The weight of the whole city

We weren't the club
that the city deserved or wanted.

We didn't quite get there.

And that is the moment
that sees Leeds United confirmed

to another season in the Championship.

To lose out like that, and to have been
in the position we were in.

It's, you know... That feeling.

The fans maybe think
that we just forget everything

and it's all forgotten about.
But it's not.

It's... It was terrible, to be honest.

You know, to come so close
and then to be winning the game

and then lose it in the way we did,
I was just gutted.

Defeat is very hard to take.

It lasts for a while.

It's still there
and you start to ask yourself

what you should have done differently.

You can't dwell on it.

You have to use that
as your motivation now

and just go that one step further.

Everybody came together for a common goal

and whilst it ultimately ended
in disappointment,

I'd do it all again if we had to.

The biggest concern was...

"This has been amazing,
can we do it again?"

We've given the fans
some fabulous memories

and I think we've given them
their pride back.

We've given the city

the hope that they can have the club
that they all deserve.

In one short season, they've just gone
from no expectation whatsoever to,

"Boom! Leeds are on their way to be back
in the Premier League where they belong,"

Destroying teams, playing absolutely
fantastic football, to...

"You didn’t quite make it, lads.
You didn't quite make it."

But you've gotta go again.

Leeds United are embarking

on their 16th consecutive season
outside of the top flight.

After falling agonizingly short
of promotion last year,

the club must start again with the aim
of achieving a top-two spot

and a place
in next year’s Premier League.

Head coach, Marcelo Bielsa, has agreed
to stay on for one more year

to try and go one step better
than his first season in English football.

For the club, work needs to be done.

Finances must be managed,

and Bielsa must be given a squad
capable of matching his ambitions.

We had always planned
for two eventualities.

A fully-blown plan for being
in the Premier League

and also plan for it not happening.
But the most depressing element of it

was that we had been sent,
by the Football League,

40,000 tickets for Wembley

and we had to hand them over
to the managing director of Derby County,

who took them away in his car.

That was just devastation.

It was tough, but the next day,
Victor and I were in the office

saying "What are we going to do?
How are we going to fix this?"

And I think that's how we dealt
with the grief

was focusing to fix it this season.

Alright?

- How we feelin'?
- Tired.

- I only got back last night.
- Were you still on holiday yesterday?

Of course coming back...

You know coming back to Thorp Arch
and seeing the players,

It does... it did hit you a bit,
that, you know,

it did go horribly wrong
at the end of the season.

But I think that gave us extra motivation
to come back

and try and hit the ground running

and use last year
as a blessing in disguise really.

How am I still growing?

To be honest,
it didn't really settle in for me

for another couple of weeks.

Then knowing
that the manager was staying

and coming back for pre-season,
it was just forgotten about.

A couple of weeks to go,
you're working your socks off again

ready to come back in
and it’s just... you move on.

The more you dwell on it, I think,
obviously, you'll have a hangover.

I think it was more excitement
to get back in.

The boys all have come back really fit

because we didn't obviously
have the longest break.

Just focused on that wrong,
coming back and making it a right.

Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play

requires supreme levels of fitness
from the players.

And after their summer holidays,

the squad arrive back
for pre-season training.

And their fitness,
weight and body fat

are all measured
in minute detail.

What did I finish on?

Fuck's sake,
get that camera out of here lads.

Come on.

Go and stick it on a young prodigy
or something.

Certainly took an extra push

to make sure you're on your weights,
make sure you’re on your body fats,

make sure you're doing everything right.

The first year was a bit of...

Maybe a bit of fear from him
and wanting to impress him.

But second year,
it has got to come within yourself.

The boys know that if we're gonna
live up to them standards

and even go higher than those standards,

I think we need to keep pushing yourself,
keep pushing yourself.

Well, I was 66 before I left.

A bit nervous to go in there
at the minute.

Hey, get 'em on here, lads.

It’s the start of the season.

That's not too bad.

The players are not only returning
to training

they are returning
to a revamped training ground,

designed to the exact specification
of Marcelo and his staff.

Gracias, thank you.

It now resembles a health and leisure club
rather than a training ground.

But he was adamant that he wanted
the right environment for the players.

It’s an elite environment now.
It’s a Premier League club.

When we start to work again this year

it’s easy for us because we know
what we need to do.

It was that same feeling
that like, as soon as he comes out,

then the boys knew:
"It's murderball time, let's go."

We know it's hard.

The training is long days

but we know that if we do
what Marcelo wants

we have a great chance.

This is our mentality from the first day.

Preparations for the new season
are underway on the pitch.

Off the pitch, work needs to be done.

Leeds’ failure to secure promotion
last season

means that the club must now balance
the books and sell players.

Failure to satisfy league rules
around financial fair play

would mean a heavy points deduction.

The dialogue on the internet
is about Andrea

not being able to invest behind the team,

and even to the extent
that he’s stealing money

from the club to line his own pockets.

The reality is,
Andrea can’t put any more money in.

The profit and sustainability rules mean,

however much he had to put in the club,
we can't spend.

The other reality is that

Andrea is putting his hand
in his pocket month after month.

Every month for last season
I have to write him an email

and I have to request pretty much
one and a half million pounds

to keep the club running
and every month he says yes.

And that's the measure of his commitment.

We are going to talk to Marcelo

and be very clear that we have limitations
in our market transfer.

The finance of the last three years
of the club are showing big losses.

We could be possibly penalised

with a deduction of points
by the league.

So in order to not be penalised,
to not have this risk...

we have to sell some players.

How would you describe
your exit from Leeds?

When it happened,
it was a lot of emotions, of course,

because I wasn't prepared for it.

The first player to leave Elland Road
is cult figure Pontus Jansson.

So, us boys were back in training

when Pontus was still
on international duty,

so us boys never actually got to see him
after the Derby game.

Pontus came the same summer as I did
and he's all I'd known,

playing next to me and, yeah,

then one day he's there
and the next he's gone, so...

It’s not good news, no. For...
I think, for the team, for the players,

more so for players like me,
for some players like Berardi and Alioski

because we spend more time
outside the training ground.

But this is football.
We can do nothing.

Following Jansson out of the club
is young star, Jack Clarke

who is signing for Premier League side
Tottenham Hotspur.

Marcelo’s philosophy is that
no man is bigger than the team.

And the team ethos has to come first

and we have to trust Marcelo
on those decisions,

that he's got the vision
of the whole of the team at heart.

Leeds cannot expect to sell
their star players

and still challenge for promotion.

They must also bring in players
who can improve the team.

Director of Football, Victor Orta
and Marcelo Bielsa,

have identified potential
in a young player,

one who has never previously played
Championship football.

I’m alright.

I would be sitting here and lying to you

if I said to you I knew who Ben White was
because at the time,

nobody really in the Championship
had really heard of him.

Just pretend you're signing
that bit of paper for us.

Marcelo really, really rated him highly.

He’s not a household name, he's not
a name which will excite the fans.

Marcelo wants ball players at the back.

He doesn’t want big centre-halves
who are gonna thump it out every time.

He wants people who can play it out.

Ben can absolutely do that.

One of the successes of this season

is going to be players like him
stepping up and delivering.

Leeds are putting their faith
in a crop of young, hungry players

and, in keeping with that strategy,

sign French goalkeeper, Illan Meslier

and bring back Jack Harrison on loan
from Manchester City.

A player who impressed Bielsa
while at the club last season.

How are you doing?

If you look at the transfer window
this summer across the Championship,

there's not been big money spent.

It was only two years ago

that Wolves were spending 40 million
in a transfer window.

I think our signing of Helder
will probably be the biggest signing.

Getting a special player,
who is a Premier League player,

to come to Championship
is always a challenge.

But Helder has been very committed
to the Leeds cause.

He's committed himself to Leeds
for the long term.

The Leeds board are attempting
to balance the books

by selling players of significant value

and freshening up the squad
with young talent,

primarily on loan
from Premier League clubs.

But all of Leeds’ financial problems
could be solved in their entirety

with the sale of just one player:

Kalvin Phillips.

Kalvin is a player we rate really highly.

Last year he seemed to sum up the spirit
of the side.

I mean, a lot of people talk about
the money in football

and, y'know, it's life-changing.
And it is life-changing.

There was a lot of speculation about me

possibly playing for England.

There was quite a lot of talk
that I wouldn't be able

to play for England
if I was still in the Championship, so...

That was one of the things
that made me think

that I need to be in the Premier League.

It's challenging when the players
are offered the chance

to move to the Premier League
they have great financial incentive.

But they have
a fantastic footballing incentive as well

so our job is to try
and persuade the player

that their best chance of playing
in the Premier League

is going to be with Leeds United.

As the transfer activity rolls on,

Leeds head to Australia
for a pre-season tour.

Expectation, you're going to Australia
pre-season, fantastic, brilliant,

you're going to get to see Australia.
The reality... we saw the hotel

and the stadiums.

So, yeah, it’s been...
It's been intense

but we knew it was going to be
a hard, hard schedule.

Another game
before we start the season

so another chance
to get that competitive edge, fitness,

work on that winning mentality
and do the hard work.

Manchester, wank, wank, wank!

Leeds’ first game of their Australian tour

is against another English side
who have made the trip down under:

arch-rivals, Manchester United.

It's another very
important step for our club

that we are here, we are in this country,

playing a big enemy like Man United,

so we can't wait to be on the pitch
and do our best.

Even though the fixture
is officially a friendly game,

the atmosphere is intense

and 55,000 fans have packed
the Optus Stadium for the match.

A loss is never good to take,
but what an atmosphere.

I still think our fans were loud,
they were passionate,

there was so much support given
to the team, for the boys.

The result could have been better

but sometimes I think you can look
at the bigger picture.

You could understand
the actual atmosphere,

it was brilliant.

Western Sydney Wanderers

looking to rebuild some momentum
following the defeat to Manchester United.

but are based in Australia.

I couldn't believe the following
that there is here.

I'm proud to own this club
because we are really a big club.

Even here, 6,000 miles away
from Yorkshire,

so I'm very honoured, I'm very glad
to represent Leeds United.

We should all be proud and we are working
to be back where we belong.

You look,
the other night at the Optus Stadium,

it was just Leeds, Leeds everywhere.

It was like a dream come true.

To have Leeds turn up in Australia,

and to be here, it's like all my dreams
have come true.

With the tour complete,
Leeds United head back to England

to continue their preparations

for the new Championship campaign.

And to decide on the futures
of a number of key players.

One of those players is Pablo Hernandez.

Last season’s player of the year
is approaching 35 years of age

and some in the media are speculating
whether at this stage of his career,

Hernandez can still perform
to his previous high standards

throughout the gruelling
46-game Championship season.

It's hard to describe when somebody's
so good at their craft.

You can't help but be impressed
with Pablo.

As a person, he's a really
lovely family man, quite quiet.

You see what an amazing footballer he is
and he just blows you away,

and people might suggest he's old,

but there's something magical
about Pablo Hernandez.

It's difficult, you know,
when you arrive to this age, 35.

I know my age but if I feel good,

I feel that I can compete
with the other boys.

When I started to talk with the club
for a new contract,

I always say to the club,
the first option for me is Leeds United.

Hernandez is offered,
and signs, a new 2-year deal at the club.

And he is joined by Stuart Dallas
and captain, Liam Cooper,

who also commit to Leeds
for the foreseeable future

by signing new contracts.

I’ve always wanted to be here.

It's home from home, really, for me.

This is my fifth year,
going into my sixth year,

it's nice to be rewarded
with a new contract.

This year we want to give it another go

and, hopefully, we can achieve that
this season.

Some of the core of last year’s team
are staying at Leeds,

but one of the heroes
of the previous campaign

is on his way out.

Kemar Roofe is sold
to Belgian side, Anderlecht.

I'm excited to be here

and I think the project
is the most exciting thing.

To see where they want to be
and where they want to get to

and the style they want to play
to get there

is really encouraging for me.

That was a big attraction.

You've not got all these dodgy toenails

He's wanting to challenge himself
and get play time,

so he's coming from a big club

but it's about him being tested
at another big club...

that are vying for promotion

and, y'know,
proving that he is a good player.

transfer window decision

that must be made
before the start of the new season.

- It's a bit nervous.
- It is nerve-wracking.

The offers we received for him,

any other team in the Championship
I think would have accepted.

It doesn't make any financial sense at all

to have a player of that value
playing in the Championship.

The clubs chasing him
were offering him all kinds of money.

Money that wasn't affordable for a club
in the Championship

to pay that sort of thing.

I’ve had offers that would have
changed my life there and then.

Y'know, actually
I was second-guessing myself,

I was thinking, should I leave,
should I not?

I was like that...
when somebody said he might move.

I said to him, what am I going to do?

He says, "You'll have to sell that house
and come with me."

I've too much to leave behind.

If I left Leeds,
I've got 23 grandchildren,

23 great-grandchildren

and I've got a great-great grandchild
on't way,

so it wouldn't do for me to move, love.

and he was right eager to come over

and I think, for me,
Kalvin staying was just

as important as Marcelo
giving us a second year.

Leeds are now set to begin
their Championship season

with a refreshed squad

and a set of supporters trying
to keep their emotions in check

following last season’s
heart-breaking conclusion.

The way it ended was...

We... we stumbled.

I mean, we should have been promoted
last year.

It was...
It took a while to kind of sink in.

It was just so weird
because it all happened so quickly

and you couldn’t understand really
how it had happened.

It was just deeply, deeply confusing.

When you have the taste of it,

and you get the taste of being there,
and you can do it

and you throw it away
last minute like that...

It’s just a very Leeds-y thing to do...

Another record broken.

This time, I’m gonna try hold off
as much emotion as possible...

because we’ve all seen...
Anything can happen.

We've either gotta go automatic promotion
or just get knocked out of the play-offs.

I don't think my heart

If we don't go up this year,

and the difference is just incredible.

The relentless Championship season
rolls on

and Leeds travel to Stoke

in a fixture they lost last season.

Luke Ayling is injured
but one of the most versatile

and important members of the squad,
Stuart Dallas,

is filling in for Ayling at right-back.

The boys were flying,

Obviously, I wanted to them keep winning

and I'm trying to find my way
back into the team

but I actually went to York Races that day

and I had the results popping up
and I see Stuey's scored.

Obviously I was happy
but, I was like, bloody hell.

It must have been from a corner
or something

and then I get the highlights later
and I’m looking at it

and I think...
he's run from right-back

and he's the highest man upfield.

I'm thinking, "I can't do that."

I was like,
"I haven't really got a chance."

We've had loads of crap chucked at us
over the years

and we've come through it all.
We've stepped it up a level now.

will mark the 100-year centenary
of the club.

A special week of civic
and sporting events

will take place across the city.

I’m sure that the city founders,
looking back,

could not have anticipated

just how important
that club has come to be

in the hearts, the minds,

the fabric of our great city.

Members of Leeds United’s
greatest-ever team,

including Eddie Gray and Norman Hunter,

have joined the current squad
and management for this special occasion.

Generations of families have lived

through the ups and the downs

and all of the drama and the great moments
that the club has given us.

A football club
is about making people proud

to feel they are a part of it,
proud to belong.

That's what we want to do.

We want our supporters
to be proud of the club,

we want our players
to be proud of the club,

we want our legends to be proud of the
club

and we want the city
to be proud of the club.

Being a defender, a bit like Liam,

we don't really go across the halfway line
very often.

Our job was to stay back there and defend.

I used to look around that dressing room
and I used to think to myself,

"Look at the players,"

I used to think, "We can't get beat today,
we're going to win this."

And I didn't mind as a defender,

I didn’t mind working
and taking the bangs and the bumps

because I knew that the people
that were in front of me,

they had the ability to go
and score goals and win games.

And that's exactly what we done.

When I get to Elland Road now,

I always make sure I'm out
at five to three

to listen to the fans
singing "Marching on Together."

That’s where we're at now,
100 years later.

This is the closest fixture
to that Leeds United meeting

and Leeds United will walk out

to a tremendous ovation from fans
who have been following this club

so well, down the decades.

I genuinely believe this is going to be
our year, in our 100th year.

Not just to get back to the Premiership

but to get back to the upper echelons
of the Premiership,

which is where this football club,

as one of the world's great
sporting institutions, belongs.

I was as frustrated as...

maybe it is about timing.
