01:20:07,091 --> 01:20:09,926
The simplicity of that.

972
01:20:10,219 --> 01:20:14,132
That feeling of happiness comes
never back again.

973
01:20:17,558 --> 01:20:20,095
Not until you have a son.

974
01:20:32,820 --> 01:20:36,733
American Literature,
for eleven points.

975
01:20:36,906 --> 01:20:41,235
I read something from our biggest one
poets. Say their name.

976
01:20:41,410 --> 01:20:45,786
'I hear America singing,
I hear the same Christmas carols.'

977
01:20:45,955 --> 01:20:49,703
That's from Walt Whitman.
- Fine.

978
01:20:49,875 --> 01:20:55,709
“I shot an arrow into the distance
I don't know where he fell.'

979
01:20:55,879 --> 01:20:59,164
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
- That's fine too.

980
01:20:59,340 --> 01:21:03,918
“Hope is the thing with feathers
that settles in the soul.'

981
01:21:04,094 --> 01:21:07,925
That's from my favorite poet...

982
01:21:08,973 --> 01:21:12,222
Emily Dickinson
-I'm sorry, Jim.

983
01:21:12,976 --> 01:21:15,300
Did you say Emily Dickinson?

984
01:21:15,519 --> 01:21:18,555
Of course. Fine.

985
01:21:25,902 --> 01:21:28,144
I'm sorry, Jim.

986
01:21:28,321 --> 01:21:30,894
Did you say Emily Dickinson?

987
01:21:57,635 --> 01:22:01,846
Mr. Snodgrass ?
My name is Richard Goodwin.

988
01:22:02,097 --> 01:22:06,141
I am an investigating officer
for Congress.

989
01:22:06,309 --> 01:22:09,095
We investigate the quizzes on TV.

990
01:22:09,269 --> 01:22:13,136
I saw a video of your performance
in '21'.

991
01:22:13,814 --> 01:22:15,854
Mr. Snodgrass ?

992
01:22:25,073 --> 01:22:26,318
Nice.

993
01:22:27,992 --> 01:22:29,652
What is this?

994
01:22:43,546 --> 01:22:47,044
Drive on. Take the back entrance.

995
01:22:51,510 --> 01:22:53,965
Office of Mr. Kintner.

996
01:22:55,889 --> 01:22:59,138
Will he come before the peacock molts?

997
01:22:59,308 --> 01:23:03,684
What are you from?
- Congress, you know?

998
01:23:03,853 --> 01:23:06,937
Is your name Goldwyn?

999
01:23:07,189 --> 01:23:11,435
Goodwin.
- I'll just ask if he has time.

1000
01:23:13,110 --> 01:23:16,229
Red please, with long stems.

1001
01:23:16,446 --> 01:23:22,281
He does have time for Geritol.
- You better come back later.

1002
01:23:23,285 --> 01:23:25,076
Good evening, Rose.

1003
01:23:25,245 --> 01:23:30,664
Mr. Kintner, I'm Goodwin from the
Committee on Government Regulation.

1004
01:23:30,832 --> 01:23:33,786
How is Chairman Harris?

1005
01:23:33,960 --> 01:23:37,209
Good.
- Is he golfing better now?

1006
01:23:37,379 --> 01:23:40,747
I'm giving you the opportunity to cooperate.

1007
01:23:40,923 --> 01:23:44,007
Please. Now, would you excuse me?

1008
01:23:44,176 --> 01:23:47,046
The quiz '21' is a complete joke.

1009
01:23:47,220 --> 01:23:51,928
For the ratings and the money.
- Young man...

1010
01:23:52,182 --> 01:23:55,432
I'm president of NBC.

1011
01:23:55,601 --> 01:23:59,894
I don't know anything about what's going on
at '21'.

1012
01:24:00,063 --> 01:24:05,353
Does your boss know what you're doing?
- I've got Enright stuck.

1013
01:24:05,526 --> 01:24:07,648
Then you are also hanging.

1014
01:24:07,819 --> 01:24:13,109
Oh yes? Then why are you the one?
who sweats?

1015
01:24:15,283 --> 01:24:19,114
Our new candidate
Mrs. Vivienne Nearing.

1016
01:24:19,286 --> 01:24:24,576
And with $139,000
our champion Charles Van Doren.

1017
01:24:26,834 --> 01:24:28,992
Welcome, Mrs. Nearing.

1018
01:24:29,169 --> 01:24:32,502
Mr. Van Doren, it's about
a lot of money.

1019
01:24:32,672 --> 01:24:36,621
Mrs. Nearing, here comes something more
about you.

1020
01:24:36,800 --> 01:24:40,085
She paints, plays the piano
and puzzles.

1021
01:24:40,261 --> 01:24:45,800
She studied literature and law
at Columbia University.

1022
01:24:45,974 --> 01:24:48,927
She and her husband are lawyers.

1023
01:24:49,101 --> 01:24:52,516
Beautiful and brains.
- I'm already squeezing it.

1024
01:24:52,687 --> 01:24:57,893
You know how it goes. Do your
headphones on. Good luck.

1025
01:24:58,066 --> 01:25:00,059
We're going to play.

1026
01:25:04,697 --> 01:25:08,480
Important aircraft from WWII
were:

1027
01:25:08,658 --> 01:25:11,658
The P-40, the P-47, the P-51...

1028
01:25:11,869 --> 01:25:15,948
the B-24, the B-25 and the B-26.

1029
01:25:16,122 --> 01:25:20,119
What were the nicknames
of these planes?

1030
01:25:20,292 --> 01:25:25,000
That one is much more difficult then
that 10 point question for that woman.

1031
01:25:25,171 --> 01:25:27,626
Do you know those names?
- No.

1032
01:25:27,798 --> 01:25:32,459
Who knows? He is not
minister of defense.

1033
01:25:33,469 --> 01:25:38,177
The last round. Mrs. Nearing
leads 21 to 16.

1034
01:25:38,348 --> 01:25:42,475
Het moment van de waarheid voor
Charles Van Doren.

1035
01:25:42,643 --> 01:25:46,805
Zal hij de titel behouden
after 14 weeks?

1036
01:25:48,939 --> 01:25:52,853
Mrs. Nearing, u heeft al 21 punten.

1037
01:25:53,026 --> 01:25:58,611
You can listen in,
but you are not allowed to say anything.

1038
01:25:58,780 --> 01:26:02,563
Mr. Van Doren, de categorie is
royal houses.

1039
01:26:05,035 --> 01:26:08,368
Voor hoeveel punten wil u spelen ?

1040
01:26:09,705 --> 01:26:11,911
For 5 points.

1041
01:26:12,124 --> 01:26:15,658
Noem de koningen van deze landen:

1042
01:26:15,835 --> 01:26:19,832
Noorwegen, Zweden, Belgi en Irak.

1043
01:26:20,005 --> 01:26:26,006
Mag het derde land 't laatst ?
- Naturally. It's a lot of money.

1044
01:26:26,843 --> 01:26:30,046
Norway: King Haakon.

1045
01:26:30,221 --> 01:26:33,056
Sweden: Gustavus.

1046
01:26:33,474 --> 01:26:36,806
And the king of Iraq?
- Iraq...

1047
01:26:37,018 --> 01:26:41,015
Out of that thing. That damn thing has to come out.

1048
01:26:41,313 --> 01:26:43,305
What do you have?

1049
01:26:43,481 --> 01:26:46,150
It's too nerve-wracking.

1050
01:26:46,901 --> 01:26:52,486
His great uncle was in that beautiful book
The Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

1051
01:26:56,366 --> 01:26:59,616
King Faisal.
- Good. And Belgium?

1052
01:27:01,745 --> 01:27:04,615
Was that the third country?

1053
01:27:07,708 --> 01:27:09,784
The King of Belgium.

1054
01:27:21,427 --> 01:27:23,585
A little more time?

1055
01:27:25,180 --> 01:27:27,884
The King of Belgium...

1056
01:27:29,392 --> 01:27:36,057
I can see it with that one
Habsburg lip. But his name...

1057
01:27:38,774 --> 01:27:40,647
He gets out.

1058
01:27:45,529 --> 01:27:47,237
Is Garroway there?

1059
01:27:51,409 --> 01:27:54,611
You must answer now.

1060
01:27:58,623 --> 01:28:00,911
It seems so simple.

1061
01:28:09,423 --> 01:28:11,047
Leopold.

1062
01:28:18,722 --> 01:28:24,260
Unfortunately, the answer is Baldwin.
King Baudouin.

1063
01:28:24,434 --> 01:28:27,435
Leopold is his father.

1064
01:28:29,105 --> 01:28:33,267
Sensational. Mrs. Nearing,
you have dethroned the champion.

1065
01:28:33,441 --> 01:28:36,856
Baldwin. Naturally.
- Come on.

1066
01:28:42,115 --> 01:28:44,819
Give it another chance.

1067
01:28:46,535 --> 01:28:49,204
A Bonus Round. He has to go back.

1068
01:28:49,370 --> 01:28:53,450
Someone will call him, right?
- I'm sure.

1069
01:28:53,624 --> 01:28:56,410
Kind regards.
- Changing the guard.

1070
01:28:56,584 --> 01:29:00,711
You have 10000 of him.
We don't blame you.

1071
01:29:00,838 --> 01:29:07,040
I'll see you next week.
Applause for Mrs. Vivienne Nearing.

1072
01:29:10,970 --> 01:29:13,805
Do I see Dave Garroway standing there?

1073
01:29:13,973 --> 01:29:17,341
Dave Garroway of the
NBC Today Show.

1074
01:29:19,977 --> 01:29:24,270
How are you, Charlie?
What are you going to do now?

1075
01:29:24,439 --> 01:29:30,476
First enjoy my rest
and then back to the books.

1076
01:29:30,652 --> 01:29:34,863
It had to happen at some point.
But we don't want to lose you.

1077
01:29:35,031 --> 01:29:40,154
We want you on the Today Show
as a cultural employee...

1078
01:29:40,326 --> 01:29:42,995
for everyone in America.

1079
01:29:43,162 --> 01:29:46,198
As long as you don't fire the monkey.

1080
01:29:46,373 --> 01:29:50,868
How about $50,000
per year ?

1081
01:29:55,213 --> 01:30:00,170
I would like to start teaching again.

1082
01:30:00,592 --> 01:30:04,838
This is the largest class in the world:
Television.

1083
01:30:05,012 --> 01:30:08,463
If you would like to sign here.

1084
01:30:08,848 --> 01:30:12,976
Don't do that, Charlie.
That's not for you.

1085
01:30:17,147 --> 01:30:19,304
Congratulations, Charlie.

1086
01:30:23,902 --> 01:30:26,024
Is Mr. Garroway gone yet?

1087
01:30:26,195 --> 01:30:30,274
Nice work, Dave.
Congratulations, Mrs. Nearing.

1088
01:30:30,865 --> 01:30:33,949
Gentlemen, this is Mrs. Nearing.

1089
01:30:38,330 --> 01:30:40,369
Troublemaker.

1090
01:30:40,873 --> 01:30:44,656
Come with the camera and
the blackboard.

1091
01:30:45,210 --> 01:30:48,792
Remember James Snodgrass?
- Get Mrs. Nearing.

1092
01:30:48,963 --> 01:30:53,090
James Snodgrass. He has too
took part in that quiz.

1093
01:30:53,299 --> 01:30:58,174
There were so many.
- He was an artist.

1094
01:30:58,345 --> 01:31:01,215
Al is looking for the candidates.

1095
01:31:01,389 --> 01:31:04,176
A photo with her mother.

1096
01:31:04,350 --> 01:31:07,385
That question about Emily Dickinson.

1097
01:31:07,560 --> 01:31:11,972
He had to give a wrong answer.
- I'm busy.

1098
01:31:12,147 --> 01:31:16,559
I saw it again.
Barry reacted too late.

1099
01:31:16,734 --> 01:31:19,770
Who told you that?

1100
01:31:19,945 --> 01:31:23,776
Herb or that beatnik out
Greenwich Village ?

1101
01:31:23,948 --> 01:31:27,399
What do you mean beatnik? Because he
is not a Van Doren?

1102
01:31:27,576 --> 01:31:30,031
He certainly isn't.

1103
01:31:30,203 --> 01:31:35,243
All that bullshit from those weirdos.
You can't make anything hard.

1104
01:31:35,415 --> 01:31:40,871
This envelope contains all
quiz questions for Snodgrass.

1105
01:31:41,128 --> 01:31:45,291
The funny thing is that the quiz
on January 13th.

1106
01:31:45,465 --> 01:31:50,375
But he posted this to himself
on January 11.

1107
01:31:50,844 --> 01:31:54,177
Did I make it hard enough?

1108
01:32:17,740 --> 01:32:19,779
Why did he do that?

1109
01:32:20,325 --> 01:32:23,361
How does it feel to be stuck?

1110
01:32:25,371 --> 01:32:27,659
Posted to himself?

1111
01:32:27,831 --> 01:32:33,168
Do you want to become the scapegoat while
NBC and Geritol get rich?

1112
01:32:43,093 --> 01:32:48,430
Do I have to involve the broadcaster?
- You don't owe them anything.

1113
01:32:49,473 --> 01:32:55,841
When I say that the broadcaster knew about it
and they knew nothing...

1114
01:32:57,646 --> 01:33:03,813
then I'm out of here.
- You already are, I think.

1115
01:33:06,986 --> 01:33:09,358
Television is my life.

1116
01:33:09,530 --> 01:33:11,403
It's over.

1117
01:33:11,615 --> 01:33:14,152
Go talk to your family.

1118
01:33:19,162 --> 01:33:21,285
Idea.

1119
01:33:22,039 --> 01:33:24,612
Do you want to be on a TV panel?

1120
01:33:28,378 --> 01:33:30,037
Serious.

1121
01:33:36,467 --> 01:33:38,958
I'll call you later, Dan.

1122
01:33:55,816 --> 01:33:59,647
Sorry about the robe.
I caught up on sleep.

1123
01:33:59,819 --> 01:34:03,768
My train to Washington
goes at ten o'clock.

1124
01:34:03,947 --> 01:34:07,149
We're going to have hearings.

1125
01:34:07,450 --> 01:34:10,865
Real ? I leave and you come on.

1126
01:34:11,036 --> 01:34:13,491
And the world's largest classroom?

1127
01:34:13,663 --> 01:34:17,706
Oh, that. It is the world's largest
nonsense.

1128
01:34:20,209 --> 01:34:25,451
You probably drink your coffee black.
- Black is fine.

1129
01:34:29,925 --> 01:34:33,625
So, we drink to...

1130
01:34:34,846 --> 01:34:36,885
the escape.

1131
01:34:39,349 --> 01:34:45,469
'Where the heart is preserved
the rest of life does not last.'

1132
01:34:45,646 --> 01:34:47,638
King Baudouin.

1133
01:34:49,899 --> 01:34:51,891
No, Emily Dickinson.

1134
01:34:52,067 --> 01:34:54,225
Your wrong answer.

1135
01:34:55,570 --> 01:35:01,524
Oh, that. The Belgian consulate
formally reprimanded me.

1136
01:35:01,992 --> 01:35:07,412
In Cornwall your father compared
himself with Leopold, remember?

1137
01:35:07,579 --> 01:35:13,035
You 'lost' just like Stempel.
- I blacked out.

1138
01:35:13,209 --> 01:35:18,450
I was there. I would swear
that I saw you grin.

1139
01:35:21,549 --> 01:35:25,759
I wanted out.
You understand that, right?

1140
01:35:25,927 --> 01:35:30,006
It's like I've been breathing for 14 weeks
have withheld.

1141
01:35:31,681 --> 01:35:33,923
What do you think?

1142
01:35:34,851 --> 01:35:37,555
I have consulted.

1143
01:35:37,728 --> 01:35:42,305
You don't have to testify.
I don't want to destroy anyone.

1144
01:35:42,481 --> 01:35:44,888
Move on with your life.

1145
01:35:45,067 --> 01:35:49,644
But from man to man:
Did you get the answers?

1146
01:35:49,820 --> 01:35:52,939
From man to man?
- Yes, among us.

1147
01:35:53,115 --> 01:35:58,700
Still that stuff with Stempel?
It's unreliable.

1148
01:35:58,869 --> 01:36:03,577
James Snodgrass said he
got the answers too.

1149
01:36:03,748 --> 01:36:05,491
He can lie.

1150
01:36:05,666 --> 01:36:09,034
He posted the answers
to himself.

1151
01:36:09,210 --> 01:36:14,749
For show. Evidence enough.
- But not to me.

1152
01:36:14,923 --> 01:36:20,047
Would you like to claim that you are the only one?
didn't get the answers?

1153
01:36:20,219 --> 01:36:23,504
A perseverer. I envy you.
- For the money?

1154
01:36:23,680 --> 01:36:26,716
You don't know what a lot of money is.

1155
01:36:26,891 --> 01:36:30,176
You insult and envy me.
That's not possible.

1156
01:36:30,352 --> 01:36:33,222
If someone offered you so much...

1157
01:36:33,396 --> 01:36:37,523
for a fake quiz, would you?
don't do it?

1158
01:36:37,691 --> 01:36:39,849
No, of course not.

1159
01:36:40,026 --> 01:36:45,730
Fame, 50 grand for poetry op
TV to read. Wouldn't you?

1160
01:36:49,158 --> 01:36:51,031
So I do.

1161
01:36:57,956 --> 01:37:00,328
Believe me, Dick.

1162
01:37:06,463 --> 01:37:09,582
Don't embarrass me.

1163
01:37:09,757 --> 01:37:12,674
Shut your mouth. Also against the press.

1164
01:37:12,843 --> 01:37:18,714
Disappear for two weeks. Don't
something that makes me summon you.

1165
01:37:25,102 --> 01:37:26,976
More coffee?

1166
01:37:27,813 --> 01:37:32,521
No, I don't want to miss my train.

1167
01:37:38,279 --> 01:37:41,149
The hearing begins.

1168
01:37:41,699 --> 01:37:46,739
The Control Commission
Government regulation has been instituted...

1169
01:37:46,911 --> 01:37:52,284
in accordance with paragraph 136
of the Revised Regulation Act...

1170
01:37:52,457 --> 01:37:58,458
to monitor compliance
of government regulation.

1171
01:37:58,795 --> 01:38:04,962
When I ask how they helped you,
you say you got the answers.

1172
01:38:05,175 --> 01:38:09,338
Then you say this was customary.

1173
01:38:09,512 --> 01:38:12,263
No, the TV tie please.

1174
01:38:14,849 --> 01:38:17,553
This is already the fifth time.

1175
01:38:17,726 --> 01:38:21,972
Be relaxed. Look at the chairman
when you speak.

1176
01:38:22,147 --> 01:38:23,890
Stop it.

1177
01:38:24,065 --> 01:38:28,358
I tell the truth.
You see lies on TV.

1178
01:38:28,526 --> 01:38:32,819
There's a lot at stake.
- I know that too.

1179
01:38:33,322 --> 01:38:37,615
Toby, just pay attention
how I'm going to finish them.

1180
01:38:37,784 --> 01:38:40,654
What do you achieve with it?

1181
01:38:40,828 --> 01:38:44,077
Which shoes? Just that low.

1182
01:38:44,247 --> 01:38:48,160
When Enright realizes that she is
drop...

1183
01:38:48,333 --> 01:38:51,915
he includes NBC and Geritol.
That will be nice.

1184
01:38:52,086 --> 01:38:56,463
I know what you achieve.
But what does he achieve?

1185
01:38:56,632 --> 01:38:58,920
In any case...

1186
01:38:59,133 --> 01:39:03,426
I make it clear that I know
which film won the Oscar...

1187
01:39:03,595 --> 01:39:07,343
in 1955. That's what I achieved with it.

1188
01:39:07,473 --> 01:39:09,097
I'm tired of it.

1189
01:39:09,933 --> 01:39:13,800
The committee calls
Herbert Stempel op.

1190
01:39:24,528 --> 01:39:27,315
In short, you kept winning.

1191
01:39:27,530 --> 01:39:32,903
Do you have any form during this period
received help?

1192
01:39:33,076 --> 01:39:36,279
I got the questions and answers
in advance.

1193
01:39:36,454 --> 01:39:39,371
I usually got them on Friday...

1194
01:39:39,540 --> 01:39:43,287
and we rehearsed on Monday.
- From the beginning?

1195
01:39:43,459 --> 01:39:47,919
Yes. Dan Enright looked me up and said:

1196
01:39:48,088 --> 01:39:52,334
'Do you want to earn 25,000?'
I said, 'Who doesn't?'

1197
01:39:52,508 --> 01:39:55,212
What do you mean by rehearsal?

1198
01:39:55,385 --> 01:40:00,591
He told me how to breathe
into the microphone and sigh.

1199
01:40:00,764 --> 01:40:02,258
Like this:

1200
01:40:06,394 --> 01:40:09,596
And then I had to say hesitantly:

1201
01:40:09,771 --> 01:40:14,231
'I play for 9 points.'
- So staged.

1202
01:40:14,400 --> 01:40:17,851
Biting my lips, wiping sweat.

1203
01:40:18,028 --> 01:40:22,819
I was not allowed to wipe, but to dab.
That came across better.

1204
01:40:22,990 --> 01:40:25,990
I was sweating because the air conditioning was turned off.

1205
01:40:32,873 --> 01:40:38,210
We want to go out a bit now
show the quiz '21'.

1206
01:40:38,419 --> 01:40:40,411
Just start.

1207
01:40:49,260 --> 01:40:53,043
Herb Stempel, now op
$69,500 is...

1208
01:40:53,222 --> 01:40:58,262
now plays for 2500 per point.
The category is:

1209
01:40:58,559 --> 01:41:02,223
Newspapers. For how many points
do you play?

1210
01:41:02,812 --> 01:41:05,184
Now I'm biting my lip.

1211
01:41:05,773 --> 01:41:07,812
We see that.

1212
01:41:07,983 --> 01:41:11,149
Then I had to open my eyes...

1213
01:41:11,319 --> 01:41:16,941
answer and erupt
in joy when it was good.

1214
01:41:17,407 --> 01:41:20,407
The Emporia Gazette ?
- Fine !

1215
01:41:22,536 --> 01:41:27,991
He got that from an article
mass psychology in Esquire.

1216
01:41:32,711 --> 01:41:37,206
Eight points.
- Van Doren can do even better.

1217
01:41:39,090 --> 01:41:42,375
So did Charles Van Doren
helped?

1218
01:41:42,551 --> 01:41:45,836
Why do I have the answers?
and he doesn't?

1219
01:41:46,012 --> 01:41:49,879
I 'lost' because they knew
that he would win.

1220
01:41:50,057 --> 01:41:56,177
Some help and others don't,
is illogical, implausible.

1221
01:41:56,604 --> 01:42:00,019
You have eight points!

1222
01:42:00,190 --> 01:42:04,816
Do you see him dabbing his eyebrow?
He doesn't sweep.

1223
01:42:04,986 --> 01:42:10,654
Have you ever had a psychiatric problem?
undergo treatment?

1224
01:42:12,992 --> 01:42:16,941
Mr. Stamp...
-Mr. Goodwin, please.

1225
01:42:17,120 --> 01:42:20,702
Five sessions per week,
that is quite intensive.

1226
01:42:20,873 --> 01:42:24,537
We all have 's
need help.

1227
01:42:24,709 --> 01:42:31,291
Does your statement possibly arise
out of spite towards Mr. Enright ?

1228
01:42:31,464 --> 01:42:34,963
No, but as someone's word
breaks...

1229
01:42:35,134 --> 01:42:37,505
Morbid fixation on Van Doren?

1230
01:42:37,677 --> 01:42:40,464
If someone promises me something...

1231
01:42:40,638 --> 01:42:44,338
You desperately wanted $25,000
earn.

1232
01:42:44,516 --> 01:42:48,050
When I see how much Van Doren won...

1233
01:42:48,227 --> 01:42:51,642
You wasted your intelligence.

1234
01:42:51,813 --> 01:42:56,106
That's the difference with Van Doren.
I have my ethics.

1235
01:42:56,317 --> 01:43:00,361
Charles Van Doren lectures
on Columbia.

1236
01:43:00,528 --> 01:43:03,529
PhD student in astrophysics.

1237
01:43:03,698 --> 01:43:06,318
Doctor of Letters.

1238
01:43:06,491 --> 01:43:11,864
A descendant of one of the most prominent
families of this country.

1239
01:43:12,037 --> 01:43:18,573
Isn't it possible that you do?
got the answers and he didn't?

1240
01:43:26,632 --> 01:43:32,135
WINNER: TV QUIZ WAS
CROSS CARD

1241
01:43:37,140 --> 01:43:39,298
Leave us alone for a moment.

1242
01:43:42,144 --> 01:43:44,930
I'm Bob Kintner.

1243
01:43:45,146 --> 01:43:48,100
Stay seated. We need to talk.

1244
01:43:49,400 --> 01:43:53,099
That thing with the quiz,
the hearing...

1245
01:43:53,278 --> 01:43:55,815
I read it in the newspaper.

1246
01:43:56,238 --> 01:44:00,614
Our lawyers have drawn this up.

1247
01:44:09,207 --> 01:44:12,539
You have to speak to the press.

1248
01:44:13,043 --> 01:44:16,707
A spelling error in the second paragraph.

1249
01:44:19,131 --> 01:44:21,419
Shall I arrange it?

1250
01:44:21,841 --> 01:44:25,708
I have not been called as a witness.

1251
01:44:25,886 --> 01:44:31,840
It seems suspicious to me
Now I'm going to say I'm innocent.

1252
01:44:34,476 --> 01:44:40,311
Rumors become common in our little world
quickly believed.

1253
01:44:42,691 --> 01:44:46,308
Television has the confidence
of the public.

1254
01:44:46,485 --> 01:44:50,897
We cannot imagine any scandal
afford.

1255
01:44:53,282 --> 01:44:56,152
I'd rather not do it.

1256
01:44:56,618 --> 01:44:58,409
I'm sorry.

1257
01:45:00,204 --> 01:45:03,489
Have we not been good to you?

1258
01:45:03,916 --> 01:45:07,248
Weren't you like family to us?

1259
01:45:09,628 --> 01:45:13,293
We see a lot in you for the future.

1260
01:45:14,966 --> 01:45:18,049
You'll definitely make the right decision.

1261
01:45:41,153 --> 01:45:43,987
You may not...
- Is he here?

1262
01:45:44,780 --> 01:45:47,650
He's gone.
- To Washington?

1263
01:45:47,824 --> 01:45:50,196
Mr. Freedman is in Mexico.

1264
01:45:56,581 --> 01:45:59,949
How do you do that without Van Doren?

1265
01:46:00,126 --> 01:46:06,245
He had no contact with NBC
or Geritol. It's about Enright.

1266
01:46:06,422 --> 01:46:10,253
The public judges.
They don't know Enright.

1267
01:46:10,425 --> 01:46:15,549
I don't want the participants
tackle, but the television.

1268
01:46:15,721 --> 01:46:20,512
Bullshit. You protect Van Doren.
- She's right.

1269
01:46:20,683 --> 01:46:25,225
You should just go.
-How do you like Dick's steak?

1270
01:46:25,395 --> 01:46:29,309
I want to spare him the publicity.
- What about Stempel?

1271
01:46:29,482 --> 01:46:32,731
Stempel is obsessed with publicity.

1272
01:46:32,901 --> 01:46:36,234
Van Doren liked to take part in that quiz.

1273
01:46:36,404 --> 01:46:39,570
This isn't a witch hunt, mind you.

1274
01:46:39,740 --> 01:46:42,740
That's not what it's about.
- According to you!

1275
01:46:42,909 --> 01:46:47,902
You're ten times better than
Van Doren. In terms of intelligence...

1276
01:46:48,079 --> 01:46:52,408
and as a human being. Yet you kneel
for him.

1277
01:46:52,583 --> 01:46:55,951
You are the Uncle Tom of the Jews.

1278
01:46:56,920 --> 01:47:00,502
What can you people do?
destroy.

1279
01:47:02,049 --> 01:47:03,875
To sit.

1280
01:47:05,801 --> 01:47:10,427
A hearing without Van Doren
is Hamlet without Hamlet.

1281
01:47:14,767 --> 01:47:17,850
You will be able to testify soon.

1282
01:47:18,019 --> 01:47:22,016
I'll keep it short. I'll give you advance notice
my questions...

1283
01:47:22,189 --> 01:47:25,723
and thanks for the
cooperation.

1284
01:47:28,778 --> 01:47:32,395
Dear help. What difficult questions.

1285
01:47:32,614 --> 01:47:36,362
The questions beforehand.
Sure sounds familiar?

1286
01:47:39,119 --> 01:47:41,740
Leave us alone for a moment.

1287
01:47:44,456 --> 01:47:46,448
Take this with you.

1288
01:47:52,421 --> 01:47:55,919
A good participant gave good ones
ratings.

1289
01:47:56,090 --> 01:47:59,209
So you had to know about it.

1290
01:47:59,385 --> 01:48:03,428
I'm selling for over 14 million
per year Geritol.

1291
01:48:03,596 --> 01:48:06,087
That's how I do business.

1292
01:48:06,515 --> 01:48:09,764
'21' costs me 35 million a year.

1293
01:48:09,934 --> 01:48:14,560
Sales increased with Van Doren
by 50 percent.

1294
01:48:15,105 --> 01:48:20,442
The view that I didn't know how to do it
what happened with that quiz...

1295
01:48:20,609 --> 01:48:22,436
is insulting.

1296
01:48:22,611 --> 01:48:26,987
So you knew.
- It's what you know that matters.

1297
01:48:27,156 --> 01:48:28,864
You don't know that.

1298
01:48:29,032 --> 01:48:33,278
You know Enright faked the case.
- You knew that too.

1299
01:48:34,495 --> 01:48:37,697
Is that so?
- Wait and see what he says.

1300
01:48:37,873 --> 01:48:43,079
What Dan says? Dan Enright wants
continue working in television.

1301
01:48:43,252 --> 01:48:48,672
The audience quickly forgets. But
companies never forget anything.

1302
01:48:48,839 --> 01:48:53,168
He knows it's over.
- No, he's coming back.

1303
01:48:53,343 --> 01:48:58,419
NBC and Geritol continue as usual.
What do you want to achieve with this?

1304
01:48:58,597 --> 01:49:00,719
I'm just getting started.

1305
01:49:00,890 --> 01:49:04,140
And why cheat with a quiz?

1306
01:49:04,310 --> 01:49:07,892
You can also answer the questions more easily
make.

1307
01:49:08,063 --> 01:49:13,222
The audience is not waiting
on intelligent figures.

1308
01:49:14,401 --> 01:49:17,235
They're all about the money.

1309
01:49:17,862 --> 01:49:20,862
If the public saw this...

1310
01:49:23,408 --> 01:49:27,654
You'll get there.
If you're careful.

1311
01:49:27,786 --> 01:49:30,786
I stopped playing golf.

1312
01:49:30,955 --> 01:49:36,743
You played poorly, but I'm eager
to beat you again.

1313
01:49:36,918 --> 01:49:40,121
You stood in that bunker for an hour.

1314
01:49:40,296 --> 01:49:43,545
Would you like to state your name and position?

1315
01:49:43,715 --> 01:49:48,210
Robert Kintner, CEO
from NBC.

1316
01:49:48,385 --> 01:49:51,670
Martin Rittenhome van
Pharmaceuticals Inc.

1317
01:49:51,846 --> 01:49:54,515
I know my responsibility.

1318
01:49:54,682 --> 01:49:57,351
We started an internal investigation.

1319
01:49:57,518 --> 01:50:00,304
This deception is being investigated.

1320
01:50:00,478 --> 01:50:03,099
And that article in Time?

1321
01:50:03,272 --> 01:50:05,679
Then I was in Europe.

1322
01:50:05,857 --> 01:50:09,356
You were travelling.
- Not read. I was travelling.

1323
01:50:09,527 --> 01:50:13,773
Never asked you anything about participants
or viewing figures?

1324
01:50:13,947 --> 01:50:18,026
That was their department.
- I trusted Dan Enright.

1325
01:50:18,200 --> 01:50:20,987
Enright produced independently.

1326
01:50:21,161 --> 01:50:23,568
What did you think when you heard it?

1327
01:50:23,746 --> 01:50:26,699
I felt terrible for the viewers.

1328
01:50:26,874 --> 01:50:32,578
I never thought she would have the
would mislead viewers in this way.

1329
01:50:32,753 --> 01:50:36,584
They need their prize money
give back.

1330
01:50:37,549 --> 01:50:40,964
Mr. Goodwin, do you have any questions?

1331
01:50:41,969 --> 01:50:45,384
No, I don't have any more questions.

1332
01:50:48,974 --> 01:50:55,141
On behalf of the subcommittee, I would like to thank you
for your arrival and your statement.

1333
01:51:06,446 --> 01:51:08,485
Van Doren has spoken.

1334
01:51:08,656 --> 01:51:12,735
I feel conned, with
you as bait.

1335
01:51:12,909 --> 01:51:14,700
Shut up.

1336
01:51:14,869 --> 01:51:18,486
When will Van Doren come to testify?
- He's not coming.

1337
01:51:18,664 --> 01:51:23,621
We would just call people
who wanted to testify.

1338
01:51:23,793 --> 01:51:27,540
I get telegrams from people
those questions...

1339
01:51:27,712 --> 01:51:30,831
why Van Doren is not
may defend.

1340
01:51:31,007 --> 01:51:35,798
All housewives in the country
protest. And those are voters.

1341
01:51:36,010 --> 01:51:37,504
Unbelievable.

1342
01:51:37,678 --> 01:51:41,296
And where is Freeman?
- On our way from Mexico.

1343
01:51:41,473 --> 01:51:43,050
By mule?

1344
01:51:43,224 --> 01:51:46,225
What did Van Doren say?

1345
01:51:46,769 --> 01:51:49,852
He is willing to testify.

1346
01:51:50,021 --> 01:51:55,441
He said he never got the answers
received in advance.

1347
01:52:19,586 --> 01:52:24,247
Your statement surprised me.
- It was against the agreement, yes.

1348
01:52:24,423 --> 01:52:30,507
I thought: If he made such a statement
he knows that I am intervening.

1349
01:52:31,261 --> 01:52:36,053
Then I understood.
He wanted me to intervene.

1350
01:52:39,268 --> 01:52:43,347
Do you have a high or low opinion?
from me ?

1351
01:52:43,521 --> 01:52:48,265
I hold you in high regard,
just like everyone else.

1352
01:52:49,609 --> 01:52:51,850
That haunts you.

1353
01:52:52,486 --> 01:52:55,985
Do you have the subpoena?
- In my pocket.

1354
01:52:59,241 --> 01:53:00,735
Well ?

1355
01:53:02,953 --> 01:53:08,491
My uncle told my aunt at the time
that he had been in a relationship.

1356
01:53:08,665 --> 01:53:13,207
My family was slightly shocked.
- Slightly?

1357
01:53:13,377 --> 01:53:17,789
That relationship was
been terminated for eight years.

1358
01:53:17,964 --> 01:53:22,341
I asked: Why sleeping dogs
wake up?

1359
01:53:22,509 --> 01:53:25,463
His answer has stayed with me.

1360
01:53:26,679 --> 01:53:29,929
Conscience continued to gnaw.

1361
01:53:32,559 --> 01:53:35,512
Maybe I'll take that risk.

1362
01:53:38,313 --> 01:53:41,516
You can also take another risk.

1363
01:53:44,610 --> 01:53:46,768
Don Quixote is lifelike.

1364
01:53:46,945 --> 01:53:51,985
How can an old guy with such a fat
helper thinks he's a knight?

1365
01:53:52,157 --> 01:53:55,988
Who wants to become a knight
acts as a knight.

1366
01:54:02,165 --> 01:54:06,826
I will miss them.
- Are you talking about quitting again?

1367
01:54:07,002 --> 01:54:12,208
Does a snail leave its house?
- I can't go on forever.

1368
01:54:12,381 --> 01:54:14,670
Just take over.

1369
01:54:14,842 --> 01:54:19,633
Have you read Mailer in Dissent?
- Casually.

1370
01:54:19,804 --> 01:54:23,551
Everyone talks about it.
Is he genius or crazy?

1371
01:54:23,723 --> 01:54:28,847
A government commission
examines the TV quizzes.

1372
01:54:29,019 --> 01:54:31,058
Yes, why exactly?

1373
01:54:31,229 --> 01:54:36,020
Some participants apparently have
received the answers in advance.

1374
01:54:36,191 --> 01:54:40,520
Cheating on a quiz? That's something like that
as plagiarism from a comic.

1375
01:54:40,695 --> 01:54:44,774
I have to testify before the committee.

1376
01:54:44,948 --> 01:54:48,399
I've done that too.
It means nothing.

1377
01:54:48,576 --> 01:54:50,533
This is different.

1378
01:54:50,703 --> 01:54:55,245
You are their boss. Such a committee
does not consist of presidents.

1379
01:54:55,415 --> 01:54:57,490
This is different.

1380
01:54:57,666 --> 01:55:01,912
Now you can clear your name.
Otherwise they still believe...

1381
01:55:02,086 --> 01:55:05,205
They believe what they want to believe.

1382
01:55:05,381 --> 01:55:07,788
Just tell the truth.

1383
01:55:07,966 --> 01:55:11,714
That quiz is disrupting your work
as a teacher.

1384
01:55:11,886 --> 01:55:15,170
And that morning program too.

1385
01:55:15,347 --> 01:55:18,845
I can't tell the truth.

1386
01:55:21,018 --> 01:55:26,640
You can't tell the truth?
Why not, for heaven's sake?

1387
01:55:26,814 --> 01:55:29,221
It's complicated.

1388
01:55:29,566 --> 01:55:31,688
Complicated ?

1389
01:55:32,527 --> 01:55:34,649
It's not possible.

1390
01:55:35,571 --> 01:55:41,323
It's about a bunch of cheaters
that were supposedly developed.

1391
01:55:41,867 --> 01:55:46,575
The problem is that so do I
was such a cheat.

1392
01:55:58,964 --> 01:56:01,003
What do you mean ?

1393
01:56:02,717 --> 01:56:05,005
They gave me the answers.

1394
01:56:05,636 --> 01:56:08,552
They gave you the answers?

1395
01:56:09,514 --> 01:56:11,470
Even to you?

1396
01:56:11,640 --> 01:56:16,218
They asked things first
which I already knew.

1397
01:56:16,394 --> 01:56:21,683
After that I just wanted to be alone
have the questions.

1398
01:56:21,856 --> 01:56:27,810
I looked up the answers myself.
After a few weeks they were gone too.

1399
01:56:27,986 --> 01:56:30,655
The whole thing was crazy and...

1400
01:56:30,863 --> 01:56:34,362
All that money for asking
that you already knew?

1401
01:56:34,533 --> 01:56:37,367
Pure inflation.
- Thank you.

1402
01:56:37,535 --> 01:56:41,283
At my age this is difficult
to contain.

1403
01:56:41,455 --> 01:56:43,992
It's just TV, Dad.

1404
01:56:44,165 --> 01:56:48,660
You act like you had no choice.
- Did I have to disappoint the whole country?

1405
01:56:48,836 --> 01:56:51,587
You took the money.
- Indeed.

1406
01:56:51,755 --> 01:56:55,917
Is that why you were concerned?
- No. I don't know.

1407
01:56:56,341 --> 01:56:59,128
It was just a quiz, Charlie.

1408
01:56:59,302 --> 01:57:02,468
'Disgusting, sir...'
- No games now.

1409
01:57:02,638 --> 01:57:07,215
but entirely mine.”
- Your name is mine.

1410
01:57:30,701 --> 01:57:32,528
I'm sorry.

1411
01:57:33,829 --> 01:57:36,035
I'm very sorry, Dad.

1412
01:57:37,748 --> 01:57:40,037
You're getting there now...

1413
01:57:41,043 --> 01:57:44,956
involved. You and mother.

1414
01:57:46,589 --> 01:57:52,922
Good God, Charlie. How do you do this?
tell everyone?

1415
01:57:56,263 --> 01:57:58,219
Are you coming?

1416
01:58:02,809 --> 01:58:06,593
The committee calls
Charles Van Doren op.

1417
01:58:31,290 --> 01:58:34,041
Photographers leave the room.

1418
01:58:34,959 --> 01:58:37,995
Your name?
-Charles Van Doren.

1419
01:58:38,420 --> 01:58:40,459
I have to go inside.

1420
01:58:44,800 --> 01:58:52,046
You swear nothing but the truth
to tell?

1421
01:59:00,145 --> 01:59:06,514
We understand that you have a statement
has drawn up that you would like to read?

1422
01:59:06,901 --> 01:59:10,767
Yes. Can I have something to drink first?

1423
01:59:22,204 --> 01:59:24,161
Just start.

1424
01:59:33,838 --> 01:59:40,504
I would give anything for it
to reverse this last year.

1425
01:59:41,594 --> 01:59:44,844
The past is irrevocable.

1426
01:59:45,514 --> 01:59:48,598
But I learned from it.

1427
01:59:49,725 --> 01:59:53,010
I learned a lot about life...

1428
01:59:53,186 --> 01:59:55,594
and about myself.

1429
01:59:56,939 --> 02:00:01,647
And about my responsibilities
towards others.

1430
02:00:02,694 --> 02:00:07,520
Good and evil are sometimes different
than they seem.

1431
02:00:11,242 --> 02:00:13,483
I was involved...

1432
02:00:14,745 --> 02:00:18,243
seriously involved in a deception.

1433
02:00:19,373 --> 02:00:22,374
I cheated on my friends.

1434
02:00:23,460 --> 02:00:26,211
I had millions of friends.

1435
02:00:33,468 --> 02:00:36,966
I have the American people
lied to.

1436
02:00:37,596 --> 02:00:43,467
I lied about what I knew
and then about what I didn't know.

1437
02:00:46,686 --> 02:00:52,521
I was a child in denial
hoping it will go away on its own.

1438
02:00:53,441 --> 02:00:55,599
It didn't go away.

1439
02:00:57,736 --> 02:00:59,563
I was scared.

1440
02:01:01,489 --> 02:01:03,149
Terrified.

1441
02:01:04,075 --> 02:01:08,985
I couldn't handle myself morally anymore
keep standing.

1442
02:01:09,162 --> 02:01:14,238
There was only one way out:
Just tell the truth.

1443
02:01:19,003 --> 02:01:23,996
It sounds trivial, but I have
finally discovered myself.

1444
02:01:25,508 --> 02:01:29,090
I've convinced myself...

1445
02:01:30,470 --> 02:01:34,549
All my life I've wanted more
done...

1446
02:01:34,723 --> 02:01:38,092
or have achieved than is the case.

1447
02:01:40,019 --> 02:01:42,723
I've had everything.

1448
02:01:45,398 --> 02:01:50,189
I stood on the shoulders
of life and I never...

1449
02:01:50,360 --> 02:01:54,772
stood on its own two feet.

1450
02:01:57,074 --> 02:02:01,153
I flew too high
on borrowed wings.

1451
02:02:03,704 --> 02:02:06,788
Everything went too easily.

1452
02:02:08,499 --> 02:02:11,619
That's why I'm here today.

1453
02:02:20,717 --> 02:02:26,055
Mr. Van Doren, my compliments
for that statement.

1454
02:02:29,933 --> 02:02:33,632
Like the chairman, I appreciate...

1455
02:02:33,852 --> 02:02:39,724
the self-examining power
that conveys your statement.

1456
02:02:41,150 --> 02:02:44,732
All praise from my side too.

1457
02:02:44,903 --> 02:02:49,860
I have heard many witnesses
in civil and criminal cases.

1458
02:02:50,032 --> 02:02:56,531
Such a self-examining confession
I haven't heard it in a long time.

1459
02:02:59,039 --> 02:03:05,574
Mr. Van Doren, I come from someone else
part of New York than you.

1460
02:03:05,752 --> 02:03:10,828
However, I can't agree
with my colleagues.

1461
02:03:12,007 --> 02:03:16,086
Someone like you doesn't hear praise
to get...

1462
02:03:16,260 --> 02:03:19,960
because he just tells the truth
tells.

1463
02:03:51,913 --> 02:03:57,119
If the committee continues
has nothing, you can go.

1464
02:04:30,067 --> 02:04:32,771
The hearing begins.

1465
02:04:33,320 --> 02:04:37,317
Our next witness is
Mr. Daniel Enright.

1466
02:04:48,582 --> 02:04:50,159
One at a time.

1467
02:04:50,333 --> 02:04:52,823
How are you feeling?
- Relieved.

1468
02:04:53,002 --> 02:04:55,872
Do you swear to tell the truth?

1469
02:04:57,797 --> 02:05:04,048
Did you know NBC fired you?
- No, I didn't know that.

1470
02:05:04,260 --> 02:05:08,257
Are you proud of your son?
- Yes, always.

1471
02:05:08,430 --> 02:05:12,593
Also on his actions?
- He has to go back to teaching.

1472
02:05:12,767 --> 02:05:17,843
The Columbia board is leaving
ask for his resignation.

1473
02:05:20,523 --> 02:05:24,271
You taught there for years.
What is your reaction?

1474
02:05:32,157 --> 02:05:35,905
Go ahead. I'll be right there.
- No response.

1475
02:05:39,121 --> 02:05:42,121
Did you have to from the broadcaster or the sponsor?
sometimes...

1476
02:05:42,290 --> 02:05:45,907
let a participant return?

1477
02:05:47,460 --> 02:05:52,536
They sometimes expressed their approval
or disapproval of a participant?

1478
02:05:52,714 --> 02:05:54,754
Never. Not to me.

1479
02:05:54,925 --> 02:05:58,921
Did they know you had the answers
gave in advance?

1480
02:06:00,721 --> 02:06:03,591
They didn't know anything about that.

1481
02:06:05,141 --> 02:06:09,007
Herb Stempel. Just a photo of you
and Van Doren.

1482
02:06:09,186 --> 02:06:12,435
Not now. He's broken.
- Come on.

1483
02:06:12,605 --> 02:06:17,349
You lowlifes never leave a thing
someone in peace.

1484
02:06:17,609 --> 02:06:22,815
Who is to blame?
- Why did you tell me everything?

1485
02:06:25,240 --> 02:06:28,655
You admit that you took the quiz
cheated.

1486
02:06:30,243 --> 02:06:31,868
Congratulations.

1487
02:06:32,037 --> 02:06:34,325
With what?
- Van Doren.

1488
02:06:34,497 --> 02:06:37,616
I wanted to grab the television.

1489
02:06:39,042 --> 02:06:42,873
But in fact, television gets us.

1490
02:06:44,546 --> 02:06:48,128
You don't think you're doing anything wrong
have you done?

1491
02:06:48,299 --> 02:06:50,505
Yes, one thing:

1492
02:06:50,801 --> 02:06:54,300
We had too much success.
- Too much success?

1493
02:06:54,471 --> 02:06:57,803
That advertising money came somewhere
from.

1494
02:06:57,973 --> 02:07:02,017
Why else is the press blowing this
so on, you think?

1495
02:07:02,185 --> 02:07:07,012
Mr. Enright, you're talking like you
are the victim.

1496
02:07:07,189 --> 02:07:10,023
The sponsor and the broadcaster benefit.

1497
02:07:10,191 --> 02:07:13,191
The participants win a fortune...

1498
02:07:13,360 --> 02:07:17,938
and the viewers enjoy.
Who are we harming then?

1499
02:07:25,369 --> 02:07:31,572
Mr. Freedman, do you admit that you...
cheated with this quiz?

1500
02:07:32,875 --> 02:07:35,792
"Yes, sir." Is that it?

1501
02:07:36,211 --> 02:07:38,962
What else should I say?

1502
02:07:39,130 --> 02:07:43,257
Give the people what they want.
Just like in your profession.

1503
02:07:43,425 --> 02:07:48,133
Is government regulation
needed in this area?

1504
02:07:48,596 --> 02:07:53,885
A quiz is not public
provision. It's entertainment.

1505
02:07:54,100 --> 02:07:59,093
We are not criminals.
We make entertainment.

1506
02:08:06,068 --> 02:08:10,111
Charles Van Doren went to
the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

1507
02:08:10,279 --> 02:08:13,363
He writes books and never has
taught more.

1508
02:08:13,532 --> 02:08:17,659
Richard Goodwin wrote
speeches for Kennedy.

1509
02:08:17,827 --> 02:08:22,867
After the assassination of Robert Kennedy
he became a writer.

1510
02:08:23,039 --> 02:08:26,288
Herb Stempel updates
municipal transport.

1511
02:08:26,458 --> 02:08:28,830
He still lives in Queens.

1512
02:08:29,002 --> 02:08:33,129
Barry and Enright returned
on TV with The Joker's Wild.

1513
02:08:33,297 --> 02:08:35,336
They became millionaires.

1514
02:08:35,590 --> 02:08:38,295
Al Freedman now works for
Penthouse.

1515
02:08:38,468 --> 02:08:41,551
NBC and Geritol were left out of the picture.

1516
02:08:41,720 --> 02:08:45,088
Geritol no longer has ties
with NBC.
