The last record I was
sort of at the end of

my rope.

And we desperately
needed a break

so that summer

we took about a month off

I set up a small studio

and I just started making
demos, just started

kind of doing it for myself

just to keep things going.

I think sometimes taking time
off feels dangerous to me

because

I just like playing music, it's
just what I do, I'm addicted to it.

And what I noticed,
what happens to bands

that, quote-unquote
"take time off"

they're not as good
when they come back.

For us just like keep
that evolution going,

let you audience grow with you,

and grow up with you,

and--and at some point
grow old with you.

It's that cliché where, it's
kind of like a marriage.

You got to reinvent ways
to fuck or something.

You know, it's the same thing with like
writing songs and being in a band together.

We're like an old
race car, that way,

you got to keep it tuned up, or
it's just gonna sit there and rust.

Because the last
two records were

made pretty much in a
studio atmosphere only

we really, what we
wanted to do is get into

a room together and start
patching up the songs together.

Just something that sounded more

just like stripped
down rock'n'roll.

That collaborative effort,
it just sort of like

always being together with
each other and playing

like the way we used to do it

in the practice
room first and then

once you're ready,
then you go recording.

Stacked our flags up and
it sort of damped the room

and made our roof dead, it's
kind of a sweat box sort of

you know, very
venereal, very uh--

very up-close and personal.

There was a sort of looseness that
we were allowing ourselves to have.

We used to playing off of
everybody else, you know

you're just kind of shooting
from the hip with instinct.

I think that allowed us to

reach into areas that
we might not have done.

Well, when--when did
Nimrod come out? '97?

- '98?
- '97.

I was working at the record
store when it came out.

"Lyrical nightmare".

The record?

I had half, it was,
it was 18 songs

18 and then--and
then an extra 4.

I just had to write
lyrics in the studio

but then I vowed to myself,

"I would never go into the
studio without lyrics

ever again."

The songs are like
a form of chaos

that you can't control.

It's a form of
intelligence that maybe

you only understand

and you hope that someone
else can understand.

And you can be anyway you want.

You can be as
grandiose as you want

or you can be as down in
the gutter as you want.

It's just sort of whatever

emotional freeway that
you're on at the time.

You can like, be--but, you can probably
go on your verse right after that

and then use that as sort of

bridge instrumental
bit or something.

That could be good--a
cool thing, though.

It really could man,
you know, if--if

you know, we put Tré behind
it to just fucking go nuts.

I thought in the middle
it was really good.

Everything was important
about making this record.

And having completely
different atmospheres

so we were at the
beach for a while.

We were in Oakland for a while

which is its own environment

you know, I always kind
of call Oakland as

sort of like the
Detroit of California.

You just got a different
vibe when you change towns,

and change feels, you know.

You get out of your everyday
thing, and for me lyrically

a list of ideas just
starts to pile up.

When you travel

as a band, even if it's just as
going down to Southern California,

I mean let's face it,
this is our gang, man

you know, it's empowering

and it gives you a
swagger, and it gives you

I don't know, it gives
you a reason to

feel badass and I think
everybody needs that.

distinctive in its own

the rest is filling", you know.

They threw a ballad

And then they end it
with some bullshit.

Most records you don't get to
the end of 'cause it sucks.

The last time that we played and
recorded songs live for people

was in the Kerplunk!

and Dookie days, so

kind of like a throwback and sort
of like being in a new band.

Those were good litmus tests.

You learn more about the songs

a lot faster

by playing in front
of a group of people

than you do recorded version.

Playing in clubs is really
important to us because

it just keeps us energized.

We were just kind of basically treating
ourselves like an opening band.

We needed to scare the
shit out of ourselves

a little bit.

And, I mean, it was talking about throwing
your entire band into a freezing-cold pool.

We were so used to
presenting ourselves before

for a many years, you know

especially in the last eight years,
we really knew we had a presentation.

This time we had nothing.

It was back to that
"okay, prove it to me".

People were just kind of

listening.

And makes you freak out that
people don't freak out.

We've actually made the progress
that we would have made as

like being a young--young
kids in a band

in the sense that like you
play one show and then you

you really stew on like

what you did wrong and
what you did right.

You try and improve on those little
areas and improve the setlist.

You know, there's just something
to be learned from it.

"Hi, I'm Rob Cavallo,

working on this--working
on a session right now

just producing, that's all."

to think of it is, like

and they add up to one thing

then when you get it

That's a big,
powerful statement.

His way of making records is
to immerse himself in them.

That's what we needed,
we needed that, you know

that fifth Beatle.

He heard the new material

he totally got it

he got really excited by it

and then he just kind of
rekindled the friendship.

After that too, you know

and then we really wanted to record
our record in Oakland and

he came to Oakland
the whole time

so it was good, it was good to
bring him back into the fold

bring him back on to the team.

It's kind of in a way, it's the closest
to sort of Dookie era of sound

where it's like, you know

bass drums, guitars,
and vocals in the lead

and that's like pretty much it.

However, it's also not
Dookie in the sense that

these guitars sounds are different,
they're sort of less distorted

and in a way it leaves more room for drums
and bass and kind of a sexier groove

or ante-rock'n'roll feel.

I mean, you hear every snap of
every picking across the strings

every flicker there is
on the drums and bass

it's just

really pure.

vintage Green Day

but it's just like fun, it's

go into something
that's sort of more

into like a--like a um

redemption or something.

that's kind of what

the way I sort of look
at the three records.

I think there's things that this
band can do and Billie can do

as a songwriter that

people still don't know about.

It's everything you fill in there like from
the band's entire career, but it's brand new.

It's serious and dark.

It's light and fun.

It's everything rolled together
and it's all--a whole new

character of Green Day that
people had never heard before.

That I've never heard before.

It's interesting how things
started off as stripped down

but then

ends up becoming
something so epic.

I'm having the kind of
excitement right now that

that we did have when we put
out Dookie or American Idiot.

I just feel like there's something
really special that happens

when we're firing on all
cylinders like this

and when you see the arc of
the three of these records

you're going to fully understand

where Green Day was at, at
that point of their career.
