and find the perfect buyers.

a point in life

where they wonder,
"What's next?"

For me,
after years with Priestly,

I've decided to go all in.

This year, I've taken
a huge gamble.

I've opened up my own business,
Flashback Salvage.

I love the salvage,
love the history.

Ted has traded his caboose

for a 100-year-old
train station,

in Orillia, Ontario.

[Ted] I needed a retail spot,
and I lucked into this one.

I saw a posting online
the train station was available

and I thought,
"Just do it."

[narrator] Grand Trunk Railway
built their first station

in Orillia
on this site in 1897.

It burned down in 1916,
but they rebuilt and opened

the current building
in 1917.

The Orillia station
was a critical hub

for passenger service,
connecting busy urban centres

with the rest
of North America.

[Ted] The character
of this space is unbelievable.

I like the original lights,
I love the arches.

Beautiful,
just walking in there,

it's a little bit of history.

We've got
over 4,000 square feet.

I got space
for a workshop.

What more
could you ask for?

Getting this place ready
has been a lot of work,

but to me,
it's a labour of love.

I'm laying it
all on the line.

I've put
everything I have into this,

including my reputation.

I have no choice
but to make it work.

Got the space?

Now I need the jobs
and staff to help,

so I've
reached out to Brandon,

praying he'll join me,

because without a team
I am screwed.

Brandon has come
a long way

since he started
with me in this business.

on a site,

figured he best
come play with us.

when I first met him,

you could see a hint
of something in Brandon.

He's young,
he's strong, eager to learn,

and I am more than happy

to teach him
everything I know.

where I'm taking him today.

I've lined up
a huge metal factory,

research facility was there.

They're cleaning it out.

what we're looking for.

Hawkins was founded in 1902

and eventually grew to be
one of the most important

aluminum companies
in the world.

Ted and Brandon
are heading to the former

alkane sheet metal plant
in Kingston, Ontario.

it was built in 1939
to help supply vital parts

for Allied air forces
in World War II.

The scientific research
and testing facility

was built on site in 1942,

and for decades
researchers here made

great advances
in the manufacturing

of components
for the world's aviation

and automotive industries.

[rock music]

This is serious this year,
because I'm on my own.

Yeah, the stakes
are raised this year.

-Big time.
-Glad you came along.

And like I say,
we'll get some more help.

I think we're gonna have
a huge year ahead of us.

[Ted] Yeah, man,
it's gonna be cool.

with the new business is
finding the best salvage jobs.

They'll come from word
of mouth, scanning the trades,

and keeping
his ear to the ground.

Lots of potential clients
are looking to clear out

old properties before
they're demolished.

The hard part is finding
them before it's too late.

[Ted]
It's a pretty cool place.

[Ted] Steve's giving me
a clear target

to find some
great vintage lab equipment,

but I'm always on the hunt
for other pieces I can sell.

[Ted] Brandon and I can only
look at so much of this stuff.

They have tenants that
are eager to get in there,

and they gave me a day
to salvage whatever I can.

[Brandon] This looks like
a big tool chest over here,

but it's got a vintage look.

It's like '30s or '40s.

[Ted] Like a microscope
of some sort.

That just looks cool.

This is the kind of stuff
I need to find for Steve,

where we've been working

and we have to sell

It's almost like a museum.

so most of my sales
will be by appointment only.

Christie
is a top notch buyer.

She collects decoys.
She's always looking for more.

There is a huge
collectible market for decoys.

[narrator] Duck decoys weren't
prized collectors items

until the mid 20th century.

That's when a magazine called
the Decoy Collectors Guide

was first published,
and it grew the market

by connecting owners
and buyers around the world.

Prices for decoys began
to really grow in the 1960s,

with prized works
going for as much as $10,000.

Today, the most
collectible decoys can fetch

hundreds of thousands
of dollars at auction.

-It's beautiful, isn't she?

[Ted] To find the right buyer
can mean big money,

and I'm hoping Christie
will be my first sale.

on that 38 car

and immediately,
a name comes up.

Boom, Jimmy Howard.
That's the man.

He was a legend
on the stock car scene.

This's going to be
worth some money.

is a Sprint car that belonged

to Jimmy Howard, a racing
legend and mechanical genius

who built race cars for
himself and other top drivers.

Jimmy won
his first championship

with a prototype Sprint car
in 1951,

but the following year,
he built his famous #38

and dominated North American
speedways for over a decade.
