in the

beginning was the word word literally in

beginning was the

word as we pointed out last Thursday

night the purpose of

John is

to convince that Jesus is the

Messiah the Son of the Living

God chapter 18 He said Jesus did many

other things which I did not write

but these things are written unto you

that you may

know that Jesus is the Messiah the Son

of the Living God and by knowing might

have

life through his

name so he gets right into the subject

he starts right out with the

Declaration in the

beginning

was the word

according to the Jewish beliefs and of

course the Jewish

prophecies the Messiah would be the Son

of

God Isaiah 9:6 declared unto

us a child is

born unto us a son is

given the government will be upon his

shoulder his name will be called

wonderful

counselor the mighty Mighty God the

Everlasting father the Prince of Peace

the son is

given his name to be

called The Mighty

God in Psalm

27 God speaking said Thou Art my

son this day have I begotten

thee when

Peter at cesaria Philipp

Philippi in response to Jesus question

but whom say ye that I am answered and

said you are the Christ or the Messiah

the Son of the Living

God

so according to Jewish

thought Jewish

tradition when the Messiah

came the Messiah would be the son of God

when the high priest asked Jesus are you

the

Messiah and he answered in the

affirmative his next question logically

followed are you then the Son of

God and when Jesus again answered in the

affirmative he sought to accuse Jesus of

blasphemy

so John

wrote that you might believe that Jesus

is the

Messiah the Son of

God and so he jumps right into it and in

the first verse shows to us that Jesus

is

God in

beginning there is no article there in

the

Greek the

word the has been added by the

translators literally in the Greek it's

just in

AR in

beginning it is the Declaration

that in the beginning he already

existed he was already

there he is the self existent Eternal

God that was existing in the

beginning when Micah made a prophecy

concerning the coming of the Messiah he

said thou

Bethlehem though you are little among

the provinces of Judah yet out of thee

shall come

he who shall rule My People Israel whose

going forth have been from old even from

Everlasting

the one who has always

existed that Eternal self

existent existing

God is the one that John is talking

about the word in the beginning was the

word

hos

there's quite a philosophy behind the

word both Hebrew and

Greek

philosophy you

see before there are

words there are

thoughts and words are the

expression of the thoughts

I may be

thinking in my mind a

thought you don't know what that thought

is until I have made that thought

expressed in

words so words reveal the

thought so in thinking of Jesus as the

word word he is the

Revelation the revealer of the

thought now behind the thought in the

Hebrew philosophy there is a

thinker and so the word would then

become that which

reveals the thought or The Thinker the

thought that is in God so the logos the

word is that which opens up and makes

understandable by revealing that which

was hidden or that which was not yet

comprehended going

back in the Hebrew

history when they returned from their

captivity to from

Babylon the

majority of the Jews

spoke

Aramaic their scriptures were written in

Hebrew but they could not

understand the

Hebrew and so they developed what they

called the

tarum and the

tarum was more or less a translation of

the HEB Hebrew into the common language

of the

people so when they would read in the

synagogue the scriptures on the Sabbath

day they would be read first of all in

the Hebrew language which the people for

the most part didn't understand it's

sort of like uh the Latin

Mass um you go there you listen but you

don't understand it

and uh so it was when they would read

the scriptures in Hebrew they wouldn't

understand

them however after reading them in

Hebrew they would read the same

scriptures from the

tarum that translation of the Hebrew

into the language they did speak and

understand now at this particular time

of the Jewish history

they had a

tradition a

feeling that God so

transcended

man that God should not be referred

to in any Wise by which he would be

thought of as a

man they had a tremendous concept of the

Transcendence of

God and thus in the Hebrew

where it would refer to God in sort of a

uh way that you would identify with man

characteristics of

man instead of Translating that God they

would translate that the

word uh to get an illustration of that

uh in Exodus chapter

19 and verse

7 uh

the

Hebrew there read and Moses came and

called for the Elders of the people and

laid before their faces all of the words

which the Lord commanded him let verse

17 is one and Moses brought forth the

people out of the camp to meet with God

and they stood at the nether part of the

mount

now God Is So Transcendent they felt

that man couldn't really meet with this

Transcendent God so the tarum translates

that that Moses brought forth the people

out of the camp to meet the

word and instead of translating the word

god they would trans at the word God as

the

word uh another place there in the tarum

is in Deuteronomy where it says God is a

consuming

fire well that puts God down they felt

on a lower level and so they wrote the

word is a consuming

fire

then

also they had what they called their

books of

wisdom and in the Book of Proverbs you

have the classic example of one of the

books of

wisdom and wisdom becomes

personified uh now wisdom is expressed

how with words you know you can be the

wisest person in the world but nobody

will know it unless it's talk you know

you got to express it in words before

they know you're

smart uh and and so uh they began to

equate the

word with

wisdom and uh the idea of the word being

God and wisdom thus wisdom becomes more

or less personified in a form of deity

so to speak uh

Proverbs 3 uh beginning with verse

13 happy is the man that findeth

wisdom and the man that GTH

understanding for the merchandise of it

is better than the merchandise of silver

the gain thereof then find gold she's

more precious than rubies and all of the

things that thou cast desire not to be

compared unto her length of day days is

in her hand and in her left hand riches

and honor her ways uh are ways of

pleasantness and all her paths are peace

she is the Tree of Life to those that

lay hold upon her and happy is everyone

that retains her the Lord by wisdom now

in many of the Hebrew translations

wisdom is translated into the word word

and so the Lord by his word has founded

the Earth by understanding he's

established the heavens by his knowledge

The Depths are broken up uh chapter 8

you have another example uh there in

verse

22 the Lord possessed me in the

beginning of his his

way before his works of

old I was set up from Everlasting from

the beginning orever the Earth

was when there were no depths I was

brought forth when there were no

fountains abounding with water before

the mountains were settled before the

hills I was brought forth while as yet

he had not made the Earth nor the fields

nor the highest part of the Dust of the

world when he prepared the heavens I was

there when he did set a compass upon the

face of the depth when he established

the clouds above when he strengthened

The Fountains of the deep when he gave

to the Sea his decree that the water

should not pass his commandment when he

appointed the foundations of the earth

then I was by him as one brought up with

him and I was daily his Delight

rejoicing always before him and so

wisdom you see is per personified and is

spoken of as

existing with God from the

beginning and there was the tie be in

their idea between the word and wisdom

because wisdom is expressed by words or

wisdom is revealed by words and thus

word and wisdom became almost

synonymous so that when John said in the

beginning was the

word the Hebrew with that kind of a uh

background would think

of God the as as it was used in the

tarum for God the

logos or he would think of uh wisdom

that which existed with God in the

beginning and so he

declares in the beginning was the

word the Greek

philosophers also

said that the

word is the expression of the thought

and so behind all words are

thoughts and there is a thought behind

everything the thought is not known

until it is revealed by the

word the Hebrew philosophy went one step

further it said if there's a thought

you've got to have a thinker I don't

know why the Greek philosophy didn't

take that next step back but they

didn't and so the purpose of the word is

to reveal the

Thinker to make known the thought

thus John is declaring that Jesus Christ

is the revealer of God to man verse 18

no man hath seen God at any time the

only begotten son which is in the bosom

of the father he hath declared

him the word translated declared there

is a um Greek word

word

existo from which we get our word ex

Jesus now if you are involved at all in

a any kind of a Bible study and prepar

preparation for the ministry you'll know

that exit Jesus is to uh bring out the

truth that is in the word the the truth

that is in the scripture it's taking a

scripture and bringing to light the

truth that is there

uh so that the people can understand

it's the revelation of the truth that is

in that passage that's what uh biblical

X of Jesus is all about it's opening up

the truth that is there so that people

can understand so he hath exed him that

is he has opened up the truth of God man

hadn't seen God at any

time but Jesus Christ who was in the

bosom of the father he

has opened the truth to man concerning

God he hath exed him or declared

him in the beginning was the word and

the Word was with

God our Bible begins Genesis 1 in the

beginning

God created

the heavens and the Earth the

interesting thing is that the word god

there in Hebrew is

Elohim which is the plural form for

God God's singular is

L the Hebrew has a du dual tense and God

duel is

Ella but God plural is Elohim in the

beginning Elohim God

plural created the heavens and the

Earth and then we find in Genesis 1

where and God Elohim said let us plural

make man in our plural image or in our

likeness and after our

image a plural noun Elohim used for God

and plural

pronouns us and

our so

that in Genesis

1 we have there revealed the Triune

nature of

God the Triune

God the three personalities that exist

in the one

God

the plural and yet the unity the Oneness

of

God and so the word was with God in the

beginning was the word he was there

existing in the beginning and he was

with God the word

with in Greek is

pro which suggests not nearly a

uh merely a nearness to God but United

activity with

God I don't know I think there's

probably nine different Greek words that

are translated with in English and it

and it shows you the weakness of the

English

language

um the word

para is translated

with but it is uh you're with someone

alongside of them is the idea of uh par

if if in Greek you were saying come go

with me uh there are there you could

mean several different things by saying

with come go alongside of me uh come uh

face to face with me uh come alongside

of me to help uh come and approach me um

the the word son in Greek is also

translated with but it means in closest

Association uh when Peter said

Lord I would die with thee that is being

close association with you in death

there is the Greek word meta which means

in the

midst uh and thou shalt call his name IM

and they shall call his name Emmanuel

which being interpreted is god with in

the midst of

us the word was Pro with God that

is united in the activity with God back

in the beginning of creation he was

United in the activity of creation as we

read in verse three also all things were

made by

him in the beginning was the word the

word was with God United in activity and

then that strong powerful statement and

God was the word that's the way it

literally reads in

Greek Kos in

hos and God was

the

word you cannot

make a

clearer

statement of the fact that Jesus is God

then John made in verse

one it cannot be stated with any greater

Clarity at

all verse first one is a declaration

that Jesus was with God and that Jesus

is

God I really feel sorry in a way for

those people who uh go to the Jehovah

Witness uh little whatever they call

their places of

assembly uh those people that have

become

involved

in the Jehovah Witness

Program because their

leaders have followed the

Aryan uh heresy of the early

church where Aras declared that Jesus

was not Divine he was not

God and uh the Jehovah Witness

leadership followed the area heresy it

was picked up by Russell and sort of

revitalized by

him and they tell the

people all kinds of

things that if the people knew the Greek

language they could never be

deceived but they come on with with sort

of you know you better not just read the

Bible that will confuse you and you can

be in darkness just reading the

Bible read our books that explain the

Bible they will lead you into

light actually you can leave your Bible

on the shelf and just read our books

that explain the Bible and they will

keep you in the light if you try to read

the Bible yourself you'll probably end

in darkness so it's better that you not

read the Bible just read our books that

tell you what the Bible

says and so they begin their

uh gobbly go double talk and and they

say well the Greek language and a Greek

tense and and they even have made up

Greek tenses that don't even

exist

in their attempts to explain away some

passages and such was the case in John

1:1 the way they have translated this in

their New World

Translation is in the beginning was the

word the word was with God and the Word

was a god inserting that little article

a and yet that is inconsistent with

their whole uh belief system because

they believe only one God and yet if the

word was a God then you have two Gods

the thing that they're constantly

accusing us of believing

in but there is absolutely no possible

way that the Greek language could be

translated and the Word was a God it is

it's absolutely

impossible and it is a it's a perversion

it is a lie it isn't what the Greek

language says literally the Greek

language is and God was the

word and it is a

declaration that the word that is

referred to here in the first chapter of

John is indeed the

eternal self-existent

God who created the universe as you go

into verse

three now from verse one in the

beginning was the word the word was with

God and the Word was God let's jump now

to verse

because what we will be looking at next

week as we start into verse three and

and on through to verse 13 is what we

call

parenthetical and that is it it's just

sort of an

amplification of the characteristics of

the

word and it brings in John who was sent

to Bear witness of the

word it's parenthetical the

thought goes from verse 1 to verse

14 in the beginning was the word the

word was was with God the Word was God

and the word became

flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld

his glory the glory as of the only

begotten of the

father full of

grace and

truth and and so that is the the thought

as it is carried out leaving out the

parenthetical Parts

between just to get a continuity of

thought is it's just in the beginning

was the word the word was with God the

Word was God and the Word was made flesh

he dwelt among us we beheld his glory as

of the only begotten of the father full

of grace and truth let's take it a

little bit further let's divide the

three statements of verse one with the

three statements of verse

14 putting the first of each verse

together the second statement of each

verse together and the third statement

of each verse together it comes out like

this in the

beginning was the

word and the Word was made

flesh and dwelt Among

Us and the Word was with

God and we beheld his

glory the glory as of the only begotten

of the father and the Word was God full

of grace and

truth and you see how they so completely

tie

together the thought is just the

continuation in the beginning was the

word and the Word was made flesh and

dwelt Among

Us and the Word was with

God and we beheld his

glory the glory as of the only begotten

of the

father and the Word was God full of

grace and

truth let's look at the way John opened

his first

epistle 1 John

1:1 thinking again of in the beginning

was the word the word was with God and

the Word was

God that which

was

from the

beginning and the Word was made flesh

which we have heard which we have seen

with our eyes which we have looked upon

and our hands have touched or handled of

the word of life for that life was

manifested and we have seen it and bear

witness and show unto you that eternal

life which was with the father and was

manifested unto us and so you see how

the first two verses of of John's

epistle tied together with the first and

14th verse of the Gospel of

John he's declaring the same thing they

they are just

intricately tied together in a very

beautiful

way John is declaring to

us the truth of the

Incarnation the word became

flesh and dwelt Among

Us the Eternal

God not known by

man except by

Revelation became

flesh the

word which does reveal the

thought in order that we might know the

truth about

God the first verse of the book of

Hebrews

also uh

has the Declaration that God who at

sunry time

and in diverse

ways or in different times and in

different ways spoke in times past to

the fathers by the prophets has in these

last days spoken unto us how the word by

his dear

son so he is the expression of

God he is the word of God by which God

is revealed to

man God became

flesh Philippians chapter 2 let this

mind be in you which also was in Christ

Jesus who being in the form of God and

thought it not something to be grasped

to be equal with God yet came in the

likeness of

man the word became flesh and he dwelt

Among

Us the Glorious

truth concerning Jesus

Christ the word was with

God and the Word was

God now beginning with verse three John

is going to tell us many things

concerning this

word and in our lesson next week we'll

get into these things that John declares

to us concerning the

word but

establishing solidly the

fact that Jesus Christ the word is

God in the beginning he

existed

but he was manifested in the flesh that

which was

eternal brok into the time

continuum and he lived for a time as a

man among

men he prayed father glorify me with the

glory that I had with you before the

world ever

existed

existing with the father in the

beginning God Elohim

plural let us make man in our image or

in our likeness after our

image so

important that we

understand the

divine nature of Jesus God manifested In

the Flesh that's what John is going to

seek to convince you of as we go through

the

gospel that you might believe that Jesus

is the Messiah the Son of the Living God

and he's going to be pulling out

incidences throughout his entire life

that prove the fact that he was the

Messiah the Son of the Living God father

we thank you tonight for the

Revelation for the understanding that we

receive through

words and the understanding we have of

you through the

word Jesus Christ Our

Lord who becomes your

expression the way by which you reveal

yourself to

us helping us to

understand that which we could not have

known apart from the

Revelation as we study may we with

John behold Your

Glory as

revealed through Jesus

Christ and may we come Lord to

experience your

grace

and

know the

truth in Jesus

name amen shall we

stand may the Lord be with you and

guide you in the

truth as he reveals himself to you

through Jesus

Christ one day Jesus said to his

wondering

disciples who were confused at the

things that he was saying because he

said I'm going where you cannot come

now I'm going to the father but I'll

come

back and receive reive you under

myself and they were troubled by his

sayings and Philip finally just cried

out Lord if you'll just show us the

father we'll be

satisfied and Jesus said have I been so

long A Time With You Phillip and haven't

you seen

me he who has seen

me has seen the

father how sayest thou then show us the

father so he came to reveal God to

us if you want to know what God is

like if you want to know how God

thinks we need to look at Jesus and what

do we see

grace

truth we beheld his glory as of the only

begotten of the father full of

grace and

truth that's his Revelation to us of

God God is filled with

grace he is the

truth and may you experience that great

and walk in that

truth in jesus' name the Lord bless thee

Lord bless and keep

thee keep the the Lord

make his face to shine upon

thee and be

gracious unto thee and be

gracious unto thee the Lord lift up Lord

lift up his

countenance his countenance upon thee

and give thee
