4 Terrorists,
disguised as Indian Army soldiers,

cross the Line of
Control and enter India.

Their target - a military
installation in the town of URI.

They attack at dawn - claiming
the lives of 19 Indian Soldiers

Indian Paratrooper Special
Forces arrive on the scene.

By the time the Special Forces
arrive the suicide attack is over.

By the time we had moved in
the Op was already over.

Those 4 fidayeens had
already being eliminated by

units which were already there

As soon as the day progressed

we were lifting our
body bags and coffins

and transporting
them into the hepters

and looking at the kind of
casualties that we had suffered.

There was a lot of
anger in my men especially

The loss of Indian
lives shocks the nation

Even loss of life of one
soldier is extremely painful

and we had lost so many that day

we have to avenge this
incident we cannot let the

sacrifice of our brave
soldiers go in vain

it would require a substantial
amount of damage to the enemy

for the amount of damage
they had done on us

By that time everybody
had made the assessment,

all the agencies -
where these people came from,

who were the attackers?

For decades India has been
the target of terrorist attacks

from across the western border.

The URI Attack is traced
back to the Jaish-e-Mohammad

a Terrorist Organization
based in Pakistan.

They are one of many terror networks

that operate out of Pakistan
Occupied Kashmir or POK

The Pakistan Military
actively supports them.

We always know what is going
on in the Jaish and Lashkar Cadres,

we know the number
of recruiting taking place

From Terrorist Training Camps

Armed Militants are
brought to Launch Pads.

From these outposts, Fidayeen
squads are launched into India.

These Launchpads are close
to the the Line of Control

separating India from POK

Under protection and cover
fire from the Pakistan Army

these terrorists infiltrate
to carry out attacks on Indian Soil.

On the political side began
high level meetings the NSA,

Army Chief and Defence
Minister were quite clear

that some kind of
demonstrative retributive

action will have to be taken

The URI attack could
not go unanswered

The Indian Government
decides to take Military Action

to destroy Terror Launchpads
across the Line of Control

This was a counter
terrorist operation

undertaken to neutralize
the terrorists

Very quickly all options
are put on the table

I believe you can't hit at
the army and then go hide behind

the Line of Control

The options included Air
Strikes by the Indian Air Force

and Long Range Artillery fire.

But the message would need
to be effective and precise.

The message had to go to Pakistan

If they could come
and hit us on our side

we could do the same on their side

Indian Army had the capability

Will and leadership to execute it
on the ground and make it a reality

The Operation would
have to be Surgical.

The decision is made.

India would put boots on the
ground across the line of control

2 of the Indian Army's elite
Paratrooper Special Forces Units

Operating out Jammu and
Kashmir are given the job.

They know the enemy
better than anyone else

We continue to keep
the enemy under watch

continue to carry out recon
and wait to be requisitioned.

A top secret mission is planned.

My men remain agitated
when not requisitioned

The Paratrooper Special
Forces Or Para SF

are always primed
and ready for action

Their modus operandi minimum men,
maximum impact.

Level of preparedness
always remains high

and we take it a notch
higher when requisitioned

These faceless operatives
leave behind no footprints.

Equipped with state
of the art weapons

the Para SF are a lethal force.

They are the best of the best.

We largely knew, me and my
team commander, the kind of a

message that had to be sent

This is the true story
of India's Surgical Strikes

It follows Strike
team 1 led by Major X

and Strike Team 2 led by
Major Z on their deadly mission.

The identities of the men leading
the mission remain undisclosed.

When URI incident took place

we were actually fully
ready and prepared to launch

surgical strikes in
POK on very short notice

I had just reached
from an expedition.

I was told to report
to the training area

and a game plan started
building in my head

We were brainstorming
the various options we had

And then after I would go
and present these plans to Delhi

With the high stakes machine,

with zero margin for error

On the other hands
in Political Circles,

the PM's have been given
an informal directives,

was presented a plan
on the 23rd of September

Multiple targets would be hit
across the line of control in POK.

Army Headquarters
selects 6 targets -

Then this complicate
the planning process hugely

These targets are
in enemy territory,

with varying terrain and spread
out at considerable distances.

A simultaneous attack is impossible.

Multiple teams would
conduct the operation.

Strike Teams 1 and 2 are
assigned 2 targets in North Kashmir.

But before they can strike,
they must watch and plan.

Major Z and Major X action their
highly specialized Recon Teams.

Their job _ to observe
the enemy at close quarters

and gather detailed intel.

Major Z and his
team leave home base.

The recon mission
has 3 key objectives:

One - to scope the best
route to cross the line of control.

Two - a 24 Hour
Surveillance of the Target.

And Three _ to put together
a fail safe exit plan.

All along the LC there
are a lot of built up areas,

there are lot of villages.

There are enemy
informants everywhere

The Challenge largely remained to
keep the surprise aspect wrapped up

Terrorist infiltration routes
criss-cross these pine forests

Major Z's Recon team
must remain undetected.

The mission depends on it

You have to keep track
of the noises you generate.

Just stay as small as possible
you have to walk cautiously

It takes years of training
to master stealth.

But things can still go wrong

Meanwhile, 100 Kilometres away

Major X and his Recon Team
leave from their home base.

They pick their way through
thick forest in the Pir Panjal.

It's an isolated route
and with good reason.

Just inches below the ground,

anti-personnel mines are
rigged to explode at contact.

One wrong step could blow
apart the men and the mission.

Also over a period of time

these shift from their
places where they have been put.

That becomes very difficult to make
out where these mines have moved.

Training and Caution pay off.

Major X and Recon Team 1

cross the Line of Control
in the Lipa Valley in POK

Natural features demarcate
the LOC in several places.

It is not all fenced off.

Crossing over is challenging
but not impossible

Meanwhile Major Z and Recon Team 2

have already crossed into POK
near the remote Arrang Kel sector.

There was no route
actually it was all jungle

Both the Recon teams
are now behind enemy lines.

From here on they are on their own.

Across and Behind Enemy
Lines the threat is always there

The stakes have never been higher _

Pakistani Posts,

24/7 Patrolling

and surveillance drones
keep an eye on all movement.

Somewhere towards the morning
we could hear some noise in the sky

Team 1 freezes.

It's a Pakistani drone.

If detected they could
be captured or worse...

A deadly terrorist attack

on an Indian military installation

shocks the nation.

India decides to destroy
terrorist launch pads.

Indian Paratrooper special forces

are sent on a mission
across the line of control

in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

Before they strike...

the teams must observe the enemy,
undetected.

Somewhere towards the early morning
we could hear a noise in the sky

Recon Team 1 freeze.

It's a Pakistani drone.

Equipped with hi-tech
motion sensors,

even the slightest
movement can be picked up.

This aerial surveillance
is going to slow them down.

If detected the mission
would be compromised.

And that's not a risk they can take.

The team waits till
the drone has passed.

All stations ready for move.

Now speed is the key.

They must make up for lost time.

Every moment spent in enemy
territory is fraught with danger.

The First Objective of
the Recon is now complete.

The teams have found the
best route to the Terror Launch pads

across the Line of Control

The trek generally
takes us 5-6 hours,

but that day since the surprise
was the most important thing,

so it took us around 10 hours.

By the early morning we were in the

designated area that we had selected

Finally, both recon teams
have eyes on their targets.

The teams take position.

Some of the men get as close
as 250 meters from their target.

Camouflage makes them
invisible to the enemy.

Objective 2 is to gather
every bit of Intel on the target

The teams know that there
is a lot riding on them.

Every detail is critical
to a full proof plan.

A 24 hour vigil begins.

To see but remain unseen.

It is the longest that
they are going to spend

in enemy territory.

Videos are recorded;

details logged and
the target layout mapped.

Which side do they cook their food

which side they store
all their fuel and water?

We observed the number
of people with weapons

and without weapons -
what weapons they are carrying

the general pattern
of their movement

In the Afternoon
they play board games

and sit together in
the centre of the post

thinking that they are not seen

New faces arrive at the launchpad.

A group of fully trained terrorists.

waiting to infiltrate into India.

We has also come to
know from our assets who are

working for the Jaish
and the Lashkar Tanzeems

that the number of terrorists

had increased at the
respective launch pads

But that's exactly
what Major Z wants...

The plan is to neutralize
as many terrorists as possible,

with one surprise strike.

By last light,
the movement on the target area

starts reducing and by
the time its 8 in the evening

everything dies down.

At Major x's target too, things
have quietened down for the night.

Then...Suddenly...

Why was the enemy firing?

Had Recon Team 1 been spotted?

Major X stays calm.

His men study the
pattern of enemy fire.

Soon it's clear.
This is only speculative firing.

Its common practice to
fire in the general direction

from where an attack is most likely.

It is only a deterrent.

The enemy was still unaware
of the Recon Team's presence.

Major X and his men lie low

and hope no enemy bullets find them.

At dawn, the firing stops.

Its time to get out
of the enemy territory

The team have ALL
the intel they need.

We knew each and every
component of the target,

the exact strength that was there

and in one place we also knew the

name of the terrorist
commander who was there.

Major Z's men are positioned
on an 80 degree incline.

Getting out of here may be tricky.

So ropes are tied and
left behind for a swift exit.

Now for Objective 3 of
the Recon _ The exit plan...

Find The Shortest
And Safest Route Back.

This is crucial.

After the Indian assault,

Pakistani posts in the
area were likely to open fire.

A fail safe exit plan could be the
difference between life and death

By next day afternoon
we reached our post

and we had a look at
the details we had just got.

The targets would now
be under 24 hour surveillance.

Unmanned aerial
vehicles beam live feeds

back to special forces headquarters.

It was time to plan the assault.

Major X and Major Z pick
the best men for the job.

So based on the desired effect
to be delivered onto the target.

Each operative chosen was
a specialist in his own skill

All the men who had gone

had been serving in the Valley
for like 15 to 16 years now.

Attack positions are
assigned to specialist squads.

The strike teams will
carry a deadly arsenal:

The Rocket Launcher Team's
Objective _ Shock the enemy;

Destroy Infrastructure & Supplies

Primary Target - Fuel
Storage - Living Quarters

The Machine Gunner's Objective

Disable the enemy with heavy fire

Primary Target - Open
Areas in the Terrorist Launchpads

The Snipers aim to take out sentries

and enemy fighters
positioned to retaliate

Their Primary Target - Posts,
bunkers and trenches

The Close Quarter Assault Team

would use Assault Rifles and
Grenade Launchers at close range.

Objective: shoot to kill.

Primary Target: Remaining Terrorists

The plan was simple
_ Go in all guns blazing.

So you have to be sure...
you have to be full proof...

you have to decide
ok one of my party

goes down the other is still there.

The job has to be done...

Desired Result _ Total
Destruction of the Targets.

The Assault Window
was 15 - 20 Minutes

Minimum force for maximum effect,

I think that was the

bottom line as far as surgical
strikes were concerned.

It was late night dinner
we just had rehearsals and

there was phone call.

CO just brings his thumbs up and

wrapped it up in only one sentence,
buddy time to walk

I told them as chief
the responsibility

of any failure will be mine

and the credit
of success will go to them

It was up to these

outstanding young officers
and men to go ahead and execute it.

I think this kind of action
and the Paratroopers is like,

made for each other

Our terms of reference were very
clear

Cause maximum attrition to
the enemy and leave no man behind.

A team which goes by becoming
almost ready to sacrifice itself.

Needs some guarantee,

guarantee of the nation
standing there not disowning them.

The assault teams are ready.

Its time to take the
operation to its final stage.

I wished them all well.

I feel that, I was very
sure that they will succeed,

but at the same time
in these matters the

chance and the luck plays the role

strike team 1 sets out, There's
no turning back now....

Then we marched...

Major X's team are airlifted
from their home base.

In Pakistan Occupied Kashmir,

terrorist launch pads lie
scattered along the Line of Control.

In September 2016,

multiple teams of Indian
special forces are secretly deployed

to destroy six targets
with precision strikes.

Strike Team 1 & Strike
Team 2 move in on targets

in North Kashmir - located
a hundred Kilometres apart

Strike Team 1 is dropped
off in an unmarked Landing Zone.

Military trucks
and civilian vehicles

take the strike force

to strategically
chosen drop-off points.

No one must get the slightest
hint of what's happening.

Strike Team 2 is poised
to enter the forests

of the Pir Panjal as planned

We were just waiting
for the right time

and the correct phase
of the moon for the insertion

We had gone from an area
where no one could see us.

Not even our own parties
- the surprise had to be maintained.

Sitting in my Ops centre
I had kept my teams under watch

and they were on visuals with
me and with much evidence as such

A lot has changed since the Recon
Teams were here a few days ago.

The Strike Teams are larger.

Their weapons heavier and
ammunition stock is massive.

I think it was the longest
night that I have ever faced.

It was a long wait, especially
when your men are out on Op.

So the danger of being
discovered is now greater.

The Recon and homework pay off.

Both Strike teams reach the line
of control, safe and undetected.

Major X's team is
now in Enemy territory.

Major Z's team crosses
the Line of Control

From here on,
every bit of Special Forces training

will be put to the test.

The outcome of the mission
will depend on the team's skill,

experience and courage.

Major Z's Rocket
Launcher Team are tasked

to cause the most
damage to the target.

The Rocket launcher
has tremendous back blast

and needs 40 meters of
clear space behind the weapon.

Otherwise the shooter could
suffer serious burn injuries.

But the terrain poses a challenge.

The gradient was about 80 degrees

But Major Z has a solution.

The rocket launcher
team wear harnesses.

Ropes are then fastened

and a secure firing position
created on the steep incline.

Strike Teams 1 & 2
take assault positions.

Both Team would
attack at first light.

Now, it's a waiting game.

Meanwhile,

over 300kms to the
South in the Jammu region...

another special forces strike
team blow up a terrorist launch pad.

The Surgical Strikes have begun.

Strike Team 1.

During the Operation
we were intimated that one

of the strikes had gone through

Within minutes,

Strike Team 1's Target
begins pre-emptive

firing all around their launch pad.

Strike team 1's sub-squad
is pinned down by enemy fire.

Northern Command calls in.

we were told to move in
fast and to get it over with

But the final decision is
left to the Team Leader on ground.

Heavy fire is raining
down on Major X's sub squad.

he is willing to
take a calculated risk.

His team are still undetected.

So he holds off his attack
and waits for first light.

We stuck to the time
we had selected and

we needed to wait another few hours

So we had to ask
that team to move back

Fall back, over and out.

That day I realized waiting
was a very difficult game

especially when everything is visual
and you know your men are moving

and you can hear them
out and whats happening around

The enemy fire dies down.
Strike Team 1 readies for assault.

Inside, yes of course you're tense -

first is that you have
your soldiers across.

Those people were
really in harm's way.

Will they all come back safe?

Second was that we knew next morning

India would wake up,
switch on the televisions and see

that Army has gone across
border operation

The Strike Teams are in position.

All stations ready to fire.

Three, two...

One.

Now it was our time

Fire.

Indian paratrooper special forces

strike behind enemy lines.

The assault on terror launchpads
is Surgical and intense

India's enemies are caught off guard

Everything was let
loose onto the target

they were not aware
what has happened

We scattered the enemy,

that gave an advantage
to the other team to close in.

The strike is sudden
The firepower Devastating

the enemy is reeling.

The terrorist launch pads are
pounded by Indian special forces.

Target 2 is completely destroyed.

But the mission isn't over yet.

Surrounding Pakistani
posts have been alerted

and begun firing in the direction
of the Indian strike force

That's the cue for his
team to action the exit plan.

They opened up with everything
they had and everywhere they could.

They need to get
out and get out quick.

In the shortening intervals
between bursts of gunfire,

Strike Team 2 time
their exit perfectly.

We used small windows
of 2 mins, 5 mins to exfiltrate

In the meanwhile,

Strike Team 1 continue to
unleash destruction on the target.

Their Assault Window is
closing and its time to move out.

But heavy Pakistani fire
is now raining down on them

There were bullets whizzing past us,

there were mortars rounds
which were being fired

and landing left and right of us

They were not moving out
and were so embroiled into the op

And I had to give
them a final decision

that you need to move out now.

Move.

The men dodge enemy
fire as they exfiltrate.

Main thing that
mattered was the speed

and we needed to get out of
the effective range of these weapons

Both the strike teams make
it to their rendezvous points.

They are still behind enemy lines.

A quick check and they
head towards the Line of Control.

The thing which is
left is to get back home...

And who doesn't want to go home

Strike Team 2 are back on home soil

Strike Team 1 cross the Line
of Control into the Kashmir Valley

I had given my sum
up to the higher HQ that

all my teams has crossed
back to the LC after the Op

I gave the report to

Army HQ only once
everyone came back.

But luck could still
ruin best laid plans...

In Surgical Strikes across the LOC,

India's Paratrooper Special
Forces destroy terror launchpads

in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

The Strike Teams
return to Indian soil.

But danger still lies
inches beneath the surface.

Once we started moving...
I heard a loud noise.

I was told that one of
our boy has stepped on a mine

An SF operative has stepped
on an anti-personnel mine.

It blows off a part of his foot.

The team medic can only
provide combat first aid.

But to save his foot,
he needs to be evacuated.

And fast.

All stations report, over.

Major X radios in.

Strike team 2 reach
the evacuation point.

I flew down and picked
up my chap who was injured

I took my team commanders
and we were called to the HQ to

give a final debrief of the OP

Indian Army conducted
Surgical Strikes last night

at these Launch Pads.

The operations were
basically focused to ensure

terrorists do not succeed
in their designs of infiltration

and carry out destruction and

endangering the lives
of the citizen of our country

I think the people were very upbeat.

They always expect
their Security Agencies

and the political leadership
more importantly

to rise up to the challenges
and take the bull by the horn

We have the capability
and will power to do it again.

And if required again and again

The idea was more
moral than Physical

wonderful to see the
mood of all these people and

the confidence that suddenly came

after having successfully
carrying it out.

I think that is the biggest
source of satisfaction

India always would
Love to have peace -

we don't want continues
this kind of situation.

Because economies of
both country's can prosper

Actually was a win-win
for India in every respect -

both in terms of boosting
morale of the army

and domestic population...

to the decisiveness
of the political leadership

and also being responsible
international players

I was happy we delivered
when we were called

Personally every soldier
waits for this day.

When he is called to
do something for his country.

But mostly for us and my men

it was just another job done

The battle against terror
rages on across the globe.
