One October morning before the first drops

of the long autumn rains which
which fall on parched soil,

which turn tracks into
bog, and cut the town off,

Futaki was woken by the sound of bells.

The solitary chapel eight kilometers away,

had no bell and its tower had
collapsed during the war.

The town was too far away, for
its sounds to carry here.

THE NEWS IS THEY ARE COMING
