"In every walk with nature,

one receives
far more than he seeks."

It's been amazing for
me. It's like, I'm literally

in the places
that Muir's writing about,

looking at these places,

and he's bringing
like a third dimension

to this wilderness experience.

"Thousands of tired and
nerve-shaken, over-civilized people,

are beginning to find out that going
to the mountains is going home.

That wilderness is a necessity,

and that mountain parks
and reservations are useful

not only as fountains of
timber and irrigating rivers,

but as fountains of life.

Awakening from the stupefying
effects of the vice of over-industry

and a deadly apathy of luxury,

they are trying as best they can

to mix and enrich
their own little ongoings

with those of nature,

and to get rid of rust
and disease."

I first came across John Muir

with this simple quote of,
"Mountains are calling and I must go."

And I just started reading
more and more

about the early days of,
you know,

protecting the environment,

and it really all led to Muir.

You know, he was the first
guy that celebrated wilderness

and said we need to protect
it for future generations.

And I went to Glacier Point

20 years ago and I saw
the Muir-Roosevelt photo

and I looked out, and it
largely looked the same.

And I had the realization
that these people stood there

and said, "Let's think more
than next year and in five years.

Let's start thinking like, what does
America look like in a hundred years."

And I feel like that
perspective has been lost.

And I find myself
looking back to Muir

for that wisdom and inspiration.

"I am losing precious days.

I am degenerating into a
machine for making money.

I am learning nothing
in this trivial world of men.

I must breakaway

and get into the mountains
to learn the news."

I don't really know.

It'll be okay.

I have never been
winter camping.

Sounds like
a good idea in theory,

but, yeah, I'm psyched.

No better person to be out in
the mountains with than Jeremy,

I don't think, so, we'll see.

"What am I doing out here
with this guy?"

- No.
- What is the plan we're doing?

I think I'll be good.

We're just heading into
the John Muir Wilderness.

Life's about to get lot simpler.

Food, shelter,

water,

snow.

See what the mountains
are giving us.

I've been snowboarding in the
High Sierras for over 15 years now,

and I've struggled to get
into the heart of the range.

So, this trip,
loading up a bunch of gear

with the goal
to go east to west,

and hopefully
have an opportunity

to ride
some obscure peaks out there.

When it comes to snowboarding
in these mountains,

these are big, serious
mountains, we're in a remote area,

and it's really like
a conversation

with the mountains.

So, the conversation
has started.

I am excited.

Little nervous,
but very excited.

We are off the trailhead

and officially
on to the adventure.

"Everybody needs beauty
as well as bread,

places to play in and pray in,

where nature may heal and cheer,

and give strength
to body and soul alike."

I'm struggling

a little bit with the puzzle.

Not working as well
as I wanted it to.

Get physical with it.
I mean, you wanna like...

Borderline break fingers
packing your pack.

Okay.

You know, the idea when I
was thinking about the trip, like,

who is the right crew, and
I knew right away, Schnidy.

He literally is, like the
current day John Muir

who spends more time in
that range than anyone I know.

We call him the Sierra
Phantom, like you'll rarely see him.

He's out there every day
and you'll see his tracks.

And then, we wanted to
have someone

from a different side
of the sport.

And I talked to Elena,
she was just like,

"I'm in, let's go, I got this."

And I'm like, "How much have you
splitboarded?" "Oh, don't worry about that."

"How much
have you winter camped?"

"Never. But I got this."

And I'm like, "Well,
she sure is confident."

You can't say "no"

when someone like Jeremy asks
you to come out on a trip like this.

I remember watching his
snowboarding in his movies,

and just being like, "I just don't
even understand how he got there,

or the hell he is doing.

It's just
incomprehensible to me."

My snowboarding has been so
focused on training and the Olympics

that I feel like I've lost
my love for it a little bit,

or it's at least gotten mixed up

with a lot of other emotions,

and been very result-based.

I'm really excited to be doing
something totally out of my comfort zone,

learn as much as I can,

and get back
to the roots of snowboarding.

Ready for...

Lug number 2

with the massive pack.

We're up.

We're up.

"How glorious a greeting
the sun gives the mountains.

Every hidden cell is
throbbing with music and life.

Every fiber thrilling
like hot springs."

I'm nervous.

My skiing skills are sub-par.

You know that pain you
start to feel it in your teeth,

long day with the heavy pack,

but it's a beautiful time
of the day to be out.

So, all good.

We are at camp one.

Waiting to do this all day.

Yeah, team.

That felt so good.

"Walk away quietly
in any direction

and taste the freedom
of the mountaineer.

Camp out among the grasses
and gentians of glacial meadows

in craggy garden nooks
full of nature's darlings.

Climb the mountains
and get their good tidings.

Nature's peace will flow into
you as sunshine flows into trees.

The winds will blow
their own freshness into you,

and the storms their energy,

while cares will drop off
like autumn leaves."

Best thing in the morning.

Coffee is what got me
out of my sleeping bag.

This is the good stuff now.
Waking up, blank canvas,

beautiful mountains,
no one around,

and, uh, yeah, gonna go play
in some tall mountains today.

Price of admission...

Lots of calories.

Church is looking good today.

Finding happiness,
for me, is so easy to achieve,

and it doesn't cost
a lot of money.

How lucky I am for that.

Yeah.

Yeah, Schneider.

Good morning.

Look at it.

First star just came out.

The tents are probably
2,000 feet down.

Do a little headlamp-ride
down to that.

Remember this...

Forever.

You...

There's a point
where you're gonna sleep good

- no matter how cold you are.
- No matter what.

- Keep having days like that.
- Yeah.

What a day.

If it's not too steep,
then we can, you know...

Right.
Right along that side.

More north-facing too, so there
would have probably better snow than,

- like over here.
- Right.

There's a really nice, like,
line in here

- that we were super-excited about.
- Mm-hmm.

Big, big mountains.

Basically, we're in the known
right here,

and when we drop into that side,
we're in the unknown.

And I love the unknown.

I feel so lucky that

I've basically spent my life
in the Sierra

and I continue to see huge
chunks of terrain for the first time.

We're heading
somewhere that way.

It's a little bit of a...

Follow your nose,
got some ideas,

feel the mountains, listen
to where they're saying,

kinda hone in on the aspects
and elevation that we're looking for.

West is calling.

"Few places in this world

are more dangerous than home.

Fear not, therefore,
to try the mountain-passes.

They will kill care,
save you from deadly apathy,

and call forth every faculty

into vigorous,
enthusiastic action."

Just giving a piggyback ride

across the Sierras here.

No big deal.

All right.

Try not to fall and die.

It's a trick
to poleboarding, one hand.

It's like that thing could be,
like a 6-45 7 deal.

I think we should at least go
to saddle and evaluate.

Yeah.

You only get one chance
to walk into new mountains.

We just crossed over
into the, into the unknown,

and the whole vibe
and mood and feel,

is different.

There could be
some skiing over here.

Oh, God.

See how he does.

It's looking good.
He's a good skier though.

That was the accomplishment
of the trip so far, guys.

It's fun, huh?

My whole focus has been
doing this for 15 years.

Elena comes out here, has like,
hardly been on a splitboard,

never winter camped,
and it's like,

"This stuff's fun."

It's driving me nuts.

It should be harder.

Ho-ho-ho.

Plans continue to evolve,
look at that thing.

There's no way
we're not going there tomorrow.

That's what I'm looking for,
right there.

Just spectacular.

Oh, this stuff makes me giddy.

That's awesome.

It's just, it's perfect.

It's right there, right?

More like right here,
so that's like, I mean...

We're close to 12,000.

Breathless, man. This
is... Yeah, straight up.

This is just unheard-of.

Pretty fortunate to be up here.

Super grateful.

is so perfect as beauty.

Whether as seen carving the
lines of the mountains with glaciers

or gathering matter into stars,

or planing the movements
of water.

Still, all is beauty."

The conventional thinking

back in the days
that the Sierra was created

- by earthquakes...
- Mm-hmm.

And Muir, he just felt
that the glaciers

carved these mountains,

and so he went out,
he took a piece of wood,

to a glacier, pounded it in,

measured it,

came back six months later
and the wood had moved

eight feet, proving that there
were glaciers in California.

Wow!

And they're responsible for

shaping these mountains.

That's pretty impressive.

So we're starting to hear more
and more about last descents.

There are some lines here.
I was talking to a buddy

who, um, down south is
the biggest part of our range,

and he did a remote peak
back there

that, for it to be ride-able,

it had a glacier that
needed to hold ice and snow

all summer long.

And he's been trying to
get back to it for ten years,

and he's like,
"It's just all rock now."

There's no permanent snow on it.

So he thinks he has
the last descent of that thing.

And now it plays out
all over the place.

Just feel the granite.

So grateful to be out here

and to be doing something

that I honestly
never imagined myself doing.

And the joy
that it's brought me,

just in the short amount of
days that I've been already is

beyond what I expected.

You know,
I could stay out here forever.

You don't need
a shower or anything?

I need a shower.

I think
I'm probably pretty smelly.

But I'm embracing it.

You gotta get in nature,

fall in love with nature, if
you want to protect nature.

I think that

there's more and more people
getting out, which is awesome.

I just don't think

our elected officials value it

as much as they used to.

Like, historically,
you look back,

it was kinda like a deal

to like, for businessmen
and politicians

to go and sit by the campfire
and see the stars and

I think that we got less
of that in there right now.

Maybe you could have,
like, take a politician

camping program...

We're trying, man.

It's kinda, the first question
I ask is like...

"Do you get out, you know
do you ever get outside?"

And it's usually like, "Ah, I
go for walks with my wife."

That's what we're
looking for, beautiful turns.

It is beautiful, though.

Got a little more purple
in the sky today.

Little different cloud vibe.

It's like,
it's definitely lighter.

I don't know how...

It's not like,
not any smaller, really.

Oh, shit.

I love the crampons.

Feel like a bear
with the crampons.

I like.

Pretty mean.

This is a hard start.

The crampons, heavy pack
right out of camp.

Kind of a shocker way
to start your day.

But it's gonna get us
up high really quick.

It's just gonna hurt a little.

It's steep.

Dare I say all downhill from
here with the heavy packs.

- Almost.
- Most of the way.

I think we leave our packs and
start moving towards that face.

Because of timing?

Just go get that thing
while the getting's good.

Yeah.

Feeling great.

The air is clean.

The sky is beautiful.

The mountains
are treating us well.

Can't complain.

That was great.

The snow looked good.

Oh, yeah.

It's nice to have
that snow settled out,

take kind of the guesswork
out of it.

You know, the older I get...

The older I like my snow.

Don't question
the Sierra Phantom.

Yeah, dude.

You going for water?

"The snow is melting into music.

Everything is flowing,
going somewhere,

animals and so-called
lifeless rocks as well as water.

Thus, the snow flows
fast or slow

in grand beauty making
glaciers and avalanches.

The air in majestic floods
carry minerals,

plant leaves, seeds, spores,

with streams
of music and fragrance."

Packed up camp this morning.

Climbed over this mountain,

traversed, climbed another deal,
left our heavy packs,

climbed up that,
snowboarded down,

out of water,
and so, just relaxing.

We're up around 11,000 feet,

which is top of the water
source, so this is our faucet.

But this water actually goes
into the lakes,

and then the rivers, and eventually
to the homes and farms in California.

When we get these huge rains,

it just blows out
all our water capturing system.

So rain does not work. Um,

snow is critical.

This little drip is going on
all over the mountains, and

just like the perfect,
steady stream of water.

Gotta go figure out
where our next home is.

Lot of options.

I can do the kitchen
over by those rocks, maybe.

Just says kitchen all over it.

Another night in the wilderness.

Getting into groove.

"Never while anything is left of
me shall this camp be forgotten.

It has fairly grown into me,

not merely as memory pictures,

but as part and parcel
of mind and body alike."

And I'd say, at the heart of it
is why it's like super-frustrating,

where India, like your
average citizen in India,

their carbon footprint is
about 95% less than American.

Man.

And so,
part of the Paris Agreement

is for these big,
heavy polluters,

like the US, to go

to places like India and go,

"Hey, skip coal,

we're just gonna
go straight to renewables."

And that's why

us pulling out of it
is a huge deal.

Especially right now.

Easter Sunday. You gotta kinda
get, you know, cleaned up for Easter.

Invigorating.

that I couldn't walk away from.

'Cause some lines stick out more than others,
and this one has been calling my name.

Goes down the mountain.

Well, we came into
this valley as strangers,

and now we got
a bunch of new friends.

This morning
we rode a peak over here.

Afternoon, we rode a peak
right there.

And then

we're on a pretty fun line
right now.

Memories are being made
in this wonderful valley

that, I don't even know the
name. Don't know if it has a name.

But it's a happy place.

Yeah!

- Wow!
- What an epic night!

Being that it is Sunday,

Easter, I felt like
we needed a Muir passage, so,

to celebrate what has been
a day to remember.

Yeah!

"Fresh beauty
opens one's eyes..."

"Wherever it is really seen.

It is a good thing,

therefore, to make
short excursions now and then

to the bottom of the sea,

or up among the clouds
on mountain-tops,

not only to learn something
of what is going on

in those out-of-the-way places,

but to see better
what the sun sees

on our return to common..."

"Everyday beauty."

I kinda feel like
we did that today.

I would agree.

- That's exactly what we did.
- Yeah.

Take the boots off
and maybe just, just, like,

just do this
and go for a little moon-hike.

I'm down.

Moon power.
- Little rest. We'll sleep when we're dead.

Just get the last drop
of life out of it today.

Sunset at 13,000 feet.

Far as you can see north
and south, the range stretches.

So it's just...

Makes you feel small,
which is a good thing.

'Cause we are small.

Oh, yeah!

Did that really just happen?

So fun.

Oh, that was
the run of the day right there.

Fond memories here.

Place's been good to us.

As much as I think
I may come back,

there's just so much to see
that I usually don't.

But I'll always remember it.

Adios, new friends.

Thousand-year-old bonsai tree...

Looking pretty good.

Got a friend here, friend there.
These are really old trees.

Elders.

"Few that fell trees plant them,

nor would planting avail much
towards getting back anything

like the noble primeval forests.

It took more than 3,000 years

to make some of the trees
in these western woods,

trees that are still standing in
perfect strength and beauty,

waving and singing in the
mighty forests of the Sierra."

It's not like
this particular land

is threatened by the
bulldozers, so to speak,

but it's definitely threatened
by climate change.

I mean, we were just camping
by these whitebark pines,

and they're basically going
extinct because it's too warm.

And every part of nature
feels those effects.

I think of trees a lot.

I think of the sunrises
and sunsets it has seen.

Ability to bend in the wind,

not be rigid.

Rigid doesn't really
work in nature.

And I don't think
it works in life either.

That's a nice tree right there.

Every time
we get our heavy packs on,

we, like, have this goal
to move 'em really far,

and we keep getting stopped
in our tracks.

I keep seeing stuff
and having to stop and going,

"How can we leave this?"

Nice to have
camped down in some trees.

Means we got to walk a little
further to our summits now.

Even these areas
that are protected are like,

everything's being affected
by climate.

It's unfortunate. When I
started Protect Our Winters,

I would have never thought that
the frontlines would be Capitol Hill.

- Yeah.
- But we need support

by the Federal Government.

Right now
they're dug in on the past,

and we need them
fired up for the future.

Exactly.

That's our frontlines right now.

- It's 2018 mid-term election.
- Yeah.

If we can move the needle
on a couple of congressmen

we can make a difference, 'cause
it's like because of like, three votes,

that we're drilling
in the arctic now,

and the pipelines
are back on the table,

and the offshore drilling
is on the table.

Yeah. I mean,
I think, for me,

realizing that

the choices
that are being made now

are choices that are gonna
affect me and my children,

not the people that are
making these choices.

- Totally.
- So,

for someone my age

to say "I'm not gonna vote

and help make the choices
that are gonna affect me

for the rest
of my life" seems...

Short-sighted.

Looks like about...

Celebrating in the John
Muir Wilderness today.

It's been so cool, like,

I mean, for me, not knowing
what I was getting into, basically.

- Yeah.
- Just,

doing all of it,
it's been so rad.

I'm excited about it, it's...

Totally. That's it.

Where else do you want to go?

I mean, I've got, like, a totally
different mindset right now.

Yeah.

Here. This is where
you want to go.

I'll continue to do
more and more of this.

Oh, what a place to wake up to.

Spent the night
by this beautiful river.

Nice to get out
of the elements up high,

able to sleep under the stars.

Just a long walk to get here.

Being out here,
surrounded by wilderness,

having that connection with

nature, definitely makes me
want to spend more time out here.

And this trip
really opened up my eyes

to this whole new way
of travel and excitement

for snowboarding and for nature,

and what I can do to help
protect it and keep it this way,

so that others can experience
the same feeling.

We gotta go
right now? Are you kidding me?

Looks like we're leaving,

but you're never really gonna
be like, you know, leaving.

Still like, be in our hearts,
that did it.

It's in these mountains,
you know.

It's kinda where I'm at.

Hard to leave though, for sure.

Always hard to leave.

"We are now in the mountains,

and they are in us,

kindling enthusiasm,

making every nerve quiver,

filling every pore
and cell of us.

Our flesh and bone tabernacle

seems transparent as glass
to the beauty about us,

as if truly
an inseparable part of it.

A part of all nature.

Neither old nor young,

sick nor well,

but immortal."

We are leaving the mountains.

We're not moving too fast.

With reluctance,
we head that way.

Just to have that,

and the perspectives gained

from being out there,

it's everything.

It's one of our
greatest resources.

And the reality is, if
nature fails, humanity fails.

"The battle we have fought,

and are still fighting for,

is a part of the eternal conflict
between right and wrong.

Every good thing,
great and small,

needs defense.

So we must count on
striving for these trees,

and should always be glad
to find anything so surely good

and noble to strive for."

You've been good to us.

Oh, I broke the sign.

I climbed a lot of mountains
in my life,

but nothing as challenging
as Capitol Hill.

All of this
with the global warming.

A lot of it is a hoax. I mean, it's a
money-making industry, okay? It's a hoax.

The fact that science
is under attack,

that's probably the
most scary thing of it all.

That's pretty crazy. It's
like the scientific process

is no longer accepted as truth.

- That's dangerous.
- Yeah.

When I started
Protect Our Winters,

the last thing
I really wanted to do

was become politically active.

But it...

No disrespect, um...

It became very clear
that, for us as a society,

to make real change,
it needs to happen here,

it needs to happen at the White
House, it needs to happen in Capitol Hill.

And really, our lever there
is jobs.

President Trump has pushed
to revive the coal industry,

but growth in solar power
beat all other energy sources

in 2016.

Like, ten years ago,
the projection was...

- Say solar panels cost
"x" amount. Mm-hmm.

And in reality,

they're 90% cheaper

than we thought they
would've been ten years ago.

Damn. That's crazy.

In 2016, almost 90% of new power

added to Europe's
electricity grids

came from renewable sources.

In fact, wind energy
has now overtaken coal

as the EU's second largest form
of power capacity, after gas.

Take Germany,
an industrial powerhouse,

one day last December,

got 81% of all of its energy
from renewable sources.

Lot of countries are getting more
than half on an average basis.

The Danes get almost
30% of their electricity

from the wind. And by 2050,

they promise to be
completely fossil-fuel-free.

We are getting passed-up
by these other countries

that have embraced
this challenge,

and we're missing this huge
opportunity that the issue presents.

We can be leaders on this
transition to renewables.

- That's the code.
- Yeah, totally.

That's the key to the portal.
