that the Spanish were here.

A little tricky to get
this thing up in this pit.

Today we're bringing
in a geophysicist.

So what we found is an area that
could potentially be a chamber.

500 years ago,
the Aztecs possessed

one of the greatest treasures
the world has ever seen.

Word of this treasure attracted
the attention

of the Spanish conquistadors,

but when they came for the gold,

it was already gone,

hidden by Emperor Montezuma

in locations throughout what is
now the American Southwest.

Now,
three treasure hunting teams,

all with different approaches,

are closing in
on what they believe

is the location
of the lost Aztec gold.

This right here, this is
definitely manmade activity.

The Dillmans are following
a trail

blazed by the research
of their grandfather.

I believe it's my destiny
to find it for the family.

The Villescas
are treasure seekers

descended from
Spanish conquistadors.

They believe the Spanish found
the gold...

A discovery made at this site

suggests the Spanish could have
melted gold here.

a really big day for us.

You know, finding that crucible
here on this spot

gave me the confidence
to pull the trigger

and bring in all this equipment.

This is a long time
in the making.

We've spent years searching
for this place.

You know, we have a lot
of money invested in this.

We're all in. We're just gonna
go on ahead and keep on digging

till the last drop of diesel
is burnt.

I'd like to thank all you guys

As you guys know, me and my dad
have been searching

for Spanish treasure
for quite some time,

and all the clues
have lead us right here.

We found evidence
of Spanish occupation here,

and we think somebody found
a bar of gold here a while back.

The Spanish wouldn't have went
through all this trouble

just to bury one bar.

So all we have to do
is dig and search for it,

and that's why you guys
are here.

You three gentlemen
will go with Jerome

to Fire Pit number one,
which is directly behind us.

Robert, you will go
to Fire Pit number two,

which is gonna be on
the south side.

And you two gentlemen will be
going to Fire Pit number three,

which is on the north side.

to maximize his chances
of finding gold.

Jerome will use the excavator

of gold buried somewhere

are headed back
to an ancient mine

along an Aztec trading route.

Recently, they discovered
what may be a gravesite

- near the mine.
- Oh.

I mean, it's the most
disrespectful way

you could do this.

Their search for the treasure
is temporarily on hold

pending an investigation

by the Mineral County
sheriff's department.

We're on Rattle Snake Mountain

just above the gravesite,

waiting on the sheriff's
department to get here.

When they show up,
they're going to treat it

as a crime scene no matter what

until they can prove it
otherwise.

So that puts us in a spot
of absolute limbo.

We don't know
what's in that gravesite.

It's going to be up to them

on whether we go back to work
immediately or not.

is where we think
there's a grave.

What's your standard
procedure for this?

We're gonna first figure out
if it is a crime scene.

Obviously, if it is, the whole
world is going to change.

We're gonna have to contact

Nevada Division
of Investigations.

They'll exhume the body
and any evidence around.

We have a lot
of Native American burials

and different things found
in this area.

So once we send it off
to a lab to be tested,

if it comes back
that it's Native American,

then we need to exhume
the rest of the bones up,

and then send them over
to the tribe,

and then they'll do
a burial of it.

Normally when we find old bones,
they carbon-date them.

The last ones we found
dated back to 1710,

plus or minus 20 years.

What we're interested
in finding right now

is just the skull
and probably the lower jaw.

That way they can do
the testing on the teeth,

- the dentures.

The general rule when you think
you've encountered a grave...

Just treat it like
it's the worst case scenario,

like this could be maybe
a murder scene or something

that's been recent.

of the north side of the canyon,

looking for a tunnel system.

After discovering

Similar to the one
his grandfather found in 1982,

Dan sent a rock climber
down to investigate.

But the footage didn't reveal
any hard evidence

of a tunnel or chamber entrance.

So the Dillmans have hired
geophysicist Ryan North

to take their search deeper.

Let's go check it out.

Using the ERT technology

enables us
to really cover more ground.

All right,
just right over here, guys.

Excellent.

It allows us to scan the canyon

looking for tunnel systems,
caverns, cavities,

things that you can't just
normally do

by walking around looking.

All right, so this is the north
end of Cave Lakes Canyon.

What I'm hoping for us to try
to prove today, that in fact

there are possibly
tunnel systems, caverns,

something that ties the south
side to the north side.

We're gonna be using electrical
resistivity tomography.

So essentially, we lay out
a long line of metal stakes

that are put into the ground
at an even spacing.

We'll put a current
into the ground.

And we're looking for areas

that are very resistive,
which are voids,

tunnels, caverns,
anything like that.

Electrical
resistivity tomography, or ERT,

is the process of directing
an electrical current

into the ground.

The electricity can only travel
through solid objects,

so any open spaces will show up
on the scans as voids.

Dan hopes that the chamber
and tunnels

mentioned in
his grandfather's tapes...

will show up on these ERT scans,

and perhaps even show the way
to get into them.

All right, guys.
I'm gonna set all the stuff out

that we're gonna need
to take down.

For me, I definitely feel

like I'm earning my place
on the team.

My dad gets the opportunity
to continue what he's doing,

which is out there researching,
which I don't mind.

Next step is we need to go

and put an electrode
every four meters,

connect all the electrodes
and the take-outs

to the one next to them.

all throughout this canyon

and driving stakes in the
ground, then I'm all for it.

the contact resistance tests.

So we need to see if we can get
some data collected.

If there's any kind of tunnel
or a chamber under here,

the resistivity tomography
survey can find it.

As the Dillman team
waits for their ERT results,

the Villescas team continues
their work at the Fire Pits.

This large piece of wrought-iron
that we just found,

to me it looks
like it's hand-forged,

because it's got a crack
and it's starting

to split open on the side.

- It's got some kind of...
- Design, huh?

A fancy little design.
Look at that.

The metal's, like,
shaped square.

What about the back of it?

I mean, it's some type of a,

- like...
- Like a spear?

- Yeah, like a spear, exactly.
- Huh.

It would've had
a long pole, huh?

Yeah, you know
what this looks like?

- Kind of looks like a pike.
- Huh.

If I didn't know any better,

I would say that's exactly
what that is.

Spanish conquistadors
attached pikes at the end

of long wooden shafts
for use in battle.

They were sometimes used
to hold off attackers

while shooters prepared
their weapons.

This technique made the pike
a devastating weapon

in the conquest of the Aztec.

- It was made to kill.
- Oh, that's a weapon for sure.

I mean, it's not super sharp,

but, I mean, it could've been
damaged, you know?

It's been buried for many moons.

We're gonna continue
looking in this area.

You know, we might find
something else.

- So I got the GPR.
- Yup.

You'll radar the tunnel?

With the sheriff's
department clearing the way

for work to continue
on the mine,

Kevin and Chris are preparing
to explore the pit

that may have been created

by local treasure hunter
Roy Ladd.

I'll grab the radar.

They're bringing in
ground-penetrating radar

to try to find out what
Roy may have been looking for.

If Roy was up here,
we'd both agree,

that pit is the key.
He was there for a reason.

- Come on, baby.

He was onto something, and I
think he was really close to it.

That's a little slippery.

Well, we're gonna use what Roy
couldn't use back in the day,

ground-penetrating radar.

So we can actually push
a signal into the ground,

and if there's anything
in there,

we're gonna be able to see it,
like Superman vision.

We're gonna actually look
into the rock.

Got it.

We might actually find
something down there.

With all of the headframe
and all of the wood going down,

I really believe that there's
a lot more information there

than what we've even seen.

But it could be nothing more
than just a pit.

and running the GPR,

it's just another thing
that you check off,

because if we walked away
from it right now

neither one of us would feel
good about it.

a cavity or something,

it's going to reflect that
back to the machine,

and we think there's more
to this story.

So we went out and surveyed

several approximately
300-meter long sections

of the north side of the canyon.

In one of them, I think
we saw something interesting.

So let me pull that up.

The Dillmans
are getting the results

of the ERT scan from around
the area of the water glyph.

So what we have here
in this one section,

this is the distance
along the line.

This is our depth.
Down here is our resistivity.

What we see is it's really high
across the whole site.

But right here is an area
of interest.

Fairy large target
in the center here,

and a few smaller ones
off to the east there.

It's fairly interesting
based on what you've told me

you're looking for
in the area we're looking.

Are you able to see how big
it is from here roughly?

We can make approximates.

It looks like it's somewhere
around 30 meters,

about 100 feet deep.

And it could be somewhere
on the order

of 30 to 40 feet in diameter.

- That's amazing.
- I mean,

just looking at that...
That just...

It screams to me
cavern or chamber.

That may be the chamber
that we're looking for,

and these other anomalies may be
the tunneling to get there.

And we just won't know until
we're boots on the ground

and we start putting some
shovels in the earth.

Hearing Ryan say that
we've got a massive chamber,

to me is ground-breaking
in our research.

Because my grandfather told us
to specifically

find this chamber.

And now we believe we got it.

So if this is the chamber,

what could these two voids be?

I mean, yeah, 'cause to me
looking at this,

they're lined up.

It looks like it's almost
in a straight line

leading straight to the cavern,

so that could potentially
be a tunnel system.

- It could be the entrance.
- Yeah.

So how far from the top
do you think it would be

if we were to try to drill down?

It's gonna be at least
somewhere around 30 meters,

around 100 feet,
and it's almost inaccessible

for drilling in that area.

But I think we're fairly close
to the cliff face,

so it might be a shorter path
to go in from the vertical wall.

The next step is getting
into this chamber.

We've got to move
a lot of earth and rock,

but we've got to get in there.

This right here,
this may be everything

that we've been looking for
at this location.

So what I'm doing is

about six to eight inches deep.

That way we can run
the metal detectors

and make sure we don't miss
a single thing.

I'm looking for those nice
solid, solid tones.

It's, uh...

Well, I don't know what it is.

I don't know, but it's got
a nice... a nice rounded edge.

Copper or bronze.

I mean, look at
the patina on it. It's...

I don't want to destroy it.

I think you might be right.

It might be a pin of some sort.

Maybe like a pin, like it goes,

like, right in there
kind of thing?

I don't know if it's Spanish.

I have no idea,
but definitely not gold.

You know, this
is a really interesting find.

You know, I don't know exactly
what it is.

It's definitely a piece
of something larger.

It's probably brass or copper
because it's tarnished green,

and that's indicative
of that type of material

as it gets old and aged.

But it's fascinating
and it's a great find.

Same area, but we missed this
in the table.

I think we should double check
this again.

I mean, if we missed this,

of the section of the mine
known as the Pit.

I think I've seen something.

They're hoping

on what local
treasure hunter Roy Ladd

might've been looking for
so deep into the mountain.

There's the face
we were against.

- Holy...

Remember, we're looking from
this side from the top down.

So we're looking into
the cavity on the bottom.

We're looking two feet in.
There's a cavity in there.

I don't know
if it's natural or manmade,

but it's big enough.

I think we can get in there.

There's a cavity back there.
Two feet.

Roy was two feet from it.

That's spooky.

Either Roy knew it was there
or he had no idea.

If it's a no, then he may be
just be lucking into it.

You know what?
I think Roy had a hunch

and he worked on that pit
till the day he died.

I think he just ran out of time.

We got to go through that wall.

That can sit there for
the rest of our lives

if it means bringing
that roof down.

That's not gonna happen.

Finding it is one thing.

Getting to it is gonna be
a whole other challenge.

And this is a shaky area.

We're gonna have to sit down
and really give a lot of thought

on how we're going
to get from here

through that two feet of wall.

We've got to figure out
a way to do it safely,

to where neither one of us
end up dead.

I don't want to collapse it
down on top of us.

We've got to really think
this one through.

This is going to be
the biggest challenge

that we've had to date.

'Cause now we got to bring down

an underground wall
in a bad spot.

The Dillman team
is headed to an area

where their ERT scan
indicated the location

of a possible chamber.

With the chamber being at least
95 feet below the ridgeline,

Dan is trying to see
if there is an entrance

through the canyon wall.

Derrick, you got that GPS?

Yup, I got it here.

What this is saying,
we probably got about,

say, 40 yards up ahead.

The discovery of this chamber
from this ERT data

has got my excited.

- Hold on, guys.
- Because my grandfather

constantly spoke about
a chamber that held treasure.

This looks so cool.

Could this be the chamber

that he was speaking about?

All right, guys,
so based on this GPS here,

we're standing right in front
of where this cavern is

based on the ERT readings.

Right,
that's what Ryan was saying

when he was showing us the data.

- Yeah.
- That we've got to get back

about 10 to 12 feet.

You got Shadow Cave right there
in that direction.

You got Weeping Cave.

And then the marsh
is right there

smack in the middle,
so this is really centralized

amongst everything
we've already uncovered so far.

- Right.
- And this is the one

- that's not a clear opening.
- It make sense.

They wouldn't leave
the true opening

just for anybody
to walk by and find.

Getting yourself
in the mindset of Aztecs,

if they have something to hide,

they're not gonna leave
a clear opening.

They're gonna cover it.

We need to get closer
to that and take a look at it.

We're not gonna be able
to do this by hand.

From what Ryan was
saying, 10 to 12 feet back,

you gotta to figure
it's all packed.

Hopefully we got enough light

and we got enough generator.

I think we got everything.

After their GPR scan revealed

that the Pit may lead
to a tunnel,

Kevin and Chris have returned
with a plan.

This thing down here

We're gonna go down.
I'm gonna drill four holes.

Load the holes. We're gonna
hook the charges up,

and hopefully blow down that
wall and see what's back there.

I'll be tethered up. Just
in case anything goes wrong,

I'm gonna pull as fast as I can,
get out of there.

It's kind of unnerving
to get down there

and drill this thing,

but we're just gonna take it
inch by inch

and get it done.

Well, here goes nothing.

Due to the fragile
nature of the mine,

Kevin and Chris settled on
a low impact explosive system

called SierraBlasters.

They will first drill the rock

and place blast rods
into the holes.

The small charges
are coordinated

to fracture the rock face,

causing less shock
to the surrounding tunnel

than a traditional explosive
would do.

to set a series of explosives

in order to gain access
to a possible tunnel.

I just got to watch
this drill on the way down.

of concerns about this.

One is he's using
a hammer drill,

which not only is it spinning,

it's also percussive
going into the rock.

So my biggest concern is that
he's gonna start

bringing material down
on top of him.

Chris and I are gonna be
in a constant communication.

He's gonna have to talk to me.
I'm not letting him off line.

The moment that drill starts,
everything is in my hands

to make sure that
he comes out of there.
