Do you know Richard,

that when I first came
into this house

with my typewriter,

on that March day in 1912,

just four and a half years ago,

I thought there was just
one family living here.

The Bellamy family.

And that down below in
the bowels of the house

was a collection of slaves.

Men and women all working away

like they do in mills
and factories.

But I was wrong.

There are two families
living in this house.

There's us, the Bellamy's,

and then there's the
family downstairs.

With father Hudson,
mother Bridges,

and their son Edward,
who's in the army now

and so proud of him we are.

Then there's the eldest
daughter Rose,

who lost her young
man at the front,

and the two youngest daughters.

- No. One's a daughter-in-law,
Daisy,

married to Edward, who
lives with her in-laws.

- Yes.

Then Ruby the youngest.

Rather, simple child.

Perhaps one day,

we'll all be one big
family, not two.

- I think we are now,
in one sense.

As for the future,
I have my doubts.

But then tomorrow's
a long way off.
