the competitiveness,

like, really hindered
Melissa and I,

and, like, I really just
don't want to focus on it.

Chance: I like being
the gray man in a group.

I like just keeping
my mouth shut

and letting my
actions speak for itself.

It works well for me.

I can be quiet, and
nobody really even notices.

It's not competitiveness.

It's just being respectful
and considerate.

I don't like to be called
"woman," "honey," "sweetheart."

It's a different situation
when you're a woman.

I don't have a lot of experience
working as a team with women

'cause ranger battalion
is exclusively male.

So it's not so much that I
have an issue with females.

It's more of a
lack of experience.

No, I'd rather somebody
show me how first, honestly.

All right, so, the way I throw,

and I'm willing to

I naturally gravitate
towards alphas and males,

so it's easier for me

to establish a bond and
a working relationship

with that personality type.

it gave a new meaning
to this challenge for me.

All of a sudden, chance
comes into my life,

and I'm just incredibly
eager to want to help him out.

Chance: If I'm
going to stay longer

and stay with this group,

I feel like it would be
helpful for the team

to get to know a little
about my background.

I had a four-month to Iraq,

and then six months
to Afghanistan,

going into areas where
conventional borders

hadn't been in at
least four years.

It was during the
special operations surge.

Lost a lot of buddies
that deployment,

so that one sucked the most.

Just as a soldier, like, I
felt like I had to be numb,

I had to be cold,

I had to change who I
was to do my job effectively,

and I did,

but then it crumbled everything
else once I got back home.

Once you kind of wire your
thinking in a certain pattern,

army doesn't, like, unwire you.

The side effects of war...

You don't really realize them

until it's [bleep]
crash and burn.

Fernando: Today, chance
opened up about his past

and his military time

and the challenges he
faced during his deployments.

I was an alcoholic,

staring down my barrel
every day last year.

Now I'm good to go.

Chance is not
ashamed to share, like,

really dark parts of his past.

I imagine they have
trained, like, psychologists

to help with the PTSD, right?

I've got more help
from my ranger buddies

than I ever have
from any program.

Russell: Chance... He's
had a pretty rough life.

Question is... Is chance
mentally prepared

to do the 40-day challenge?

to kill all of them

by crunching them,

but as you can tell, the
whole ground moves.

It's wet, miserable,

with nowhere to go
and hide from these ants.

They are tearing
us apart right now.

At this point, we may
have to abandon our shelter.

Absolutely horrible.

That was [bleep]
extremely brutal last night.

Yeah.

That was really taxing on us.

Yeah.

Chance: We had
the rain from all night,

and midway throughout the night,

there's this
infestation of ants.

It was like the entire
shelter just got swarmed,

and they just got worse
and worse and worse.

- So brutal.

Fernando: It'll make
you lose your mind,

getting bit over and
over and over again.

Honestly, I'm feeling really
depressed and kind of apathetic,

like, even, about everything.

Shannon: The
ants... they're terrible.

That's the only
thing that I don't like

about being out there.

Get more encendio.

Narrator: The sap that flows

from the tree locally
known as "encendio"

gives off a fume
similar to turpentine,

making it ideal
for fire-starting

or repelling biting insects.

We need to get some
good food, good protein.

Our bodies are really
getting worked from the jungle.

We're just running
low on everything.

We're using everything up.

It's just not as
easy as it once was.

And it's warranted.

And it's a lot easier to
work and stay focused

when you don't

back through all this

to throw on the plate

feeling really frustrated

with the way that
just went down.

there's a lot of pride issues

I've shot deer before.

Stalking in the woods

is something that
I am proficient in...

Not so much basket-weaving
or shelter-building,

but this is like what I did
in the military... ranging.

Ranger. Raids, ambushes.

I don't deal well
the way they do

in talking peacefully and
having communal talks.

I'm a very aggressive person.

I've performed at a very
elite level in the military,

and our speciality
was direction action...

Raids and ambushes.

Silent approach.

Stealthily killing
somebody in the woods

is not much different

from stealthily walking in
the woods towards an animal.

Amber: Chance
worries me a little bit.

I was kind of like, "holy hell."

I'm just gonna make sure

everything is taken
away from him,

no knifes around him,
nothing crazy like that.

My entire career in the
military was based around, like,

stealthily creeping
into people's houses

without them waking,

and putting barrels in their
faces without them knowing.

he actually has

really dark parts of
his past, so that's scary.

Chance: Most of my buddies,
when we have arguments,

it ends up in fistfights,
and then we hug,

and I can't do that here.

It's just frustrating.

I feel dumbed down.
