It was tough before,

Right away in our car
ride into our insertion point,

we saw a young zebra
completely torn apart,

and just bones after bones.

Everywhere you stepped,
there was a sign of a predator.

No longer the top
of the food chain.

Yeah, when we first were
inserted, we walked down,

our satchels,
log right behind it,

blood splatter all over it.

Our shelter -- blood
splatter right there.

Look at all the
blood. That's crazy.

The animals -- they're
way more sneaky.

The predators are so
much more aggressive.

They're not like the animals
here in North America.

That's all blood
from another kill.

I think we need
to get going, yeah?

As I first headed
in, I realized quickly

that there was a possibility
that I would die out there.

Outside of baboons,

that's the other animal
that I fear out here.

There wasn't a
single time out there

that I felt like we were
dominant over anything.

-When you go into Africa,

you automatically
think hot and dry.

Yeah.

We experienced it all out there.

It was painful before.
It hasn't changed.

-[ Laughs ]

] Dude, it's hot.

I think my feet are blistering.

This location was
so unpredictable.

It was like hot,
cold, rainy, sun.

I mean, we
struggled with the sun.

I mean, it's a
deadly combination.

The sun is a lion.

Yeah, but sometimes,
lions are friendly.

[ Laughs ]

Come on, sun, give us a break.

From day 1, building the
boma in the sun all day --

I got my ass handed to me.

I would get blisters, and
it would burn over that.

I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Duck: Mel. What?

There's got to be
Thorn trees in the shade.

This is gonna be
red blistering time

if you stand out there.

This ground is [bleep] brutal.

-Is there some on my back?

That ain't good.

Honestly, that was
almost it for me.

It was almost too much.

I was feeling bad just
watching her, you know?

Her butt glows
like a neon light.

[ Laughter ] And it turned red!

Well, you're completely exposed.

Kaila: Yes, I w--
completely exposed, yes.

There was no material
growing there to chop down

to bring around to
make any shade,

so trying to build bomas out
there was nearly impossible.

Matt: Nothing green, nothing --

you want to build a
nice, beautiful shelter,

and there is nothing.

Our boma was not built well.
We had a huge hole in our door.

Kaila: You guys had, like,
tomahawks and machetes, like, big --

-we did not.
-We all -- all three of us

brought small, little
bushcraft blades, so...

-Ooh.
-...We had to drag stuff,

and we had to go
so far out and drag it,

and doing that naked
and barefoot... [ Chuckles ]

we are not gonna finish
our boma by tomorrow night.

Kaila: When the ranger
came up and told us,

"you have to build it 4
feet thick and 6 feet tall

because there are two male lions

that have killed poachers,"

it kind of was the wake-up
call that we needed.

Like, "oh, my gosh.
This is serious."

Kaila: This whole
wall we need to fill in.

Like, we still have all of this.

We're [bleep]

There's no way.
Like, there's no way.

I mean, what were
your thoughts, though,

when they first said
they've taken two poachers?

-Yeah.
-It was terrifying to hear that.

The thing with, like, lions

is they're not predatorial
towards human,

but once they realize that
humans are easy to acquire...

-Yes.
-Mm-hmm.

...then they will go
out and seek humans.

So we're like, "holy crap!

We're in an area
with man-eating lion."

Well, the fact that
they were both together

makes them more confident,

and they play off of each other.

On night 1, we heard
chuffing right around our boma,

and chuffing's the sound
-- like, it's not purring,

but it's, like, the mouth
sound that you hear.

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Animal growling ]

-Lindsey.
-Yeah?

What'd we just hear?

We just heard a lion.

That [grunting]

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Lion chuffing ]

There's definitely a lion.

We can hear him.

[ Chuffing continues ]

[ Lion growls ]

That's the thing about
the boma, though,

is it's supposed to
keep animals out,

but if those animals don't
care, it's keeping you in.

Matt: There was
constantly jackals.

There was constant
stuff all night long.

Can I defend myself
from a predator?

Hopefully, you know? [ Laughs ]

Lacey: It was dangerous
-- I mean, there were

so many things out
there that could kill us.

♪♪

[ Rustling ]

Matt: Something's walking.

It's right outside my shelter.

[ Leopards growling ]

I am hearing a lot of leopards.

Something just
eating the [bleep]

Out of something else over here.

[ Leopard growls ]

That was my first boma,
and when I heard that,

it was eating something
next to my shelter --

it literally attacked an
impala, was eating it,

and I'm just sitting there, and
I was like, "wow," you know?

Like, I don't have
enough human footprint

to actually establish an area,

'cause I'm not
talking to anybody.

I'm not making any
noises during the day.

Leopards would just come up
and sniff on that boma nightly.

And so I'd walk around
and piss all over it,

and I was like,
"just this area."

-"It's mine."
-"...It's mine."

[ Laughter ] Yeah.

The first couple nights
were the worst in that level,

and you didn't know
really what was out there

or how aggressive
they were gonna be.

You just heard them, and
they were getting closer.

It was like, "holy
cow! This is quite real."

[ Chuckles ]

[ Branches creak ]

Shane: Yo, Clarence?

Clarence, get your ass up.

Lacey: Hey!

-Hippos?
-Stop. Yeah. See them?

-Where? No.
-They're big.

[ Hippo grunts ]

Grab me two more arrows
out that pile right there, please.

I am.

[ Birds chirping ]

Birds started speaking again,
so maybe he went the other way.

It scared the living
[bleep] out of me.

All I heard was... Pbht!

[ Laughs ] That's all I heard.

-Oh, my god.
-Dude, shut up.

"Don't run, just scream."

-[ Laughs ]
-You got a high-pitched scream.

-That was terrifying.

worst killers in Africa?

Honestly, when your
adrenaline's pumping like that,

you just make loud
noises and scream,

and Shane's got the bow,

and I'm thinking the bow's
not gonna kill the hippo.

It's gonna piss
it off really bad.

Really bad, yes. [ Laughter ]

And then the next morning,
we see, like, these huge prints.

And then, even
scarier, little baby prints.

-Yeah.
-Ohh.

Yes, so we had
a family of hippos.

I don't know about you, but
I think we really lucked out

because that night
that the zebras came --

it's "zehb-ra," by
the way... [ Laughter ]

...we were, like, lying in
the boma, and we heard --

it was like a screech,
like this growl.

[ Insects chirping ]

It's gonna come out of my chest.

It was -- yeah.

Talking about a full-on
zebra stampede right at ya.

I mean, it's an absolute
predator's dream place, really.

It's end of a drought.
Animals are weaker.

All the water's concentrated.
There's no leaves on the trees.

They can see them coming.

It's absolutely what a
predator wants to kill,

and that's why the predators -are doing well...
-Yeah.

...as we all heard
them every night.

It's made for them.

Just got a beautiful
warthog down.

[ Bird screeches ] Damn it.

Emotionally, it wrecks a guy.

Gary: I ate the brains, the
eyeballs, and the tongue

of that thing.

We don't know what
we're getting with Gary.

Sleeping is his main thing.

why you went to them

It is so windy up

We didn't have this
many clouds yesterday.

It was pretty much clear skies.

If it rains tonight, we'll

Damn little African
tornado like to got me.

I thought the most
difficult part about this "xl"

was the environment.

The weather,
temperature changes --

I mean, 42 degrees at
night to 110 in the day,

10 hours of 50-degree wanes,
consistent, like, 3 or 4 days.

It was insane.

Yeah, when I'm looking
at clouds coming over,

and I'm thinking, "oh, good,"

because my opinion of Africa

is sunshine, hot,
just beat-down heat.

So I'm seeing clouds and
thinking, "oh, this is awesome.

We've got it made when
we have cloud cover,"

but that was not
the case out there.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Trent: We are totally
exposed out here.

Trying to put together a
shelter, but it's not done yet.

We're surrounded by trees,

but it's not
protecting us at all.

When those clouds rolled
in, that temperature dropped,

and it started raining,

and it doesn't rain for
five minutes out there --

it rains for hours and hours.

It was so cold, and
Clarence had just left,

and I'm thinking,

"man, I could use some
Clarence right now."

[ Man chuckles ]

We had made a
pretty good shelter,

but that rain was
coming at us sideways,

and that was the first moment
when I thought to myself,

"why am I out here?"

I was prepared to leave
my family, leave my job...

Leave my life... [Sniffles]

And survive out
here for 40 days.

I didn't know... [
Breathes sharply ]

I didn't know it was
gonna get this cold.

[ Rubbing hands ]

Damn it.

I wanted redemption, but
I don't know if I can last.

I -- honest to god,
I thought that was

a life-and-death
situation for Shane and I.

It was the roughest night.

Matt, how did you do it alone?

-I didn't cuddle.

[ Thunder crashing ]

And now it's starting to rain.

Night 6 sucks -- it sucks bad.

At that point right there
when that storm hit,

I'd actually had two
impala down already,

so I had one tan
hide I put over me,

the other tanned
hide on top of me,

and I'm like,
"oh, this is fine,"

and then I thought,
"[Bleep] Damn it,

I'm a lot bigger than a
couple impala hides."

[ Laughter ]

Need to figure out a way

to make a proper roof
in this environment.

[ Thunder crashing ] I
don't know how to do it yet

besides shooting
something bigger

and making a roof
out of the hide skin.

So, it was coming in
sideways, and I was like, "okay."

-Yeah.
-Here, I got this lean-to,

and now it's coming
that direction.

-[ Laughing ] Yeah.
-Yeah.

-Yep.
-I was like, "all right."

Cold got to me really bad,

'cause I have
no body fat at all.

We're so exposed.

There was nothing to
protect us from that rain.

The lightning
would be relentless.

Like, the sky
wouldn't stop flashing.

-Just dancing in there.
-Yep.

[ Thunder crashing ]

Duck don't do the
lightning very well.

[ Thunder crashing ]

In the back of my mind,

and you'd see these
massive bolts coming.

Whoo! You all felt it out there.

-Yeah.
-That was awful.

It's was all night.
It didn't stop.

-There was no relief.
-Mnh-mnh.

It was 10 hours of rain.

Miserable. Going
into that storm,

we didn't have any
shelter whatsoever.

But we had this
kickass Clay oven

that lasted for about
-- [Bleep] Four minutes.

[ Laughter ]

You know, it took -- what
-- three, four days to build?

[ Laughter ]

Gary: Want to build
this potbelly stove for us.

It will protect the
fire from the rain.

One of the ways
I'm gonna do that

is through being
innovative, creative, and...

because I plan on taking

a shelter, but it's not done yet.

We're surrounded by trees,

It was 90 degrees,
and all of a sudden,

at 4:00 P.M., it was hailing.

-Yeah, the hailstorm.

It's like we got freezing
rain, but, really, it was hot.

Like, how do you predict that?

We had that -- we
had that 10-hour rain,

you know, and then I was
like, "fine, it's [bleep] Africa."

You think it's gonna be warm.

I was like, "why don't you
just make it [bleep] snow?

It's fine."

I tried to wait it out
as long as I could --

didn't quite work
out like that, though.

We are not prepared for rain.

If it wasn't for y'all
two, I'd have been gone.

somewhere we can build a roof.

Cold rain will suck

and the lightning was terrible.

It was all around us. It

and told myself

I'm gonna use my
kids as a pick-me-up,

and that kind of backlashed
on me because I miss them.

such an amazing challenge.

and hunting at its finest.

there it is so tough,

'cause I know I'm hungry,

I know everybody that
is with me is hungry,

and I'm out there for hours.

I don't have water,

I'm beating the elements
just like all you guys,

and I keep coming across them.

And when you shoot
and you miss... Ohh.

...and you're
thinking two things --

one, that disappointment
of, "we could have eaten,"

and then the second thought of,

"will I ever get
that chance again?"

That, I think, was probably

the greatest
let-down I've ever had.

Emotionally, it wrecks a guy.

learn really quick

that you need to
become a predator...

just a little bit further

is a hunter's dream.

I'm definitely here
with the expectation

to take down
something that's large.

Once these animals
raise their heads,

you have to
completely stop moving.

Every one of those hunts --
it was -- it was a lot of work.

It was one of those things that,

any wrong move,
and the animal's gone.

We were coming in at
the end of the dry season.

Like, we were coming in
at the worst possible time.

There was nothing for us to eat.

I think scavenging
might be just as much,

if not more dangerous,
than just regular hunting.

You are now competing
with a predator.

It was dangerous.

Yeah. It's part of the game.

You use whatever resources
you can get to see the next day.

It is smart to capitalize
on a scavenged kill.

I've conditioned myself
to believe that it's a desire

to eat rotting meat and maggots.

when it's time to eat
it, this is delicious.

my cat would eat it.

Gary thrives on eating
the grossest things he can.

I don't know if it's
a validation thing.

and then I ate them,

and they were the greatest
thing that I've ever had.

I'm literally up to my elbows
in warthog and impala.

The only thing I'm lacking

is I wish I could share
it with the "xl" people

that are out here somewhere,
and I hope aren't hungry --

them and help them.

know I was out there,

but I knew every single

and I was like, "that's your
guys' portion over there,"

I didn't eat it eventually,

I was wishing to have

So right about day 10, I
thought I'm gonna go out,

see if I might be able to find
some of the other survivalists.

here with mopane bees.

And if I can find that hive, I
can actually get some honey.

So, those mopane bees,
what they'll do is they're --

they make a hive in
these mopane trees.

I've been to this shelter

and there was three survivalists

that I almost guarantee
walked by this tree,

probably sat under
this tree for shade,

and they didn't know this --
this honey pot was sitting here.

when I showed up.

I felt like a little puppy
coming up to the door

true survival skills,

so when I speak up
they all look at me like...

They doubt. They question.

but with my team
and their perspective

wasn't viewed that way.

What kind of like upset me
was, like, you had it in our boma,

and you didn't ask anybody

what their opinions were on it.

But you just had it in the boma,

and we all were
disturbed by the smell,

when we're trying to sleep.

something's going on.

It's not just fatigue.

It's -- my immune system
probably went down,

something came in, and, I
mean, my head is just throbbing.

This 40-day challenge --

it was hard on my
body, that malaria.

That drain of energy and
that migraine headache --

a soul that was being,
like, sucked out of you.

Our morale was
so low at that point.

We were having
such a crappy time.

Just -- the energy was so bad.

Watching you deplete
to a skeletor -- no offense.

I'm probably down to
less than 1% body fat.

My body is deteriorating
away from me.

I had my mental toughness,

in a really good spot.

I think, as a group, we knew
something needed to happen

Every day, I was out there,

trying to find
protein for the team.

what that felt like.

Now, day 34 when
I let go of that arrow

and I watched it find its Mark
was so cool, and I was like,

"god, this can't
hardly get any better."
