Now, traditionally,
Christmas music

has celebrated the birth
of the Christ child,

and a favorite British carol,
"The Holly and The Ivy,"

are no exception.

For hundreds of years,
these two flowering plants

have been regarded as
symbols of the Holy Infant

and His mother, Mary.

And who better to sing about
them than a gifted artist who

knows all about
the joy of children

and motherhood at Christmastime?

So, please welcome
accomplished star

of stage, film, and
television, Megan Hilty.

In so many ways, we relate
to the Christmas story

because it happened in
such humble circumstances

in a crowded village, a common
stable, a lowly manger bed.

But the account
of the holy birth

is universal in another way.

The Christ child was
born into a family.

And today, whether our
families are large or small,

whether we're happily
together or alone and apart,

the spirit of Christmas
deepens our desire for family,

for the one we have and
the one we hope will be.

[MEGAN HILTY]
That is so true, Neal.

There's nothing
more that I love

than being home with my husband
and our two beautiful children

during the holidays.

Now, we decorate early

in November, on our
wedding anniversary.

And Christmas morning, we always
make my mother's famous cheesy

potato casserole.

It's delicious.

It's times like those that
we feel connection to parents

and even ancestors.

Now, I'm part Irish, and
my husband is very Irish.

Both his grandparents
came from Ireland.

I mean, his last
name's Gallagher,

so it doesn't get much
more Irish than that.

So when the holidays
come around,

we naturally inherit a bit
of the Irish whimsy and fun.

Wherever you come from, here
is a tribute to family,

to my family and
yours this Christmas.

It's not unusual for
the spirit of Christmas

to create a feeling of
family, even among people

of diverse ages and
backgrounds. Like the figurines

in a Christmas creche, when
we gather around the manger,

when we see one another
across the manger,

we become one.

Which is why we sing
"Nowell" at Christmas.

It's a word that means birth.

And nothing brings
the world together

like the birth of a child.

So we say, "Nowell everyone!

The Child is born!"

And as we celebrate His
birth, we become family

from the lowliest of servants
to the masters in this hall.

There's something very
special about sharing

the music of our heritage.

Now, I know how much it means
to me and to my new friend, film

and television actor, director,
and producer Neal McDonough.

The reason I love
the Irish jig so much

is because I grew up a
devout Irish Catholic

in Boston, Massachusetts.

My parents emigrated
from Ireland

in the late 40s and early 50s.

They met each other in
Boston, and they raised us

six kids with such a
love for our homeland.

Now, even though my wife,
Ruv�, is from South Africa,

and our five children
were born in Los Angeles,

we're never far from
my Irish heritage,

for which I'm so grateful.

I'm really honored to share a
part of that heritage tonight

with you.

He is Christ the Lord
all knowing. #

In Ireland, the
land of my ancestors,

Christmas traditions have given
the holidays a profound sense

of meaning and purpose.

They help families welcome the
Christ child into their lives,

both on Christmas Day
and throughout the year.

For the generations before me,
that meant cleaning the barn,

white washing the
cottage, scrubbing floors,

ironing linens, and cooking a
special meal for family coming

home.

As the Irish love to say,
"N�l Aon Tinte�n Mar

Do Thinte�n F�in."

There's no hearth like your
own hearth, or in other words,

there's no place like home.

And that's especially
true at Christmas.

Now today, while our family
lives far from the Emerald

Isle, we still get
ready for Christmas

in some of the traditional ways.

But our most
important preparation

has to do with our hearts,

with remembering others,
reconciling differences,

and returning kindnesses.

Even the old Irish custom
of a Christmas morning dip

in the icy sea,

well, that was an invitation
to wash away the old

and begin anew to welcome
the Christ child into hearts

made clean and pure for Him.

(CHOIR SINGING) # Dress the

# Make Him room among
us living, For His love
and sweet forgiving #

# and the hope of ever-living. #

One Irish Christmas
tradition that

has spread across the world is
placing a candle in the window.

It recalls the Holy
Family seeking shelter

but finding no room in the inn.

For my ancestors, a candle
shining in the darkness

was an assurance that
Mary and Joseph would have

been welcomed into their homes.

It was also a sign
that the poor, the weary,

and the downtrodden
could find refuge within.

Of course, light in the
darkness is also a symbol

of the Christ child himself,

the light of the world.

In our time, whether it's a
candle in the window or light

in our eyes, Christmas
is a time to signal

that we're willing to love
and serve those in need,

sometimes in our homes,
but always in our hearts.

(CHOIR SINGING) # Light a
candle, trim it bright, #

# set it in the window
shining for the lonely one #

# who's pining #

# Seeking bread and
milk for dining. #

# Light a candle
trim it bright. #

In towns and villages
across the island,

the Irish live simply.

But that doesn't keep them
from decorating their homes

for Christmas.

And the most
universal decoration

is available to both
rich and poor alike.

It's the humble holly
bush with its thorned

leaves and bright red berries.

In the days of my
grandparents, children

would be sent out to scour the
hills for holly branches, which

would then be fashioned
into a traditional wreath

and hung on the
wooden cottage door.

It made perfect sense
back then, for holly

is a symbol of the Holy child,

the Child who would one
day wear a crown of thorns,

and whose drops of blood would
symbolize His sacrifice for all

humankind.

That sharp crown and
those crimson droplets

are a reminder that
none of us suffer alone.

And for believers
in Christ, it's

an assurance that He was born
to heal, and comfort, and redeem

us from the sorrows of life.

This is perhaps the most
comforting symbol of all,

that the spirit of Christmas
is the spirit of hope

and making the holidays
truly holy days,

now and all year through.

# leaves concealing. Droplet
berries each revealing #

# in his suffering there
is healing. Gather holly #

Answering a tax decree
from Caesar Augustus,

Mary and Joseph returned
to Bethlehem, the homeland

of their ancestors.

As prophesied while
they were there,

the days were accomplished
that Mary should be delivered,

and she brought forth
her firstborn son,

and laid him in a
manger, because there was

no room for them in the inn.

It was an incomparable event,
but if their experience was

even remotely like the
experience my wife, Ruv�, and I

had when our five
children were born, well,

joy is not a strong enough
word to convey the feelings

in their hearts, which is
why we sing joy to the world.

For the symbol of a newborn baby
is a reminder that Christmas is

an opportunity for all of
us to begin again to walk

in a newness of life ourselves,
for which we Irish say

"Bu�ochas le Dia".

Thanks be to God for
all His blessings,

especially the
blessings of Christmas.
