How've you been anyway?

Yeah, good. Yeah, I mean up until now,
amazing.

The season has been like amazing,
we’ve played brilliant football,

the crowds just, everyone believes
that this year...

And then this is just... I mean...

We’re in history at the minute, aren’t we?
In 50, 60, a hundred years’ time,

it’ll be, like, "In 2020,
look what happened for that generation."

We're on a roll,
we're going back to the promised land.

No one can touch us, we're unstoppable.

Then all of a sudden, bang,
we get hit by a global pandemic.

It's the most "Leeds" thing

that could possibly happen
to Leeds United.

Scary. I mean there’s not really much
what scares me but...

I said to my boss at work,
I’m a bit worried about this.

When they were showing
how many people were catching it,

how quickly people were dying,

that was worrying times, you know?
That was worrying times

because you start thinking
of family members.

Are they going to catch it?

I said listen, "If you go round to Dad's,
make sure you fucking wash your hands.

You make sure you...
If you've got a cough, you stay away."

We was on about it
like the Huddersfield match

because we saw a couple of people
walking around wearing masks.

So I was like to my Dad,
"Do you think it’s getting bad, Dad?"

And he was like, "Well, I don’t know."
We was, like, "Shit...

it really is going to affect football."

We played the last game
against Huddersfield

and the day before,
we were due to travel to Cardiff

we received the notice that we don't play.
We stop the league.

It's a difficult moment,

not for the players, for the football.

I think it's a difficult moment
for the society, no?

For the world.

Following Leeds’ victory
over Huddersfield Town on March 7th,

football fixtures across the world
are suspended

due to the rapid spread
of the Coronavirus disease.

It was on January 28th, was the first
message I sent, just saying,

"There's something happening here
that we’ve got to keep an eye on."

"What do we know?
What’s the latest news coming out of it?

Because this looks like
it’s going to be something

that's going to affect the whole world."

We didn’t realise at that stage
just how prolific

and how bad it was going to be.

Within the space of a week,

it went from suggesting
that a game might delayed

to all games might be played
behind closed doors,

to the season might be delayed
for three months,

to ultimately the season
might be declared null and void.

It was real worry
that they were just going to just cancel

and then just re-do the season,
start from scratch.

And the biggest worry with that was,
of course, it was really unfair

because we were so much better.

Yeah, I was just hoping.

There has been nothing, probably,
since the last world war,

which has been as far-reaching
in its implication.

The actual risk for the players
at that stage...

wasn’t high, and probably still isn’t now.

But I was worried about other people.
You know, my parents.

We’ve got Kalvin,
who's really close to his grandma.

What I didn’t want to happen was anyone

to pick up anything within the workplace

that they then transmitted
to anyone at home.

Immediately, we locked down
the training ground...

with social distancing.

Even the first team
shouldn’t be training together

so they’re training from home now.

They've all been given
personalised programs.

We wanted the players and stuff
to stay safe

and that's the main thing
isn’t it, really,

regardless of how gutted we are
that football has stopped.

Today actually is, you know, a sad day

because it's the day
we're going to shut down the office.

At the end of the day today,
Elland Road will be locked up

the management team
will be working at home

until it's safe for everyone
to come back in.

With the UK now on lockdown,
Leeds United's staff,

players and fans must all stay at home

as the UK government attempts to minimise
the impact of the virus

on the NHS.

As things stand, no-one knows how,

or if, the Championship season
will be completed.

We sort of knew
it was going to happen and...

Yeah, and then lockdown.
Here we are, six or seven weeks later.

Obviously, no further forward as in
what's going to happen, we don’t know

and I don't think anybody knows.

Yeah. It's a sad situation to be in
but, look, we're healthy at the minute.

Some people have, obviously,
gone through a tough time

and we've got to make sure that we do
our best to keep everybody safe.

I don't think you can prepare for it.

Obviously going in,
living your normal life,

and then through an interview
from the Prime Minister, and it's...

you're in lockdown and only allowed out
an hour of the day.

Yeah, it's difficult

and something that I never thought
would happen in my lifetime.

Yeah, it's important
that we stay together, stay in touch,

keep the team morale high
and keep encouraging each other as well,

you know, to do the sessions.

I accept that there will be days

that you maybe don't feel like going out
and doing a run

or going out and doing the bike.

You know, I get that. We're not robots,
we have our own feelings as well.

People think we're happy, upbeat people
and we are most of the time.

But, you know, you can have
your bad days as well,

so it's important we drag each other
through it.

Some days you wake up
and you just can't be bothered to do it,

but you know you’ve got to

because you know we could be back
at any stage

and the games could start at any stage,
so...

Most days are hard
but some are harder than others.

I started off, when we’d had the running,
running with the dog.

And it was fine for about a week
and then he kind of chucked the towel in

and decided he didn't want to run anymore.

Every time I took him,
he was, like, stopping

or he was going... Like,
I was having to drag him along.

So in the end, I had to sack that off
and just run on my own.

You know what, I always think
when we’re doing the running

if we don’t get that distance,
we don't get promoted.

That's just what I think in my head,

so I always make sure I try
and get to that point.

It’s the second of May,
supposed to be last game of the season

and, yeah,
I just talked to my girlfriend.

I said, "Listen, today I play
the last game and we go for holidays."

And, yeah, that was sad.

You know, you go through social media

and you see teams, you know,
on this day last year

and having promotion parties and stuff
and you’re thinking,

"Well that could have been us
this year."

Should be going round on somebody's
shoulders around Elland Road, enjoying it.

It’s tough for me.

That's been taken away from us,
that moment,

that buzz, the...
the aura around the occasion.

That's everything you want.

Yeah, it is sad, it’s really sad

that we're not going to be able to enjoy
that moment with the fans.

Our mindset the whole time is,

"Lads, we're gonna have
to play these nine games."

I don't know
whether it will be in a month's time,

two months’ time or whenever.

But our mindset,
until we get told otherwise,

is that we've got to play
these nine games.

The UK lockdown has now passed
from weeks into months.

During this period,

not only do the players have
to keep themselves

in the right place mentally,

Angus Kinnear and the board
of Leeds United

must attempt to manage the extreme
financial strain the club is now under.

The lion’s share of our revenue comes
from match income.

We’ve lost five home games,
they’re over £1 million each,

so we’re under acute financial pressure.

We have two hundred and fifty staff
and it goes up to 2,000 on a matchday.

All of those people rely on Leeds United.

I wake up with that pressure
and that responsibility.

Second to trying to get promoted,

I think a Zoom call
with the whole organisation

was probably the most challenging thing
we could attempt.

I was hoping that by seeing everybody,
I would find somebody else

who has cut their hair quite as badly
as I have

but I’m yet to see any competition
for that mantle.

Angus was a superhero.

Getting everybody looked after,
assuring people,

we set up Zoom calls
to speak to the staff

to make them feel a part of the journey,

but also re-assure them
about their careers.

It’s not easy being stuck at home,
it’s not easy being away from work.

We’re actually going to have to come out

and use our spirit, and our ingenuity,

and our commitment and collaboration

to plot a way through what's going to be
some challenging times.

In order to keep the business running,

and avoid having
to make non-playing staff redundant,

Angus and Victor must ask something
of the Leeds United players.

We just laid out what this meant
for the club, financially,

to have all the revenue streams
dry up overnight.

Really, the players' wages
are the only sensible cut.

What was really important to the players

and they reinforced this at the end

was they were only prepared
to accept the wage cut

if it meant the rest of the staff,

the 200 staff who don’t play football,

all were going to be paid normally
across the period.

So Liam put the messages out to the group.

Within 24 hours,
we had yeses from everybody.

The way that the players acted
in terms of... It wasn’t even a question.

To have given up their salaries
to save the staff here

just showed what the club’s about.

The fear then was:

can we get football back up and running
and finish the job that we’d started.

While the board of Leeds United
are trying to manage the club

through the global pandemic,

the devastating reality of COVID-19

strikes at the heart of the club
as a Leeds United legend

is suddenly taken by the deadly virus.

I just enjoyed being a footballer.

And then the minute they say,
"Norman Hunter," they say, "Leeds United."

Well I’m quite happy with that.

And Hunter coming up fast and driving.

Oh, and what a goal.

What a goal by Norman Hunter.

We've already seen some horrible things
here at Leeds United.

We saw the death of Norman Hunter

and I think that hit the fanbase
particularly hard.

And seeing somebody who you saw
at every game

and he was this larger-than-life character

and that hit the players, as well.

I wouldn’t swap my career for anybody.

What we’ve won,
the players I’ve played with, what a life.

What a great time we’ve had.

Absolutely brilliant.

Most important thing was
that I played football for Leeds United.

Your heart goes out to people
that have lost loved ones.

Obviously, we lost Norman to COVID.

Nobody felt the effects of it
more than Leeds United

but nobody acted more like a family

or nobody embodied that Revie team spirit
more than what Leeds United did.

Football for the nation
brings people together

and it gives them a purpose in life
and something to talk about

rather than just the virus.

Football, it’s about men kicking
a leather-covered bladder,

in the historical times, around a field.

But it enhances people's lives.

People need something to look forward to,

whether you're going through good times
or bad times.

It makes people feel better.
Without football, there’s a vacuum.

There is a missing part in all our lives.

Whether Leeds United get promoted,
whether we win every game,

actually the existence of Leeds United

and every other football club
is really important.

And I think what people are realizing
at the moment

is that those things we belong to,

when they’re taken away,
that sense of togetherness and unity

has gone with the things we love

and I think they’ll be even more important
when we get back to normal.

It is now three months since Leeds United
last played a game.

But following consultation
with the UK government,

the Football League
has taken its decision.

The current league season will resume.

Leeds United must play
their final 9 games

and attempt to win promotion on the pitch.

But they must do so without the support
of their passionate fans,

as all remaining fixtures will be played
behind closed doors.

Absolutely, totally gutted
that we won’t be there to watch it.

I think for Leeds fans,
if we get promoted,

we are missing out on being there.

We’re missing out on celebrating
with the players,

the players are missing out
on having us there celebrating with them.

That’s one of my biggest
upsetting moments, really,

because I have been planning on this
for that long.

You know, 15, 20 years

and I have been visioning it
as a nice massive romantic,

passion-filled, tear-filled,

running around Headrow
with the open top bus.

And, you know,
I had it planned to be there.

With the strictest stage
of the UK lockdown now over,

Leeds United players and staff
will be tested for COVID-19.

If the results are negative,
the players will head back to work

and back to the final 9 games
of the Championship season.

So we're doing swab testing twice a week
on all the players

and any staff that might be coming
into contact with players

or who might be attending games.

With all COVID tests passed,

the Leeds United squad return to training
at Elland Road.

This will be the first time
a ball has been kicked

in the iconic stadium in months.

Artificial crowd noise is being pumped
into the stadium

to simulate the atmosphere the players
will play in

when the season resumes.

As things stand,
Leeds are top of the Championship.

One point ahead of second-placed West Brom

and seven points clear
of third-placed Fulham.

Marcelo builds every week
around the sort of battle of wills

of who’s going to prevail
on a Saturday afternoon.

Not having that has been challenging
for him,

so I think he has struggled,
as we have all struggled,

to cope without having an enemy
to fixate on at the end of every week.

Think about all the stuff
Bielsa's been doing

whilst he's had all this free time.

He will have been watching
every single match since 1987.

He’s had this free time now to just do it.

It’s good to get back out on Elland Road.
Obviously we've missed it.

Yeah, I think the speakers are better.

I think you kind of get
a little bit of atmosphere.

I think it’s just to get familiar
with the surroundings.

Obviously none of us are have ever going
to have experienced this before,

and, hopefully, we don’t have
to experience it again.

But right now we’re living that
and that's the way it's got to be.

Obviously everybody wants to play
in a full stadium,

but I just love to play football
so I would play everywhere.

If we play... Have to play training ground,

I would play there so no problem for me.

I don’t know.
It’s weird the crowd noises and that.

I suppose with no away fans it saves you
from getting a bit of abuse doesn’t it,

from getting a few strong words fired
at you.

It’s in our hands.
We know what we’ve got to do

and we know how we need to perform
to get to where we want to be.

And that’s my message every day
to the lads.

In their final nine games,
Leeds’ mission remains the same:

finish in the top two
and guarantee automatic promotion.

If the team finish any lower,

they will again enter the dreaded
end-of-season play-offs.

Leeds will resume the Championship season

with an away game at Cardiff City.

Lockdown for me has been largely positive.

You start to appreciate things in life;
your family, being together.

And I travel around a lot normally
but it’s been great.

I’ve had a chance to really, kind of
reset my whole life

and it’s been, I have to say,
largely positive.

I’ve come out of it a better man.

But now it’s Leeds United.

Anxious, nervous...

Always apprehensive
before any Leeds match

but I think it’s just amplified more
for this today

just to see how we’re going to come out.

Can I higher that up a tiny bit.

It’s a special day.

We’ve been through a lot, all of us,
the last few months.

It’s so great to be back,
have some kind of spirit and sport

back in our lives.
It’s great to see again.

When the atmosphere’s good,

sometimes I think
some of the players struggle

so it’s like trying
to put a positive on it

that it’ll be even better for us.

all more grounded than last year.

I think we managed emotions differently,

and so we are just waiting and taking it

What sports can do is very unique.

It can bring back joy and emotion
and even simple hug

and celebrating in the stadium
is something that is priceless.

So, hopefully, we will be back soon
in the stadium with our fans.

Growing up as a kid,
it was never about the money.

It was never about becoming a footballer
to get all the money.

It was to play in the Premier League.

Everybody dreamed of that as a kid.

They don’t think of money at that age

that dream, is still there today.

I’ve worked hard to get there

and, hopefully, one day,
I will play in it.

That day feels closer,
hopefully it is closer.

who’ve travelled all across England from

Then like my missus, who's now...
I’ve been with her ten years,

we got together when I was at Yeovil.

She's followed me around
and she’s been so supportive,

so for all them to see me play
in the Premiership.

I’ve got two sisters.

You know my big sister,
who looked after my little sister

when my parents would take me to football
so she gave up a lot as a kid.

So it’s not just my dream,
it’s their dream, as well.

For me, it’s just about playing
in the Premiership.

I’ve always dreamed of that.

I don’t know how many games I’m going
to play in the Premiership,

I don’t know if I'm good enough,
I don’t know if I’m going to adapt to it.

I hope I do.

But these are all things
that I’m excited to see

and, hopefully, I get to show that.

They're on this rollercoaster with us
as well, aren't they.

They see everything.
They see the highs, the lows.

They see how it makes you feel.

My daughter, she was just like,
she knows what's at stake, like.

My boys are a bit young.

She's at the age where she knows
what we are about to achieve

or, hopefully, achieve anyway.

At Arsenal, I made a squad
for the Champions League

and I sat on the bench.

Then one day I got told
I wasn’t good enough for Arsenal.

I thought, alright, that’s fine.

The dream was always there
to play Premiership

but when I was at Yeovil...

did I really believe
that I was going to get back to it?

Probably not.
I probably thought I’d play Championship.

I always thought
I’d get to Championship level

and maybe not make the grade.

But I’ve carried on improving
and, hopefully, I’m almost there.

So, yeah, it’s been up and down
but it’s been worth it.

It’s been a good journey,
I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

There wouldn’t be a moment
I wouldn’t change now.

Following the death of Norman Hunter,

Leeds United lost another legendary figure
from the club’s history:

England international, Trevor Cherry.
