DANI: Xena.

Xena, I'm coming!

It sounds like she
found some water.

Is that a river?

Yes. Beautiful.

Ultimately, I'd
like to cross the river.

It's a little bit more open.

I just want to
keep my clothes dry.

Even though it's not too deep,

I've seen a lot of people
drown with their backpacks,

so I'm not going to clip this.

(dog barks).

It's extremely cold.

OK, pull! Ready, pull!

Oh, good girl!

OK, keep going. Come on

This is Xena.

She's a
eight-and-a-half-year-old

Greater Swiss Mountain dog.

Xena's strengths are
definitely her size,

her power, and Xena's
nose is much better than my

nose can ever come close to.

I was able to train her in
search and rescue and we have

travelled many
countries together.

I've had her since she
was eight weeks old.

Xena is my best friend.

Xena, look at this!

They're some kind of berry.

Looks almost like a cranberry.

Here's another.

That's what I found
in about five minutes.

(Xena barks).

What do you see, girl?

NARRATOR: As fall
gives way to winter,

resources are dwindling.

DANI: This is bear scat.

I can tell by all the
fur that it eats meat.

And it's pretty fresh.

There's a lot to
think about here.

I need you to stay
on guard, Xena.

NARRATOR: Along with
the two other teams,

Dani and Xena
will compete in the same
territory as black bears,

coyotes, lynx, and moose.

DANI: We're great adventure
buddies but I've never relied

on Xena for my survival.

My plan is to just make a
really quick on the go shelter.

This is the best
spot I've seen so far.

The only thing I don't
like is the bear scat,

but I have Xena
and I trust her.

NARRATOR: While
Xena's size, strength,

and scent skills
are invaluable assets,

three and a half miles
to the southeast...

RAY: Leroy!

(Leroy barks).

You ready to start working?

NARRATOR: A whiley
poodle pointer is already
pulling his own weight.

RAY: Come on
Good boy. Good boy.

Hup! Here. Here.

Good boy. Here. Whoa.

Who's a good boy?

Good boy.

This is going to help save
me some energy in the long run,

but we got more to do, bub.

This is my dog, Leroy.

He's a nine-year-old
poodle pointer.

He's good at scenting.

He's a water dog with webbed
feet and he always has had a

propensity to learn
extremely fast.

He's been with me since
he was eight weeks old.

He is a certified search and
rescue canine and we've had

some great success doing that.

I consider Leroy my partner.

It's an emotional bond
that is so ingrained in our

lives it's like breathing.

There's no species
boundary; he's my brother,

he's my friend.

Alright.

We're gonna start working on
our shelter to get us up off

the ground a little bit.

The wet ground, just,
literally is an energy leach.

It just sucks the
heat out of you.

This is the base.

It's pretty solid.

We'll use leaves for the
initial bedding and then we

will top it off
with some moss.

It'll help some of
our heat retention.

Here we go. Come on.

NARRATOR:
For the next 10 days,

the three teams will
attempt to earn up to a maximum

ten points
based on the success of
their survival skills.

RAY: Whoa. Good, boy.

NARRATOR:
Teamwork is critical.

Each pair must work
together to source food, water,

secure fire,

build sturdy shelter
and stay mentally tough,

earning a point
if they succeed and

2 points if they excel.

If a team taps out early,
they forfeit the competition.

After 10 days, the team
with the highest score

is declared the winner.

RAY: We've got plenty of room.
We're up off the ground.

There we go.

NARRATOR: Ray and Leroy's
above ground shelter earns

them an added advantage.

(thunder)

But the true test is how well
the shelter stands up against

the storm front
barreling towards

their respective camps.

ERIK: We should keep
moving, huh dog?

Let's head this way.

Oh, it's thick.

Whoa.

Because of the fog I don't
know which way is south.

I don't know which
way is north.

Having Sawyer lead the trail
is a huge advantage for me.

Good job. That a boy.

And this is my dog, Sawyer.

Sawyer is a Golden Lab mix.

He's intelligent.

He's a good companion.

He's been trained his whole
life as a pulling dog.

Oh, that's my good boy.

He was a six-week-old puppy
and a friend of mine gave

me this dog.

Sawyer is an independent dog,

but he's also bonded
with me really well.

Sawyer would
do anything for me.

He gives it
everything he's got.

Go ahead.

Good. Oh. Oh.

Whoa there's something.
Got some young cattails.

I like to boil them up
kind of like a potato.

They kind of give you
a full feeling when you get

enough of them.

This is just a little bit but
at least I have something.

Oh. Let's go this way.

That's what I was looking for.

A bigger water
body finally, so.

It's got high ground.

I can make camp
here initially.

Absolutely stunning.

We're soaked
through and through.

NARRATOR: As the rain crashes
down and temperatures plummet,

the three teams settle in for
their first night in the wild.

ERIK: I'm gonna enjoy dinner.

Cattail soup.

It's really spicy.
It's filling though.

I like that.

I'm looking forward
to a restful night and

a day of fishing tomorrow.

Yeah.

DANI: Xena and
I are pretty beat after a

long difficult trek.

I will definitely have a
fire going all night tonight.

We'll see what
tomorrow brings.

RAY: Woo.

It's been a day, but
we made the best of it.

You did good.

NARRATOR: All three
teams have secured fire and
water and a few calories,

but it's Ray and Leroy,
with their raised shelter,

who have a slight edge
going into day two.

RAY: It's pretty amazing
what you can get a dog to do.

We got this. We got this.

(vomiting and grunting).

ERIK: Oh.

I'm feeling
extremely nauseous.

(groans).

What did I do?

♪ ♪

ERIK: I had a rough
night, unfortunately.

Whatever it was that
I boiled made me sick.

I don't know, maybe I
could call it poisoning.

I was up with
diarrhea, nausea,

so I'm already low
energy and dehydrated.

I need to start climbing up.

I sure am glad I
have Sawyer with me.

It's the caring,
the compassion,

it's like he's taking care
of me and he knows it in

his own way.

Good dog, fella.

NARRATOR: Each team
aims to prove they can get

beyond surviving
and thrive in the wild.

Key to that is
sourcing food at least

2,000 calories a
day for ten days.

RAY: Right now, food
is what's on my mind.

I am definitely hungry.

I'd really like to
find some protein.

DANI: It's day two.

We're going to
have some breakfast.

This is what we have
left from yesterday.

It's a cranberry.

Oh, are you taking that one?

Yeah, and I'll have one.

When I was little,
my dad would take me up to

Maine every Summer
and we would hike.

I felt like he was always
looking out for me and then,

and then when my dad
was getting older,

he couldn't go
on hikes as much.

Now, I do a lot of backpacking
in the wilderness by myself

and there's always situations
where there's large predators

or even just strangers.

Xena is a superior protector
and I just feel super safe

anywhere I am, just
knowing that she's with me.

Come on, girl.

You ready? Yeah.

The most important thing is
going to be maintaining the

fire and staying warm.

I am making some
cordage from this tarp.

These logs are pretty heavy,

so I'm going to
see if Xena can help

me drag them back to our camp.

If I had to carry
this by myself...

Good girl!

That would mean
multiple trips,

expending a lot of energy.

Good girl!

And my ancestors aren't known
for hauling and pulling,

whereas Xena's are.

NARRATOR: Xena's strength
is a huge asset for the team.

Now, Dani is looking
for Xena's scent skills

to help find food.

DANI: Alright, Xen.

Find some blueberries.

Being a vegetarian in
a wilderness situation

has its advantages.

My food is not
that hard to hunt,

it doesn't run away from me,

but it's highly dependent
on your location.

Here in Maine, it's going to
be a challenge for me because

this is the time of the
year where the berries

aren't as ripe.

Anything that was
growing has stunted.

NARRATOR: Cranberries are
high in vitamin A and iron.

Dani will need to gather over
nine pounds of cranberries to

maintain about
2,000 calories a day.

DANI: I don't see any.

I see one.

This might be the last
berry of the season.

I don't think this is
enough to sustain me.

It's been raining non-stop.

Xena's snoring away.

I'm very happy
to have her here.

It would be much harder
if I was totally alone.

DANI: Thank you for being
my best friend, Xena.

NARRATOR: After a day
of hard work, Xena rests up.

ERIK: Oh.

NARRATOR: And Sawyer is
encouraging Erik to push on.

ERIK: Oh, what's next?

NARRATOR: After two
days of sickness,

Erik needs to replace vital
calories he's lost since

eating suspect cattails.

ERIK: Come here, bud.

Good job.

ERIK: I wanna get some hair.

ERIK: That's my boy.

ERIK: I got sick yesterday
and my energy is real low.

I hurt all over, so I'm
doing the best I can.

I sure could use a
fish today though.

Here I've got the spruce
root and there I have my tie

on the tiny hook and
then I've got a little
bit of Sawyer's fur in

there and then a black wasp
I just found on the beach.

I hope that will
attract the fish.

Let's give it a go.

Let's hope there's brookies
in here that like what I

have to offer here.

Spruce root is a
pretty thin root,

but so this fishing
line, this is tough.

This is why the
Native people used it.

My wife is Native American.

I've learned quite
a bit from my wife and
her elders and tribe,

balancing it with
my own family and

my Finnish heritage.

I highly value
Indigenous knowledge.

So, no action here.

It's getting late and I'm
going to head back to camp.

You're a good dog, Sawyer.

I didn't get any
fish so I'm hungry.

I'm dehydrated and low energy
and really need to eat.

NARRATOR: Erik's lack of
success with fishing is

costing him greatly.

With seven days still
to go, he needs a win.

ERIK: If I don't
catch any fish I don't like

where that's headed.

♪ ♪

RAY: I still
didn't eat anything.

Come on, this way.

Man, it would be nice if
I actually caught a fish.

So, now I'm
collecting branches.

The straighter the better.

I'm going to weave them into
a cone and we're going to put

that inside of this bag.

I'm not going to go
all the way up on it,

I just got to get to a point
where it's strong enough to

maintain its form so that we
can try to keep the mouth open

as a fish trap.

Maybe this will
kinda camouflage it.

Alright, good enough
to give it a shot.

You're going to have
to be the pull man.

Oh! Look what we got!

That's not a huge meal
but it is something.

Alright, well I've had these
on a nice rolling boil for a

couple of minutes now.

Fruit of a hard day's work.

Mmm.
It's better than nothing.

Mmm. Tastes good.

After spending some
time up in the wilderness
a couple of years back,

I realized I really didn't
want to be in Portland anymore

and so, me and my wife,

we started a homestead with
the hope that we don't have to

work nine to fives
for other people.

But I'm the only outdoorsy
guy in my family.

Luckily, Leroy is basically
the canine version of me,

so I get to share my
passion and enthusiasm for the

outdoors with this
wonderful Muppet of a dog.

Good job, Leroy.

You yanked that thing out
and pulled in some fish.

NARRATOR: While Ray
and Leroy have had some
success catching minnows,

Erik's failure to get
food is hurting him mentally

and physically.

ERIK: I haven't
eaten in five days.

It's really when I exert
myself that I'm feeling weak,

just from no food.

But there's just no fish.

This lake is so shallow, that
means it probably freezes out

at night, which kills any
fish that might be in it.

I know how to fish;

I just need bigger
water with fish in it.

I really didn't want
to have to move,

well what's my choice?

NARRATOR: Erik will have to
use precious energy he doesn't

have to move camp,
construct a new shelter,

and hopefully find food.

ERIK: I've trapped and hunted
and fished my whole life.

Now I'm 55,

my body's been breaking
down and I'm so low on energy,

I gotta figure
out how to have Sawyer
do most of the pulling.

I need to tap
his strength now.

Come on buddy, I got us
some saplings here to build

the toboggan with.

I put my pack on the saplings
and then tie them together and

then just wrap it all
up and as he drags the

pack that should
protect it from ripping.

I think it will work.

Ready dog?

has paid off so far.

He's achieved the
first part of his goal

with Sawyer's help.

ERIK: Good dog, fella.

Tomorrow's a brand-new day.

NARRATOR:
While Erik hopes for greater
success in his new location,

Dani is suffering from a lack
of food and scarce resources.

DANI: Uh, today
was pretty tough.

We walked pretty far today
through a lot of thick woods

and we didn't
find any resources,

so that was a failure.

In the past couple of days,

I probably have only had
a couple of hundred calories.

If I want to make it ten days,

I need to find
something more substantial.

I think my plan for
tonight is to try to just

fall asleep as early as I can,

conserve my energy
and hopefully have an

earlier start tomorrow.

I just wish there
was more daylight.

(footsteps)

DANI: What is that?

DANI: What is it?

(growling and barking).

DANI: Xena!

DANI: There's

DANI: Xena!

DANI: I think Xena
scared it off.

NARRATOR: As they enter the
second half of the challenge,

Ray and Leroy are
leading the pack.

With Dani and Xena
trailing not far behind.

But all three teams are
struggling to find enough food,

With winter baring
her teeth and prospects
for food diminishing,

the difference between the
survivalists tapping out,

or pushing through to
the tenth day means digging

into their mental toughness.

ERIK: It is day six.

I'm inside my sleeping bag.

Been real cold out,
but it's a new day.

That's a good boy, huh?

You're such a trooper.

I want a better shelter...

ERIK: That would
help me conserve energy,

stay warmer.

Help me through for
the next couple of days.

ERIK: Help me survive.

Alright, hike.

Most people know about the
tepee in North America from

the Plains Indians.

Good boy.

Straight ahead.

But my Finnish ancestors use a
similar lodge called a kota...

Right there.

And that was basically the
same construction and in a

survival situation like this
it's still the best shelter

I can think of.

I'm using three hardwood
forked poles as a tripod and

then all the other poles
are just put in at random,

whatever fits best.

I'm mostly concerned just
about having the energy at

this point to- to
get it up by dark.

So here I'm hitching
onto a heavy pole.

See if Sawyer can help
me pull it up safely.

catch he increases his lead,

was extremely cold.

Our water is

feels the lowest
it has this whole time.

The last berries I
could find around here.

Being out in the wilderness
and being self-reliant,

it's the only thing that
really makes me feel alive,

but I've become very dependent
on Xena for assistance with

her strength, but also
just her companionship.

Sometimes when
you're feeling down,

your dog is the one that
pulls you out of the mood.

The trees are changing colors.

It's colder.

We're going to explore an
area that we've never been to.

In this area, the
resources are totally depleted.

dog and she can definitely

identify different
types of berries.

I've been fishing non-stop
every single day

since I've been here.

on Xena for emotional support.

Their teamwork proved
their greatest strength,

I'm used to doing everything
for myself and for her.

through challenges as a team.

ten days or so than our
whole lives and in the long run

not only survive but thrive

RAY: I'm so overwhelmed
with pride for what
we accomplished together.

It also reaffirmed to me
that our relationship is good

enough where we can pretty
much figure out how to do

anything together and
when you have an animal that

brings you unconditional love,

someone that understands
you at a level

that no other human is able to,

why would you ever
want to do it alone?
