Our second album,
Slave to the Grind,

it debuts at number one.

We're getting
ready to go on tour,

and we were doing a photoshoot
with a good friend of ours,

a real friend, Lonn
Friend, for RIP Magazine.

We're shooting a Skid
Row session with the band

and Sebastian and I go, "Dudes,
you wanna hear something?"

And I popped the
cassette in, and they-

♪ ...lights out, it's less ♪

And Bas goes, "Fuck!"

Nirvana.

♪ Entertain us ♪

♪ I feel stupid and contagious ♪

I'll never forget Rachel
looking at me and going,

"Things are about to change."

I remember this one
particular meeting.

Teen Spirit has come out.

The marketing people are about,

and I remember them
saying, "Don't do anything.

It's working."

And the record just exploded.

Once a band does well,

A&R people start signing bands

that are like that, which is how
the hair metal scene happened,

and that's how the grunge scene

got bigger and
bigger and bigger.

Everybody's flying to Seattle,

like trying to find
the next band.

And a lot of bands out
of Seattle got signed.

♪ But I'm gonna break ♪

♪ I'm gonna break my ♪

♪ I'm gonna break my
rusty cage and run ♪

- All of a sudden MTV...
- ♪ I'm going hungry ♪

♪ I'm going hungry ♪

It's nonstop Temple of
the Dog, Alice in Chains.

♪ I'm the man in the box ♪

- Pearl Jam.
- ♪ Even flow ♪

♪ Thoughts arrive
like butterflies ♪

A long time ago, it's
like a lot of the bands

came from L.A.,
but now it seems like

a lot of the great bands are
coming from the Seattle area.

And Pearl Jam is
one of those bands.

And we're a great band.

You're a great band.

Groups like Pearl Jam

were writing
really strong songs.

So you can't get away
with fluff anymore.

The competition's too fierce.

♪ I nearly lost you there ♪

This new sound was
saying something different

than our collective
hard rock brand of music.

And it was a whole
different culture.

Grunge was an
anti-rockstar thing.

They were more
about music connection,

just a little more thoughtful.

So all these like crazy getup
outfits, that was like gone.

You're not gonna see Eddie
Vedder in buttless chaps.

Thank God.

Grunge, in a lot of the videos,

were exactly what
other videos were,

but that sound and
the look and the attitude

took it into a whole
different direction.

With metal, it was
all about, again,

the exuberance, the excitement.

I started watching
November Rain and it's like,

a guy jumping
through a wedding cake

when it starts to rain.

That absurdity and the
largeness of it, it's too much.

You can see then
Nirvana coming up

with a dog with
the bite collar on.

It's the anti-video.

So do they destroy what's
going on with the metal?

No, but they just said,
"We don't wanna do that."

I liked a lot of
those bands. A lot.

But you know,
there was no reason

to throw the rest
of us in the trash.

I've never heard of a
band getting a bigger buzz

quicker than this band, Nirvana.

- Hi, Riki.
- First of all, love the suit.

- Thanks a lot.
- Be very comfortable

on planes, I think.

People point to grunge,
specifically Nirvana,

as wielding some sort of
Game of Thrones sword

and cutting the heart
out of heavy metal music.

That's ludicrous.

If you say that
grunge killed metal,

you're a fucking idiot.

If you wanna talk
about bands that you say

kill your music scene,
and you're thinking, well,

what about the
biggest artist, Nirvana?

Guess what, people,
you're not saying the G word,

and that's Garth.

In '92, Nirvana, Pearl Jam,
and Red Hot Chili Peppers

sold a combined
9 million albums.

Garth Brooks sold 12.6 million.

were never gonna beat Garth.

And pretty soon, all those
people that were going

to all those rock and roll shows

were going to country shows.

And pretty soon you
started having these

very independent
strong female artists.

Strong women that
had something to say,

and they had
their own festivals.

We had our rock festivals,

they had their Liz
Fair festivals and...

- Lilith Fair.
- What did I say, Lilla Fair?

- Liz Fair.
- Liz Fair?

You meant Lilith Fair.

Yeah.

♪ The water is wide ♪

Lilith Fair.

Those are two totally
different things, aren't they?

You know what's
interesting about genres?

When one shifts and changes,

it needs to be filled
in by something else.

In the same way that
Poison was having

Nothing But a Good Time,

Temple of the Dog was
going on a Hunger Strike.

OK, what's to say
one kills the other?

What killed the Strip?

Hair metal had a
hand in taking itself out.

♪ Whoa, after the rain

As metal evolved, a
lot of bands didn't get it,

and they thought like the image

was the most important thing.

♪ And that's all right ♪

♪ 'Cause that's the way I am ♪

We were doing
this sort of rebellious

but fun kind of music.

There wasn't a lot of
darkness or anything to it.

♪ And I ♪

A lot of colorful
antics going on.

♪ Don't say goodbye ♪

♪ Say you're
gonna stay forever ♪

Like M tley Cr e's not
necessarily the best band,

the best instrumentalists,
but what they were doing

early on was authentic.

What diminished over the course

of the decade was
that authenticity.

When hair metal bands

were no longer
the next big thing,

there was a backlash.

You know, you
become a laughingstock.

A lot of those bands who
went from playing arenas

and theaters were back in clubs.

Some of them
didn't survive at all.

MTV made a left turn.
They just stopped playing it.

That was the media force.

I couldn't get a gig,
lost my record deal,

lost the publishing,
everything was gone.

I was sitting in Rick Krim's
office when somebody came in

and said, "Hey, man, you
got the new Metallica video?"

And it was Nothing Else Matters.

♪ Nothing else matters ♪

And I saw Rick's nervous
face, usher the video out,

making sure I wouldn't go,

"Hey, man, let me check
out the new Metallica video."

♪ Never cared for
what they know ♪

Metallica throwing darts
at my poster in the video,

I didn't typically
think it's cool

to slag off your
fellow musician.

Hey, Butt-Head, check it
out. I'm going as a wuss.

♪ She's only 17, whoo, ah ♪

Our name was toxic.

This was very clear before
Beavis and Butt-Head

and after Beavis and Butt-Head.

This is cool, huh, guys?

Shut up, Stewart.
We're trying to watch TV.

Yeah, yeah.

I mean, I was on the
scene of the crime.

I had my T-shirt
on Stewart's chest.

I am the guy that represents
everything that sucks.

I lost all my confidence.

It really shook me to the
core of my being, you know.

What the hell is your
mom's problem, Stewart?

Yeah. Your mom sucks.

We were no longer a
viable musical entity.

It was horrifying.

There was inner turmoil
in the band a little bit

because we didn't
know what to do.

I didn't see it going anywhere.

So we called it quits.

I needed to do other
things that I liked doing

other than music.

A lot of soul-searching,

spent a lot of time with my dog,

played a lot of golf.

There's not a big
audience for that.

What do you see for
yourself in the next five years?

Well, I don't know.

All of a sudden I felt
it had just been ripped

out from underneath
me, you know?

And I was devastated because
I had nothing else to my life.

Nothing. It was all
that mattered to me.

So I'm not gonna
let that happen again.

So, you know, I don't know.

We'll see.

All right, I see a gem in here.

Our first single, Edge
of a Broken Heart.

I wonder if this
even plays anymore.

We look serious, don't we?

'Cause it was for a metal
magazine and we had to be...

bitchin'.

Looked like my
closet threw up on me.

"Vixen, the Return
of Girl Group Rock."

We brought something
back apparently

that I didn't know
had gone anywhere.

Ooh, "Wild Women's Den."

So my mom actually
got a lot of these.

She'd go up to the
counter with all these

like rock magazines,
and she would go,

"Oh, my daughter, my
daughter's in one of these bands."

You could see my amalgam
fillings in my molars.

So I went and I
got 'em all replaced

with like
tooth-colored fillings.

It says I'm 5'7", 128 pounds.

OK.

She's one of the nicest
people you will ever meet

in your entire life.

She was reforming the band,

wanted to get all the
originals back together.

We were all excited. We
were talking on the phone.

We were getting through
all of the old issues,

just knocking 'em out
of the way one at a time.

And we finally got to the point

where we were ready to do it.

We were gonna make
an announcement.

And she calls up and says,

"Well, we're gonna have
to delay this for a little bit."

It turned out she
had ovarian cancer.

To make matters worse, it
was stage four ovarian cancer.

A couple weeks
later she was gone.

So, yeah.

But at least we had that.

We had the moments
to kind of get through

a lot of old cobwebs that
needed to be removed.

But yeah, she was
something else. Miss her.

They say a manager
is blamed for everything

and credited with nothing.

But for me, it was like,
not just Guns N' Roses.

♪ Welcome to the jungle ♪

♪ Don't need nothin' ♪

- It was Poison.
- ♪ But a good time ♪

♪ He's the one they
call Dr. Feelgood ♪

And it was Motley Crue.

Um... you know.

I had these hopes it would
be forever with these bands,

but it was always sort
of the same scenario

where I would develop
them, and then some corporate

record guy would swoop in
and steal the band somehow.

So I decided that I wanted
to be an A&R person.

The guys are just
wild and crazy guys,

but I'm really proud of
'em, and best of luck.

When they brought me to Geffen,

I was considered a street scout.

I went out every night

and just looked at
bands in the clubs.

Geffen was such that I could
sign one band a year on my own,

and then if I wanted
to sign another band,

I had to go through Tom Zutaut.

I was Tom's last priority.

I would sit in his waiting
room for hours sometimes,

waiting for him to like
take a meeting with me.

It was such a
male-dominated culture,

but I kind of tried to
be one of the guys.

I think that's why I was
able to get as far as I did

in the music business.

Getting the paycheck was
great, and being able to sign bands

to Geffen Records, it was great.

But most nights I felt like I
was having a heart attack

because it was like so insane.

This is West Hollywood!

Where are you guys
gonna be tomorrow night?

We'll be at Camp
Hollywood tomorrow night

- if you wanna show up.
- OK, I'm up.

Well, I was 15 when
I first started partying.

- $5.
- Five bucks? Ooh, baby.

I would go to the
Rainbow and have a couple

of Long Island iced teas
and be out of my mind.

I don't know what
they have in that,

but it's some strong shit.

I had met a doctor that
would write me a prescription

for 30 Quaaludes a month.

It got to the point
where hangovers were

lasting three days.

It's fun until it's
not fun anymore.

And once it's not fun
anymore, it's never fun again.

I started walking dogs
for a living. It got really bad.

The question in my mind
was always, is this all there is?

Welcome to the Crue, Corabi!

They put out a press release

saying that John Corabi's
the new singer for Motley.

For a bit, it was pretty cool.

♪ He's the one they
call Dr. Feelgood ♪

♪ He's the one that
makes you feel all right ♪

It was fun, it was
neurotic, it was hair-raising.

Every adjective you could
think of, that was Motley Crue.

♪ I'm on my way ♪

♪ Home sweet home ♪

Ticket sales were bad,

but everybody was in
that grind at that point.

The only bands that
were really selling tickets

were all the Seattle bands.

We'd started working on
the record Motley Crue.

I don't really see
it like as Motley

intentionally trying to
write a grunge record.

We just jammed.

It was four snot-nosed shitheads
sitting in a room together.

♪ Everybody wants
a piece of the action ♪

And it just kind of
turned it into the record

that it turned into.

♪ Oh, life, it's
misunderstood them ♪

♪ So close your eyes and dream ♪

I love the record, I love the
music that we wrote together

and I think it was
a brilliant record.

♪ Oh ♪

♪ Monkey business, slippin'
on the track, monkey business ♪

That thing that
Rachel had mentioned

in my mom's house,

it's gonna be trouble, we
certainly saw that happening.

Skid Row frontman
Sebastian Bach became

rock's latest embarrassment
this week when a picture

of him wearing a T-shirt
with the declaration

"AIDS kills fags dead"

appeared in "Metal
Edge" magazine.

We had the horrible T-shirt.

The shirt that I was
wearing, as you might know,

-says, "AIDS," it's like the-

- Raid logo.
- It's the Raid, you know,

Raid, it's pretty harsh.

Things started to
get a bit tenuous.

After touring 17 months,
we could not coexist,

mainly with Sebastian,
so we ended up

getting two different
buses for the band.

But I would go back and
forth with Sebastian's bus

just to try to keep some sort
of glue, some sort of bond.

Who the fuck did that,
man? Who the fuck did that?

Was that you, cock sucker?

We had the incident in
Springfield, Massachusetts

of Sebastian
throwing a bottle back

and hitting a female
audience member.

You know what I'm gonna do?
Just get out of the fucking way!

The worst part
about that is someone

got permanently injured
because of someone's actions

that were in our band.

The crowds like hated us.

We were getting spit on.

We were getting bottles
of piss thrown at us.

It was obvious.

When we got done with that tour,

we all went our separate ways.

We didn't say a
word to each other.

I was having massive
panic and anxiety attacks.

This black tidal
wave kept just building

and building and building.

The stigma is, you're
crazy. Put him away.

And that they did.

I can't get a deal.
Lost my deal.

No one's gonna sign me.

I was forced to redefine
myself as a musician.

I moved to Santa Fe, New
Mexico, bought a house,

put a studio in the
house, and thought,

I'm gonna redevelop
the way I create music.

Got three-quarters of the
way through my first solo album

and then my wife got in
a car accident and died.

It was fucking surreal.

There was a lot of
praying going on, man.

I did the same thing
I always did, I just...

went back to the music.

It was at that
moment that I said,

there's nothing else
here for me to do,

so I'm gonna finally
try to do the one thing

I've always wanted to do,

which is write orchestral music.

Learn it on their term.

And I'm gonna compose...

classical music.

The Motley fans,
they're a strange breed.

You wanna hit all these things?

Yeah, if that's
OK, I appreciate it.

How's that?

Some of the fans were
OK with me joining.

These two? And this?

You don't have to do all
that too, if you don't want to.

And then there was
other ones that just

weren't gonna have it at all.

I never saw anybody with a sign,

like, " fuck you," or
"where's Vince," you know?

Everybody that did come
came to have a good time.

It was a really
substantial record.

It's hard for a
frontman to leave,

and for you to have
success with a new frontman.

It's not done.

And Motley had Vince Neil
since, you know, day one.

The studio record prior
to mine sold 12 million.

You know, mine
didn't even do a million.

We had started working on
what became Generation Swine.

As easy, and fun, and
creative as the first record was,

the next record was the
complete antithesis of that.

None of us were getting along.

There was some rumors

going around that maybe
they were talking to Vince,

maybe they weren't.

There was definitely some
tension with a lot of the fans.

And, the minute they brought
Vince back, it was all gone.

And I get it.

I was devastated

that I wasn't gonna
continue on with the band,

but at the same
time, I was relieved.

It's those four
guys, as it should be.

And I'll always be that
little asterisk on the side.

My mom and I.

Is a...

affectionately known
as Mama Snake.

And she was like
the band mom and

we would be
sleeping on her floor,

we'd party 'till four
o'clock in the morning

at her house, she
never said a word.

I'd be like, "Ma, food!"

And she'd get up at
2:30 in the morning

and make us food,
it was incredible.

My dad...

left when I was two.

My brother, Rick,
was kind of, like,

the one who was
raising me, if you will.

He was like my hero.

He got drafted to Vietnam.

The first line in 18 and Life,

"Ricky was a young boy,
he had a heart of stone,"

was written about him.

Around the age of

12 years old,

I was molested by some
boys in my neighborhood.

People I trusted, who
were a little older than me.

My body

and brain

shut down

to make this as
unreal as possible.

I viewed it from a
third-person standpoint.

So, I saw it happen.

But it didn't happen to me.

The person that was
on stage, and is on stage,

is mostly a character
that was developed

as a defense
mechanism for fear of

what other people are
going to think of me.

I ended up in a hospital because

I had had enough.

I still didn't have
the one key thing,

was how do you fight it?

I went to see this doctor,

and he was the
first psychiatrist

that sat down and had
a conversation with me.

So, I started treatment, and

I started, I was dedicated
with my medicine.

I was dedicated with therapy.

And, sure enough,
man, slowly, but surely.

And the more it helped,
the more I went to therapy,

I started coming back.

I am completely
aware, acutely aware,

of how lucky and blessed I am

for all that I've been given.

I got nowhere to go ♪

You know, you
gotta go out, and...

you've gotta perform,
and entertain people.

That's your job.

♪ A 13-year-old boy robs
a store so he can eat ♪

But that's the thing
that means the most.

That's why I'm here.

You know, that's
why we're all here.

We're not punching the
clock, that's one thing.

Like, we don't mail it in.

I get to go out and, you know,

with my brothers.

I was really upset
for a long time.

At some point, you realize you,

you're gonna run outta money.

I wanted a family, I
wanted to be a mom.

I wanted some other things.

I decided to go back to school.

I enjoyed using
that side of my brain.

You study, you do the
work, you take your A,

and you say, "Yeah!"

It's exactly what I
hoped it would be.

I go home, I do what I want,
spend time with my family.

In 2013,

I met Justin.

And just hit it off.

You know, sparks
flying, it was crazy.

We went to Vegas,

and we got married.

Everybody was like, "What?"

He's this amazing guitarist.

Great writer.

We've put out three albums.

♪ Don't waste your
time on their petty ways ♪

We're working on
album number four.

I can't even tell you

how good it feels

to have the person that
you love the most in the world

also be your absolute favorite
musical partner in the world.

This is...

the building I lived in
with Guns N' Roses,

when I managed them.

It's this one, it's at
the bottom, here.

- You wanna come in?

Yeah, let us in.

Looking back on
it, I didn't realize

how crazy it really was.

Now, it's, like,
I have a lawyer,

and she makes me wrap

everything really
tightly in paper.

You know what
your kryptonite is?

Your kryptonite is musicians.

You lived with the whole
band in this apartment?

- Yeah.
- It is very small.

Could you, sorry.

I've, like, put up with so
much bullshit in my life

that I'm not willing to
put up with it anymore.

Everybody hits a bottom to quit.

Getting sober

was the hardest thing
I've ever done in my life.

I cried every day
for, like, six months.

It was awful.

By the grace of God, I'm
sober and I'm still here.

A lot of my counterparts aren't.

This wall has, like, all
the bands' names on it.

That have been in The Rainbow.

In AA, they talk about
the reason at the core

of your being why you
are doing these things.

Which is horrifying, you know?

OK, why do these people
treat me like a doormat?

It's like, you know,

I had to really reinvent myself

and find my own
self-esteem to like

move forward in this game.

I wanna mention a couple people

who were really responsible
for taking this derelict,

fucked up, dysfunctional band,

and seeing
something in it early on.

It was Vicky Hamilton,
who tried to manage us

with all her heart.

Slash and Steven thanked me

at the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame.

I wanna thank Vicky Hamilton.

That was the first time
there had been any kind of

acknowledgement
that I had helped them.

I do know what I did.

And, to me, it doesn't matter
what other people believe,

or say, or anything like that.

I know what I did.

Slash knows what I did,

because he was there
doing it with me, you know?

I guess I was around 50.

And I was having
like this midlife crisis.

My dad called me.

And I was kind of
taking stock in my life.

I was sitting there
talking to him,

and I was saying
things like, you know,

all the shit that I've
done, you know,

the Scream, and Motley, and

Ratt, and Union,

and I'm 50 years old now.

Nd I met this girl, but
I'm living in her house.

I don't own anything.

Like, I have nothing to show

for all of the work
that I've done

my whole life.

But, my dad

stopped me dead in my
tracks, and he goes, "Listen."

He said, "When I was a
kid, I wanted to be an artist."

And he goes, "I fell in
love with your mother."

"We got married and you
came along shortly afterwards."

"My dream of being
an artist, I put it aside."

"I put on a suit and tie,

and I went to work."

He said, "You,
on the other hand,

you did everything you
said you were gonna do."

"You made a lot of money."

"You took care of your son."

"You took care of your mother."

"You did it all

playing your guitar
exactly as you wanted."

"You're a bigger
man than I'll ever be."

He put everything
into perspective for me.

But, I think that
was the point where

I finally got

the seal of approval.

When he did pass away,

I found his old foot
locker from the Army.

And there was my
dad's medals on one side,

and the whole rest of
the footlocker was like,

there was every fucking
magazine that I had ever been in.

Like, pictures circled, cut out.

And it was like, you know what?

I did OK.

Life is good.

The universe dealt
me a hell of a blow

to put me in the place
that I needed to be to

achieve,

artistically, what
I was capable of.

I never thought it
was in my reach to

have an orchestra play my music.

I just wanted to do it, because,

you know, I wanted
to know the language.

Studied for a long,
long time, man,

before I wrote anything good.

Finally, I wrote this
ballet called Ghosts,

and I sent it to Chris Wheeldon,
a world-renowned choreographer.

And Chris called
me back and said,

"I want to use it for
San Francisco Ballet."

Conversations with Nijinsky

ended up getting
nominated for a Grammy in

contemporary
classical composition.

I've just done it for
the love of it, man.

There's very few classical
composers you'll hear

that can really make
the orchestra rock

like a rock band.

It's all been very surreal.

To go into the ranks
of a whole other genre

and to really be embraced.

The '80s metal genre

was so much about
having a good time.

It was about getting laid,

and getting loud, and drunk,

and not worrying about the
pressures of society so much.

Just, kind of letting it go.

Having an escape.

In the last like 10 years,
the country music scene

has adopted that
whole zeitgeist.

Have you people been
to a country concert lately?

Country is now the
'80s, '90s rock and roll.

♪ Baby you're a song ♪

♪ You make me wanna
roll my windows down ♪

♪ And cruise ♪

♪ When this country cutie
with a rock and roll booty ♪

♪ Came struttin' in
through the door ♪

Now they're singing
about meeting the girls,

and partying with your friends.

back of a jacked-up tailgate ♪

You know, "We're
gonna pull in the river

and drink on my,
drink in my truck."

♪ And I'll find peace ♪

♪ At the bottom of a
real tall cold drink ♪

"With a drink in my hand,
and she was so fine."

The songs that will
live on from the '80s,

in the same way
that The Beatles,

and The Stones, and
the Zeppelin songs live on.

But the ones that we remember,

they define the groups
that define the era.

♪ Yeah, love is all around you ♪

And you know
what? It's not dead.

Because anytime
I put on any record

from that music
that I wanna listen to,

it still sounds fucking good.

Heavy metal music
and hard rock music

never, ever died.

From the early
Deep Purple records

and Black Sabbath records,

all the way through to today.

Skid Row is still out
playing to great audiences.

To this day, we still
get people talking about

what that record meant to them.

I'm so filled with gratitude

to be a part of something
that affected people

on such a deep level.

It's a pretty special thing.

Metal never dies,
it's like a virus.

Metal just comes back
as a different variant.

The real metal fans,
they're still around.

Metal.

You know, this is back
when men were real men,

afraid to be women.

So, definitely, in
the last five years,

I have noticed the resurgence.

Motley Crue has un-retired
and is back on the road.

Cut to today, the teachers
unions are singing...

"No, we ain't gonna take
it." And, it's just amazing.

I'm always gonna be that
guy from Headbanger's Ball.

This show is much more
important than I even realized.

I'm so proud and blessed
to have been part of that.

I wasn't raised
in an environment

or with the ethos that

it was a birthright
to be successful.

It's a gift.

It's an absolute gift, and
you need to treat it as such.

Whatever good comes your way,

take it as such.

There's gonna be bad times.

You just gotta get through 'em.

Music changes people's lives.

Make the world
better through music,

that's kind of my philosophy.

Figure out something to say
that's going to save the world.

You know?

Because we need it.

Life is as it should be.
